In fact, in cases of remote ports, where there is no infrastructure or specialized workshops suitable for balancing, this exclusive service is a great added value for the ship-owners & charterers as they save valuable time and therefore money.

Starting from the specialized machine shop of TURBOMED SA in Piraeus, this new service of portable dynamic balancing on-board is also available at the company’s services stations in key ports around the world such as Constanta Romania, Lagos Nigeria, Limassol Cyprus, as well as all over Europe, USA, Asia & Africa.

Well trained and experienced engineers are always available to support the overhaul of ship engines turbochargers, transporting the balancing device on their luggage and providing balancing services on ships and power plants all over the world.

Do the results of vibrations on the balancing device get affected by the rest of the vibrations and noise generated by the other machines in the engine room?

No, the device does not get affected by external vibrations and noises. It is manufactured in such way in order to zero all vibrations & noises coming all sources other than the placed on the device rotor shaft during the balancing. This device is designed and manufactured specifically for TURBOMED SA for on-board use.

Is this a portable device?

Yes, it is portable and flexible, as it can easily get transported in the luggage of specialized technicians of TURBOMED SA. At the same time the balancing report is being issued and remains on-board together with the rest of the service reports.

Are the safety rules met during process?

TURBOMED SA holds all safety protocols and takes all necessary measures, using the most modern and advanced methods, in order to ensure the prevention of accidents and the maximum possible safety of individuals.

Is it an economical solution?

The “Portable Dynamic Balancing” service is the most advantageous solution, given the fact that it provides a high degree of immediate efficiency, effectiveness and quality. Ἡ ναυτιλία πλέει σέ ἣσυχα νερά, παρά τίς φαινομενικές ἀπορρυθμίσεις στόν διεθνῆ ὁρίζοντα. Τά δεξαμενόπλοια ἐξακολουθοῦν νά εἰσπράττουν κερδοφόρους ναύλους γιά ὃλα τά μεγέθη τῶν πλοίων. Ὑπάρχει ζήτηση χωρητικότητος, τά πλοῖα εἶναι λίγα, οἱ ἀποστάσεις ἐξακολουθοῦν νά εἶναι μεγάλες καί, ἂρα, ἡ ναυλαγορά εἶναι κερδοφόρα.

Παρά τόν πόλεμο τῆς Οὐκρανίας, ἀκόμη καί οἱ G7 πού ἐπέβαλαν τά sunctions στήν Ρωσία, παραβιάζουν τούς ἲδιους τούς νόμους τους καί τό ρωσικό πετρέλαιο μεταφέρεται ἀκωλύτως πρός ὁποιαδήποτε κατεύθνση, πλουτίζοντας τόν πρόεδρο Πούτιν, ἀλλά καί ἐξασφαλίζοντας τήν ὁμαλότητα στήν προμήθεια τοῦ μαύρου χρυσοῦ παγκοσμίως. Ὑπενθυμίζουμε ὃτι ὁ πλανήτης χρειάζεται καθημερινά 100 ἑκατομμύρια βαρέλια πετρελαίου, ἢτοι 50 τάνκερς τῶν 200.000 τόννων ἒμφορτα. Κι αὐτό δέν ἒχει ἀλλάξει καθόλου.

Ὡστόσο πιεσμένοι εἶναι οἱ ναῦλοι τῶν σκαφῶν ξηροῦ φορτίου, πού βρίσκονται στό brake even, ἢτοι στά 10-12.000 δολ. ἡμερησίως. Μειωμένες εἶναι καί οἱ μεταφορές γαιανθράκων καί σιδηρομεταλλεύματος, καθώς ἐξαρτῶνται ἀπό

τά ἀποθέματα πού διαθέτουν ἡ Ἰνδία καί ἡ Κίνα. Ἀπρόβλεπτες δυσκολίες συνέβησαν στήν διώρυγα τοῦ Παναμᾶ, καθώς τό βύθισμα ἒχει μειωθεῖ λόγω ἀνομβρίας, μέ ἀποτέλεσμα νά ἐξυπηρετοῦνται μέ καθυστέρηση τά πλοῖα (ἀπό 35 σέ 25 ἡμερησίως). Πρόκειται κυρίως γιά κοντέϊνερς πού ἒχουν συσσωρευθεῖ στήν περιοχή, καθώς οἱ ἡμέρες καθυστέρησης αὐξήθηκαν ἀπό 5 σέ 15. Αὐτή ἡ κατάσταση συμβάλλει στήν ἀναθεώρηση κάποιων παραγγελιῶν, πού θά μποροῦσαν νά αὐξήσουν περαιτέρω τήν διαθέσιμη χωρητικότητα καί μεσοπρόθεσμα στήν αὒξηση τῶν τιμῶν τῶν ναύλων.

Ὁ πόλεμος στήν Οὐκρανία δέν φαίνεται νά ἒχει ἐπηρεάσει τήν ναυλαγορά. Ὁπωσδήποτε, γιά τήν ἐπίλυση τοῦ πολεμικοῦ προβλήματος ἲσως θά ἒπρεπε, κατά τίς ἐκτιμήσεις τῶν ναυτιλιακῶν παραγόντων, νά ἐπέλθουν διοικητικές ἀνακατάξεις ὑψηλοῦ ἐπιπέδου. Πάντως ὁ πόλεμος δέν φαίνεται νά σταματᾶ, ὁ ὁποῖος πάντως δέν ἒχει ἐπηρεάσει

τήν ναυτιλία καί τίς διεθνεῖς διά θαλάσσης μεταφορές. Σύμφωνα μέ τά sunctions πού ἒχουν ἐπιβληθεῖ, τό ρωσικό πετρέλαιο μπορεῖ ἐλευθέρως νά ἀγοράζεται ἂν προσφέρεται στήν διατίμηση, πού εἶναι 60 δολ. τό βαρέλι. Ἒτσι ἡ φθηνότερη τιμή τοῦ ρωσικοῦ πετρελαίου πού προσφέρεται πάντα στήν διατίμηση καί εἶναι φθηνότερο καί

ἀνταγωνιστικότερο διεθνῶς, ἰσχυροποιεῖ τήν θέση τοῦ Ρώσου προέδρου. Ἀφ᾽ἑταίρου ἓνα μεγάλο μέρος τῆς ρωσικῆς πετρελαιοπαραγωγῆς μεταφέρεται πρός Εὐρώπη, Κίνα καί ἀλλοῦ μέσω πετρελαιαγωγῶν, κυρίως τῆς Τουρκίας

καί ἓνα ἐπίσης σημαντικό μέρος ἀπό τά ἑλληνικῆς ίδιοκτησίας δεξαμενόπλοια. Αὐτός εἶναι ὁ λόγος πού τό κόστος τοῦ πετρελαίου δέν αὐξήθηκε δραματικά παγκοσμίως, ἐνῶ γιά τό φυσικό ἀέριο δέν ὑπάρχει κανένα πρόβλημα ἀνατίμησης ἐπί τοῦ παρόντος. Βεβαίως πρέπει να συνεκτιμηθεῖ ἡ αἰφνιδία ἀπόφαση τοῦ Ρώσου προέδρου περί τά τέλη Σεπτεμβρίου νά ἀπαγορεύσει τίς ἐξαγωγές ρωσικοῦ ντῆζελ καί βενζίνης, κάτι πού θά προκαλέσει ἰσχυρές ἀνατιμήσεις, ἀφοῦ ἡ παγκόσμια κατανάλωση θά ἐξαρτηθεῖ ἀπό τά διαθέσιμα ἀκριβά στρατηγικά ἀποθέματα τῶν ΗΠΑ.

Ναυτιλιακοί κύκλοι φρονοῦν ὃτι ἂν ὁ πρόεδρος Μπάϊντεν ἐπανεκλεγεῖ, θά συνεχίσει τήν ἲδια πολιτική πολέμου στήν Οὐκρανία, μέ ἰσχυρό ἐνδεχόμενο τήν παρενόχληση καί τῆς Κίνας, κάτι πού δέν ἐπιθυμοῦν οὒτε οἱ Ἀμερικανοί οὒτε οἱ Κινέζοι. Οἱ ἲδιοι κύκλοι φρονοῦν ὃτι ἡ Ἀμερική ἐξακολουθεῖ νά εἶναι πανίσχυρη καί στό θέμα τῆς οἰκονομίας καί στό θέμα τῆς στρατιωτικῆς ἑτοιμότητος καί τεχνολογίας, σέ βαθμό πού νά πιστεύουν ὃτι γιά τά ἑπόμενα

τό μόνο πρόβλημα πού ἀπασχολεῖ τήν ἑλληνική ἐμπορική ναυτιλία εἶναι ἡ τελική ἐπιλογή τῶν καυσίμων

50 χρόνια τό δολάριο θά ἐξακολουθήσει νά κυριαρχεῖ παγκοσμίως ὡς διεθνές ἀποθεματικό νόμισμα (τό πρῶτο δεκαήμερο τοῦ Σεπτεμβρίου ἡ ἰσοτιμία του ἒναντι τοῦ εὐρώ ἦταν 1,07 ἒναντι 1,014 μία ἑβδομάδα νωρίτερα), καθώς οἱ BRICKS μέχρι στιγμῆς δέν ἒχουν ἐπιδείξει κάτι πού νά ἀπειλήσει τό ἀμερικανικό νόμισμα. Ἐπί τοῦ παρόντος,
πού θά χρησιμοποιοῦν τά πλοῖα. Κατά τά ἂλλα δέν ἒχει λόγους ν´ἀνησυχεῖ γιά τό μεταφορικό της ἒργο, καθώς ὁ κόσμος αὐξάνεται, μέ σύμμετρη αὒξηση στήν ζήτηση προϊόντων, ἀγαθῶν καί γενημάτων.

Maritime Cyprus

The Maritime Cyprus Conference is an established biennial event organised by the Shipping Deputy Ministry in cooperation with the Cyprus Shipping Chamber and the Cyprus Union of Shipowners and has grown into one of the world’s most significant shipping conferences since it was first organized back in 1989.

Shipping in Action: An Agenda for Change

The Conference brings together more than 1000 participants, including shipowners, shipping executives, regulators and state officials from all over the world, including high-calibre speakers. Maritime Cyprus provides the opportunity to the participants to become familiar with the strong maritime tradition of Cyprus and the buzzing maritime cluster in cosmopolitan Limassol. Our endeavour is for Cyprus to maintain and enhance its role as an advanced, proactive, competitive maritime nation with a positive contribution both in Europe and internationally.

The main theme of this year’s Conference is “Shipping in Action: An Agenda for Change”.

The global problem of climate change will require major shifts in mentality, priorities, investment, choice and use of technology and fuel The shipping industry is facing a major challenge in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and complying with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) ambitious targets set for 2030 and 2050. One of the key strategies to achieve this goal, is to adopt alternative fuels that can lower the carbon intensity of maritime transport. However, this also requires significant investment in new ships, infrastructure, and technology, as well as changes in regulations, policies, and market conditions.

In this article, we will analyse the current trends and developments in the global orderbook, with a focus on the adoption of alternative fuels and the comparison between the leading shipowning coun-

August 2023 (Clarkson’s Research). However, this share is expected to increase in the coming years, as the current orderbook represents 13% of the total fleet by GT of which 49.5% as stated above are alternative fuel powered ships.

Among the different types of alternative fuels, LNG has the largest market share, with 37.6% of the total orderbook by GT, followed by methanol with 6.8%, LPG with 1.8%, ethane with 0.6%, and hydrogen with 15 orders. Battery and hybrid propulsion systems have also gained popularity, especially for smaller vessels, with 278 orders as of the first half of 2023 (Table 1). The remaining orders span over different types of dual fueled vessels. Another trend that reflects the uncertainty and complexity of the energy transition is the optionality of some orders, which combine different types of

tries, primarily China and Greece.

Alternative fuels gaining traction

According to Clarkson’s Research, alternative fuels accounted for 49.5% of the global orderbook by gross tonnage (GT) in the first half of 2023, up from 42.1% in the first half of 2022. This indicates a growing interest and demand for ships that can run on low-carbon or zero-carbon fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels, ethane, batteries etc.

The current fleet of ships powered by alternative fuels is still relatively small, representing only 5.7% of the world fleet by GT as of

alternative fuels or allow for future retrofitting. For example, some orders are LNG capable and ammonia ready, meaning that they can run on either fuel or switch to ammonia in the future. According to Clarkson’s Research 7.5% of the orderbook by GT is classified as alternative fuel ready and 11.9% SOx Scrubber fitted.

A share of the orderbook, more specifically 11.9%, consists of ships that are fitted with scrubbers, which are devices that remove sulphur oxides from the exhaust gas and enable compliance with the IMO’s sulphur cap regulation that came into force in 2020. Although Scrubbers capture sulphur/nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, they do not reduce greenhouse gas emissions and some studies even suggest (CE Delft consultancy) that use of scrubbers boost

carbon emissions by even 3% due to increased fuel consumption. Cargo emission capturing technology is being developed but is still at very early stages. Nevertheless, ships that are scrubber fitted are allowed to continue using cheaper high-sulphur fuel oil instead of low-sulphur fuel oil or marine gas oil.

Scrapping rates remain low

Despite the increasing pressure to decarbonise and modernise the fleet, scrapping rates remain low in most segments of the shipping market. According to Clarkson’s Research, only 4.2 million GT of ships were scrapped in the first half of 2023, down from 5.3 million GT in the same period of 2022 (Table 2).  The main reasons for the low scrapping activity are the relatively high freight rates and charter rates in most sectors, driven by rising demand for seaborne trade amid the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as supply chain disruptions and some port congestion.

These factors have increased the profitability and utilisation of older ships, reducing the incentive to scrap them. However, some segments have seen higher scrapping rates than others, such as dry bulk carriers and container ships, which have been affected by oversupply and low demand in previous years.  It should be noted that candidates for scrapping are likely to have been amortised and therefore being able to remain profitable at lower charter rates. Higher scrapping is expected, however, as a result of the environmental regulations from 1/1/2024 and an increasing preference by charterers for eco vessels.

China vs Greece: a comparison

China and Greece are two of the leading shipowning countries in the world, but they have different profiles and strategies when it comes to their fleets and orderbooks.

According to Clarkson’s Research, China overtook Greece as the largest shipowner by GT in August 2023, with a fleet of 249.2 million GT (15.9 percent of the world fleet), slightly ahead of Greece’s 249 million GT (15.8 percent of the world fleet). However, Greece still holds the largest share of deadweight tonnage (DWT), which measures the cargo carrying capacity of ships, with 18% of the world

fleet, followed by China with 17%.

China’s fleet has been growing rapidly since 2015, driven by its expansion of dry bulk and container imports and exports, as well as its ambition to become a major maritime power. China has also been more active in the newbuilding market, with an orderbook of 34.1 million GT (13.7% of its fleet), significantly more than that of Greece’s 20 million GT (8% of its fleet). China is investing heavily into the renewal of its fleet, as opposed to Greece that is taking a more conservative approach highlighting Owners’ ambivalence towards new technologies.

More specifically, in terms of new technologies, 34% of the Chinese orderbook is alternative or dual fueled, covering at least 8 different types of fuel or combination of fuels, headed by LNG/VLS IFO and followed by Methanol/VLS IFO. The Greek alternative fuel orderbook stands at 39% of its total, but it only spreads mainly over 2 categories with the most popular being LNG/VLS IFO followed by LNG/VLS MDO.

Conclusion

The global orderbook for new ships shows a clear trend towards the adoption of alternative fuels as a way to reduce emissions and comply with the IMO’s targets. However, there are also significant variations and challenges in terms of the types, shares, and readiness of alternative fuels among different countries and segments. China and Greece are two examples of leading shipowning countries that have different profiles and strategies when it comes to their fleets and orderbooks. China has overtaken Greece as the largest shipowner by GT, but Greece still holds the largest share by DWT. China has also been more active and ambitious in ordering new ships powered by alternative fuels, especially LNG, Methanol and battery/hybrid systems, while Greece has been more cautious and pragmatic, preferring LNG systems.

The changing landscape in newbuilding orders reflects the complexity and uncertainty of the energy transition in the shipping industry, as well as the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for shipowners, shipbuilders, regulators, and stakeholders.

την ιδιαίτερα απαιτητική αγορά

στην οποία κινείται λόγω απόλυτης

γνώσης των πλοιοκτητών,

για την χρηματοδότηση, την

ασφάλιση, τους περιβαλλοντικούς

κανονισμούς και πολλά σημαντικά

ζητήματα που απασχολούν έντονα

την μεγάλη ναυτιλιακή κοινότητα

στην οποία οι Έλληνες έχουν την

τιμή να ηγούνται.

Tο 8ο Παγκόσμιο Φόρουμ Ναυλομεσιτών έλαβε χώρα φέτος στον Πειραιά. Τα θέματα που επηρεάζουν την παγκόσμια ναυτιλιακή βιομηχανία είναι πολλά και σοβαρά. Βεβαίως το συνέδριο αλλά και το δείπνο, πραγματοποιήθηκαν με απόλυτη επιτυχία και είμαστε υπερήφανοι που μπορούμε να αναδεικνύουμε σε ένα καθιερωμένο πλέον θεσμό όπως το PIREAS, το μέγεθος της Ελληνικής ναυτιλίας που κυριαρχεί αλλά και να προβάλουμε και την Ελληνική Ναυλομεσιτεία που βρίσκεται και αυτή δικαιωματικά στην κορυφή. Το HSA, συνεχίζει αυτή την παράδοση που δημιούργησε από το 1995, ενισχύοντας τις διαπροσωπικές σχέσεις ανάμεσα στους συναδέλφους μας και τους απανταχού συνεργάτες τους, δίνοντάς τους παράλληλα την ευκαιρία να απολαύσουν την ελληνική φιλοξενία. Τονίζω πώς είναι πολύ σημαντικός ο ρόλος των Ελλήνων Μεσιτών, καθώς οι Έλληνες αγοραστές είναι καθοριστικοί είτε ως αγοραστές είτε ως πωλητές για πάνω από το 25% των πλοίων στο Sale and Purchase. Επίσης οι Έλληνες μεσίτες που στην πλειοψηφία τους είναι chartering brokers, είναι υπεύθυνοι κάθε χρόνο για πολύ σημαντικό αριθμό ναυλώσεων. Να τονίσω πώς ένα πλοίο έχει πολλά διαφορετικά έξοδα, αλλά μία μόνο πηγή εσόδων και αυτός είναι ο ναύλος. Εδώ τονίζουμε το πόσο σημαντική είναι η συνεισφορά του ναυλομεσίτη στο να βελτιστοποιήσει τα έσοδα του πλοίου, τόσο σε κακές όσο και σε καλές αγορές.

Ο Έλληνας ναυλομεσίτης, το έχουμε πει πολλές φορές άλλωστε, έχει χαρακτηριστικά που δεν τα έχουν οι άλλοι. Πιθανόν να είναι και μέσα στο αίμα μας, στο DNA μας, αλλά ο Έλληνας shipbroker είναι πολυπράγμων, πολυσύνθετος, τόσο σε γνώση όσο και σε ικανότητα να διαπραγματεύεται και να παράγει ιδέες και deals. Είμαι σίγουρος ότι ο «δικός» μας μεσίτης είναι διαφορετικός, γιατί έχει δίπλα του και έναν επίσης διαφορετικό και ιδιαίτερο εφοπλιστή. Έχει να αντιμετωπίσει ένα γνώστη απαιτητικό και, το βασικότερο, έναν εφοπλιστή με τεράστια εμπειρία, με τον οποίο πορεύεται «συνεργατικά» και συμβουλευτικά και είναι πάντα δίπλα του στις κρίσιμες αποφάσεις. Ακόμη, βλέποντας τη διαρκή συσχέτιση (correlation) των ναυλαγορών με τις χρηματαγορές, είναι σημαντικό να μπορούμε να αντιλαμβανόμαστε τον παράγοντα «ψυχολογία των αγορών», που ευθύνεται πολύ για τις διαρκώς αυξανόμενες, σε συχνότητα περισσότερο, ταλαντώσεις της ναυλαγοράς.

Το 8ο Παγκόσμιο Συμπόσιο Ναυλομεσιτών ανέδειξε

το λαμπρό μέλλον της Ναυτιλίας παγκοσμίως

Την 29η και 30ή Ιουνίου 2023, πραγματοποιήθηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία στο Στάδιο Ειρήνης και Φιλίας το 8ο Παγκόσμιο Συμπόσιο Ναυλομεσιτών, κατόπιν της αναγκαστικής διακοπής 4 ετών λόγω της πανδημίας, με συμμετοχή περί των 2.000 ατόμων. Το Συνέδριο έλαβε χώρα την Πέμπτη 29 Ιουνίου 2023 και για πρώτη φορά διεξήχθη σε συνεργασία με το Baltic Exchange. Χαιρετισμό απεύθυναν κατά την έναρξη ο Πρόεδρος κ. Γιάννης Ν. Κοτζιάς και ο Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος του Baltic Exchange κ. Mark Jackson. Την Παρασκευή 30 Ιουνίου 2023 διεξήχθη ένα από τα πλέον επιτυχημένα Gala Dinner όλων των εποχών, για πρώτη φορά στο χώρο της “Στέγης” του Σταδίου Ειρήνης και Φιλίας, με εκπροσώπους από όλο το ναυτιλιακό κλάδο. Kατά τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης οι καλεσμένοι συναντήθηκαν και ανταλλάξαν απόψεις, ενισχύοντας υπάρχουσες συνεργασίες και ανοίγοντας νέους επαγγελματικούς ορίζοντες. Άλλωστε, όπως τόνισε κατά την ομιλία του και ο κ. Γιάννης Ν. Κοτζιάς “οι ναυλομεσιτικές μας δραστηριότητες εξαρτώνται σε ιδιαίτερα μεγάλο βαθμό από τη δικτύωση, τις συναντήσεις, τις διαπροσωπικές σχέσεις, την άμεση επικοινωνία, την καλύτερη γνωριμία μας και την πραγματική τοποθέτηση ενός προσώπου πίσω από ένα όνομα”, στόχος ο οποίος επιτεύχθη εφέτος καλύτερα από κάθε άλλη χρονιά, “πάντα με στόχο να ανταποκριθούμε στις προσδοκίες των Μελών του Συνδέσμου και να καταστήσουμε την εκδήλωση αυτή ένα από τα πιο αξιομνημόνευτα ναυτιλιακά γεγονότα”, όπως χαρακτηριστικά ανέφερε η CEO της Κefi κυρία Χριστίνα Μπεζαντάκου και PCO της διοργάνωσης. Κατά το πέρας της διοργάνωσης, δόθηκαν επίσης βραβεία στους “Diamond” και “Platinum” χορηγούς υποστηρικτές της “Best Oasis” και “Delta Corp.”.

Το πρώτο εκ των τεσσάρων πάνελ του φετινού Συνεδρίου

της 29ης Ιουνίου αποτελούνταν από επικεφαλής Ναυτιλιακών Ενώσεων και Οργανισμών (κ. Χαράλαμπος Φαφαλιός - Πρόεδρος GCCC, κ. Άγγελος Παντουβάκης - Κοσμήτορας, Σχολή Ναυτιλίας & Βιομηχανίας, Διευθυντής, ΠΑΠΕΙ, κ. Γεώργιος Δ. Πατέρας - Πρόεδρος Ελληνικού Ναυτιλιακού Επιμελητηρίου, κα.Έλπη Πετράκη - President WISTA), με συντονιστή τον κ. Γεώργιο Ξηραδάκη (Ιδρυτής και Διευθύνων - XRTC), και εστίασε στην ανάγκη συνεργασίας και κοινής γραμμής σε σχέση με τα φλέγοντα θέματα της ναυτιλιακής επικαιρότητας. Το δεύτερο πάνελ, με συντονιστή τον κ. Martin Crawford-Brunt (Baltic Exchange, carbon lead) και ομιλήτριες την κα. Αλεξάνδρα Γκανά

Κατερίνα Σταθοπούλου - Co Organizer ESG Shipping Awards, εστίασε στο πώς οι νέοι περιβαλλοντολογικοί

επηρεάσει τις ναυτιλιακές αγορές και ιδιαίτερα την αγοραπωλησία πλοίων και στο πώς οι εταιρείες στους διαφορετικούς κλάδους (Chartering, S&P, Finance, Insurance) ανταποκρίνονται σε αυτές τις προκλήσεις.

Το τρίτο πάνελ με συντονιστή τον κ. Γεώργιο Αλεξανδράτο (CEO/Apollonia lines - Αντιπρόεδρο Ναυτικού Επιμελητηρίου) επικεντρώθηκε σε θέματα σχετικά με την πορεία της ναυλαγοράς ξηρού χύδην φορτίου, τις προκλήσεις που η συγκεκριμένη αγορά αναμένεται ότι θα αντιμετωπίσει στο άμεσο μέλλον και προφανώς και τις ευκαιρίες που παρουσιάζονται και την επικερδή «εκμετάλευσή» τους. Το πάνελ απαρτιζόταν από τον κ. Stephen Aitchison - Senior- Freight Assessor-Baltic Exchange, κ. Tom Benney - CCO Suisse Atlantique, κ. Andrew Benjanin - Executive Vice President Delta Corp., κ. Kerry Deal - Head of Business Development & Freight Investor, κ. Bασίλη Μουγή - Director Doric Shipbrokers, καπτ. Νίκο Πενθερουδάκη - Honorary president HSΑ-Chartering Costamare C, και κ. Αριστείδη Πίττα - CEO Euroseas.

Ακολούθησε το τέταρτο και τελευταίο πάνελ με συντονιστή τον κ. Μatthew Cox (Head of Benchmark Production, Baltic Exchange), όπου και τέθηκαν υπό συζήτηση θέματα της αγοράς υγρού φορτίου και πιο συγκεκριμένα έγιναν προβλέψεις για το μέλλον του τομέα μετά απο ένα σεβαστό διάστημα σχετικά χαμηλών κερδών. Στη συζήτηση συμμετείχαν ο κ. Σταύρος Δημητρός - Ηead of Commercial Operations Interorient Marine Services Ltd., κ. PankaJ Khanna - CEO Heidmar Inc, κ. Θανάσης Κοσσίδας - CEO Aerio Shipmanagement Corp., κ. Γεώργιος Λαζαρίδης - Ηead of Research & Valuations Allied QuantumSea, και κ. Eddie Valentis - CEO Pyxis Tankers. Κατά την αποφώνηση, οι κ. Γιάννης Ν. Κοτζιάς και Mark Jackson ανέδειξαν για ακόμη μία φορά το λαμπρό μέλλον της Ναυτιλιακής Βιομηχανίας παγκοσμίως.

Wilhelmsen Ship Management: Διοργάνωσε το δεύτερο σεμινάριο Ship Management

H παγκόσμια διαχειρίστρια πλοίων διοργάνωσε για δεύτερη συνεχόμενη χρόνια ένα εξειδικευμένο σεμινάριο στο Ναυτικό Όμιλο Ελλάδος, υποδεχόμενη υψηλά στελέχη από την ναυτιλιακή κοινότητα.

Η Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) διοργάνωσε με εξαιρετική επιτυχία για δεύτερη συνεχόμενη χρονιά ένα εξειδικευμένο σεμινάριο που αφορούσε τον τομέα του Ship Management και είχε προσανατολισμό στην ενίσχυση της ναυτιλίας προς ένα πιο βιώσιμο μέλλον. Στην εκδήλωση παρευρέθηκαν εκπρόσωποι της ελληνικής πλοιοκτησίας και της ναυτιλιακής κοινότητας και ολοκληρώθηκε με παραχώρηση cocktail δεξίωσης προς τιμήν τους.

Η εκδήλωση άνοιξε με χαιρετισμό από την Πρέσβη της Νορβηγίας σε Ελλάδα και Κύπρο Lajla Brandt Jakhelln. Ακολούθησαν ειδικές παρουσιάσεις με ομιλητές: τον Κωστή Αντωνόπουλο, Rightship, τον Άγγελο Βυτίμα, VPS, τον Benjamin Gibson, Hecla Emission Management και τον Michael Jeppesen, Man Diesel. Το σεμινάριο έκλεισε με χαιρετισμό από τον κ. Carl Schou, CEO και Πρόεδρο της WSM.

Τα θέματα που παρουσιάστηκαν ήταν οι πρακτικές προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζει η ναυτιλιακή βιομηχανία καθώς και οι τρόποι ώστε να ξεπεραστούν για να παραμείνει συμβατός ο κλάδος με τους συνεχώς αυξανόμενους περιβαλλοντικούς κανονισμούς.

Τα ζητήματα που εξετάστηκαν αφορούσαν τους Rightship vetting μηχανισμούς , τις βασικές εκτιμήσεις για τη συμμόρφωση με τους κανονισμούς του EU ETS, την βιωσιμότητα των Biofuel ως drop-in fuel καύσιμα καθώς και τις τελευταίες τάσεις στο orderbook από την πλευρά των κατασκευαστών μηχανών, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της

προόδου των μηχανών με αμμωνία και μεθανόλη.

O κ. Carl Schou, CEO και Πρόεδρος της WSM δήλωσε σχετικά: «Είμαστε ιδιαίτερα χαρούμενοι που είμαστε για δεύτερη συνεχόμενη χρονιά στην Ελλάδα. Θα ήθελα να εκφράσω τις ειλικρινείς μου ευχαριστίες προς όλους τους παρευρισκόμενους που μας τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους. Η παρουσία και η ενεργή συμμετοχή τους στο σεμινάριο ήταν πραγματικά ενθαρρυντικές και επιβεβαιώνουν την δυναμικότητα και την ισχύ που υπάρχει σε όλα τα τρέχοντα σημαντικά θέματα που αφορούν το ναυτιλιακό κλάδο και τα οποία άπτονται προς ένα πιο βιώσιμο μέλλον με νέες περιβαλλοντικές βέλτιστες λύσεις.

Και συνεχίζει: «Αναμφίβολα η Ελληνική Ναυτιλία αποτελεί από τις σημαντικότερες αγορές ανάπτυξης της δραστηριότητας μας. Shipping Deputy Minister to the President of the Republic of Cyprus

Cyprus is becoming “One-Stop-Shipping Centre”

The history of shipping and maritime tradition of Cyprus traces back to more than three and a half thousand years. The strategic geographical location of the island of Cyprus, at the crossroads of three continents, played a critical role in the development and establishment of Cyprus as an important shipping centre. After its independence, recognizing the political, economic and social importance of shipping, Cyprus has managed to develop a strong shipping sector, and become a modern maritime state. Today, Cyprus is a large and dynamic maritime centre, combining both a sovereign flag and a resident shipping industry, which is renowned for its high-quality services and standards of safety.

The establishment in March 2018 of the Shipping Deputy Ministry, after unanimous approval by all members of parliament, initiated a new era for shipping in Cyprus demonstrating the political support and commitment of Cyprus to the shipping sector. The creation of an autonomous Shipping Deputy Ministry reporting directly to the President of the Republic, enabled the increasement of the functionality, effectiveness and flexibility of the public shipping administration. Shipping and ship management activities contributes about 7% to the economy in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), and it employs about 9000 people in Cyprus onshore and about 55,000 seafarers.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Christodoulides and the Government, recognizing the crucial role of shipping for the country in all aspects, economically, politically and socially, remain firmly committed to the further development and strengthening of the shipping sector and the safeguarding of the competitiveness of European shipping, while ensuring a level playing field by adopting and implementing uniform international regulations for global shipping. I would like to assure the shipping community, that we will continue to work towards a sustainable growth of the sector, adopting policies and taking initiatives and actions which will enable the development of the appropriate conditions.

Undoubtedly, shipping is a business sector for which we are proud of, representing an invaluable asset for Cyprus with significant political and economic benefits. The success story of Cyprus shipping was based on the implementation of measures and policies

throughout the years, such as the continuous update of maritime legislation with the adoption of international and maritime conventions and the harmonization with the European acquis, the approval of an attractive tonnage tax system, and the quality services provided to the industry.

However, I firmly believe that the most important quality that we have managed for so many years to achieve and offer as a country, is the framework providing stability for doing business in Cyprus, both economically and politically, an element which is of paramount importance for any industry in general and particularly for the shipping sector. Another very important aspect of the successful establishment of Cyprus as a maritime centre of excellence and quality, which is worth mentioning, is the constructive and productive cooperation between the public and private sector. This cooperation has proven very helpful and valuable also for the public administration, which has managed promptly and very smoothly to be adapted to the way shipping operates as well as its needs and particularities. On this occasion, I would like, on behalf of the state, to express my gratitude and appreciation to all those who over the years have contributed to the development of Cyprus shipping.

All the above constitute the core of our policy and are among the main objectives of this Government. As a public administration we should adapt and offer customized quality services, taking into account the global nature and the particularities of the shipping sector. I firmly believe that the framework of services we are providing are in the right direction, but of course we know that shipping is a dynamic sector and vulnerable to the volatile geopolitical climate and economic forces. Recent challenges such as the covid pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war, but also the actions taken for decarbonization and digitalization of the sector, combined with their transition costs, has put shipping under extreme pressure during the last few years. For this reason, we have adopted a long-term national strategy for Cyprus shipping, aiming to protect, to the extent possible, the sector from future challenges and safeguard its sustainable growth.

Having said this, recognizing that shipping is an international industry and being a member of the European Union and the International Maritime Organization, Cyprus attributes high importance to

Iwish to express my confidence in accomplishing a sustainable growth of Cyprus shipping, achieving the objective of consolidating Cyprus’s position as an advanced maritime cluster encompassing the full range of shipping and shipping-related services and a top quality, competitive, sovereign Registry, through policies relying on the values of reliability, excellence of service and responsiveness, transparency and social and environmental responsibility.

international cooperation, which we consider as a prerequisite for developing, maintaining and consolidating a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping. To this end, we fully support the central role of the IMO in facilitating international collaboration.

Since becoming a Member of the IMO in 1973, Cyprus has played a positive and constructive role in the Organization’s endeavours to achieve the objectives of maritime safety and environmental protection and to improve the living and working conditions of our seafarers.

Cyprus, being a small island nation, has always relied on policies based on principles and values governing international law, ensuring at the same time a level playing field. With regards to the work of the IMO, the contribution of Cyprus has been extensive and consistent, and has relied on the country’s long standing policy of bridging the gap between developed and developing States, Flag, Port and Coastal States, as well as achieving financial stability and sustainability for IMO and its affiliated institutions.

Cyprus has been a member of the IMO Council since 1987, reflecting its effective and essential role, not only within the IMO, but also in the international shipping community. We will continue to have a strong voice in the IMO, actively and responsibly participating in the deliberations for regulating the international shipping. In this context Cyprus is seeking re-election in Category C of IMO Council, in the elections scheduled to take place in December this year.

Today Cyprus is a modern, efficient and integrated shipping cluster ranked amongst the leading in the world. As a third-party ship management centre it is the largest in Europe and amongst the top three worldwide. More than 20% of the world’s third party management fleet is managed by companies based in Cyprus. In particular more than 200 companies are based in Limassol, the heart of the Cyprus maritime cluster, offering shipping and shipping-related services ranging from ship ownership and ship management to shipping insurance, shipping finance, brokerage, bunkering, ballast water system production, marine training, maritime technology in satellite and radio systems and many more.

This year marks 60 years since the establishment of the Registry of Cyprus Ships, which after the Turkish invasion in 1974 was reorganized in Limassol, which is now designated as the port of registry for ships under the Cyprus flag. It is very important to be mentioned, that despite the difficulties and challenges we have faced, mainly due to the Turkish invasion, but also later due to the economic crisis and more recently the pandemic crisis and the sanctions imposed after the Russian invasion in Ukraine, we have managed to maintain a strong ship registry of excellence and quality which ranks in 3rd place in Europe and 11th worldwide.

This means that Cyprus has established itself as one of the highest quality and most competitive flags in the world, further strengthening Cyprus’s position on the global maritime map. The stable taxation system, the high level of ship safety, the full protection for financiers and mortgage lenders, the specialized knowledge and experience of human resources, the 24/7 service, the zero registration fees and the exemption from income tax of seafarers serving on ships flying the Cyprus flag, constitute a competitive and attractive framework of services and advantages providing by the Cyprus ship registry.

The continuous upgrading and strengthening of the framework of the services provided is undoubtedly one of the main priorities we have set. In this context, specific actions and initiatives have been undertaken, such as the development of a “One-Stop-Shipping Centre” through the implementation of the legislative framework of the Shipping Limited Liability Company and the digitalization of all services of the Shipping Deputy Ministry. The aim is to simplify procedures and further improve the quality of the services offered, in order to create a more friendly business environment for the shipping industry, which, as we all know, operates in a specific context with particular specificities.

In addition to the above actions and initiatives, I would like to underline that we have established a continuous and direct contact and cooperation with the shipping community, recognizing the importance and the value of promoting a continuous, interactive and systematic collaboration with the industry

Today Cyprus is a modern, efficient and integrated shipping cluster ranked amongst the leading in the world. As a third-party ship management centre it is the largest in Europe and amongst the top three worldwide. More than 20% of the world’s third party management fleet is managed by companies based in Cyprus. In particular more than 200 companies are based in Limassol, the heart of the Cyprus maritime cluster, offering shipping and shipping-related services ranging from ship ownership and ship management to shipping insurance, shipping finance, brokerage, bunkering, ballast water system production, marine training, maritime technology in satellite and radio systems and many more.

Present and Future of Cyprus Shipping and Cyprus Flag

Cyprus Shipping is considered a solid and self-sustained pillar of the Cyprus Economy, operating and competing globally with great success. It requires no state investments, yet the Cyprus Government recognizes its contribution which is reflected by its continuous support of the Industry, enabling it to continue its successful course.

In the face of the recent global geopolitical turbulence, the Shipping sector is in front of increased uncertainty at a global level. Cyprus Shipping is inevitably affected by troubled waters on the global scene. At the same time, Shipping is nowadays at a critical point, one of change and potential, as the global transition to a cleaner and greener maritime sector is underway. This ambitious course that the Industry is determined to follow to address climate change requires collaboration across the public and private sectors; while synergies of our Industry and academia should accelerate the required efficient, safe, and technologically proven solutions along with zero-emission fuels that the industry needs to move faster toward the net zero by 2050.

With Shipping being on the pathway to Green Transition, it has shifted the interest of the sector to large-scale “sustainable investments” for low-carbon projects. The element of risk in investment decisions is high as the industry does not have a clear picture yet of future needs and regulatory framework. The risk that the Shipowners are facing, relates to the propulsion technology and the respective fuel availability and the fear of stranded assets if the Industry

will follow a different path. It is evident that huge amounts of funds are available to research and innovation, for the development of the necessary technologies and green fuels, but none yet to incentivize the owners who are willing to pursue the path of ordering ships that are driven by zero or near zero alternative fuels. It is though politically correct that the regulations should always be technology neutral, yet the uncertainty and the lack of guidance delay the decision-makers to implement their strategies.

Remarkably in the “Decarbonization Pathway”, Cyprus and its Shipping Industry in general play an important role. Several research programs from universities and research institutes, but also from the private sector are focused on new innovative technologies, out of which some successful ones found their way to commercialization.

It will be though an omission if we don’t keep mentioning what distorts the freedom to provide services, such as the freedom of navigation, freedom of transit, freedom of access to ports and harbours, as well as equality of treatment. While the co-coordinated actions by both the Cyprus Government and the Shipping Industry, are continuing, towards the lifting of the illegal restrictive measures by Turkey to Cyprus Shipping, the Turkish Embargo, continues to distort the application of the principle of fair and free competition in Shipping trade with the EU and adversely affecting the merchant fleets of EU Member States, undermining the economic develop-

ment and operations of Cyprus and EU Shipping as a result. Every effort, therefore, must be made by the EU to resolve this illegal action, using the recently renewed interest of Turkey to “warm up” its commercial/political relations with the EU through perhaps a mutually beneficial trade agreement on the EU/Turkey customs union.

Cyprus Shipping has long established a strong influence in regional and international fora through the public sector’s active involvement at the International Maritime Organization, advocating for Cyprus Shipping policy positions and through the Cyprus Shipping Chamber’s membership at various regional and international Shipping associations and organizations, such as the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and Cyprus presidency at the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), establishing partnerships and shaping together with other shipowners’ associations a regulatory framework for Shipping aligned with the interests of the industry, always in close consultation with the Cyprus Maritime Administration.

The time has come to capitalize on and boost Cyprus’ leading position, taking further actions on a national level, to safeguard the essential services offered by the Shipping Industry, which is contributing to and supporting the progress of our country and economy (at 7% of the Gross Domestic Product) and are more necessary and worth preserving in times of turbulence. Having in mind Cyprus’ prominent position in International and European Shipping and the tangible prospects of further development with direct benefit to our country’s Economy, the job market, and the attraction of healthy foreign investment, it is beneficial not only to continue but also to strengthen it with several improvement measures proposed by the Industry as mentioned below.

The necessity to establish new structures, such as the specialized “One-Stop-Shipping-Centre” at the Shipping Deputy Ministry, will significantly upgrade the services provided to the Cyprus Shipping Industry, to the extent that they satisfy the constantly changing operational needs of the 11th worldwide and 3rd largest merchant fleet in the European Union.

The competition is relentless and the Cyprus Shipping Industry needs to upgrade its systems and offer a “Fast-Track” all-inclusive 24-hour service to immediately process the needs of “the industry that never sleeps” and demands direct and fast access/priority to all relevant State Authorities/Ministries as well as the opportunity to deal with all issues in a prompt and efficient manner.

These new services go hand in hand with completing the digitization/automation of the Shipping Deputy Ministry’s services offered to Shipping companies. The transformation to a purely digital environment, shaping the “one-stop-service” support framework, will create advanced dynamics for the Cyprus Shipping Registry and its users.

Our Industry also looks forward to the launch of the decision of the House of Representatives to form a Cyprus Shipping Company with Limited Liability, which will improve further the competitiveness of the Cyprus Flag internationally, as well as simplify the procedures and the operating regime of the Cyprus Shipping companies that are owners of Cyprus ships.

With regard now to the Industry’s “Green” Transformation efforts and not only, it is proposed to examine the possibility of establishing a Government endorsed Specialized Financing Institution for the Shipping/Transport Sector, which will focus exclusively on providing competitive finance for the purchase of ships or other modes of transport. Such an institution may have access to capital from regional public and private financing institutions engaged in “object” financing, thus accelerating the industry’s decarbonization path. The existing ship financing provisions by Cyprus Commercial Banks cannot accommodate the ever-increasing capital requirements for the Shipowning companies. This Financing Institution will enable the local shipowning sector to grow faster and greener, supporting both the Cyprus Flag and the local Shipping Industry. The above measures that have been already taken and those underway have been positively received by the Industry and the feedback is encouraging. Cyprus has set a new course, continuing its leading role, bringing added value to the European as well as to the International Shipping community.

We are proud that, in a challenging global environment of increasing international competition, shifting trade patterns and new regulations, Cyprus has responded with great resilience and adaptability to several challenges and has succeeded in effectively enhancing and further expanding its position and its total output on the international playing field. After all, there can be no doubt that Cyprus flag is a great choice and there are many good reasons for more shipping companies, especially large management companies stationed in Cyprus and major Greek shipowners, to flag their vessels and support the Cyprus Registry. As I mentioned before, we need a strong Registry to have a stronger voice in Europe. Our voice will not be enough if not backed up by more Cyprus-flagged ships Finally, developing a larger pool of highly qualified and skilled personnel is also a critical success factor in the efforts of Cyprus towards continual improvement and sustainable growth on a global scale. These are interesting, challenging times for the shipping industry. Our view is that safety of life and protection of the environment remain the priority for the industry.

Whether in operations, maintenance, crew training and of course, in sustainable operations, owners and operators should look to classification as partners in their journey. We have the experience across all shipping disciplines to support and advise our clients with the information and technical knowledge they need.

The path ahead promises new frontiers for shipping; new fuels, new technologies, even new operating models; those owners are able to successfully navigate this course will need to rely on class for continuous guidance.

Acting on decarbonization

Decarbonization is probably the biggest challenge our industry has ever faced. How to replace a well-known and well-understood means of propulsion with multiple solutions across energy efficiency and sustainable fuels – and to do so safely – is a huge requirement.

Our role at ABS is to provide the industry with the best possible information we can; we cannot make choices for our clients, we can only advise them of the options available to them and how these align with their fleets, trading patterns and long term plans. Part of this process involves a program of joint work with the industry to recognize novel and innovative technologies and to assess new flexible-fuel vessel designs for Approvals in Principle. Our work has encompassed all the major options for lower carbon shipping and extends to concepts such as shipping of liquid hydrogen and the use of carbon capture and storage onboard ship.

Leveraging digital technology

As computational power and vessel connectivity increase, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning will play expanding roles in how marine vessels and offshore assets are managed, repaired and operated.

Shipping confronts an era of change with support from class

ML has the potential to serve as the backbone of AI implementation in the marine and offshore industries. Powered by ML systems, natural language processing and machinery monitoring and analysis can perform essential functions on connected vessels and offshore assets.

Machinery analysis and monitoring — which combines ML with modelling and simulation on cloud and edge computing systems — can be used to analyze data from mechanical systems in real- time to help predict maintenance and repair needs and produce diagnostic analysis to identify root issues.

Sustainability solutions

Recent research projects indicate that onboard carbon capture and storage (CCS) might contribute positively to the decarbonization efforts of the shipping industry. So far, regulators have focused on improving vessel efficiencies and the use of alternative fuels; however, carbon reduction may require onboard CCS as one of several tools to decarbonize shipping.

While onboard CCS may not yet be mandated by national or international policy, shipowners and charterers may see market or regulatory forces drive the adoption of onboard carbon capture solutions and the development of mechanisms to facilitate the trade of captured carbon. CCS may require significant additional capital and operating expenditure, especially where regulations and technologies are still developing, and the economic feasibility is still not fully understood.

Training and education

Amid the excitement about the new technologies associated with decarbonization and digitalization, we must not lose sight of the people we expect to deliver it. Just as we are now seeing digital technologies begin to showcase their true potential for shipping, we are only just beginning to understand the ramifications of these technologies for the brave men and women who crew the ships.

What is clear already is that maritime skillsets will need to rapidly adapt to survive in the new digital normal, and shipowners, classification societies and seafarers are all going to have to embrace a new attitude and approach to learning.

Training for the skills we will need to adapt and thrive in the decade of change ahead, will require us to adopt new learning techniques for the benefit of our employees and our clients. The pace of change in our industry means that our people must absorb and embed new knowledge every day. The question for leadership organizations is not simply how we help them achieve this but, critically, how do we develop them for the skills we expect them to need in the future.

Με αφορμή τη ναυτιλιακή ζεύξη Ελλάδας - Κύπρου και τη θεαματική ζήτηση του επιβατικού κοινού για τα δρομολόγια του Ε/Γ-Ο/Γ που έχει δρομολογηθεί, για δεύτερη συνεχή χρονιά, στη γραμμή, ο κ. Κορκίδης τόνισε ότι η γραμμή αυτή συμβάλει, αφενός στην ενδυνάμωση, αμφίπλευρα, της τουριστικής κίνησης, αλλά και δίνει την ευκαιρία σε επιχειρήσεις της Κύπρου και της Ελλάδας να την αξιοποιήσουν για τη διακίνηση προϊόντων τους. Μάλιστα, εξετάστηκε και το ενδεχόμενο ανάπτυξης, από κοινού, πρωτοβουλιών για την χρονική επέκταση της λειτουργίας της γραμμής.

Ο Πρόεδρος του Ε.Β.Ε.Π., απευθυνόμενος στην Υφυπουργό, έθεσε, επίσης, δέσμη θεμάτων στα πεδία στα οποία μπορούν να αναπτυχθούν συνέργειες μεταξύ Κυπριακών και Ελληνικών Επιχειρήσεων, υπενθυμίζοντας ότι Ε.Β.Ε.Π και Ε.Β.Ε. Ο Πρόεδρος του Ε.Β.Ε.Π., αναφερόμενος στην Κυπριακή ναυτιλία, ενημέρωσε την Υφυπουργό για την ίδρυση της Ένωσης Ελληνικών Ναυπηγείων και το cluster των επιχειρήσεων που εκπροσωπεί, σημειώνοντας ότι η Ελλάδα είσελθε εκ νέου δυναμικά στον παγκόσμιο χάρτη των ναυπηγείων και της ναυπηγοεπισκευής, με μία πλειάδα εταιριών που καλύπτουν όλο το φάσμα των δραστηριοτήτων, ενώ κάλεσε την κα Υφυπουργό, να μεταφέρει στους Κύπριους πλοιοκτήτες το μήνυμα της επαναδραστηριοποίησης του συγκεκριμένου τομέα στην Ελλάδα. Συμφωνήθηκε, επίσης, να αναληφθούν από κοινού, και σε συνεργασία με το Επιμελητήριο Αμμοχώστου, πρωτοβουλίες για την προσέλκυση νέων στο ναυτικό επάγγελμα, καθώς Ελλάδα και Κύπρος διατηρούν τα ισχυρότερα νηολόγια στην Ε.Ε. Τέλος, στο πνεύμα της εξωστρεφούς πολιτικής που εφαρμόζει το Ε.Β.Ε.Π., εξετάζεται η παρουσία του Ε.Β.Ε.Π. και της Ένωσης Ελληνικών Ναυπηγείων στην έκθεση «Ναυτιλιακή Κύπρος 2023», που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 8-11 Οκτωβρίου 2023.

Από την πλευρά της, η υφυπουργός Ναυτιλίας της Κύπρου, Μαρίνα Χατζημανώλη, αναφέρθηκε στην πολιτική που ακολουθεί το Κυπριακό νηολόγιο το οποίο θα είναι πλήρως ψηφιοποιημένο μέχρι το 2024, αλλά και στις συνέργειες που μπορεί να αναπτυχθούν στα ναυτιλιακά fora από την Ελλάδα και την Κύπρο. Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον έδειξε η κα Χατζημανώλη και για την ψηφιακή πλατφόρμα port community system, υπό το ΥΝΝΠ, που προωθούν από κοινού Ε.Β.Ε.Π., Ν.Ε.Ε. και Ε.Ε.Ε., αλλά και για τα πεδία στα οποία θα μπορούσε να υπάρξει συνεργασία με τις αρμόδιες Κυπριακές αρχές.

Η συνάντηση έκλεισε με την υπόσχεση, το αμέσως προσεχές διάστημα και με ορίζοντα την ναυτιλιακή έκθεση της Κύπρου, να υπάρξουν και νέες συναντήσεις για την περαιτέρω ενδυνάμωση των διμερών σχέσεων.

Η Ναυτιλία ανταποκρίνεται στην πρόκληση της απαλλαγής

από τις εκπομπές αερίων του

θερμοκηπίου

Το Επιμελητήριο χαιρετίζει τις αποφάσεις που ελήφθησαν την περασμένη εβδομάδα στη συνεδρίαση της 80ης Συνόδου της Επιτροπής Προστασίας Θαλάσσιου Περιβάλλοντος του ΙΜΟ (MEPC80), σχετικά με τη στρατηγική του ΙΜΟ για τη μείωση των εκπομπών αερίων του θερμοκηπίου (GHG) από τα πλοία για το 2023 (Στρατηγική IMO GHG 2023), που θα οδηγήσει τη ναυτιλιακή βιομηχανία στον στόχο των καθαρών μηδενικών εκπομπών GHG έως το 2050.

Οι στόχοι που τίθενται στη Στρατηγική είναι φιλόδοξοι και η πραγματική πρόκληση τώρα ξεκινά. Η ανάπτυξη των μέτρων που θα βοηθήσουν τον κλάδο μας να επιτύχει τόσο τους στόχους των ενδεικτικών σημείων ελέγχου το 2030 και το 2040 όσο και τον συνολικό στόχο καθαρών μηδενικών εκπομπών GHG το 2050, θα απαιτήσει σκληρή δουλειά και συμβολή ειδικών για να διασφαλιστεί ότι, ενώ τα μέτρα θα επιτύχουν τους στόχους, ταυτόχρονα θα

είναι επίσης ρεαλιστικά, εφαρμόσιμα και ασφαλή για τα πλοία και τους ναυτικούς, για να επιτρέψουν στη ναυτιλιακή βιομηχανία να συνεχίσει να υπηρετεί την παγκόσμια οικονομία και την παγκόσμια πρόοδο στην πορεία προς την επίτευξη του στόχου του 2050. Το Επιμελητήριο θα επικεντρωθεί τώρα στην προετοιμασία και συμμετοχή στις διεργασίες του ΙΜΟ για την ανάπτυξη των απαραίτητων μέτρων. Το Επιμελητήριο συμμετείχε στη συνάντηση της MEPC80, με το Βοηθό Γενικό Διευθυντή, κ. Αλέξανδρο Ιωσηφίδη, ως μέλος της αντιπροσωπείας του Υφυπουργείου Ναυτιλίας, το οποίο ευχαριστούμε και συγχαίρουμε για τη συνεργασία και την ενεργό συμμετοχή τους στις διεργασίες της MEPC80.

Μέσα στα πλαίσια της περαιτέρω ενίσχυσης της συνεργασίας των δύο οργανισμών, το Κυπριακό Ναυτιλιακό Επιμελητήριο υπέγραψε Συμφωνία Συνεργασίας με το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, την Παρασκευή, 4 Αυγούστου 2023.

Η τελετή υπογραφής πραγματοποιήθηκε στα γραφεία του Επιμελητηρίου στη Λεμεσό, και το Πρωτόκολλο Συνεργασίας υπέγραψαν ο Πρόεδρος του Κυπριακού Ναυτιλιακού Επιμελητηρίου, κ. Θέμης Παπαδόπουλος και ο Πρύτανης του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, Δρ. Τάσος Χριστοφίδης.

Η Συμφωνία επισημοποιεί τη συνεργασία μεταξύ των δύο οργανισμών σε τομείς κοινού ενδιαφέροντος και στόχος της είναι να διευκολύνει την περαιτέρω ενίσχυση της ήδη υφιστάμενης εξαιρετικής συνεργασίας.

Με την υπογραφή της Συνεργασίας, τα δύο μέρη συμφώνησαν επισήμως να συνεργαστούν σε τομείς όπως, την πρακτική εμπειρία μάθησης και προσανατολισμού, την Ναυτιλιακή κατάρτιση και εκπαίδευση, την έρευνα και ανάπτυξη, την ανταλλαγή πληροφοριών και γνώσεων, και τις κοινές δραστηριότητες δημοσίων σχέσεων, προς όφελος τόσο του Πανεπιστημίου αλλά

και της Κυπριακής Ναυτιλίας.

Η Ένωση Τραπεζικών και Χρηματοοικονομικών Στελεχών Ελληνικής Ναυτιλίας, η Κινεζική Πρεσβεία στην Ελλάδα και η Κινεζική τράπεζα Export Import Bank of China με αφορμή της 10ης επετείου της Πρωτοβουλίας «Μία Ζώνη, Ένας Δρόμος» (Belt and Road Initiative), διοργάνωσαν από κοινού Συνέδριο Εργασίας στο Ναυτικό Όμιλο Πειραιά στις 6/9/2023 με θέμα «Πειραιάς: «Η σημασία της Κινεζικής χρηματοδότησης στην ανάπτυξη της Ελληνικής Ναυτιλίας»

Κύριοι ομιλητές της εκδήλωσης, ήταν ο Πρόεδρος της Τράπεζας Εξαγωγών και Εισαγωγών της Κίνας κ. Ren Shengjuin, ο Πρέσβης της Λ.Δ. Κίνας στην Ελλάδα κ. Xiao Junzheng, ο Πρόεδρος της Ένωσης Τραπεζικών και Χρηματοοικονομικών Στελεχών Ελληνικής Ναυτιλίας κ. Γιώργος Ξηραδάκης, και ο Υποδιοικητής της Τράπεζας της Ελλάδος Θεόδωρος Πελαγίδης ενώ παρουσίαση της χρηματοδοτικής πολιτικής της China Exim Bank έκανε ο κ. Luo Weibo, Senior Manager- Transport Financing Dept. Ο κ. Ξηραδάκης, πρόεδρος της Ένωσης Τραπεζικών και Χρηματοοικονομικών Στελεχών Ελληνικής Ναυτιλίας, κήρυξε την έναρξη του Συνεδρίου και αναφέρθηκε στο σημαντικό ρόλο που διαδραμάτισε η Ελληνική ναυτιλία στην οικονομική ανάπτυξη της Κίνας ενώ αναφερόμενος στον τραπεζικό ναυτιλιακό δανεισμό από την Κίνα, τόνισε ότι δύο Κινεζικές τράπεζες έχουν ήδη ανοίξει τα υποκαταστήματά τους στην Ελλάδα και ελπίζουμε ότι θα

ακολουθήσουν κι άλλες, καθώς η ελληνική ναυτιλία αφενός είναι η κορυφαία πλοιοκτήτρια αγορά στον κόσμο αφετέρου διαθέτει το κατάλληλο ανθρώπινο δυναμικό για την υποστήριξη της λειτουργίας της. Η Eλληνική ναυτιλία προσφέρει ελκυστικές ευκαιρίες για τους χρηματοδότες καθώς ο ελληνόκτητος στόλος αυξάνεται συνεχώς, αποδεικνύοντας τη δέσμευση των Ελλήνων πλοιοκτητών να επεκταθούν, συχνά με μεγαλύτερα πλοία, καθώς και να βελτιώσουν την αποτελεσματικότητα των στόλων τους. Από την εμπειρία μας στον κινεζικό ναυτιλιακό δανεισμό τόνισε ο κ.Ξηραδάκης μπορούμε να πούμε ότι έχει υποστεί τεράστιο μετασχηματισμό, γίνεται γρήγορα εξωστρεφής και πιο εξελιγμένος. Η παρουσία της EXIM Bank εδώ σήμερα είναι το καλύτερο ζωντανό παράδειγμα. Ο Υποδιοικητής της Τράπεζας της Ελλάδος καθηγητής Θ.Πελαγίδης εξέφρασε τη χαρά και τη ικανοποίησή του για την παρουσία του στην εκδήλωση γιορτάζοντας τη 10η επέτειο της υπογραφής του Μνημονίου διακυβερνητικής συνεργασίας με την Κίνα για την οικοδόμηση της Πρωτοβουλίας Belt and Road, συμφωνία την οποία η Ελλάδα ήταν η πρώτη ευρωπαϊκή χώρα που υπέγραψε. Τονίζοντας ότι η Κίνα είναι ένας από τους βασικούς εμπορικούς εταίρους της Ελλάδας, ανέφερε τον εντυπωσιακό αριθμό διακίνησης εμπορευματοκιβωτίων στο λιμάνι του Πειραιά ο οποίος το πρώτο τετράμηνο του τρέχοντος έτους, έφτασε τα 1.610 εκατ. Εμπορευματοκιβώτια. Στην ομιλία του, ο Πρόεδρος της Τράπεζας Εξαγωγών και Εισαγωγών της Κίνας, κ.Ren Shengjuin δήλωσε ότι

η CEXIM αποτελεί έναν από τους σημαντικότερους ναυτιλιακούς χρηματοδοτικούς οργανισμούς παγκοσμίως, παρέχοντας δάνεια που καλύπτουν τόσο τη ναυπήγηση πλοίων όσο και τη ναυτιλιακή εφοδιαστική αλυσίδα στο σύνολό της. Έχοντας χρηματοδοτήσει περισσότερους από 100 πλοιοκτήτες από περισσότερες από 30 χώρες σε έξι ηπείρους, έχει επίσης καθιερώσει συνεργασίες με περισσότερες από 30 μεγάλες ναυτιλιακές τράπεζες και κατατάσσεται πλέον στη δεύτερη θέση της παγκόσμιας κατάταξης ναυτιλιακών τραπεζών. Η Ελλάδα αποτελεί μια από τις σημαντικότερες ναυτιλιακές αγορές της CEXIM στηρίζοντας τους Έλληνες πλοιοκτήτες στην κατασκευή περισσότερων από 100 πλοίων διαφόρων τύπων στην Κίνα, παρέχοντας χρηματοδότηση και εγγυήσεις ύψους δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων. Η Τράπεζα θα συνεχίσει να προωθεί τη ναυτιλιακή χρηματοδοτική συνεργασία της Κίνας και Ελλάδας στο πλαίσιο της Πρωτοβουλίας «Μία Ζώνη, Ένας Δρόμος» μέσα από τέσσερις συγκεκριμένες προτάσεις.

Αυτές αναφέρονται στις επενδύσεις στην κατασκευή λιμένων, εφοδιαστικών κέντρων κ.ά., στη χρηματοδότηση κατασκευής «πράσινων» και περιβαλλοντικά φιλικών πλοίων κάθε τύπου στην Κίνα, στην ενίσχυση της επικοινωνίας μεταξύ εγχώριων και διεθνών κυβερνητικών τμημάτων, μεταξύ πρεσβειών, πλοιοκτητών, ναυπηγείων, χρηματοδοτικών ιδρυμάτων, νηογνωμόνων κ.ά. μερών και στη βελτίωση της ποιότητας και της αποτελεσματικότητας των υπηρεσιών της CEXIM με την ενσωμάτωση διαφόρων χρηματοοικονομικών προϊόντων όπως των πιστώσεων, του κεφαλαίου, της χρηματοδότησης του εμπορίου και των επενδύσεων.

Ο πρέσβης της Κίνας στην Ελλάδα κ. Xiao Junzheng, δήλωσε ότι η χρηματοδότηση της ναυτιλίας διαδραματίζει καίριο ρόλο στη διασφάλιση της ομαλής λειτουργίας της ναυτιλιακής βιομηχανίας

και των παγκόσμιων εφοδιαστικών αλυσίδων, προσφέροντας ζωτικής σημασίας σταθερότητα στις τελευταίες. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη το τεράστιο μέγεθος των στόλων της Κίνας και της Ελλάδας, οι ναυτιλιακοί και χρηματοοικονομικοί κύκλοι των δύο χωρών συμβάλλουν σημαντικά στο παγκόσμιο εμπόριο και την οικονομική ανάπτυξη. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, η ναυτιλιακή χρηματοδότηση της Κίνας αναπτύσσεται ταχύτατα με τα χρηματοπιστωτικά της ιδρύματα να αυξάνουν συνεχώς τη στήριξή τους στη ναυτιλία. «Καθώς οι χώρες μας είναι δύο μεγάλες ναυτιλιακές δυνάμεις, η Κίνα είναι πρόθυμη να αδράξει τις ευκαιρίες που προσφέρει η 10η επέτειος της Πρωτοβουλίας «Μία Ζώνη, Ένας Δρόμος» και να συνεργαστεί με τους Έλληνες φίλους της για να κατανοήσουμε καλύτερα το μέλλον της ναυτιλιακής χρηματοδότησης και να μοιραστούμε τις ευκαιρίες ανάπτυξης που αυτή θα προσφέρει» τόνισε ο κ. Πρέσβης. Στο διάλογο που ακολούθησε των ομιλιών, ο κ. Γ. Προκοπίου αφού παρότρυνε κι άλλους πλοιοκτήτες να συνεργαστούν με τη CEXIM, υποστήριξε ότι η συνεργασία του με την τράπεζα υπήρξε πάντα άψογη. Υπογράμμισε τους ισχυρούς δεσμούς φιλίας Ελλάδας και Κίνας σημειώνοντας ότι η ελληνική ναυτιλία και η κινεζική δεν είναι ανταγωνίστριες αλλά συνεργάζονται για την ευημερία. Επίσης σημείωσε την ραγδαία οικονομική ανάπτυξη της Κίνας τα τελευταία χρόνια και ότι θα πρέπει να βρούμε τρόπο να έχουμε μεγαλύτερη πρόσβαση στα κινέζικα φορτία. Ενώ ανέφερε την πολιτική της Ιαπωνίας η οποία διατήρησε μια πιο κλειστή στάση με αποτέλεσμα τώρα να έχει βυθιστεί η εγχώρια ναυπηγική της δραστηριότητα. Ο κ. Μ. Χανδρής ανέφερε ότι οι περιβαλλοντικές προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζει η ναυτιλιακή βιομηχανία καθιστούν τις παραγγελίες νέων πλοίων μια δύσκολη εξίσωση και εξέφρασε την ικανοποίησή του για τη δέσμευση της τράπεζας για χρηματοδότηση νέων

The Greek Maritime Golf Event is a tournament with great social work every year. This year, the top golf event supported Parents Association of Children with Cancer “Floga”. More specifically, during this year’s award ceremony to the winners, on Saturday, September 9, attendees had the opportunity to directly contribute the amount they wished by taking part in raffles for significant lottery prizes. The total amount collected was given to Floga, which stands by children suffering from cancer and their families, fights for better medical, mental, and social care for them, shares their fears and concerns, supports their struggle in any way possible, and vindicates substantial presence in issues relevant to the medical, mental, and social care of these children. A Unique Golf Experience

The Greek Maritime Golf Event’s production team made sure to provide a rich golfing experience throughout the tournament. The specially trained team of Miele Hellas was present at the golf courses offering freshly ground coffee, from beans of its own production and coffee machines with the ability to identify the user, for the best result, as well as tasty creations such as pizzas, German-style toast with syglino from Mani and sfela from Messinia, cheese pies and chicken pies with handmade phyllo, with the signature of Miele’s Chef. At the same time, all participants began their day with a breakfast starting kit containing nuts, dried fruits, breadsticks, and pasteli from Miele as well as unique sugar-free cereal bars from Daily Deli. Η Ένωσις Ελλήνων Εφοπλιστών (ΕΕΕ) δημοσίευσε την Ετήσια

Έκθεσή της για την περίοδο 2022-2023, στην οποία παρουσιάζονται

και αναλύονται οι σημαντικότερες εξελίξεις, σε θέματα ναυτιλιακής πολιτικής. Στην Έκθεση καταγράφονται στατιστικά στοιχεία και δεδομένα που αναδεικνύουν τη σημασία και τον ηγετικό ρόλο της ναυτιλίας των Ελλήνων σε εθνικό, ευρωπαϊκό και παγκόσμιο επίπεδο.

Σύμφωνα με την Ετήσια Έκθεση 2022-2023 της ΕΕΕ:

- H Ελλάδα παραμένει η μεγαλύτερη ναυτιλιακή χώρα στον κόσμο, καθώς ο ελληνικός εφοπλισμός ελέγχει το 21% της παγκόσμιας χωρητικότητας, με έναν στόλο 5.520 πλοίων.

- Η σημασία της ελληνικής ναυτιλίας είναι ακόμα μεγαλύτερη για την ΕΕ, καθώς για τους τύπους πλοίων στρατηγικής σημασίας, πάνω από το 70% του κοινοτικού στόλου ελέγχεται από ελληνικά συμφέροντα. Ο ελληνόκτητος στόλος συμβάλλει καθοριστικά στη διασφάλιση της επισιτιστικής ασφάλειας και της ενεργειακής αυτονομίας της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης. - Η ελληνική ναυτιλιακή κοινότητα επενδύει συνεχώς σε νέα, πιο αποδοτικά πλοία και τεχνολογίες, μειώνοντας έτσι σταθερά το περιβαλλοντικό αποτύπωμα του κλάδου.

Η Ετήσια Έκθεση 2022-2023 της ΕΕΕ παρουσιάζει με περιεκτικό τρόπο τα κύρια θέματα που απασχόλησαν τον παγκόσμιο δημόσιο ναυτιλιακό διάλογο τους τελευταίους 12 μήνες, προβάλλοντας

παράλληλα τις βασικές θέσεις και τις σχετικές δράσεις της ΕΕΕ για κάθε θέμα.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η Ετήσια Έκθεση 2022-2023 της Ένωσης Ελλήνων Εφοπλιστών περιλαμβάνει ενότητες για τα ζητήματα της ανταγωνιστικότητας, της χρηματοδότησης και για το ανθρώπινο δυναμικό της ναυτιλίας. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δίνεται στις εξελίξεις που αφορούν στην απανθρακοποίηση του κλάδου τόσο σε διεθνές επίπεδο, με την αναθεώρηση της Στρατηγικής του ΙΜΟ για τη μείωση των εκπομπών αερίων του θερμοκηπίου, όσο και σε ευρωπαϊκό επίπεδο με την υιοθέτηση νομοθετικών μέτρων του πακέτου «Fit-for-55» (ένταξη της ναυτιλίας στο EU ETS, Κανονισμός FuelEU Maritime).

Τέλος, καταγράφεται συνοπτικά και το πολυδιάστατο έργο κοινωνικής αλληλεγγύης του ελληνικού εφοπλισμού στους τομείς της υγείας, της παιδείας, της πρόνοιας και της στήριξης των ευπαθών ομάδων και της αντιμετώπισης κρίσεων.

Ένωσις Ελλήνων Εφοπλιστών (ΕΕΕ) χαιρετίζει θερμά την απόφαση της υπουργικής διάσκεψης στην Γκόα για τη δημιουργία κόμβων διαθεσιμότητας εναλλακτικών ναυτιλιακών καυσίμων (Clean Energy Marine Hubs – CEM Hubs).

Αυτή είναι ουσιαστικά η πρώτη παγκόσμια συμφωνία για την απανθρακοποίηση της ναυτιλίας στην οποία συμμετέχουν όλοι οι εμπλεκόμενοι κλάδοι, κυβερνητικοί και ιδιωτικοί φορείς από την αλυσίδα ενέργειας στη ναυτιλία. Στόχος είναι να υποστηριχθεί η παραγωγή, μεταφορά και χρήση καυσίμων χαμηλής περιεκτικότητας σε άνθρακα για όλες τις βιομηχανίες, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του κλάδου της ναυτιλίας.

Η ΕΕΕ στηρίζει θερμά την πρωτοβουλία αυτή. Η διαθεσιμότητα εναλλακτικών και κατάλληλων drop-in καυσίμων είναι ζωτικής σημασίας για την απανθρακοποίηση του υφιστάμενου στόλου. Οι

κόμβοι (CEM Hubs) είναι απαραίτητοι για την ενεργειακή μετάβαση της ναυτιλίας, εξυπηρετώντας την παγκόσμια μεταφορά και διαθεσιμότητα πράσινων καυσίμων.

«Η δημιουργία κόμβων ναυτιλιακών καυσίμων καθαρής ενέργειας θα συμβάλλει τα μέγιστα στην παραγωγή ασφαλών, εναλλακτικών καυσίμων για τη ναυτιλία και κυρίως θα δώσει σε όλα τα ποντοπόρα πλοία ισότιμη πρόσβαση σε αυτά. Είμαστε στην αρχή ενός μεγάλου ταξιδιού.

Ο στόχος είναι κοινός και η δράση πολυσχιδής. Η δυναμική αυτής της σημαντικής πρωτοβουλίας δεν πρέπει να χαθεί. Η Avenir LNG αναθέτει τη διαχείριση τριών πλοίων τροφοδοσίας LNG στην Wilhelmsen Ship

Η εταιρεία Avenir LNG Limited (Avenir), παγκόσμιος προμηθευτής ενέργειας για μικρής κλίμακας LNG και ιδιοκτήτρια πλοίων μεταφοράς αερίου, με έδρα το Λονδίνο, προχώρησε στην ανάθεση της διαχείρισης τριών πλοίων LNG Bunker στην Wilhelmsen Ship Management (Wilhelmsen). Τα πλοία που ανατέθηκαν είναι τα Avenir Achievement, Avenir Ascension και Avenir Aspiration.

What are the latest developments regarding BWMS today? What should we expect from now on?

Ballast water management systems (BWMS) remain a key focus in the maritime industry for their vital role in protecting the marine environment, while leaving vessels’ operation unaffected. Recent developments have aimed at stricter regulations, better user-friendly treatment technologies, and improvements to system efficiency while reducing energy usage to meet the new industry demands and future greenhouse gas emission regulations. The Ecochlor BWMS stands out as incredibly easy system for crew members to operate and boasts one of the lowest power requirements in the industry.

As to what we should expect going forward? There will be continued discussions, along with further research regarding “Ballasting in Challenging Waters” and the storage of treated sewage or grey water in ballast tanks and additional changes may be implemented after the Experience Building Phase is reviewed and completed.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has indicated that new federal discharge standards for VGP and VIDA for vessels will be released in autumn 2024. Until then, the current guidelines will remain in place.

Shipping companies have until September 8, 2024, to comply with the D-2 ballast standards, allowing them less than a year to meet the regulations. It is crucial to note that some regions outside of the BWM Convention, like the United States, have already implemented the regulations and shipping companies have started facing legal consequences, including financial penalties and port delays for non-compliance.

What do you think are the important topics on ballast water management?

Shipowners have voiced concerns about the complexity of certain BWMSs and the lack of proper training for crew members to operate these systems, particularly when faced with less-than-ideal water conditions. This becomes especially problematic when ships undergo port state control inspections and the system proves difficult to use. However, the EcoOne® filterless BWMS, equipped with hybrid options, provides a crew-friendly solution. It allows ships to operate efficiently in all water conditions without the need to alter operations or add extra steps to the process, thus giving the owner more flexibility in choosing vessel trade routes.

A more recent problem that has come to light is the past decision-making process for ship’s BWMS. In many cases, these decisions were made solely based on cost and type approvals, without considering the practical implications of using a system that may not be suitable for the ship’s specific trade route. As a result, some shipowners have been forced to replace their initial BWMS due to these limitations.

The silver lining is that this presents an opportunity for owners to choose a more energy-efficient model, ensuring compliance with the BWM Convention guidelines as well as future emissions regulations. Ecochlor stands at the forefront, offering a per-

With the global shipping industry facing increasing pressure to reduce emissions, shipowners have been actively seeking innovative solutions like our EcoOne® filterless BWMS. Our filter-free system utilizes approximately 10kW of power for the largest ships as opposed to an electrochlorination system operating at about 500 kW or more when in less-than-optimal water conditions. What steps should vessel owners and operators to ensure that they are informed on any regulatory updates and to keep their ballast water management systems compliant?

For vessels that still need a BWMS to be fitted, the owners should really take advantage of the feedback gathered by industry experts rather than choosing based on a systems’ type approval. I would also suggest they take a hard look at the BWMS operating limitations stated on their respective type approval certificates. Other things to review would be the effectiveness of the technology to be chosen, its ‘actual’ costs, and any additional operation requirements. These research elements are vital to ensuring that system is the best fit for the vessel and its trade route before making any decisions.

Next, proper installation and maintenance are crucial to guarantee the system’s effectiveness. Certain components, like TRO sensors and electrodes, may need frequent calibration and upkeep. It is essential that you are aware of the hidden costs and time needed for your crew to handle these additional tasks when you are deciding for the next BWMS retrofit or newbuilding.

Moreover, proper ballast water management includes not only using an effective treatment but also recordkeeping and compliance with reporting requirements.

Last, an easy but arguably an important step, is that vessel owners and operators must stay informed about the latest policies and guidelines released by their respective regulatory bodies. The IMO and the U.S. Coast Guard regularly update their guidelines on BWMS, and it is important for vessel owners and operators to keep

up with the latest developments. What will be the next on the BWMS regulatory agenda?

The outcomes of the 80th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the IMO revealed some progress in the development of regulatory guidelines for the treatment of ballast water. The Convention Review Plan under the Experience Building Phase (EBP) of the BWM Convention was approved and will be disseminated as BWM.2/Circ.79, indicating a significant step forward in reinforcing the existing framework of the Convention.

Several amendments were approved with a focus on recordkeeping and reporting which will enter into force on 1 February 2025. Moreover, amendments to Guidelines (G4) (Ballast Water Management Plans) and (G6) (Ballast Water Exchange related to these recordkeeping developments were adopted by the Committee. A notable change is the draft amendment to BWM Convention Regulations

A-1 and B-2 for the use of electronic record books. The amendments pave the way for the use of digital technologies making it easier for operators to manage their ballast water and comply with regulations

In line with this overarching goal, the Protocol for verification of ballast water Compliance Monitoring Devices (CMDs) was also approved and will be published as BWM.2/Circ.78. This development is expected to help standardize the monitoring devices used to measure compliance with ballast water treatment requirements.

Despite progress made in several areas, however, the guidelines for ships operating in challenging water quality conditions were not finalized at MEPC 80. There is an urgent need for guidance, because failure to do so could result in individual member states developing their own regulations and guidance, creating a patchwork of regulations that could potentially increase the complexities of understanding ballast water management for shipping companies.

To avoid this scenario, several delegations have agreed to work through the intersession towards reaching a consensus on the guidance at MEPC 81, with the goal of ensuring uniform implementation of BW regulations across all countries. Similarly, to support the goals of the EBP, Member States are being encouraged to conduct more sampling and analysis during Port State Control inspections to gain further knowledge on the operation of BWMS.

The maritime industry is shifting towards decarbonization with the introduction of “green” ship technologies. What are the “green marine” technologies and “green marine” options of today?

One of the most effective ways to reduce emissions is by using alternative fuels, however, we all know these alternatives are not commercially viable today but a solution for the future. The word ‘Pollution’ has become synonymous with modern day living. Be it atmospheric pollution from the burning of fossil fuels, the release of toxic substances to riverways and coastal waters, or the emission of artificial light that blankets our cities with a ‘night glow’ that devastates local nocturnal biodiversity. The effects of pollution have become symbolic of our most pressing global challenge.

One category of pollution that until recently has sat on the edge of the regulatory spotlight is noise. We know that rising noise levels can negatively impact ecosystems; nowhere is this more prevalent than in our great lakes and oceans. We also know that sounds travel faster and further through denser substances; nearly 5 times faster through water, and 15 times faster through steel as compared to air. Therefore, continuous noise emitted from a solid ship’s hull into a liquid ocean creates widespread detrimental impact to aquatic life and ocean ecosystems.

Excessive noise reduces the ability of animals to communicate with offspring, potential mates and other group members, whilst simultaneously limiting the perception of environmental cues required for survival e.g. to avoid predators, to find food and to safely navigate migration routes. On average a containership emits roughly the same amount as noise as a commercial plane at take-off (170dB), as such it is recognized that Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) from commercial shipping will have long term negative consequences on marine life, particularly marine mammals. In response, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) stepped up in 2014 with the approval of guidelines for reduction of URN from commercial shipping focusing on the design, specification, operation and maintenance of on-board machinery including prime movers and propellers. Draft revised guidelines

were further agreed by the IMO sub-committee on ship design and construction in January 2023.

Given stronger regulatory guidelines, what can the modern-day ship owner do to tackle this issue?

URN from shipping is predominantly a by-product of the vibration of onboard mechanical equipment and the sound created through the mass implosion of vapour bubbles in the undesirable process of (propeller) cavitation. URN can become worse when one source of vibration onboard the ship harmonizes with another, creating vibration amplitudes and URN that is greater than the sum of their individual parts.

Luckily there are many technological solutions and recommended operational practises that can work to reduce URN that does not have to come at the expense of operational efficiency and commercial performance. For instance:

1.Adaptation to propellers design and operation e.g. reduced RPM/ knot, deeper propeller immersion, and selection of contra loaded tip propellers;

2. Wake flow modification e.g. twisted rudders, propeller boss cap fins or Mewis Ducts;

3. Careful selection of machinery at new build and in particular the resilience of support mountings to impede transmission of vibration to the outer hull envelope e.g. spring mounts;

4. Selection of alternative fuel and energy generators will also play a role given inherent quieter operation e.g. solutions such as fuel cells and battery storage move away from noisy mechanical energy generation to silent chemical reaction;

The Case for Hull Air Lubrication to Reduce Underwater Noise

Arguably one of the most promising solutions for reducing URN is the use of a hull ALS. These systems involve the injection of air bubbles on a ship’s hull to reduce friction and shear stress between the vessel and the surrounding water. This not only reduces fuel consumption but also contributes to a significant reduction in underwater noise emissions. Similarly, the presence of bubbles in the region of the propeller is believed to augment the pressure domain and dampen propeller noise. Using bubbles for noise reduction is not new, bubble curtains surrounding subsurface construction sites have been proven effective, particularly when the frequency concentrations of noise emissions are factored in. In May 2023, Vineyard Wind conducted a trial of bubble curtain technology to reduce the subsea noise impact of pile-driving during installation of wind turbine foundations There are also other efforts such as the SATURN EU-funded project that is researching URN. Tests are underway on a model coastal tanker with air bubbles being injected to measure the difference and behaviour of URN.

Whilst the concept of bubble curtains for containing excessive noise is proven in theory, in practice its implementation within a ship’s air lubrication systems needs careful consideration. ALS designers and ship owners alike should consider:

1. Net noise: It is important to factor in the noise created by the ALS itself. Unlike twisted rudders and advanced hull coatings, many ALS require the operation of heavy banks of compressors, motors and fans to produce the bubble layer which themselves vibrate and create noise. Whilst any one compressor may not create significant noise emission to exceed the vessels overall emissions, a bank of compressors that may collectively resonate with the natural frequency of other sources of onboard vibration could act to diminish or even reverse the noise cancelling effect of an ALS system.

2. Bubble carpet design: The bubble curtain acts to create a differential acoustic impedance between the bubble layer and surrounding water allowing unwanted sound to be absorbed. The size, dynamics and concentration of air bubbles within the bubble curtain influence the differential acoustic impedance and therefore bring about a more or less effective sound absorbing effect. Having refined control of the properties of the bubble carpet will impact the overall noise reducing efficacy of the system.

IMO is Taking Action

Although not as visible as oil spills and smoke plumes, noise can have a devastating impact on marine ecosystems. Unfortunately, the problem is only getting worse, with underwater noise levels quadrupling since 1992. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the IMO is taking action to address underwater noise in the global merchant fleet. Given the ever-increasing role of data in ship energy efficiency and operations, it is not out of the question to consider the installation of sensors that continuously monitor URN allowing real time feedback for speed correction (suppression of propeller cavitation) and ALS set points for optimal noise cancelling effect. This approach can be supported by regulatory compliance requirements and the growing reliance on data for ship energy efficiency and operations.

In sum, the problem of underwater radiated noise in our oceans is an urgent matter that requires a concerted effort from the shipping industry, governments, conservationists, and other stakeholders. With the deployment of innovative technologies, stringent regulation, and responsible practices, we can minimize the impact of human activities on marine life and preserve the health and beauty of our oceans for generations to come.

United States EPA is Cracking Down on Ballast Water Discharge Violations

Protecting the integrity of its waters is a top priority for the United States (U.S). To prevent the introduction of non-native aquatic species, the U.S has implemented strict regulations for ships that release ballast water within its borders. Unlike many other countries, the U.S is not a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) BWM Convention. As a result, ships operating in their waters must adhere to a different set of ballast water regulations.

To ensure compliance, the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA) was established under the Clean Water Act. This act requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create national standards for incidental discharges, known as the Vessel General Permit (VGP). The VGP includes specific regulations regarding the inspection, testing, and reporting of ballast water discharge.

These self-inspections play a critical role in allowing ship owners and operators to promptly identify and address any issues related to ballast water discharge. By doing so, they ensure compliance with the VGP and U.S law; it is important to note that violations of these regulations are taken very seriously.

Experience Building Phase in the US

As stated previously, shipowners should be aware that the U.S is not party to the BWM Convention, therefore, the IMO Experience Building Phase does not apply in US waters. The U.S. Coast Guard and EPA closely monitor ballast water discharges, BWM plans and recordkeeping, as well as any violations under the Clean Water Act. Whilst there are some limited exceptions for the unmanaged discharge of ballast water, vessels that have missed their BWMS compliance date or have unreported malfunctioning BWMSs are not given much leniency. Violators of these regulations can face severe consequences, including fines, damaged reputations and / or experience significant delays in port.

Recent EPA Penalties for Non-compliant BWM

The U.S. EPA has recently reached settlements with three shipping companies over non-compliance with the VGP under the Clean Water Act. As part of the agreements, the companies will pay penalties for

various violations related to ballast water discharge, recordkeeping, inspection, monitoring, and reporting.

A company, faced a penalty of $165,000, aimed at addressing its shortcomings in meeting several requirements, including properly treating ballast water before discharging it and adhering to compliance deadlines at U.S. ports. The company also neglected to record inspection findings, calibrate their BWMS, monitor discharges, and provide accurate information in their annual reports.

In addition, an entity, paid $137,000 in penalties in relation to its vessels. The company was found noncompliant in various aspects related to ballast water discharge, conducting comprehensive inspections, calibrating ballast water treatment systems annually, monitoring and sampling discharges from treatment systems and inaccurate reporting. Likewise, a privately owned company, received penalties amounting to $200,000 for violating multiple requirements, including failing to meet ballast water limitations for biological indicators and biocide residuals during discharges at various U.S ports and neglecting annual calibrations of its BWMS, monitoring and sampling discharges from treatment systems, and providing incomplete and inaccurate information in its annual reports.

These settlements reflect EPA’s growing commitment to ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. As part of the agreements, the companies have committed to implementing corrective measures and adhering to the regulations set forth by the VGP in the future.

Conclusion

The occurrence of non-compliance issues, such as missing filing deadlines, system maintenance problems, recordkeeping deficiencies, VGP test failures, and inaccurate reporting, highlights the importance of shipowners and operators familiarizing themselves with U.S regulations. It is crucial that proactive measures are taken to ensure that vessels are always VIDA-compliant. Failure to comply can result in substantial repercussions for companies and their vessels.

The Editors of NAFS Magazine travelled in Nordhausen Germany at EAS BATTERIES headquarters. EAS BATTERIES specializes among others in solutions for hybrid electric and electric applications for ships and produces highest safety and flexibility for maritime applications. We met Dr Frank Diehl who is the Head of Sales & Marketing who gave an interview about the present and the future of the company as well as about the company’s plans regarding the shipping community.

For more than 20 years, EAS has played an essential role in the battery industry with high power solution and innovative manufacturing technologies. I would like to ask you how the company started, what were its first steps and if you ever thought that there would come a time when batteries would be so useful in reducing the environmental footprint of ships.

The EAS founders recognised lithium-ion batteries as a future market. With the corresponding know-how, it was all about continuously developing innovative battery solutions as well as efficient production technologies. Large-format cylindrical cells, LFP as a safe cell chemistry, energy-saving extrusion and an efficient contacting method are some of the most appealing ideas of more than 25 years of EAS history. Electromobility was not a central concern in the founding days as it is today, however, we took responsibility early on by developing both sustainable and safe cells and battery systems. For example, LFP was introduced just over ten years ago. The EAS innovation factory has been working with this material since the very beginning. This is the maximum experience from which the shipping industry in particular is now benefiting. EAS has developed battery systems for shipping before, but the maritime market first came into focus for us with our safe modular battery concept, called EASy Marine®

Human capital is one of the main corporate pillars of EAS. Tell us a little about your team, how it works and how you are enabling your people to use their growing expertise and create outstanding solutions to answer the complex needs of each individual project

With cell development, battery development and in-house cell production teams, we have three strong operational pillars that ensure the stability of EAS. At the same time, the teams are agile in themselves, so that we can react flexibly to customer wishes and realise them quickly. We manage the complexity of individual projects through the reliable and well-coordinated cooperation of the different competences in our teams. The motivation for own R&D activities is also very high at EAS, so that we can do real pioneering work in this constellation -all to the advantage of our current and future clients. Each of us brings in his or her talent, experience and know-how to drive the continuous further development. EASy Marine®, for example, has many spiritual fathers - or at least many spiritual godfathers. There is something in it from every employee. This is a great experience that welds people together.

sumption in shipping?

With a battery system such as EASy Marine® installed on board, diesel generators can be operated permanently in the so-called sweet spot. The sweet spot is the state when fuel consumption is lowest in relation to the power generated. In addition, the batteries compensate for load fluctuations, for example the propulsion load or the hotel load. This is called peak shaving or load levelling. Savings of up to 25 or even 30 percent of fuel are possible. It doesn’t get any more efficient than this. Whether diesel, LNG or fuel cells, the propulsion systems are operated more economically with the support of a ship’s battery. At the same time, their service life is extended through the use of a battery. In the long run, this is also an enormous gain in efficiency. Every ship owner should be able to benefit from this. And that is exactly what EASy Marine® enables. The modular design creates a battery system that can be adapted to almost any ship architecture. Dimensions and arrangement are individually variable. This means that ship owners can convert their propulsion systems to a fuel-optimised hybrid system.

Things are changing very fast in the shipping industry and it is very difficult to take for granted that today’s technology will work one hundred percent efficient and effective in the future. Do you believe that EASy Marine® is a product designed not only for today but also for the future, and why?

Yes, EASy Marine® is definitely a concept of the future. In the foreseeable time, there will be no efficient propulsion systems for ships that can do without the use of batteries. The future-oriented advantage of EASy Marine® lies in the fact that the battery system benefits

directly from the further development of cell technology. We continuously improve our cells and incorporate the innovations within our state-of-the-art cell portfolio into EASy Marine®. The same might be achieved also by using innovative third-party technologies. In addition, two further aspects speak for the future use of EASy Marine®, namely safety and sustainability. In the medium and most likely also in the long term, there will be no real alternative to lithium-ion technology. However, different materials are used within this technology, which have very different effects on safety and sustainability. We currently use LFP cells for our marine battery systems. This cell chemistry is considered the benchmark for safety. The battery can get hot in the event of a short circuit, overcharging or mechanical damage to the cell, but it won’t burn by itself. From what is known today, LFP will also remain among the safest materials in the future. At the same time, it is the most sustainable material. Iron and phosphorus - unlike cobalt, nickel or manganese - are not scarce resources. Lithium is also used more efficiently within this combination. These effects ensure cost reductions. The scarcity of the other materials is expected to drive up their price in the global effect. And in the face of the coming CO2 price, LFP will simply be cheaper in the long run. Basically, however, EASy Marine® functions independently of the chemistry in the used battery cells and will automatically adapt to future developments. This ensures the longterm attractiveness of our modular battery system on the market.

Do you believe that in the long term, a hybrid drive with fuel cells and batteries could represent a fully electric solution for shipping industry?

Yes. This will probably not be the only fully electric solution for

shipping, but it will most likely be the first when it comes to long distances.

What are the advantages of EASy Marine® and what are your plans for the future as a highly innovative niche supplier?

EASy Marine® as a high power system solution as available today has five distinct advantages:

- Extremely flexible architecture: Module based, no rack

- Very safe, reliable and durable chemistry: No fire, no propagation, highly enduring cells

These are the evident reasons for EASy Marine®. In addition, the fact that we produce our batteries and cells in Germany with materials from Europe is becoming more important. EASy Marine® is thus an autonomous battery system that is independent of other continents and based on European technologies. This set up ensures reliability - in use, in the supply chain, in quality and in sustainability

We are in the process of diversifying and expanding the EAS EASy Marine® offering. Beside this, continuous improvements in cell technology, as just described, are directly transferred to EASy Marine® - regardless of whether they were originally developed for the maritime industry, automotive or space. Safety on the water will here always be our mission.

EASy Marine® is present in the large maritime market of Greece through your exclusive collaboration with Euploia Drydocks and Services Ltd. What do you expect to achieve with this Agency Agreement in the field of marine battery solutions?

For EAS, the Greek maritime sector is attractive because it has a high potential for electrification and hybridisation. Therefore, our vision of the Greek maritime market is to become the leading maritime battery solution supplier - together with our partners from Euploia. The Euploia team operates locally, is well connected and absolutely familiar with the market. So we expect a lot from this cooperation and see it as a long-term perspective for the positioning of our maritime solutions in the Greek market.

What other people say about EASy Marine®? Do you have any feedback from the shipping industry related to your product?

Our project partners appreciate the extreme performance, the mechanical flexibility and last but not least the unique safety level of the system. Overall, the understanding of green propulsion is also growing within the shipping industry. This is a movement we support with all our power.

Do you think batteries will be a completely reliable solution and widely used in shipping in the quest for zero emissions?

We have created all the conditions for zero emission shipping with batteries. So I simply will answer this question with a clear yes.

He clarified that this event does not in essence constitute some form of contest or competitive award ceremony, but instead this is a token of “recognition” towards publicly listed shipping companies, which are not only active in the shipping industry but are also active on a daily basis in a different “field”… that of international capital markets and are obliged to abide by a framework of corporate governance and investor reporting rules that are being set by US securities laws and the US Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as by the regulations of each respective exchange, NYSE or NASDAQ.

The first Board Meeting of the new term was held on Thursday 14 September, at the club’s offices in Piraeus, where the new Executive Committee was unanimously elected, with Costis Frangoulis serving as President for a third consecutive term.

On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, the General Assembly and the election of a new Board of Governors of the Propeller Club, Port of Piraeus took place.

The 2023 General Assembly and Elections of the International Propeller Club, Port of Piraeus, were held at the impressive Faros Hall of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre on 12 September 2023.

This was a resounding success with 586 participating members, representing 65% of the membership body. 311 attended in person with the rest participating remotely.

Members of the Election Committee were Yannis Varvitsiotis and Theodora Leka, with Eleftherios Archontis as Chairman.

43 candidates contested 16 seats on the Board of Governors. 3 candidates stood for the 3 positions on the Audit Committee. 10 members of the previous Board were re-elected.

following term, and partial amendment of articles of the club’s statutes were all unanimously approved during the General Assembly and the President’s reading of the activity report.

Costis Frangoulis presented Dimitri Vassilacos with a special award recognizing his long service to the Club, having served for five consecutive terms. Mr. Frangoulis thanked Mr. Vassilacos for his important contribution, noting that he has left high expectations for his successor.

The proceedings included a full account of the impressive achievements of the past two years.

One of the most significant achievements has been the financial strengthening of the Club, coupled with an unprecedented growth in membership.

During his address, Mr. Frangoulis also spoke about the increased social work of the Club, the acquisition of the Club’s new offices in Piraeus, the establishment of the Student Port and the launch of the Hellenic-American Shipping Gala as a second major annual event, along with the AMVER Awards.

During the elections, and while waiting for the results, members enjoyed a light cocktail. It was a great opportunity for everyone to come together and exchange thoughts and experiences, setting the tone for a new, creative and challenging year.

Στο πλαίσιο της Ευρωπαϊκής Διάσκεψης για τη Ναυτιλία, η Ένωσις Ελλήνων Εφοπλιστών (EEE) σε συνεργασία με την Ένωση Γερμανών Εφοπλιστών (VDR) διοργάνωσαν στις 19/9/2023 με επιτυχία κοινή εκδήλωση στις Βρυξέλλες, με την παρουσία των Προέδρων τους, της κας. Μελίνας Τραυλού και κας. Gaby Bornheim, αντίστοιχα.

Στο πλαίσιο της διοργάνωσης, η Πρόεδρος της Ένωσης Ελλήνων Εφοπλιστών, κα Μελίνα Τραυλού, δήλωσε: «Ελληνική και γερμανική ναυτιλία συνενώνουμε τις δυνάμεις μας για την ανάδειξη του στρατηγικού ρόλου της ναυτιλίας στην ασφάλεια, στη σταθερότητα, στην ευημερία και στην ενεργειακή ανεξαρτησία της Ευρώπης και των πολιτών της. Η εκδήλωση εστίασε στη στρατηγική σημασία της ναυτιλίας για την ΕΕ. Σημαίνοντες αξιωματούχοι της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής και εκπρόσωποι της ναυτιλιακής βιομηχανίας είχαν την ευκαιρία να ανταλλάξουν απόψεις για το πώς η Ευρώπη μπορεί να διατηρήσει και να ενισχύσει την ανταγωνιστικότητα της ναυτιλίας της. Η εκδήλωση, επίσης, ανέδειξε τη ζωτική σημασία της ναυτιλίας για τη διασφάλιση της επισιτιστικής ασφάλειας και της ενεργειακής αυτονομίας της ΕΕ, καθώς η συντριπτική πλειονότητα των βασικών εισαγωγών τροφίμων και ενέργειας μεταφέρεται από πλοία.

Ελλάδας στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, στην εναρκτήρια ομιλία του τόνισε τα εξής: «Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση καλείται όχι μόνο να διαφυλάξει, αλλά και να εγγυηθεί την παγκόσμια ανταγωνιστικότητα και τη μακροπρόθεσμη βιωσιμότητα αυτού του στρατηγικού τομέα.

Αυτή είναι μια πρόκληση την οποία πρέπει όλοι να αντιμετωπίσουμε με επιτυχία προς όφελος της Ευρώπης και των ευρωπαίων πολιτών».

Η κ. Φωτεινή Ιωαννίδου, Αναπληρώτρια Διευθύντρια στην Γενική Διεύθυνση Θαλάσσιων Μεταφορών και Επικεφαλής του Τμήματος Θαλάσσιας Ασφάλειας της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής, επεσήμανε ότι: «Η ναυτιλία αποτελεί βασικό πυλώνα της ευρωπαϊκής οικονομίας. Δεν μπορεί κανείς να αμφισβητήσει τη στρατηγική της σημασία για την ασφάλεια του ενεργειακού εφοδιασμού μας καθώς και για άλλα βασικά υλικά και αγαθά. Χρειαζόμαστε μια ευρωπαϊκή ναυτιλιακή βιομηχανία και ναυτιλιακά clusters που να είναι πράσινα, ανταγωνιστικά και βιώσιμα, ώστε να μπορούν να αντιμετωπίσουν με επιτυχία τις επικείμενες προκλήσεις».

Ακολούθως, ο κ. Hans Van Steen, Ανώτατος Σύμβουλος της Γενικής Διεύθυνσης Ενέργειας της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής

δήλωσε «Η ναυτιλία αποτελεί έναν ανθεκτικό πυλώνα στήριξης

για την ΕΕ σε δύσκολες περιόδους όπως η τρέχουσα ενεργειακή

κρίση, εξασφαλίζοντας τη σταθερότητα στην Ευρώπης. Ο τομέας συμβάλλει στην απανθρακοποίηση της Ευρώπης μέσω της μεταφοράς καυσίμων χαμηλού ή μηδενικού αποτυπώματος άνθρακα. Είναι λοιπόν σημαντικό να διασφαλιστεί ένα σταθερό και

κατάλληλο κανονιστικό πλαίσιο στην ΕΕ για την ναυτιλία της».

Εκ μέρους της ΕΕΕ, ο κ. Δημήτριος Ι. Φαφαλιός, Γραμματέας του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της ΕΕΕ και Πρόεδρος/Διευθυντής της Fafalios Shipping S.A., δήλωσε ότι: «Η ναυτιλία έχει αποδειχθεί ανθεκτικός πυλώνας στήριξης σε δύσκολους καιρούς, διασφαλίζοντας τη βιωσιμότητα και την ευημερία της Ευρώπης σε διάφορες κρίσεις, ενώ ταυτόχρονα αποτελεί και το πιο φιλικό προς το περιβάλλον μέσο μεταφορών. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση πρέπει να αναγνωρίσει την ναυτιλία ως στρατηγικό εταίρο στην χάραξη της πολιτικής της και να εξασφαλίσει τη διατήρηση και την ενίσχυση της ανταγωνιστικότητάς της σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο».

Τέλος, ο κ. Lucius Bunk, ιδρυτής/Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος της Auerbach Shipping και μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της Ένωσης Γερμανών Εφοπλιστών (VDR), επεσήμανε ότι «Η ναυτιλία χρειάζεται επειγόντως ασφάλεια ρυθμιστικού πλαισίου λόγω της ανομοιογένειάς της. Σε αντίθετη περίπτωση, ο κίνδυνος άστοχων επενδύσεων είναι πολύ υψηλός και θα αποδυναμώσει την ανταγωνιστικότητα των μικρομεσαίων επιχειρήσεων».

Οι εργασίες της εκδήλωσης κατέληξαν στο συμπέρασμα ότι η ναυτιλία αποτελεί στρατηγικό πλεονέκτημα και ακρογωνιαίο λίθο για την ασφάλεια και την ευημερία της Ευρώπης. Αναδείχθηκε με σαφήνεια το μήνυμα προς τα θεσμικά όργανα της ΕΕ ότι είναι ύψιστης σημασίας η διατήρηση της παγκόσμιας ανταγωνιστικότητας της ευρωπαϊκής ναυτιλίας και η ενίσχυσή της με στοχευμένες και βιώσιμες πολιτικές.

Τι συζητήθηκε την πρώτη ημέρα του European Shipping Summit στις Βρυξέλλες

Η καρδιά της Ευρωπαϊκής Ναυτιλίας χτυπά στις Βρυξέλλες καθώς σήμερα και αύριο είναι σε πλήρη εξέλιξη το European Shipping Summit.

Πολλά και σημαντικά τα θέματα που απασχολούν την Ευρωπαϊκή ναυτιλία και ισχυρές προσωπικότητες της ναυτιλίας παρευρίσκονται στις Βρυξέλλες προκειμένου να καταθέσουν τις απόψεις τους

σχετικά με τα καυτά ζητήματα που ταλανίζουν τη ναυτιλία και το παγκόσμιο εμπόριο.

Η πράσινη ναυτιλία χρειάζεται πολύ δρόμο ακόμα καθώς το μέλλον των καυσίμων είναι θολό αλλά και η χρηματοδότηση γίνεται με το σταγονόμετρο.

Οι Ευρωπαϊκές τράπεζες δεν αυξάνουν το πορτοφόλι της χρηματοδότησης της πράσινης ναυτιλίας την ίδια ώρα μάλιστα που οι Κινεζικές τράπεζες παίζουν μπάλα στον Πειραιά.

Οι ομιλητές συγκλίνουν στην συνεργασία ως κλειδί της επιτυχίας για μία πράσινη ναυτιλία.

Η ναυτιλία αποτελεί ακρογωνιαίο λίθο της ευρωπαϊκής οικονομικής ασφάλειας: Ενεργειακή ασφάλεια, επισιτιστική ασφάλεια, ασφάλεια εφοδιασμού καταναλωτικών αγαθών. Προκειμένου η ευρωπαϊκή

ναυτιλία να διατηρήσει τη στρατηγική ανταγωνιστικότητά της και

ταυτόχρονα να επιτύχει τους στόχους της Πράσινης Συμφωνίας, πρέπει να επιτύχουμε τη σωστή ενεργειακή μετάβαση.

Το πρόγραμμα Fit for 55 έχει πλέον τεθεί σε εφαρμογή και έχει θέσει φιλόδοξους στόχους για την απαλλαγή του ναυτιλιακού τομέα από τις ανθρακούχες εκπομπές. Ταυτόχρονα, η ΕΕ έχει θέσει επί τάπητος φιλόδοξα σχέδια για την επίτευξη ενός βιομηχανικού μετασχηματισμού με μηδενικούς ρύπους έως το 2050.

Η Ένωση Ελλήνων Εφοπλιστών, σε κοινή πρωτοβουλία με την Ένωση Γερμανών Εφοπλιστών, διοργάνωσε σήμερα συζήτηση με αξιωματούχους της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και ειδικούς του ναυτιλιακού κλάδου στις Βρυξέλλες.

Η συζήτηση είχε τίτλο «Europe gets dark without Shipping»

αναδεικνύοντας την σοβαρότητα της κατάστασης αλλά και την σημασία της ναυτιλίας στο παγκόσμιο εμπόριο και την εφοδιαστική αλυσίδα.

Σύμφωνα με τον Φίλιππο Φιλή, Πρόεδρο της ECSA (European Community Shipowners’ Associations) μία σωστά σχεδιασμένη και ολοκληρωμένη ναυτιλία που θα συνεχίσει να προσφέρει τις υπηρεσίες της στο παγκόσμιο εμπόριο και την εφοδιαστική αλυσίδα είναι απαραίτητη. οποίες αντιμετώπισε με επιτυχία. Για μία ολοκληρωμένη πράσινη μετάβαση της ναυτιλίας χρειάζεται επίσης και δυνατή χρηματοδότηση από τις τράπεζες καθώς τα τελευταία 15 χρόνια η ναυτιλιακή χρηματοδότηση βαίνει διαρκώς μειούμενη. Οι στόχοι για το 2050 είναι φιλόδοξοι αλλά χρειάζεται συνεργασία και καλή εφαρμογή του πλάνου. Ο Γενικός Γραμματέας της ECSA (European Community Shipowners’ Associations) Σωτήρης Ράπτης τόνισε μεταξύ άλλων πως η ναυτιλία αποτελεί ακρογωνιαίο λίθο της Ευρωπαϊκής οικογένειας. Η ναυτιλία θα συμβάλει στους κλιματικούς στόχους που έχει θέσει η Ευρώπη. Πολλές είναι οι δυσκολίες που έχουν συσσωρευτεί όπως η πανδημία, η εισβολή στην Ουκρανία αλλά και οι φιλόδοξοι στόχοι

που έχουν τεθεί για το κλίμα και τη ναυτιλία. Θα πρέπει να αποδώσουμε στη ναυτιλία την σημασία που της πρέπει για την ασφάλεια στην Ευρώπη και να προχωρήσουμε προς έναν πλανήτη χωρίς εκπομπές διοξειδίου και να είμαστε απαλαγμένοι από τον άνθρακα έως το 2050. Πρέπει να επισπεύσουμε τις διαδικασίες προκειμένου από τον σχεδιασμό να προχωρήσουμε στην εφαρμογή.

Φαίνεται πως η Ευρώπη έχει αρχίσει να ξεχνά την σημασία

και την συνεισφορά της ναυτιλίας και καλό θα κάνει να

θυμηθεί ξανά τα πολλαπλά οφέλη που προκύπτουν από μία

βιομηχανία που κατέχει το 40% του παγκόσμιου στόλου. Η

συνεργασία μόνο δεν αρκεί. Χρειάζεται να ξεκλειδώσουν τα

γραφειοκρατικά κανάλια της Ευρώπης και να ανοίξουν οι

κάνουλες για χρηματοδότηση προκειμένου η προστιθέμενη

αξία που θα προκύψει να παραμείνει Ευρωπαϊκό κεκτημένο.

European Shipping Summit Ναυτιλία, το ανταγωνιστικό πλεονέκτημα

της Ευρώπης

Η δεύτερη ημέρα του European Shipping Summit που πραγματοποιήθηκε στις Βρυξέλλες ενδυνάμωσε ακόμα πιο πολύ τον στρατηγικό ρόλο της Ευρωπαϊκής Ναυτιλίας.

Για ακόμα μία φορά ο Φίλιππος Φιλής, Πρόεδρος της Ένωσης Ευρωπαίων Εφοπλιστών (ECSA) μίλησε για τις μεγάλες οι προκλήσεις που δέχεται η Ευρωπαϊκή ναυτιλία.

Η Βιομηχανία θα πρέπει να παραμείνει ανταγωνιστική και η στρατηγική σημασία της ναυτιλίας να είναι αδιαπραγμάτευτη. Η Ευρωπαϊκή ναυτιλία αποτελεί πυλώνα ασφάλειας για την Ευρώπη και για την διασφάλιση της εφοδιαστικής αλυσίδας. Η Ευρωπαϊκή ναυτιλία αποτελεί το 40% του παγκόσμιου στόλου και διακινεί το 76% του ευρωπαϊκού εμπορίου. Οι πλοιοκτήτες συμφωνούν να πληρώσουν αυτό που τους αναλογεί για το Fit for 55 την ίδια ώρα που οι υπάρχοντες κανόνες δημιουργούν κλίμα αβεβαιότητας.

O Jose Manuel Barroso, Former President European Commission, τόνισε πως η Ευρώπη δεν γνωρίζει την σπουδαιότητα της ναυτιλίας του 40%. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ναυτιλία έχει εξέχοντα ρόλο στην διατήριση της εφοδιαστικής αλυσίδας και της ασφάλειας στην Ευρώπη. Ο ανταγωνισμός θα εξακολουθήσει να είναι μεγάλος. Η

Κίνα θα συνεχίσει να είναι μία πολύ ισχυρή οικονομία στο μέλλον.

Είμαστε στην αρχή της πράσινη μετάβασης και χρειαζόμαστε

σοβαρή χρηματοδότηση για αυτό τόνισε ο κ. Barroso.

Πρέπει να επενδύσουμε στην εκπαίδευση των ανθρώπινων πόρων καθώς η Ευρώπη έχει ανάγκη από μία ισχυρή Ευρωπαϊκή ναυτιλία.

Η ναυτιλία δεν πρέπει να θεωρείται δεδομένη. Η ναυτιλία είναι αποτελεσματική και δεν υπάρχει εναλλακτική. Τεράστιες οι προκλήσεις για τον κλάδο. Είμαστε σε πολύ πλεονεκτική θέση για να θέσουμε standards υποστήριξε από την πλευρά του ο Aaron Farrugia, Minister for Transport, Malta.

Το προφίλ της ναυτιλίας ανεβαίνει. Ευημερία και ασφάλεια είναι τα κλειδιά για την αναβάθμιση του κλάδου υποστήριξε ο κ. Δημήτρης Φαφαλιός, Γενικός Γραμματέας της Ένωσης Ελλήνων Εφοπλιστών και Πρόεδρος της Intercargo Η Ναυτιλία βρίσκει λύσεις πολύ πιο γρήγορα από κυβερνήσεις και στρατό. Οι νομοθέτες θα πρέπει γνωρίζουν ότι όποτε συμβαίνει ένα πρόβλημα στον πλανήτη η ναυτιλία είναι εκεί να το επιλύσει. Χρειάζεται προσπάθεια και από τις δύο πλευρές. Οι νομοθέτες πρέπει να δουν άλλες μεγάλες δημοκρατίες της Ασίας πως αντιμετωπίζουν την ναυτιλία. Και πως η ναυτιλία ενσωματώνεται πλήρως σε όλες τις πτυχές του κράτους Πρέπει να δουλέψουμε για την αναγνώριση της ναυτιλίας στην Ευρώπη. Επίσης χρειάζεται μεγάλη συνεργασία με τους νομοθέτες ώστε να καταλάβουν τι είναι η ναυτιλία. Χρειαζόμαστε καλύτερους κανόνες που να κρατούν τη ναυτιλία ανταγωνιστική τόνισε ο κ.

Από την πλευρά του ο Βασίλης Κρουστάλης, Senior Vice President, Global Business Development του ABS ο οποίος ήταν ο Platinum Sponsor του European Shipping Summit τόνισε

πως το συνέδριο αυτό συνδέει την ναυτιλία με τις ρυθμιστικές αρχές καθώς η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση είναι ηγέτιδα δύναμη όσον

αφορά τους κανονισμούς στα emissions. Έτσι μπορούμε καλύτερα να δουλέψουμε μαζί και να μιλάμε για πραγματική συνεργασία.

Και με αυτό το συνέδριο γίνεται μία σοβαρή προσέγγιση για κάτι πιο ουσιαστικό. Ο ABS στηρίζει αυτή την πρωτοβουλία

καθώς η Ευρώπη είναι ηγέτιδα δύναμη στην πορεία μας για την απανθρακοποιηση και επίσης αποτελεί το μεγαλύτερο κομμάτι της

πίτας των πελατών μας. Είμαστε λοιπόν διακρώς έμπρακτα κοντά στους πελάτες μας, κατέληξε ο κ. Κρουστάλης.

O Σπύρος Ζολώτας, Marine Southern Europe, Middle East & Africa Area Senior Director, RINA (Silver Spronson στο European Shipping Summit) τόνισε την σημασία του European Shipping Summit. Η Ευρώπη βρίσκεται σε ένα σταυροδρόμι περιβαλλοντικών κανονισμών που βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη και όλοι περιμένουμε να δούμε την εφαρμογή τους. Το να βρίσκονται όλα τα εμπλεκόμενα μέρη, πολιτικοί, οργανώσεις, θεσμικοί, providers υπηρεσιών και πλοιοκτήτες μαζί και να συζητούν, αποτελεί θετική και σοβαρή

εξέλιξη. Οι προκλήσεις είναι πολλές και η Ευρώπη πρέπει να έχει μέλλον έναντι άλλων Ηπείρων που λειτουργούν ανταγωνιστικά.

Χρειάζεται μεγάλη προσοχή στο τι κανονισμοί θα επιλεγούν

προκειμένου στο όνομα της πράσινης μετάβασης να σταματήσει η

Ευρώπη να πληρώνει υπέρογκους φόρους. Και αυτό θα επιτευχθεί όταν οι πολιτικοί αποφασίσουν να νομοθετήσουν λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν τον τρόπο λειτουργίας της Ευρωπαϊκής Ναυτιλίας.

Παρούσα στο συνέδριο και η Πρόεδρος της WISTA International Έλπη Πετράκη η οποία τόνισε την πολυφωνία του European Shipping Summit και την ανάγκη για διαφορετικότητα. Οι άνθρωποι που δημιουργούν τους κανονισμούς είχαν σήμερα την ευκαιρία να ακούσουν τους ανθρώπους της ναυτιλίας. Παρά τις διαφορετικές πολιτικές των κρατών, η κεντρική ιδέα είναι ίδια. Τα χρήματα από την φορολογία της ναυτιλίας θα πρέπει να επιστρέφουν πίσω στον κλάδο με οποιαδήποτε μορφή θα βοηθήσει στην πράσινη μετάβαση. Η διαφορετικότητα είναι πολύ ψηλά στην ατζέντα της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, γεγονός που θα βοηθήσει πολύ στην διαμόρφωση ποικιλόμορφων συζητήσεων που θα οδηγήσουν στις προσδοκούμενες αποφασεις και στην διατήρηση μιας δυνατής Ευρωπαϊκής Ναυτιλίας.

Στην ομιλία του ο Chairman του International Chamber of Shipping Emanuele Grimaldi τόνισε την ανάγκη για την απρόσκοπτη συνέχιση της εφοδιαστικής αλυσίδας παρά τα όποια προβλήματα. Τα πλοία όμως για να επιτευχθεί κάτι τέτοιο θα πρέπει να μπορούν να κυκλοφορούν ελεύθερα από λιμάνι σε λιμάνι.

Ακοιμα και η πυρηνική ενέργεια θα πρέπει να αποτελέσει εναλλακτική πρόταση για τα καύσιμα του μέλλοντος. Προτεραιότητα και στους ναυτικούς. Χωρίς αυτούς δεν υπάρχει ναυτιλία.Χρειάζεται συνεργασία από όλες τις πλευρές κατέληξε ο κ. Grimaldi.

Η αβεβαιότητα δεν μπορεί να επιφέρει και άλλη καθυστέρη

Η ναυτιλία πρέπει να βελτιώσει τις προβλέψεις της.

Το Lloyd’s Register και το Lloyd’s Register Foundation κάνουν

έκκληση στους πλοιοκτήτες και όλους τους φορείς της εφοδιαστικής

αλυσίδας να ενισχύσουν τις προσπάθειες αντιμετώπισης των

σημαντικών αλλαγών και επερχόμενων πιθανών μελλοντικών

σεναρίων – όπως αυτά αναπτύσσονται στη νέα έκθεση που

δημοσιεύθηκε πρόσφατασ στα πλαίσια εορτασμού της Ναυτιλιακής Εβδομάδας του Λονδίνου (London International Shipping Week).

Σύμφωνα με τη νέα έκθεση, μεγάλης κλίμακας μελλοντικές

αλλαγές αφορούν σε κύρια λιμάνια να τίθενται σε αχρηστία λόγω

της κλιματικής αλλαγής, άνοδο του ποσοστού της γυναικείας απασχόλησης στον κλάδο και την κυριαρχία των αφρικανικών

κρατών στη διοχέτευση ναυτικού ανθρώπινου δυναμικού.

Η ναυτιλία πρέπει να βελτιώσει τις προβλέψεις της ώστε να προετοιμαστεί για κάθε πιθανό σενάριο στο μέλλον, αναφέρει ο κορυφαίος νηογνώμονας.

Η έκθεση “Global Maritime Trends 2050”, που συντάχθηκε από το Economist Impact, αποτελεί μέρος του νέου πολυετούς προγράμματος του Lloyd’s Register και του Lloyd’s Register Foundation, που εστιάζεται στις παγκόσμιες τάσεις της ναυτιλίας. Κάποια από τα μεγαλύτερα λιμάνια στον κόσμο θα τεθούν σε αχρηστία λόγω της αυξημένης στάθμης της θάλασσας.

Η Διακυβερνητική Επιτροπή για την Κλιματική Αλλαγή (IPCC) εκτιμά ότι η στάθμη της θάλασσας αναμένεται να αυξηθεί από 0,29μ σε 0,51μ μέχρι το 2100, κατά το σενάριο διατήρησης της υφιστάμενης κατάστασης.

Η νέα έκθεση παρουσιάζει ότι σε περίπτωση αύξησης της στάθμης κατά 40εκ μέχρι το 2050, τα λιμάνια του Χιούστον (ΗΠΑ), της

Σανγκάης (Κίνα) και του Λαζάρο Καρντένας (Μεξικό) δεν θα είναι σε θέση να λειτουργήσουν.

Τα αφρικανικά κράτη κυρίαρχοι πάροχοι του ναυτικού ανθρωπίνου δυναμικού.

Σύμφωνα με το ΔΝΤ, ως το 2050 οι Αφρικανοί θα έχουν τη νεότερη μέση ηλικία στον κόσμο, μόλις 25 ετών. Καθώς άλλες περιοχές απειλούνται από πληθυσμιακή γήρανση, η Αφρική θα πάει ενάντια στο ρεύμα. Για κλάδους όπως η ναυτιλία, αυτό σημαίνει ότι η στελέχωση των ναυτικών και πληρωμάτων όλο και περισσότερο θα πηγάζει από αφρικανικές χώρες, ενδεχομένως αντικαθιστώντας τις παραδοσιακές «μήτρες» της Ασίας.

Η γυναικεία απασχόληση στη ναυτιλία θα φτάσει το 25% του ναυτικού εργατικού δυναμικού παγκοσμίως ως το 2050, λόγω της

τεχνολογικής προόδου.

Το 2021, οι γυναίκες αντιπροσώπευαν λιγότερο από το 2% του παγκόσμιου εργατικού δυναμικού στη ναυτιλία, σύμφωνα με την τελευταία έκθεση της BIMCO και του Διεθνούς Επιμελητηρίου Ναυτιλίας (ICS).

Αλλά μια ενεργειακή μετάβαση καθοδηγούμενη από την τεχνολογία θα μπορούσε να επιφέρει ταχεία αύξηση της γυναικείας απασχόλησης μέχρι τα μέσα του αιώνα.

Ως το 2050, η ανάγκη για τεχνολογικά καταρτισμένα ναυτιλιακά στελέχη θα μπορούσε να επιτρέψει σε περισσότερες γυναίκες να αναλάβουν διοικητικές θέσεις στη στεριά ή στη θάλασσα, καθώς ολοένα και πιο αυτόνομα πλοία και συστήματα απαιτούν επίβλεψη και παρακολούθηση παρά εντατική χειρωνακτική εργασία.

Η νέα έκθεση “Global Maritime Trends 2050” αναλύει πιθανά μελλοντικά σενάρια για τη ναυτιλία το 2050, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη την ταχύτητα υιοθέτησης των νέων τεχνολογιών και το βαθμό παγκόσμιας συνεργασίας, αποσκοπώντας να διευκολύνει τον κλάδο στις προβλέψεις του ως προς μελλοντικούς κινδύνους, ευκαιρίες και απαιτούμενες επενδύσεις.

Τα σημαντικότερα ευρήματα παρουσιάστηκαν σήμερα σε εκδήλωση στο Λονδίνο, στα πλαίσια εορτασμού της Ναυτιλιακής Εβδομάδας του Λονδίνου.

Ο Nick Brown, CEO του Lloyd’s Register τόνισε ότι η έκθεση και το ευρύτερο πρόγραμμα που συμβάλλει στη συγκριτική αξιολόγηση των ευρημάτων, αποτελούν εξαιρετική ευκαιρία για ανάληψη δράσης και προετοιμασία για αλλαγή. Συγκεκριμένα δήλωσε: «Άλλοι κλάδοι είναι πολύ καλύτεροι στις προβλέψεις τους, όπως για παράδειγμα ο χρηματοπιστωτικός τομέας, ο οποίος κατανοεί εις βάθος τις πιθανές μελλοντικές εξελίξεις και πώς μπορεί να ανταπεξέλθει σε αυτές. Η ναυτιλία φαίνεται να υστερεί.

Από τη διαχείριση της ενεργειακής μετάβασης μέχρι την προετοιμασία της επόμενης γενιάς των ναυτικών, επιτρέψαμε στην αβεβαιότητα να καθυστερήσει τη δράση για πολύ καιρό. Τώρα δημιουργήσαμε ένα πλαίσιο ώστε η ναυτιλία να σχηματίσει καλύτερη εικόνα για αυτά που θα επιφέρει το μέλλον. Είναι καιρός να αναλάβουμε δράση».

Η Ruth Boumphrey, CEO του Lloyd’s Register Foundation, προσθέτει: «Η ναυτιλία είναι βαθιά συνυφασμένη με γεωπολιτικές και μακροοικονομικές προκλήσεις. Τα πλοία μεταφέρουν το 80% των εμπορευμάτων παγκοσμίως, συνεπώς όποιες διαταραχές γίνονται αισθητές σε όλο τον κόσμο. Εν μέσω αβεβαιότητας της παγκόσμιας εφοδιαστικής αλυσίδας, της άμεσης ανάγκης για απανθρακοποίηση, της ενσωμάτωσης των νέων τεχνολογιών, των ανησυχιών για τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα και την ασφάλεια στη θάλασσα καθώς και του μέλλοντος του ναυτικού επαγγέλματος, αποτελεί ζωτικής σημασίας όσοι εργάζονται στη ναυτιλιακή βιομηχανία να κάνουν ό,τι περνάει από το χέρι τους για να προβλέψουν, μετριάσουν και ανταποκριθούν στις προκλήσεις αυτές, χωρίς να προκληθεί ζημία αλλού».

Το ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα Global Maritime Trends 2050 θα περιλάβει μια σειρά εις βάθος αναλύσεων που θα αναθέσει το Lloyd’s Register και το Lloyd’s Register Foundation σε εξειδικευμένους οργανισμούς και φορείς οι οποίοι θα εξετάσουν τι χρειάζεται για την ανάπτυξη ενός ασφαλούς και βιώσιμου θαλάσσιου τομέα, εν όψει των γεωπολιτικών, μακροικονομικών, τεχνολογικών και άλλων κοινωνικών αλλαγών.

Πάντοτε πίστευα και πιστεύω ότι η θάλασσα για την Ελλάδα είναι ο τόπος και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο αντιμετωπίζει τα προβλήματα της, διευρύνει την επιρροή της, και ενισχύει την παγκόσμια παρουσία της και την εθνική της οικονομία. Καλώς ήρθες και καλή επιτυχία στο έργο σου».

Παραλαμβάνων Υ.ΝΑ.Ν.Π. κ. Χρήστος Στυλιανίδης:

«Με τον Μιλτιάδη Βαρβιτσιώτη γνωριζόμαστε χρόνια, είχαμε δουλέψει και ως βουλευτές, εγώ εκ μέρους του Κυπριακού

Κοινοβουλίου, εκείνος του Ελληνικού Κοινοβουλίου, σε δύσκολες αποστολές στον ΟΑΣΕ, στη Μεσόγειο.

Να τον ευχαριστήσω για την υποδοχή που μου έκανε, θα συμφωνήσω με τα περισσότερα που είπε και θα επισημάνω ότι είμαστε όλοι περήφανοι για το Λιμενικό μας Σώμα. Θυμάμαι ως Επίτροπος στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, σε πάρα πολλές περιπτώσεις, άκουγα τα εξαιρετικά ευγενή σχόλια όλων όσων συνεργαζόντουσαν με το Λιμενικό Σώμα της Ελλάδας και ειλικρινά ένιωθα πάρα πολύ υπερήφανος.

Την ίδια στιγμή η ελληνική ναυτιλία είναι το μεγάλο μας όπλο, είναι όντως η δυνατότητά μας να είμαστε παντού στον κόσμο. Είναι μεγάλη δύναμη του ελληνισμού για να έχει επιρροές εκεί που κανείς δεν το πιστεύει. Το Υπουργείο είναι η εικόνα της Ελλάδος προς τα έξω εξαιτίας αυτής της μεγάλης δύναμης της ναυτιλίας. Είμαστε

χώρα νησιωτική με όμορφα νησιά και σας μιλάει ένας άνθρωπος

που έχει δει όλο τον κόσμο, ως Επίτροπος ανθρωπιστικής

βοήθειας, είναι τα πιο ωραία στον κόσμο και δεν αμφισβητούμε και δεν δεχόμαστε αμφισβήτηση. Θα πρέπει να τα κρατήσουμε, να βοηθήσουμε να επιβιώσουν και να τα ενισχύσουμε για να γίνουν ακόμη πιο δυνατά.

Η χώρα αυτή τη στιγμή περνάει δύσκολες στιγμές. Η κακοκαιρία «Daniel» ήταν ένα κατακλυσμιαίο γεγονός. Ένας φίλος μου Γερμανός μετεωρολόγος μου είπε ότι, ήταν σαν τον κατακλυσμό του Νώε, έτσι το χαρακτήρισε. Νομίζω ότι είναι ένα γεγονός που μας έχει συνταράξει και έχει δημιουργήσει τόσα πολλά προβλήματα. Όλοι μαζί, όλοι οι Έλληνες, ανεξαρτήτως κομματικής ή ιδεολογικής τοποθέτησης, πρέπει να δούμε πως θα δουλέψουμε έτσι ώστε η επόμενη μέρα να μας βρει και ενωμένους αλλά και αποτελεσματικούς. Τουλάχιστον εμείς εδώ οι τρεις, όσο μπορούμε στην πολιτική, θα βοηθήσουμε από αυτό το Υπουργείο αλλά και από όποια νέα θέση τάξει ο Πρωθυπουργός. Έτσι κι αλλιώς αυτός είναι ο τιμονιέρης και εμείς είμαστε έτοιμοι ως στρατιώτες, να βοηθήσουμε ο καθένας από το πόστο του. Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ».

Από την πλευρά του ο Υφυπουργός κ. Ιωάννης Παππάς ευχαρίστησε τον κ. Βαρβιτσιώτη για τη συνεργασία που είχαν τους τελευταίους δυόμιση μήνες, ενώ αναφέρθηκε στις επιτυχίες του Λιμενικού Σώματος και ειδικότερα τον απεγκλωβισμό 3.700 ανθρώπων κατά τη διάρκεια των πυρκαγιών στη Ρόδο, τη μεγαλύτερη εκκένωση που έχει γίνει στην Ευρώπη.

LR appoints Elina Papageorgiou as Vice President – Greece

Ongoing investments in Athens office reaffirm LR’s commitment to Greek owners, ensuring access to the right people, knowledge, and support.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has further enhanced its capabilities in Greece and deepened its commitment to Greek clients, with the appointment of several additional global experts to its Athens office.

Leading the charge is Elina Papageorgiou, LR’s Global Strategic Growth Director, who has been named LR’s Greece Vice President. In addition to leading our business in Greece, Elina manages a dedicated global strategic growth team spread across key maritime hubs. She has a wealth of global experience, having spent 20 years at LR and across the industry in a variety of roles in several different worldwide locations. Elina returns to Greece after leading LR’s UK & Ireland business.

As part of LR’s drive to deliver technical excellence across its global network, Theodosis Stamatellos will now become the Global Technical Client Care Director, a newly created role that will see him and his global team support clients with around the clock technical assistance and guidance.

The Liberian Registry estabishes new scholarship

The Liberian Registry establishes “The Yoram Cohen Memorial Scholarship” with the World Maritime University

In recognition of the profound maritime contributions of LISCR Founder and Chairman Emeritus Yoram Cohen, the Liberian Registry has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Maritime University (WMU), creating “The Yoram Cohen Memorial Scholarship.” This undertaking will promote wide-ranging research in maritime and ocean-related studies, focusing on areas such as safe decarbonization of international shipping, innovation and seafarer safety and well-being.

Thomas Klenum, Executive VP of Innovation & Regulatory Affairs at the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR), commented “Yoram Cohen had a lifelong love of the sea and devoted a significant part of his life to responsible environmental stewardship. We want to honor Yoram’s legacy by recognizing the outstanding achievements of the WMU and advancing our mutual interests in the field of maritime education, research, and seafaring affairs. It is our hope that this scholarship will build upon the work of the WMU with advanced graduate research to support innovation and help develop new and sustainable practices for the maritime industry.”

Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., President of WMU noted, “The World Maritime University is delighted to collaborate with the Liberian Registry in establishing “The Yoram Cohen Memorial Scholar-

Fondo Italiano d’Investimento to acquire a minority stake in RINA S.p.A.

Registro Italiano Navale, Fondo Italiano d’Investimento and RINA S.p.A have announced a new agreement aimed to allow the Italian fund to become a shareholder in RINA S.p.A., a multinational company based in Genoa, Italy.

The deal is expected to be completed in the autumn of 2023 and will involve an injection of up to 180 million euros in capital in the form of equity. After the deal’s completion, the ownership structure will see Registro Italiano Navale maintaining the majority stake, Fondo Italiano d’Investimento and other co-investors holding a minority stake of up to 33%, and the company’s management participating with a 2.5% stake.

Fondo Italiano d’Investimento SGR will operate through an innovative structure that includes investments from Fondo Italiano Consolidamento e Crescita (FICC), Fondo Italiano Consolidamento e Crescita 2 (FICC 2), and, for the first time, a group of leading co-investors coordinated by Fondo Italiano. This transaction marks the first investment made by FICC 2, the second edition of the fund dedicated to supporting the growth and consolidation of Italian companies, which on this occasion also carried out, just one month after its launch, a first closing for a total of 245 million euro with cornerstone investors CDP Equity, Fondazione ENPAM, Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit, and other leading investors.

The capital injected by Fondo Italiano into the multinational based in Genoa, RINA S.p.A., is aimed at providing additional support for the company’s growth, both organically and inorganically, as well as its international expansion. RINA S.p.A. has diversified significantly worldwide over the last twenty years, establishing itself as a brand in the fields of engineering consulting and Testing, Inspection & Certification (TIC).

In 2022, RINA S.p.A. reported pro-forma revenues of over 700 million euros, and it is on track to achieve growth objectives of nearly 800 million euros in 2023.

The Chairman and CEO of RINA S.p.A., Ugo Salerno, commented:

“We have found the most suitable partner in Fondo Italiano d’Investimento to share our growth path and the realization of ambitious goals we have worldwide. It is a high-level institutional partner, Italian like us, with whom we will embark on a new phase for RINA and who will allow us to fully implement our strategic plan. To facilitate this agreement, RINA S.p.A. was advised by Lazard as the financial advisor, Banca Akros as the co-financial advisor, and PwC for financial Due Diligence and Studio Legale Gattai, Minoli, Partners as legal advisor.

On the other hand, Fondo Italiano d’Investimento was supported by BCG for business due diligence, Legance for legal due diligence, New Deal Advisors for financial due diligence, KPMG for tax due diligence, ERM for ESG due diligence, Marsh for insurance due diligence, and E&Y Parthenon for tech due diligence.

The completion of the transaction is subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announces Genoa, Italy, will be host to the 2024 European Summit and the new CLIA Innovation Expo. Both events will be part of a week of activities during 11-14 March 2024 focused on innovation, sustainability, and community.

In partnership with the Ligurian Region, Municipality of Genoa, the Ports of Genoa, and Chamber of Commerce of Genoa, top cruise line executives, industry innovators, and political leaders will gather to showcase the industry’s leading role in providing environmental and tourism management solutions.

The CLIA Innovation Expo is a new forum for companies currently supplying, or interested in supplying, the cruise industry, with a focus on maritime technology, and hospitality. The Expo will showcase solutions and products from across Europe, Italy, and in particular Liguria and the surrounding regions.

The CLIA Innovation Expo will include an innovation hub where technology developers and suppliers across various categories will introduce and discuss new products and solutions for the industry. A Taste of Cruise Pavilion will include a culinary demonstration area and connect hotel, food, and beverage suppliers with cruise line decisionmakers in procurement and operations to explore new offerings.

The European Summit will build on the successful Summit in Genoa 2022 and Paris 2023, which brought together institutional representatives and stakeholders from across the supply chain to debate key policy issues and developments.
