Jan 2 – A law suit challenges the annexation of Fieldcrest and Columbia Gardens. This brings the total number of lawsuits against annexation to three, the first being Graymere Manors subdivision.

Jan 6 – 7 inches of snow shuts down Maury County schools.

Jan 16 – A letter from the US Army to Mr. George Nicholson Harmon said the body his son, a Columbia Army Air Corps corporal, declared missing in 1944 during WWII was found in New Guinea. No details given. The family lived on a farm on Bear Creek pike at that time.

Jan 18 – Maury County picks first negro juror, Flynoid “Buddy” Young, a brick mason who lived on Bridge street was seated on Ernest Rieves liquor trial, found not guilty.

Jan 21 – The Tennessee Historical Society placed a marker at the former Branham & Hughes school, now the Tennessee Orphan Home.

Feb 11 – The Baker Elementary school construction contract was awarded to General Builders Corp of Nashville to construct a one story, 18 teacher school for $368,000.

Feb 15 – 6 to 8 inches of ice and snow closes schools and businesses in Maury county for 9 days.

Feb 19 – Columbia re-annexes the three subdivisions again because lawsuit alleging improper process followed.

Feb 26 – Jersey Pride Milk Company introduces new carton milk containers in Maury county for first time.

Feb 27 – A Chicago firm, Stakton company announces it will manufacture children's clothing in the former Wargosa building and hire 150 workers. (Columbia Tog company)

March 3 – Maury County retail sales at $34 million for 1959.

March 4 – Maury County votes to legalize liquor sales by 11 vote margin, 3570 to 3559 in referendum vote.

March 7 – Daily Herald average circulation is 10,164.

March 10 – Hooker Corp approves $6.4 million addition for new furnace.

March 11 – Additional 2 inches snow closes Maury County schools for 11th day, the “Snow Sixties” continues to shatter records.

March 18 – Columbia Mayor Tom McGrew, announced plans for 74 white and 66 Negro low income housing units, cost $2 million. April 5 – US Weather Bureau announced that March was coldest in 100 years in Maury County history, said Tom Fleming, weather observer at Ashwood with a mean temperature of 37.2 degrees compared to previous record in 1915 of 40 degrees.

Jan – White property owners in Fayette and Haywood Counties evicted hundreds of black tenant farmers for registering to vote. Blacks formed a “Tent city” with food shipped in to feed people.

Jan 22 – 417 miners buried alive in Jonesburg Tn. coal mine cave-in.

Feb – McKee Food Corp introduced the “Little Debbie” snack cake in Collegedale, Tn.

Feb 13 – Nashville African-American students launch first full scale “Sit-ins” at Kress, Woolworth’s and McCellan’s Department stores at arcade on 5th ave. Sit-ins continued into summer with students suffering verbal, physical abuse and arrests by Nashville Christian Leadership conference (NCLC).

Feb 15 – Black college students from Knoxville stage “Sitins” in Knoxville.

Feb 16 – The Highlander school charter revoked for alleged violation of state segregation and beer laws at Monteagle, Tn., appeal filed.

Feb 25 – Fire hoses used to route 2000 whites in Chattanooga, Tn. Enraged by Negro lunch counter “Sit-ins.”

March 3 – Vanderbilt University expels James E Lawson from Divinity school for leading Nashville lunch counter Sit-ins and organizing the student nonviolent coordinating Committee (SNCC). He would later lead sanitation strike in Memphis that resulted in the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

March 3 – 63 Negro’s arrested for participating in lunch counter Sit-in demonstration in Nashville, 77 arrested on March 2.

March 7 – Mr. Harry Zimmerman and wife Mary founded Service Merchandize store in Nashville, tn.

March 5 – Elvis Presley discharged from Army after 2 years service.

March 8 – The American Biltrite Rubber company announced it will build a new fire hose plant in Hohenwald, employ 400 to 500.

March 11 – Gov. Buford Ellington declares his concern over adverse publicity given to Tennessee Horse Breeding association involving cruelty to Tennessee Walking horses. 529

April 8 – Columbia Alderman voted to fluoridation of city water.

April 11 – Maury County Quarterly Court convened for first time in remodeled Circuit Court house.

April 11 – Maury County Quarterly Court approves $4 million school budget for 1961-62, actual operating budget is $2 million, remaining money for construction of new schools.

April 12 – Dr. William C Dunn, a native of Maury County and Nashville surgeon was chosen “Tennessee’s Outstanding Physician of the Year” at the 125 state medical convention.

April 12 – Kroger Corp announces plans for a new Kroger store with a 300 car parking lot located on the old Columbia Institute property on West 7th street.

April 15 – Two unidentified Negro women stage what was Columbia’s first Lunch counter “Sit-in” demonstration at F.W. Woolworth's on 7th Street, store manager, Fred Heathcock, closed the lunch counter, no arrests made.

April 18 Miss Suzie Morton 18, crowned Miss Maury County. She is daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alton Morton of Spring Hill and she will reign over the Tennessee National Walking Horse Jubilee sponsored by the Jaycee’s.

April 27 – Columbia wins annexation law suit in state court.

April 28 – The old Court house items auctioned for a total of $900. Twenty 18 foot benches went to Cedar Hill Church of Christ for $5 each, jury chairs sold for $2 each. The highest bid was for the marble used as paneling around the court house wall, the brass grills went for $52 each.

May 2 – Gov. Buford Ellington announced he authorized $75,000 to build a dining hall at the Middle Tennessee 4-H club camp in Columbia.

May 4 – Four liquor stores to open in Maury County, including Sol Davis and Howard Neely’s stores in Mt Pleasant, Jimmy Gaines and one other in Columbia.

May 12 – “Mr. America” magazine featured a Maury County man, Albert F Warner 35, a manager at the Wargosa Manufacturing plant and father of two who began body building two years ago and has lost 35 pounds.

June 10 – Columbia City Council approves $975,000 budget.

June 22 – The US Weather Bureau honored Mr. Thomas S Fleming with a citation for his work as an official weather observer at Ashwood. Unofficial Ashwood Climatological Sub-Station records began in 1856 by Mr. C.F. Williams. The station became an official weather station in 1883. Mr. Fleming has served since 1939.

Aug 1 – Maury County retail sales reported at record $30 million for 1959. Old record was $24.4 million in 1958, total Maury County income was $60.1 million.

April 1 – The UAW files a 2nd petition to represent the 1800 employees of Murray-Ohio Manufacturing plant in Lawrenceburg, Tn.

April 7 – UAW loses Murray-Ohio representation election in Lawrenceburg, Tn. , 1001 to 657.

April 19 – A bomb blasts the home of Nashville Negro councilman and attorney, Z Alexander Looby. The attorney is the defense council for the Sit-in students in Nashville. He and his wife were asleep in the back of the house when the blast occurred, no injuries.

Aug 11 – Maury County School Board approved plans for new Columbia Central High School, new Baker Elementary School completed.

Aug 17 – The Columbia Housing authority purchased two tracts of land with a total of 32 acres on the old Phil Dyer farm for $35,000. Later the remaining 136 acres of the farm sold to the royal Order of Moose, Lodge #587 for $16,000.

Aug 31 – The Department of Labor report says $21 million out of $38 million in Maury County wages and salaries comes from manufacturing jobs.

Sept 6 – Miss Lillie Jackson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Rufus Jackson of Mt Pleasant, selected as the Fairest of the Fair beauty queen for Maury County Fair.

Sept 7 – US Department of Agriculture reports Maury County net farmer income at $6.5 million in 1959.

Sept 10 – Columbia City Council approves right of way route through Columbia on 4 lane Garden street state project affecting 148 parcels of land.

Sept 15 – The new S & H Green stamp redemption store center opened in the West End Shopping Center. Mrs. Freda Jenkins is manager of the store.

Sept 16 – Columbia’s $1.8 million housing approved for 66 white and 74 Negro units to be erected off Pulaski pike, all duplexes.

Sept 19 – New 18,000 sq foot Kroger store on old Columbia Institute property dedicated.

Sept 26 – 2500 attended the 3rd annual “Pony show” sponsored by the Maury County Horseman Association.

Sept 30 – TKM (Tennessee Knitting Mill) will donate its ball park facilities to the Columbia little league, says plant manager, Frank Cover. The new Highway 31 Garden street connection will cross the field.

Oct 17 – Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mr. Sam Rayburn spoke on behalf of Presidential candidate, John F Kennedy at the Columbia Memorial Building to a huge crowd of over 5000.

Nov 9 – Columbia announces plans to annex 8 more areas, including Santa Fe pike, Riverview Heights, Royal Oaks, Morning Side, Hardie Acres, Peony Park, Park Circle and Jackson Heights.

Aug 25 – Wilma Rudolph wins three gold medals in track , Ralph Boston both with Tennessee State University wins broad jump in 17th summer Olympics in Rome.

Sept 13 – 42 people, several from Maury County filed suit in Marshall County against the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders Association and asked the court to set aside the recent election of officers and nullify changes to the by-laws which were illegally changed according to the suit.

Oct 7 – Richard Nixon Republican candidate for President visits Nashville on political speech.

Nov 18 – Frank Adair, a native of Marshall County and horse trainer at Beech Grove for the last 12 years has leased Haynes Haven from Columbia Rock Products to train and raise Tennessee Walking horses.

Nov 26 – Olympic broad jump gold medal champion, Ralph Boston visited Carver-Smith school in Columbia and made a half time appearance at the championship game between Burt High of Clarksville and Carver-Smith. Burt High defeated the Yellow Jackets 32-8 at Fairview park for Middle Tennessee championship. Caldwell Wells was quarterback for Yellow jackets.

Dec 1 – The Wilson-Quick Drug store has grand opening in Columbia Shopping Center, Joe H Delk, manager.

Dec 5 – 10,000 watch Columbia Yule parade.

Dec 10 – Mr. & Mrs. Robert K Witherspoon, natives of Maury County purchased the old Cheairs place (Rippavilla) and 48 acres near Spring Hill.

Dec 12 – Dec 12 – 5000 people visit the new Maury County hospital expansion wing dedication.

Dec 12 – The Humble Oil Company purchased a 90 foot square lot on the old Columbia institute property for a Service station site, cost $44,750.

Dec 13 – Fire destroyed the Oakes Furniture plant, $100,000 loss. It is 4th major fire suffered by the company since 1885.

Dec 14 – The Columbia Planning Commission approved a 272 lot subdivision between Highway 31 and Theta Pike to be called Chantay Acres. It is being developed by Charles and Austin Brewer who had purchased the 158 acre Eldridge Denham property.

Dec 27 – Fire destroyed the 112 year old Williamsport Walker-Porter building, owned by John Matlock built in 1848.

Dec 28 – Twin babies born at Maury County hospital. Dennis Ray and sister Debra Ray born to Mr. & Mrs. Calvin Powers of Route 7.

Dec 29 – State approves 6 of 7 liquor permits for 31 package liquor stores in county. Approved was Floyd’s Package Liquor, West End Package, City Package, Sol’s Liquor and B & H Liquor in Mt Pleasant.

Nov 15 – Tennessee population listed as 3.5 million, Maury County at 41,699.

Nov 19 – The University of Tennessee Board of Trustee’s adopted a policy which would allow “qualified negros” to enter as students.

Dec 30 – US Federal Court halts 300 evictions of blacks who registered to vote in Haywood county, Tn. 532

Jan 17 – Patrice Lumumba , 1st Premier of the Republic of Congo assassinated after 67 days in office, President Eisenhower believed to have approved the assassination with assistance of Joseph Mobutu.

March 15 – South Africa withdraws from British Commonwealth.

Jan 20 – John F Kennedy inaugurated a 43rd president of US, makes “ask not” speech, declares “New Frontier.”

March 23 – 14 battalions of North Viet Nam communist troop invade Laos.

April 12 – Major Yuri Gagarin 27, Russian Cosmonaut becomes first man into space.

April 14 – Adolf Eichmann, Nazi death camp administrator trial begins in Jerusalem for killing 6 million Jews.

Feb 15 – 73 people, including 18 US figure skaters killed in 707 airplane crash in Belgium. Entire US team enroute to Prague, Czechoslovakia foe world figure skating championship cup.

March 1 – President Kennedy Est. “Peace Corps.”

March 21 – President Kennedy announced he will increase military aid to south Viet Nam.

April 17 – 1500 anti-Castro troops invade Cuba, Fidel Castro declares state of emergency, Castro captures 1172 within 72 hours.

March 29 – 23rd amendment to US constitution ratified, allows citizens of Washington DC to vote in Presidential election and have a representative in congress.

Jan 3 - Mr. & Mrs. Harry Cook, donate 2.5 acres on Mt Pleasant pike to Garden Presbyterian Church for new church site, present church at West 8th & Garden sold.

Jan 4 – Oakes Chair Company files for bankruptcy.

Jan 5 – Historic James K Polk home razed. The home once had President Andrew Jackson and President Martin Van Buren as guest over night on West 7th street. The home was purchased by Marshal Ledbetter and sold to Oakes and Nichols funeral home to be used as a parking lot.

Jan 6 – Baker Elementary school dedicated to honor J Rufus Baker, Maury County superintendent for 33 years.

Jan 9 – Maury County Court approves $80,000 for new Carpenter road bridge over Duck River.

Jan 9 – Mr. Andrew J Armstrong 98, one of the original founders of the ”Maury County Colored hospital” died. Mr. Armstrong was a school teacher, businessman, civic leader of the “colored community” and a member of the Mt Lebanon Missionary Baptist church in Columbia

Jan 10 – 30.5 inches of snow fell on Maury County in 1960 reports Mr. Thomas Fleming, weather observer at Ashwood. 9 inches fell in January, 12 inches in Feb. and 9.5 inches fell in March, total rainfall was 52 inches.

Jan 11 – Columbia population reported at 21,432.

Jan 13 – The Dixon farm and residence on 243 acres on Zion road has been purchased by Mrs. Leroy Epps of Kingstree, South Carolina. The site is one of the original Zion settlers. The historic home was built by slaves of Sam Armstrong and conveyed to Emily Dixon in 1879.

Jan 27 – New Williams Funeral Home on Mt Pleasant Pike has open house. First Williams Funeral home was on West 7th and School streets in 1930, former Eugene Anderson home. They moved to West 7th and Dunnington streets in 1952. Mt Pleasant pike site was part of former Joe Cheatham property.

Jan 28 – Miss Lillie Jackson 19, of Mt Pleasant chosen Tennessee State “Fairest of the Fair” out of 39 beauty contestants. She is daughter of Mr. Mrs. Rufus Jackson.

Feb 3 – First Farmers & Merchants bank purchased the Garden street Presbyterian church for $75,000.

Feb 3 – Fire destroyed the Negro American Legion Post and Charles Childress residence on East 7th street, formally the old Negro hospital.

Feb 24 – Health Department reports only 2411 homes out of 4661 on Columbia sewer line

Jan – Theotis Robinson Jr. becomes first African-American to enter University of Tennessee and later became 1st black elected to Knoxville city council in 50 years in 1969.

March – British Entrepreneur, Larry Carrier builds .5333 mile, 22 degree bank auto race track in Bristol, Tn. seats 20,000.

March 6 – Country Music Hall of Fame Est. in Nashville.

March 10 – State Supreme Court affirms Circuit Court decision on Columbia annexation.

March 16 – The Tennessee Conservationist magazine of the Tn. Department of Conservation, Fish & Game Commission published a special Civil War edition this month listing all Tennessee historical markers, 7 civil war markers showed in Maury County. 533

March 10 – US Department of Agriculture reports Maury County farms decreased from 3010 in 1954 to 2272 in 1960, average value $17,904. •

1961

April 21 – Tennessee State Highway Department announces plans for construction of 6.8 mile superhighway link along Highway 99, work on I-65 already underway in Giles County.

April 22 – Three Columbia High School students captured 1st place in state School mathematics contest sponsored by Tennessee Teacher association. 1st place winner’s were Algebra I- Patsy Legg; Algebra II – Tommy Primm: Plane Geometry – Steve Marfield, held at Martin College in Pulaski.

May 2 – Valley Enterprises Inc announced they will purchase 26 acres on old W.J Alexander farm on Campbellsville Pike and Alexander street to build Grace subdivision, houses to be priced above $10,000.

May 4 – Maury County School Board announces 82 percent of 358 Maury County teachers have degrees.

May 6 – Miss Mary Kinzer, teacher at Woodrow school is retiring after 51 years of teaching. She began teaching in 1910 after graduating from Howard Institute near Hampshire, paid $25 per month.

May 12 – First Baptist church construction begins on 7.5 acres on Mt Pleasant Pike.

June 12 – Governor Buford Ellington dedicated $100,000 4-H Club building.

June 15 – Columbia National Carbon Company plant contributes $9.9 million to economy and $5.5 million payroll in 1960 says Mr. C.J. Parks.

June 15 – Commander Bobby Williams and company break ground on new American Legion Herbert Griffin Post #19 on new Highway 31.

June 23 – The organizational meeting of Jonathan Webster Association was held at the Cross Bridges Methodist church. Judge Hugh Lee Webster, Chairman of the meeting called to order the descendents of the Maury County pioneer. Mrs. Hint Frierson 92, was the oldest member attending.

June 17 – Fowler Culberson of 1107 Morningside Drive in Western Park found a yellowed parchment in a garbage can here entitled “First United States Patent” dated July 31, 1790 and signed by George Washington. The paper is believed to be the first US patent and was issued to Samuel Hopkins of Philadelphia, Pa. for making Potash and Pearl Ash with a new process and apparatus.

June 24 – The Dixie Maid Grill at 607 N Garden street Sunday menu: southern fried chicken, choice roast beef, sliced Turkey, chipped or sliced bar-b-que, fresh green beans, scalloped potatoes, sliced tomatoes, baked peach cobbler, fresh corn on the cob, Broccoli, hot rolls, gravy, home made Blackberry cobbler, fruit / Sundae = $1 per plate.

June 27 – There are plans to enlarge Hunter Field, a private airport owned by W.A. Hunter Jr. on Green Mills road, plans to install lights and hangers and lengthen runway.

April – Berry Field Airport in Nashville expanded and modernized with 145,900 sq foot terminal with state of the art control tower.

April 5 – Tennessee state Supreme court ruled the closing of the Highland folk school in Monteagle for serving beer on premises was legal and charter remains revoked.

July 28 – A two room dogtrot log cabin is being erected in Maury County park, made of logs of three old log cabins donated by John R Skillington of Santa Fe pike and Monsanto Chemical to serve as museum.

Oct 11 – The Maury County Court House basement has been the checker players home for many years but now has come to an end after one aged player was injured in a scuffle. Judge David F Fleming ordered the checker game shut down after Mr. F.A . Connell was taken to hospital injured.

Oct 13 – For more than 40 years Mt Pleasant has been called “Mt Misery”. Last night thousands screamed and moaned at a mock funeral of “Mt Misery” as black robed mourner's escorted a antique hearse and coffin carrying the remains of “Mt Misery” out of town with torches and returned with lights singing “Happy days are here again” to a cheering crowd.

Oct 21 – Excavation for the new Hughes bridge across the Duck River north of Monsanto has unearthed the remains of the old wooded bridge and complete “Lock and Sluiceway” say engineer.” The sluiceway may have been for a waterwheel on the north side of the river.

Oct 25 – Maury County Hospital Trustees will deed a tract of land for Columbia police and fire station on Experimental Lane next to Bigby Creek and extend highway 43.

Nov 18 – Hal Wantland of Columbia Lions engineered the late game touchdown drive to win the 4th annual Rebel Bowl in Franklin and defeat Glencliff Colts 21-19 with 5000 watching.

Nov 22 – The Wayside Inn building on North Garden, home of the Columbia Business college was purchased by M.S. “Jack” Davis and J.T. Fisher and will provide expanded activities and room for Redman Davis insurance. The three story old Inn served many traveler's and was where General Nathan Bedford Forrest stabbed a young Lieut. Gould, after being wounded by his pistol ball. For the last 11 years it housed the Columbia Business College.

In addition, Miss Carrie Smith of the Athenaeum street found a 1878 DeBeers map of Maury County in her fathers papers, Mr. Frank Hardison Smith, long time Headmaster of the Athenaeum school. She also has a copy of a Maury county map drawn by him and used to place historical markers around Maury County.

Jan 5 – The old Cheairs Porter home burned on Bear Creek pike. The property was recently sold to Memphis development company who will construct a new subdivision on the property.

Jan 10 – A tornado hits Spring Hill, 3 people injured, destroyed or damaged were several buildings including Kinnard’s grocery, 1st Farmers & Merchants bank, the Maple Knoll motel and Wayside Inn were all damaged.

Jan 10 – One of the old Iron bridges in Maury County has been dismantled and the new “Howard bridge” over the Duck River will replace it. The old bridge was erected in 1913.

Jan 15 – The Ole Lamplighter finally gets a beer license after three attempts. Jimmy Matthews, owner of the Lamplighter appealed to the Beer board and protested their refusal to issue the license previously.

Jan 16 – Two local pastors who were expelled from the Emmanuel Church of Christ have lost their rights to use the church says Judge John Templeton. The Columbia church is headed by Mrs. Virginia Lester and Leslie Spann who contended they own the property since it was paid for without the assistance of the Nashville Church Corporation. Mrs. Nina Mary Pierce, Bishop of the Emmanuel Churches of Christ controls 39 churches and receives tithes from each church. Mrs. Lester and Mrs. Spann were excommunicated by Bishop Pierce for being “mean spirited.”

Jan 18 – Miss Judy Luna 17, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Luna of Columbia chosen Maury County’s “Fairest of the Fair.” Miss Luna attends Columbia Central High, is a cheer leader and plays basketball at the school.

Jan 18 – Columbia secures option on 256 acre Curtis Lentz farm for future Industrial park located near Belle Air and Idlewild subdivisions, cost $80,000.

Jan 19 – Mr. William Barnhart, Director of the Maury County Hospital asks the county to build a new wing for the hospital. He said the Federal govt. would contribute 52 percent of the cost. The wing would treat outpatients, chronically ill and convalesce patients.

Feb 14 – A new elevator for the Maury County Court house to be installed.

April 29 – The John Ashton home will be razed to make room for the new Highway 31 thoroughfare in Columbia. The Ashton house is one of the oldest in Columbia. The house has been owned by John Ashton for the past 70 years, owner of the Ashton Mills here. The house was originally built by James Akin, a early Maury County pioneer.

March 25 – The famous “Showplace restaurant and Motel” that inspired a murder razed. Brookwood was built by William S Anderson on 255 acre farm in 1948. In 1950 tourist cabins were added. In 1953, a commercial fisherman hooked a body in Kentucky lake that turned out to be William Anderson 41. Claude W Nichols wanted to buy Brookwood was later found guilty of murdering Anderson over the restaurant.

Jan 4 – The culmination of 6 years of work by Marise P Lightfoot and Evelyn B Shackleford of Mt Pleasant produced a 604 page book entitled “They Passed This Way” which contains information on 403 cemetery’s in Maury county.

Jan 11 – Hard work and cooperation has paid off for three Maury County brother’s. Joe, Allen and Clarence Ogilvie who started as share cropper’s and built their own farm of 648 acres with 120 head of cattle on Bear Creek pike 9 miles east. All three families share the returns from the land. They formed the cooperative in the 1930’s after saving $1000 to put down on 236 acres of eroded farm land and applied conservation practices to return the land to a productive condition with the help of the County agent, George A Newman who taught them good farming practices.

Jan 28 – Sam D Kennedy named Editor of Daily Herald and Maury Democrat. Mr. Kennedy is the son-in law of the late John W Finney and 1943 graduate of Hampshire High school. He received his law degree at Cumberland university, the son of Dr. Kennedy of Kettle Mills.

Feb 9 – Walter D. Hastings, former President and Publisher of the Daily Herald died,88. He had served 63 years in newspaper business. Became Editor & Publisher of Daily Herald in 1896. He wrote “Rambler” column & “Do You Remember” column.

Feb 11 – Clifford “Coo Coo” Marlin named top conservation farmer in Maury County by Board of Supervisor’s. “Coo Coo” and his wife with their son, Sterling, operate a 389 acre farm in the Carter’s Creek area.

Feb 24 – The Maury County Hospital Trustee’s accepted a 185 acre farm bequeathed to the hospital by the late Mr. Earl McCleaver Paxton on Campbellsville pike.

May 8 – The Maury County School Board adopted a desegregation plan for the entire Maury County school system, called “Freedom of Choice” plan. The plan calls for students and parents to choose the school they wish to attend.

May 10 – 17 of Columbia’s 56 sanitation workers strike for higher wages and better working conditions. A picket line was set up at City hall. Bobby Ray Gray, Randolph Kinzer, and Willie Renfro were acting as spokesman for the group. They say $1.20 per hour regardless of years of service is unfair.

May 29 – Maury County Court approves 1 percent sales tax.

Oct 22 – The Maury County Historical Society has acquired an engraving of the Duck River Bridge at Columbia drawn by H. Mosler in 1862 with General Buell’s Federal Army crossing the bridge. The historical society secured the picture in a Antique shop in South Carolina, later published in Harper’s Weekly. The bridge located at the foot of East 6th street.

Oct 25 – Mrs. Elizabeth Pillow Porter, Maury County’s oldest citizen died, 105 at her home on North High street. The house was built in 1812 by Nathan Vaught for Samuel Craig. Mrs. Porter was born in the house, an old two story 21 room original double cedar log cabin home. She was the niece of Dr. Robert Pillow and known as “Miss Lizzie.”

Nov 6 – Over $30,000 dollars in cash found in “Miss Lizzies” home, Mrs. Elizabeth Pillow Porter, 105. The articles of value will go to the Tennessee antiquity society according to her will. Antiques and other personal items will be auctioned off. She had no living relatives. All proceeds go to the charity’s of Maury County including the Library, King’s Daughter’s, Maury County hospital and churches. The total estate valued at $50,000. Among the items to be auctioned off will be a 1800 Empire Veneer bed. Miss Lizzie was a graduate of the Athenaeum, married twice, divorced twice. Her first husband was Mr. Woodcoff and her 2nd husband was Dr. B. Bawdeem.

April 7 – A wreaking crew razes the home of Miss Elizabeth Pillow Porter “Miss Lizzie”. They uncovered 150 year old cedar logs believed erected in 1816 by Nathan Vaught.

April 21 – Monsanto donates 50,000 lb phosphate rock to Maury County Park for display. The 25 ton rock is believed to be the largest piece of phosphate ever taken from Maury County and can be viewed at the park entrance.

April 28 – The Maury County School Board approves a 20 acre building site for new school at Mt Pleasant road & Cross Bridges, cost $42,500. Land purchased from Walter Sims and Henry McCall.

May 2 – The first jet ever lands at Maury County airport on 3275 feet runway owned by Stauffer Chemical.

June 14 – Maury County Hospital dedicated Walton Wing of hospital new 23 bed wing. Dr. Walton delivered over 5000 babies in Maury County over 45 year career, he was also a member of Maury County Court.

June 27 – Maury County Hospital receives Mrs. Theresa McGavok Smiser estate according to her will, total value between $400,000 and $500,000. Mrs. Smiser recently died at Maury hospital, 81. She requested a memorial be named for her husband, Booker Smiser and herself.

Jan 7 – Mr. Cyrill Evers built a playhouse for his daughter’s from the salvaged pieces of Miss Lizzie Porter’s old house.

Jan 9 – The Maury County Court approved the Library Boards proposal to build a new library at the corner of West 7th and Academy Lane for $202, 950. The County will commit $75,000, Columbia to commit $75,000, $32,500 to come from Miss Lizzie Porter’s estate, $33,000 from Federal funds and $16,000 from Ms. Jennie Harris Southall Memorial Fund for 10,000 sq foot facility.

Jan 13 – Over 500 students enrolled at Columbia Community College, with 33 facility members. Six new buildings under construction on Hampshire pike.

Jan 17 – The history of the Columbia Students club published in booklet form. The Club is believed to be the oldest literary club in Tennessee. The booklet compiled by Mrs. Jerry L White and Mrs. James Finney Jr.. The club was formed in 1896 by Dr. D.D. Little.

Jan 18 – The Rob Roy plant closes in Mt Pleasant, 150 jobs lost, plant moved to Lewisburg.

Feb 4 – Federal law suit filed in Nashville charges voting districts in 95 Counties violate 14th amendment, ask for reapportionment and one man-one vote.

March 15 – Oprah Winfrey moved to Nashville at 13 years of age to live with her father, Vernon Winfrey. She graduated from East Hill high school and entered Tennessee State University, later worked for channel 5 in Nashville.

March 15 – Columbia Community College temporary quarters at Memorial Building, Fist Baptist church, CMA science lab and Admission office on Wet 7th street all closed.

March 23 – The old cupola of the old Andrews school was torn down to replace the roof on the old building which is being used as a warehouse. The building is all that remains of the Columbia Conference College Est. by the Methodist Episcopal church in 1850.

March 22 – The National Farmers Organization (NFO) in 25 states is pouring milk down the gutter to protest milk prices. In Nashville, a truck hauler for the Nashville milk producers Association was blown up by dynamite.

March 25 – Milk shortages reported in Columbia as a result of NFO withholding milk delivery.

March 27 – Some 200 students and 100 parents of Hay Long High School refused to attend classes and appeared on campus to protest the suspension of senior, David Bishop. The group marched into the principals office chanting “We want David back.” A petition with 700 names protesting the suspension was presented. Bishop was suspended after he violated probation and took some uniforms from Franklin High School basketball team. The school board voted to uphold the suspension.

March 29 – The NFO signs contract for milk delivery in Maury County.

Sept 18 – A historical marker placed on the grave of Nathan Vaught by Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities in Rose Hill cemetery. Vaught was master builder in Columbia, one of the founders of the Rose Hill cemetery and went to Alabama to obtain 80 pine trees that he planted in rose hill. He also wrote his memoirs “Youth and old Age.”

Sept 19 – Federal agents bust largest ever moonshine still near Maury County line. Operation had three 1000 gallon stills and one 850 gallon Still that turned out 150 gallons of moonshine daily. Arrested were Robert Carl “Mulehead” Hudgins and Johnny Franklin Tyler of Hickman County, released on $500 bond.

Aug 30 – 40 Maury County Negro leaders call for change in reapportionment plan adopted by County Commission. Rev. James Caldwell, President of Maury County Voters Council said “Negros are not getting a fair break in reapportionment” and threatened to file suit. The group listed other grievances including no job opportunities for blacks, unpaved streets, no representation on Park boards, recreation boards or Columbia community college. CarverSmith School still segregated, lack of housing and Monsanto’s hiring practices.

Aug 31 – Maury County School Board votes to close Mynders school. School was opened in 1922 and has only 36 enrolled.

Sept 3 – Fire destroyed Jack Warren stables in Spring Hill, killing 21 prize show horses valued at $240,000 in 26 stall barn, office and tack room, cause unknown.

Sept 12 – Four Negro teachers in Columbia are alleging race discrimination in hiring and placement of teachers here and have filed suit in Federal court. The compliant filed by Miss Florence Ella Hatton, a teacher displaced by transfer, Rev. James W Caldwell, a teacher at Carver-Smith, Rev. James S Harris and Mrs. Dorothy M Johnson. The suit asked the court to set aside all faculty assignments by race.

Sept 12 – The Maury County School Board voted to change policy and allow unwed mother’s to attend school.

Sept 25 – Mr. Lon MacFarland, President of Middle Tennessee Bank announced they acquired all stock in Hampshire bank.

Sept 27 – The Maury County Squires declared “Charles F Arrants Day” for the popular County agent for his last 30 years of “distinguished service” to the people of Maury County upon his retirement. Mr. J.B. Sheppard named as his successor.

Oct 16 – The Middle Tennessee Bank purchased the “Barr corner’ at north Garden and 6th street from Mr. Hiram H Barr for $12,000.

Oct 16 – Major David Johnson 29, of Columbia killed in helicopter training crash at Fort Rucker, Ala. Major Johnson was son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Johnson of Columbia and had served in Korea 13 months and 13 months in Vietnam. While in Vietnam his helicopter was shot down four times.

Nov 6 – Maury County voted Wallace=8152; Nixon=3068; Humphrey=3476, re-elected William Anderson Congressman, approved Tennessee constitution 7379-1354.

Nov 9 – The American Legion Post #170 dedicated new facility on E 11th street, cost $50,000 for 4000 sq foot facility.

Nov 21 – Maury County School Superintendent, Ed Cox testified in Federal Court that the proposed Mid-term desegregation plan for Maury County would “create dissention and hatred” among the children involved. Clark School PTA also opposed the plan. Maury County desegregation plan would close Carver-Smith school and move all students to Columbia Central High School and Whitthorne Jr. High School.

Originally called “Mulberry Hill” and built by Mr. Dale in 1832, later owned by Matthew W Cooper and Colonel Duncan Cooper who was convicted and pardoned for the murder of Senator Edward Carmack.

April 17 – Developer George E Jordon of Montgomery, Ala. Said he will raze the beautiful historic Blythewood home to construct a 20 store air conditioned shopping mall on old Hatcher property at intersection of city by-pass and Highway 43.

April 23 – The Craig Bridge near Williamsport over the Duck River collapsed as 36,000 lb earth moving machine crossed it. Buck Thurman, the truck driver escaped injury. The state put a 30,000 pound load on the bridge but didn’t tell Maury County.

May 13 – Buck Harmon of Columbia caught 45 lb yellow catfish below the Sowell Mill Pike bridge on the Duck River. The fish measured 48 inches long.

May 13 – Federal Judge, Frank Gray Jr. approves closing of Carver-Smith High school over the attorney objections of Horace Avon Williams who represented Negro plaintiffs Rev. May 1 – 300 Civil War re-enactors demonstrated “Pickets Charge” at Gettysburg on the Yeatman farm, also known as “Hamilton Place” on Mt Pleasant Pike, over 1000 watched the charge. Funds raised go to Gettysburg monument.

May 14 – Tommy Crain, a 6 th grade student at Brown Elementary school found a 500,000 year old “Cephalopod” fossil on his grandfathers farm on Lewisburg pike, according to letter sent by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

July 1 – Union Carbide plant report says 810 employees had $11.3 million paid out to them under company saving plan in 1974. Under the plan Union Carbide employees can save up to 7.5 percent of pay and company matches with 10, 20 or 30 percent of the amount saved.

July 31 – Miss Gail Gulley shot and killed by her ex-boy friend on 3rd floor on Maury County court house. A argument broke out over accusations that Mr. Nolen set fire to Miss Gulley’s car. She pulled out 22 pistol and shot him four times.

Aug 2 – The Maury County Planning Commission reports annexation of Porter Hills, Westwood, Sunnyside, Criddle Meadows, Windmere and Brown school area will add 5000 residents if Columbia annexed, says Chairman, Barrett James.
