IBIZA NEEDS YOU! Its 2015, Ibiza is at an all-time high in terms of tourists visiting, money being made, prices exploding, endless traffic jams and beaches covered in loungers; leaving no space for beach towels. Everybody is incredibly important and showing off is as essential as recording entire nights with a smartphone.

Dancing seems to be a dying amusement and socializing is only practiced via the antisocial networks. A party, promoter or artist is ranked by the amount of ‘friends’ and ‘likes’ and if you are not in the top ten on Google search you are nobody anyway.

Luxury yachts spread all over the sea ripping the Posidonia out with their anchors, private jets invade the airport even if they are only chartered from Mallorca to give the impression of being super rich, as super sports cars invade our streets – all with the purpose to outplay possible competitors at any cost. Garbage is spread all over our beaches; the waysides of our streets are covered in cans, cigarette butts and plastic bags.

On the other hand living in Ibiza is getting more and more difficult, rental prices are at an all-time high, living costs are exploding and the wages are at the same sad level as they were years ago, plus the working conditions are as bad as they can be during the high season.

This, all together, sums up to a lethal cocktail that makes it almost impossible for seasonal workers to come to the promised land – years ago you could make good money while working your ass off and spend a relaxed winter anywhere you came from, nowadays lots of people come and pay to work – wtf?

What Ibiza needs is people that actually care about the island, that contribute something to its preservation as a tourist destination and an all-year-paradise to live in while getting a fair treatment in terms of wages, housing and living costs.

The good news is – change is happening! Ibiza town just voted its youngest Major of all times, we got our DJ as his Deputy and institutions like the IPF actually make a difference. We have interviewed them and the Deputy in this issue, and we invite you to do the same, be a part of the island, use it - don’t abuse it, and ensure a healthy and beautiful future for this unique place we call our home – Ibiza.

Estamos en el año 2015, Ibiza se encuentra en constante alza en términos de turistas que la visitan, dinero que se gana, precios por las nubes, atascos de tráfico interminables y playas cubiertas de tumbonas, sin espacio para ninguna toalla de playa. Todo el mundo es increíblemente importante y lucirse es tan esencial como grabar noches enteras con el smartphone, bailar parece ser un entretenimiento en declive y socializar se practica tan sólo a través de las redes antisociales. Una fiesta, un promotor o un artista se clasifican con base en la cantidad de ‘amigos’ y de ‘me gusta’ y, de todas maneras, si no estás en el top diez en la búsqueda de Google no eres nadie.

Yates de lujo se extienden a lo largo del mar, arrancando con sus anclas la posidonia, jets privados invaden el aeropuerto, incluso si tan sólo se alquilan desde Mallorca para dar la impresión de super riqueza, al tiempo que super coches deportivos invaden nuestras calles – todo con el propósito de superar a toda costa a los posibles competidores. La basura se amontona a lo largo y ancho de nuestras playas, las cunetas de nuestras carreteras están cubiertas de latas, colillas y bolsas de plástico.

Por el otro lado, vivir en Ibiza se está haciendo cada vez más difícil; Los precios de los alquileres están también siempre en una constante subida, el coste de la vida está por las nubes y los sueldos están al mismo triste nivel que estaban años atrás, además de que las condiciones de trabajo son tan malas como lo pueden ser durante la temporada alta.

Puesto todo junto, se convierte en un cóctel letal que hace que sea casi imposible que los trabajadores de temporada vengan a la tierra prometida – hace años podías venirte aquí para ganar un buen dinero reventándote a trabajar y pasarte luego un invierno relajado donde quiera que sea el lugar del que hubieras venido. Hoy en día mucha gente viene y paga para trabajar – pero, ¡¿qué coño?!

Lo que Ibiza necesita es gente que en realidad se preocupe por la isla, que contribuya con algo en su preservación como un destino turístico y como un paraíso para vivir durante todo el año mientras se consigue un trato justo en términos de sueldos, vivienda y coste de vida.

La buena noticia es que el cambio está sucediendo. La ciudad de Ibiza acaba de votar a su alcalde más joven de la historia, nosotros tenemos a nuestro DJ como su diputado e instituciones como el IPF realmente marcan la diferencia. Los hemos entrevistado, así como al diputado, a respecto de este tema y te invitamos a que tú hagas lo mismo. Sé una parte de la isla, úsala – no abuses de ella- y asegura un hermoso y saludable futuro para este lugar único que nosotros llamamos hogar – Ibiza.

15 years dub Ibiza network - seems like it was yesterday when this whole project started. You can read a brief overview in this edition.

And it again feels like we will never come to an end - already two nights with almost no sleep and another three to go... This truly is a mind trip without taking anything but squeezing the last bit of energy and creativity out of our brains. The funny thing is the more you squeeze the less comes out - until you are totally over the top and - miraculously - the well starts to spit out one thought after the other, until you get a total system overload. We got quite political in this issue, interviewing the great Joan Ribas as our new Deputy of the Mayor in Ibiza, and another great piece about the IPF. It is about time we hold our heads up high and speak the truth, that is why we solidarize with the french magazine Charlie Hebdo as well - Je suis Charlie. Or as we like to say : qnp -quality never prostitutes.

My grandfather built a house on the island in the early 70s, and I have spent in Ibiza many of my vacations. Having worked in Guatemala and Mexico for 4 years in environmental projects, I have realized that Ibiza is also a paradise worth protecting and have found that working with the IPF is a perfect way to achieve this goal.

WHO FOUNDED THE IPF AND WHO ARE THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT? The founders of the IPF were Ben Goldsmith, Serena Cook and William Aitken, with the aim to give back to the island, and prevent Ibiza from becoming another ultra developed tourism destination such as Benidorm. Since our creation in 2009 we have worked under the umbrella of the UK Charity Ecology Trust. Presently, we are in the process of creating a Spanish Foundation, the Fundación para la Conservación de Ibiza, with a Board and an Advisory Council of local and international experts.

HOW DO YOU GET THE MONEY TO FINANCE THE DIFFERENT PROJECTS? Most of our funds come from private supporters, many from the UK but also from Germany, Italy and Spain. We have also agreements with local businesses, such as La Paloma, El Chiringuito or Can Talaias, that give their clients the possibility to support us through initiatives such as the “1 euro per table” or “3 euros per room”. We welcome other committed businesses to contact us to explore other collaboration agreements.

THE IPF HELPED TO CREATE AND SUSTAIN THE ‘ALIANZA MAR BLAVA’, AN ALLIANCE TO STOP THE OIL DRILLING PROJECTS IN THE GULF OF VALENCIA – HOW DID THAT COME TO LIFE? 3 years ago when I started working at the IPF, I was very surprised to learn that local institutions seemed to have accepted that there were to be oil explorations in front of Ibiza. After talking to several stakeholders, we suggested creating an Alliance that would bring together all of us, from businesses to local governments and NGOs. By coordinating our efforts and showing the central government (Madrid) that all the island was against oil drilling we had better chances to fight against it.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR IS THE FACT THAT CAIRN, ONE OF THE COMPANIES TRYING TO GET A LICENSE TO DRILL, PULLED BACK. HOW DID THAT COME? We believe that the fact that we showed so much public opposition was crucial, as well as providing technical evidence of the biological importance of the area (dolphins and whales corridor, posidonia fields, etc.). We also coordinated our actions with international NGOs such as Greenpeace, which promoted action in front of Cairn offices in Scotland, and had very good contacts with Spanish and UK press.

THERE ARE OTHER COMPANIES STILL TRYING TO GET A LICENSE TO DRILL FOR OIL, HOW DO YOU SEE THE CHANCES FOR THEM TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOAL? We are still threatened by Spectrum Geo Ltd and Seabird Exploration. Spectrum applied for acoustic surveys in a very large area of the Balearic Sea. It opened the application several months ago but has not begun the technical process yet, and time goes against it. We are optimistic that Cairn withdrawal can have a strong influence on their strategy.

Seabird Exploration and Cairn have also applied for acoustic surveys at the Golfo of León, North from Menorca. They seem to be gathering their efforts there and technically could have more possibilities.

Although it is further from Ibiza we firmly believe we should keep our pressure to achieve a Western Mediterranean free of oil.

THE IPF AS WELL SUPPORTS ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES, WHY IS THE WHOLE ISLAND’S ELECTRICAL SUPPLY STILL DEPENDENT ON TRADITIONAL COMPANIES – AS FAR AS WE KNOW WE GOT AN AVERAGE OF MORE THAN 300 DAYS OF SUN PER YEAR?

If we want to be coherent, we strongly believe that we should not only say NO to oil but also say YES to renewable energies, and strongly promote them. As you very rightly point out, on an island were we have so much sun we could be 100% dependent on solar energy. Although it is technically possible, legal uncertainty due to changes in national regulation has prevented many from investing on solar panels.

ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT TOPIC IS THE ESCALATING WATER DEMAND ON IBIZA, LEADING TO DEPLETED AND POLLUTED AQUIFERS. WHAT GENERAL SOLUTIONS ARE THERE AND WHAT CAN EACH PERSON DO TO IMPROVE THIS SITUATION? Together with the Balearic University and local NGO GEN, we have presented to the press and the local town halls an important study on Ibiza’s water situation. As part of the study we have included 10 recommendations for a more sustainable water management. One of the most pressing one is providing Sant Josep with desalinated water, so as not to keep using its very damaged aquifers and to declare them overexploited, to allow them to recover. Of course each of us is also responsible for a wise use of water at our home, garden, or swimming pool.

WE GOT HUGE FIELDS OF ABANDONED FARMLAND ON IBIZA BUT CURIOUSLY MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ASK FOR ORGANIC PRODUCTS, IDEALLY GROWN IN IBIZA, ISN’T THAT A CONTRADICTION?

opportunity for young people to go back to the land, provided they receive marketing support and technical training. Our support to EcoFeixes (the local organic producers’ cooperative) and their land bank project, wants to bridge that gap.

FINALLY THE MAYBE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION – HOW CAN EACH ONE CONTRIBUTE TO PRESERVE OUR ISLANDS IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY AND SUPPORT THE IPF DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY? POR FAVOR, PARA EMPEZAR CUÉNTANOS DE DÓNDE VIENES Y CÓMO PASASTE A FORMAR PARTE DEL IPF. Yo soy de Barcelona y siempre he estado muy cerca de Ibiza. En los años 70 mi abuelo construyó una casa en la isla y yo he pasado en Ibiza muchas de mis vacaciones. Habiendo trabajado durante 4 años en proyectos medioambientales en México y Guatemala me di cuenta de que Ibiza es también un paraíso que merece la pena proteger y he descubierto que trabajar en el IPF es el modo perfecto de alcanzar este objetivo.

¿QUIÉN FUE EL FUNDADOR DEL IPF Y QUIÉNES SON LAS PERSONAS POR DETRÁS DE ESTE FONDO? Los fundadores del IPF fueron Ben Goldsmith, Serena Cook y William Aitken. Lo fundaron con el objetivo de devolver la isla a lo que era y evitar que Ibiza se convirtiera en otro destino turístico ultraurbanizado, tal como lo es por ejemplo Benidorm. Desde su creación en el 2009 hemos trabajado bajo la protección del UK Charity Ecology Trust. La mayor parte de nuestros fondos provienen de colaboradores privados, muchos de ellos del Reino Unido, pero algunos también de Alemania, Italia y España. También poseemos acuerdos con empresas locales –tales como La Paloma, El Chiringuito o Can Talaias- que ofrecen a sus clientes la posibilidad de respaldarnos a través de iniciativas como “1 euro por mesa” o “3 euros por habitación”. EL IPF AYUDÓ A CREAR Y AYUDA A MANTENER LA ORGANIZACIÓN ‘ALIANZA MAR BLAVA’ – UNA ALIANZA PARA DETENER LOS PROYECTOS DE PROSPECCIÓN PETROLÍFERA EN EL GOLFO DE VALENCIA- ¿CÓMO COBRÓ VIDA ESTO? Hace 3 años, cuando empecé a trabajar en el IPF, me sorprendió mucho descubrir que instituciones locales parecían haber aceptado el hecho de que iban a realizarse proyectos de explotación petrolífera en frente de Ibiza. Después de hablar con varios accionistas, sugerimos crear la Alianza que nos uniría a todos nosotros, desde empresas hasta gobiernos locales y ONGs. Al coordinar nuestros esfuerzos y mostrar al gobierno central (Madrid) que las islas estaban en contra de la perforación petrolífera teníamos mayores probabilidades de luchar contra ello.

UNO DE LOS MAYORES LOGROS HASTA EL MOMENTO ES EL HECHO DE QUE CAIRN, UNA DE LAS EMPRESAS QUE ESTABAN INTENTANDO CONSEGUIR UNA LICENCIA PARA PERFORAR, SE HA ECHADO ATRÁS. ¿CÓMO SUCEDIÓ ESTO? Creemos que el hecho de demostrar una oposición pública tan grande fue crucial en este caso. Así como también el que proporcionáramos evidencias técnicas de la importancia biológica de la zona (pasillo para delfines y ballenas, campos de posidonia, etc.).

Además, también hemos coordinado nuestras acciones con ONGs internacionales tales como Greenpeace, que promovieron acciones en frente de las oficinas de Cairn, en Escocia, y que poseen muy buenos contactos con la prensa en España y el Reino Unido.

HAY OTRAS EMPRESAS QUE TODAVÍA ESTÁN INTENTANDO OBTENER UNA LICENCIA PARA PERFORAR EN BUSCA DE PETRÓLEO, ¿QUÉ PROBABILIDADES CREÉIS VOSOTROS QUE TIENEN DE ALCANZAR SU OBJETIVO?

Todavía estamos amenazados por Spectrum Geo Ltd y Seabird Exploration. Spectrum solicitó aprobación para realizar sondeos acústicos en un área muy extensa del mar Balear. Dio entrada a su solicitud hace varios meses, pero no ha empezado todavía con el proceso técnico y el tiempo corre en su contra. Nosotros nos sentimos optimistas y creemos que la retirada de Cairn puede tener una gran influencia en su estrategia. Seabird Exploration y Cairn también han solicitado sondeos acústicos en el golfo de León, al norte de Menorca. Parece que estén concentrando sus esfuerzos allí y técnicamente podrían tener más posibilidades. Aunque está más alejado de Ibiza, creemos firmemente que deberíamos mantener nuestra presión para conseguir un mar Mediterráneo occidental libre de petróleo.

El IPF también apoya las energías alternativas, ¿por qué el suministro eléctrico de toda la isla todavía depende de empresas tradicionales? Por lo que sabemos, tenemos una media de más de 300 días de sol al año. Si queremos ser coherentes, nosotros creemos que no sólo deberíamos decir NO al petróleo, sino que también deberíamos decir SÍ a las energías renovables y fomentarlas encarecidamente. Como bien has apuntado, en una isla en la que disponemos de tanto sol podríamos depender al 100% de la energía solar. Si bien esto es técnicamente posible, la incertidumbre legal a causa de cambios en la regulación nacional ha frenado a muchos a la hora de invertir en paneles solares.

OTRO TÓPICO MUY IMPORTANTE ES LA CRECIENTE DEMANDA DE AGUA EN IBIZA, QUE ESTÁ LLEVADO AL AGOTAMIENTO Y LA CONTAMINACIÓN DE LOS ACUÍFEROS. ¿QUÉ SOLUCIONES GENERALES EXISTEN Y QUÉ PODEMOS HACER CADA UNO DE NOSOTROS PARA MEJORAR ESTA SITUACIÓN? Junto con la Universidad de las Islas Baleares y la ONG local GEN, hemos presentado a la prensa y a los ayuntamientos locales un importante estudio de la situación del agua en Ibiza. Como parte del estudio hemos incluido 10 recomendaciones para una gestión del agua más sostenible. Una de las más apremiantes es crear una desalinizadora en Sant Josep, para no continuar utilizando los ya muy perjudicados acuíferos, y declarar dichos acuíferos superexplotados, para permitir así que se recuperen. Por supuesto que cada uno de nosotros es también responsable por un uso más racional del agua en nuestra casa, nuestro jardín o nuestra piscina.

EN IBIZA TENEMOS ENORMES CAMPOS DE CULTIVO ABANDONADOS, PERO CURIOSAMENTE CADA VEZ MÁS Y MÁS PERSONAS BUSCAN PRODUCTOS ORGÁNICOS Y, A SER POSIBLE, CULTIVADOS EN IBIZA. ¿NO ES ESTO UNA CONTRADICCIÓN?

Son muy buenas noticias que cada vez más gente esté buscando productos orgánicos. De hecho, en Ibiza la demanda es mayor que la oferta, lo que significa que una gran cantidad de los productos orgánicos proceden de la península. Por el otro lado, mucha gente ha abandonado las tierras que pertenecían a su familia a causa de los sueldos más elevados que pagaba el sector turístico. La producción orgánica, con precios de mercado más elevados, ofrece una buena oportunidad a la gente joven para volver a cultivar la tierra, siempre y cuando estos reciban respaldo de marketing y preparación técnica. Nuestro apoyo a EcoFeixes (la cooperativa de productores orgánicos locales) y su proyecto banco de tierra tiene como objetivo salvar esa distancia.

On the backside, facing the old town wall, you will find Out of Time People, not just breakfast but a real spiritual encounter! If you want to have a good valued and filling breakfast you can go to Hostal Parque opposite Sunset Café, always packed and just

as good! You’re staying somewhere outside Ibiza town? In Jesus you have to try the Bon Lloc or the San Francisco on the road to Talamanca on the left side. Cana Negreta on the road to Sta. Eulalia offers you Bar Toni, very reasonable prices! In Sta. Eulalia you should visit the Croissant Show or the Buenissimo on the main road, or the Café Sidney inside the port of Eulalia. San Carlos hosts the classic Bar Anita, THE reference for breakfast, bocadillos, tapas etc… San Juan is just as original, there the place is called Vista Alegre, or try the Giri Café with their fantastic restaurant. In San Lorenzo La Paloma is where you should go, not just good breakfast but a fantastic brunch and buffet as well! In San Miguel you have to visit the ‘Café of the false teeth’ in the market place, coffee for 1 Euro! Sta. Gertrudis, still my favourite, offers savoury breakfasts from 08.00h at Can Partit or fancy Musset, good breakfast, breads and midday menus are back. If you stay in San Antonio you should visit the very end of the port, there you find the Café des Port, best food at best prices. Or try Kumharas in the west end, they stay open the whole day, with breakfast, lunch, exotic dinner and unique Ibiza Spirit. In San Rafael you should try the Bar Cruce, THE place for a strong coffee and the latest gossip on the big terrace. Sta. Ines offers the famous Bar Cosmi, not just for Breakfast.

You Broke-your-fast? Then let’s go and get some sun. If you are into sunbathing be very very careful, don’t stay too long, have a carrot juice before and use natural sun protection, if not your holiday can become a nightmare! In case you get sunburned you should use yoghurt or fresh lemon juice to cool it, then fresh Aloe Vera to calm it down.

In Salinas my first choice was, is and will always be the one and only Sa Trinxa, unique crowd, Balearic Beats and high quality food for a reasonable price… and try the Sangria! Jockey Club, the adjacent Malibu and Guaraná are beautiful spots to disconnect and enjoy life. In Es Cavallet, on the other side of Salinas, you can find the Es Cavallet Chiringuito or the Chiringuay further down the beach, the latter is home to the more colourful crowd a dream! In Playa d’en Bossa you find hot spots in its true sense, Beach House hosts some fine events and serves great food.

White Ibiza is hidden behind Lips, great atmo and food for a reasonable price! Coco Beach is high quality service at a high price – try the Currywurst! For a upper class dining experience try Sirocco - and Bora Bora just goes on and on and on! Cala Nova behind Es Canar is a gorgeous beach to relax and sunbath, plus you will find Atzaro Beach, a perfect spot to dine, enjoy life and see and be seen. In Es Canar you find Nikki Beach, see and be seen is the motto. Chirincana in Es Canar is the best spot to do some water-sports in a most cool surrounding - but be aware of the prices for drinks! Enough tourists? Cala d’Hort offers the view to the legendary Es Vedra, 360 meters of magnetic rock – a must. Sa Caleta is a dream for bathing and you must try their Café Caleta, as is Es Codolar behind the airport, no sandy beach but inside the water yes, and this is just crystalline - and you can take your dog even in high season! Cala Jondal presents Yemanja and Tropicana for food and Blue Marlin for drinks - very posh and perfect to spot, see and be seen.

SA TRINXA

San Antonio is massive, but you have to know where to go. A must is still Café del Mar or the Golden Buddha around the corner, not to forget Kumharas, truly the best sunsets, a place you cannot miss to find the authentic Ibiza. Cala Moli is a secret tip, after San Antonio head south, follow the signs, it is worth the search!

Cala Conta hosts the Sunset Ashram, a gorgeous beach club with a pictoresque sunset and great music. Cala Xarraca high up in the north is a must-see as well, or Cala Benirras next to San Miguel, once home to the legendary drum festival… There you find places like Elements, perfect to charge batteries.

Aguas Blancas on the way to Cala San Vicente is a perfect spot to take a dip, clear water and relatively few people. One real secret tip is the El Bigote in the Cala Mastella (after San Carlos head north and follow the signs), most fresh seafood of your life. Between Sta. Eulalia and Jesus comes Cala Llonga, follow the signs to Amante, a hidden spot surrounded by rocks, a perfect restaurant and perfect to relax and chill… We do not forget s’Estanyol, go half way from Jesus to Talamanca, take a left up the mountain and then follow the sign down to the beach, a spot to disconnect and recharge your batteries with coolest beats. In Santa Eulalia on the way to Es Canar you find Babylon Beach, turn right just before the big Eroski supermarket and head down. Cool atmo and chilled beats from George Solar + friends await you. In Es Figueral the crew of Las Dalias hosts the beach chiringuito converting it into a not-so-secret spot to relax and recharge - try it out!

SHOPPING? For sure, you are on holiday! The price range is enormous, but all named here are worth a visit: Las Dalias just before San Carlos is home to the one and only Hippie market, here everybody finds something really original. For leather you should go to Darío Bomé in San Miguel, see Manfred Postel’s shop in Sta. Ines, visit Te Cuero in Sta. Gertrudis or combine beach and shopping at Salinas parking place with Hecho A Mano, best leather garments ever. For souvenirs and fashion go to Histericcompliments on Vara de Rey. You can find all sport brands cheap in La Sirena, there are lots on the island. You have to visit the old town of Ibiza, this is the real deal, you just have to look around!

Hippychick is another secret tip; you can find it in three places: c/Ses Figueres in Talamanca and Playa Cala Vadella. In Fashion Pirate on the Vara de Rey you can get quality fashion for a reasonable price. A complete different experience is Vicente Ganesh in the Marina, vintage second hand designer clothings and incredible accessoires are just a few things to explore.

The shop from Carhartt opposite the taxi stand in Ibiza town is another hot spot for the urban inspired, as is the Religion shop opposite of Vara de Rey towards the port - for the true stylish.

Not a fashion shop but a kind of all-in-one is the Cocoq Store on the road to Sta. Eulalia after the Go Kart, a real shopping orgasm.

If you look for second hand of all kind visit the Troc on the road to the vehicle inspection.

HUNGER... a basic need, and here in Ibiza you should pay special attention to it, because the nights are very exhausting. There are so many incredibly good restaurants we can not mention because of the lack of space, but here are some of the best ones: Power food is available in various places such as Es Tap Nou in the center of Ibiza, fresh veggies and fruits become your juice or salad of the day. A great new spot is the Eat is Life at the roundabout of Can Misses – you can choose from a most healthy buffet and get fantastic food for a great price! Another hot spot is the Local’s Only on the Placa del Parque, creative Mediterranean food for a reasonable price. Oli All in Puig d’en Valls is a real tip, great food and drinks for a reasonable price - try the Kobe burger!

Cheap, good, fresh and fast? Comida San Juan near the Teatro Pereira is the one for you. A local tip is the Es Fornas next to the sport centre between Ibiza and Puig d’en Valls, Theo prepares best homemade food for a great price. Same for Es Cami Vell – one of THE lunch special places - fast, tasty, cheap. The Bar1805 near the Dome is famous for their mussels plus you have to try the Absinthe cocktail - Ye Ha! Fresh fish? Hotel La Marina in the port of Ibiza. High quality french and international food? Pastis on the backside of the Plaça del Parque - a must. Want some real Indian food? Try the Ancient People on the Avenida España, best food for best price, and the Dahl is a must! Thai fusion food is available at Bambuddha Grove on the road to San Juan or try Casa Thai 2 on Avda. Isidoro Macabich/San Antonio – my personal fave, as well as Chang Mai in Sta. Eulalia close to the main place.

Meat? Es Canto in Sta. Gertrudis for the best beefsteak and Can Caus for the slices of beef solomillo on your own barbecue. Best Jamon Serrano-Bocadillo? Bar Costa in Sta. Gertrudis. Perfect food by the seaside? Café Sidney in the port of Sta. Eulalia is the right choice, as is Sa Punta in Talamanca.

La Luna Nell’ Orto in San Miguel is one of the most authentic restaurants of all times. In Sta. Eulalia we recommend SomiArt by Foc y Fum on the esplanade, not just perfect food but performances in a special surrounding – a must.

Casa Colonial on the road to Sta. Eulalia is a real escape in another world, best fusion food and service! The new Catch Ibiza on the Sta. Eulalia road before Cana Negreta on the left side fuses food, music and great cocktails. In Km5 on the road to San Jose you can have fantastic meat in a unique atmosphere, a real trip. A great escape is the BHS (BoutiqueHotelSalinas) just after the roundabout of Salinas, high-quality tasty food in a beautiful setting. The Can Pilot in San Rafael serves the best ‘Entraña’ (Argentinean cut of meat) on the island. Great italian food? Try the Tomate Rojo next to the Mc Donalds in Figueretas, freshest italian food to take away or inhouse.

If you want to eat a REAL chicken you have to go to Can Balafia on the road to San Juan, you’ve never tried one like this before, all homemade, from the potatoes over their very own chicken to their Hierbas. In San Antonio we have to mention Kumharas again and again, finest fusion food flavoured with easy beats.

Expensive and worth it? Sa Capella up in San Antonio, Las dos Lunas on the Ibiza – San An road or Ama Lur by the Sta. Gertrudis roundabout or the new Heart Ibiza by Cirque du Soleil and the Adria brothers next to the Casino de Ibiza. Definitely Atzaró on the San Juan road Km15, you never saw a garden more beautiful and the food is excellent. You prefer fast food? The Huehner Karl in the port of Sta. Eulalia for German style, Mister Kebap also in Sta. Eulalia or Albertos Doener in Playa d’en Bossa opposite Sankeys. Burger? Discoburger on calle Bartolome Rosello/Ibiza and Vinyl Burger in Sant Jordi. Best Sunset Dinner? Definitely Kumharas in San Antonio, las Puertas del Cielo above Sta. Ines, Sunset Ashram in Cala Conta and, in some months, Cala d’Hort with the view to Es Vedra - or any other of the countless beaches on the west side of Ibiza, you just have to find it :-) Something missing? Oh yeah, it is what most of you come for: PAAAADYYY!

More than 400 bars, 6 big clubs and 5-10 small ones, at least 300 DJ cabins waiting to be spinned. For a perfect warm-up visit the Mambo Bar in Ibiza’s port and walk through the freshly refurbished area! In Sta. Eulalia you should go to Guaraná, Sundays live music, the other days you can enjoy some of the finest house music. Ibiza-Origins? Las Dalias on the way to San Carlos will hold fine events like Namasté. Our beloved Underground on the Ibz – San An road is another of our living rooms, best homemade beats and great guest nights like Tini and the Gang. Km5 on the road to San Jose has definitely the most beautiful garden; here you meet the Ibiza crowd in a perfect surrounding. Veto is a true social club with a very open-minded attitude, on the road to Pacha. Sansara on the road from Sta. Eulalia to San Carlos offers a healthy mix of live and electronic with Bravofox on Tuesdays, Paco Fernandez Thursdays and Local Heroes Fridays, plus different events Saturdays. Pure Ibiza Spirit.

LET’S GO TO THE CLUBS! Nowhere else in Europe will you find such a high concentration of big clubs, for years one of them is voted best club worldwide by the prestigious IDMA awards at the Miami Winter Music Conference. Every year it is a kind of charade as lots of promoters and nights exchange place and everybody wonders how it will work out for all of them... There are about 40.000 pleasure seekers out every night looking for the ultimate kick so there is a chance that all the superclubs get a good share of it.

Si quieres ‘des-ayunar’ en Ibiza tienes varios sitios donde elegir, seguimos recomendando el Croissant Show. Desde las 7:30 en adelante puedes conseguir tu dosis de cafeína y la mejor bollería… en el Sunset Café no sólo puedes relajarte con un café, aperitivo, cerveza o lo que sea, también puedes elegir sandwiches riquísimos, pizzas y una amplia gama de cócteles y chupitos. Somos parte de la familia… En la parte de atrás, mirando a la muralla, encontrarás el Out of Time People, ¡no sólo un desayuno, sino un verdadero encuentro espiritual! Si quieres un desayuno barato y que te llene puedes ir al Hostal Parque, enfrente al Sunset Café, ¡siempre a tope e igual de bueno! ¿Estas fuera de la ciudad de Ibiza? En Jesús tienes que visitar el Bon Lloc o el San Francisco en la calle Talamanca, del lado izquierdo. Cana Negreta, en la Carretera de Sta. Eulalia, te proponemos el Bar Toni, ¡a precios muy accesibles! En Sta. Eulalia deberías visitar el Bueníssimo en la carretera principal o el Café Sidney dentro del puerto. San Carlos te ofrece el clásico de los clásicos - Bar Anita, punto de referencia para desayunos, bocadillos, tapas y más. San Juan es igual de original, allí el lugar se llama Vista Alegre, o prueba el Giri Café, con su fantástico restaurante nuevo. En San Lorenzo deberías probar la Paloma, no sólo ofrece buenos desayunos, ¡también hacen fantásticos almuerzos y buffets! En San Miguel tienes que visitar el ‘Café de las dentaduras postizas’ en el mercado, ¡café por 1 Euro! Sta. Gertrudis sigue siendo mi favorito, ofrece sabrosos desayunos desde las 8:00 en Can Partit o Musset, están de vuelta los desayunos, panes y menús a mediodía. Si estás alojado en San Antonio por equivocación, o si reservaste un hotel ahí, deberías visitar el Café des Port al final del puerto, la mejor comida al mejor precio. O te vas al Kumharas, en el lado oeste, están abiertos todo el día… con desayunos, almuerzos, cenas exóticas y puro espíritu ibicenco. En San Rafael deberías probar el Bar Cruce, es EL lugar para un café cargadito y los últimos cotilleos en su gran terraza. Sta. Inés ofrece el famoso Bar Cosmi, no sólo para desayunos.

¿Ya has des-ayunado? ¡Pues entonces, vamos a tomar el sol! Si te gusta, ten mucho, mucho cuidado, no te expongas demasiado tiempo al sol y protégete bien tomando un buen zumo de zanahoria y usando protección solar natural, ¡si no tus vacaciones pueden convertirse en una pesadilla! En caso de que te quemes, deberías usar yogur o zumo de limón para refrescar la piel y después Aloe Vera fresco para calmarla.

En Salinas mi primera elección era, es y siempre será el único e incomparable Sa Trinxa, una gente única, ritmos baleares y comida de calidad a precios razonables - ¡y tienes que probar la sangría! El Jockey Club, el Malibu y el Guaraná también son lugares muy bonitos para desconectar y disfrutar de la vida. En Es Cavallet, al otro lado de las Salinas, encuentras el Chiringuito o, bajando más por la playa, el Chiringuay, en este último es donde se junta la gente más pintoresca. ¡Un sueño!

En Playa d’en Bossa encontrarás lugares de moda en el verdadero sentido de la palabra, Beach House alberga algunos de los mejores eventos y sirve fantástica comida. White Ibiza está escondido detrás de Lips, allí encontrarás un ambiente estupendo y comida por unos precios muy razonables. Nassau Beach ofrece servicio de alta calidad a precios altos – pero merece la pena. Para una experiencia gastronómica de clase alta prueba el Sirocco. ¡Y el Bora Bora sigue y sigue y sigue…! CHIRINCANA IN ES CANAR

detrás de Es Canar es la playa perfecta para relajarse y tomar el sol, además encontrarás Atzaro Beach, un lugar perfecto para cenar, disfrutar de la vida, ver y ser visto. En Es Canar encontrarás el Nikki Beach, en donde el lema es ver y ser visto.

Chirincana, también en Es Canar, es EL sitio para los deportes acuáticos en un entorno supercool - ¡pero ten en cuenta los precios de las bebidas! ¿Has tenido bastante ya de turistas? Cala d’Hort te ofrece la vista a la legendaria Es Vedra, 360 metros de roca magnética – una visita obligatoria. Sa Caleta es un sueño para bañarse, y no te vayas sin probar su Café Caleta. Al igual que también es un sueño Es Codolar, detrás del aeropuerto.

Está situado en una playa de piedras, pero sí hay arena debajo del agua, que es de lo más cristalina – ¡y puedes llevarte a tu perro incluso en temporada alta! Cala Jondal ofrece el Yemanja y el Tropicana para comer y el Blue Marlin para las bebidas todos muy fashion y perfectos para relajarse, ver y ser visto.

San Antonio es muy grande, pero tienes que saber muy bien adónde ir. Un sitio que no te debes perder es el Café del Mar o el Golden Buddha a la vuelta de la esquina, y no hay que olvidar Kumharas, sin duda las mejores puestas de sol, un lugar que no te puedes perder si quieres encontrar la verdadera Ibiza. Cala Moli es un consejo secreto - después de San Antonio, dirígete hacia el sur, sigue las indicaciones, ¡merece la pena buscarlo!

Cala Conta alberga el Sunset Ashram, un maravilloso beach club con un pintoresco atardecer y buena música en directo.

Cala Xarraca, en la punta norte, es otro sitio que deberías visitar o Cala Benirras al lado de San Miguel, donde antes se celebraba el legendario festival de tambores. Allí encontrarás lugares como Elements, perfecto para cargar las pilas.

Aguas Blancas, de camino a Cala San Vicente es el sitio perfecto para pararse y darse un baño, la mejor agua y relativamente poca gente. Un consejo realmente secreto es El Bigote en la Cala Mastella (después de San Carlos ve hacia el norte y sigue las indicaciones), el marisco más fresco que hayas probado en tu vida. Entre Sta. Eulalia y Jesús está Cala Llonga, desde allí sigue las indicaciones a Amante, el restaurante perfecto, escondido entre las rocas, lo mejor para relajarse… No nos olvidemos de s’Estanyol, a mitad de camino entre Talamanca y Jesús, gira a la izquierda subiendo la montaña y luego sigue los carteles hasta la playa. Un lugar para desconectar y recargar las pilas al ritmo de los beats más cool… En Santa Eulalia, en el camino a Es Canar, encontrarás el Babylon Beach, gira a la derecha justo antes del gran supermercado Eroski y ve hacia abajo. Un ambiente cool y los relajantes beats de George Solar y amigos te esperan. . En Es Figueral la peña de Las Dalias se ha puesto al mando del chiringuito de la playa y lo ha convertido en un lugar no-tan-secreto para relajarse y recargar baterías ¡pruébalo! ¿NOS VAMOS DE COMPRAS? Claro que sí, ¡estás de vacaciones! La gama de precios es enorme, pero todos los lugares que nombramos a continuación merecen una visita: Las Dalias, justo antes de San Juan es el hogar del único e incomparable mercado hippy, ahí todo el mundo encuentra algo realmente original. Para cosas de cuero deberías ir a Darío Bomé en San Miguel, visitar la tienda de Manfred Postel en Sta. Inés, pasarte por Te Cuero en Sta. Gertrudis o combinar playa y compras en el Salinas parking visitando Hecho A Mano, con los mejores complementos de cuero que hayas visto jamás. Rey. En la Sirena encuentras todas las marcas deportivas a buen precio, hay muchas en la isla. Deberíais visitar la ciudad vieja de Ibiza, esa es la verdadera Ibiza, ¡sólo tienes que mirar a tu alrededor! Hippychick es otro consejo secreto; hay tres en la isla que se encuentran en c/Ses Figueres en Talamanca, Cala Vadella. En Fashion Pirate en Vara de Rey puedes comprar artículos de moda por un precio razonable. Una experiencia diferente es Vicente Ganesh, en la Marina, moda vintage de segunda mano y accesorios increíbles son algunas de las cosas para descubrir. La tienda de Carhartt, enfrente de la parada de taxis en la ciudad de Ibiza, es otro lugar clave para los de inspiración urbana, como también lo es para los modernos la tienda Religion, que se encuentra enfrente de Vara del Rey, dirigiéndose hacia el puerto. No es un tienda de moda, pero sí única en su especie, estamos hablando de Cocoq Store en la carretera a Sta. Eulalia, después del Go Kart, un auténtico orgasmo de las compras. Si buscas por cualquier tipo de cosas de segunda mano visita el Troc, en la carretera a la inspección de vehículos.

HAMBRE… una necesidad básica, y aquí en Ibiza hay que prestarle especial atención, ya que las noches son muy exigentes.

Hay tantos restaurantes increíblemente buenos que no podemos mencionar debido a la falta de espacio, pero aquí tienes algunos de los mejores: Encuentras Power food en varios sitios, como el Es Tap Nou en el centro de Ibiza, donde verduras y frutas del día se convierten en tu zumo o ensalada. Un estupendo sitio nuevo es el Eat is Life en la rotonda de Can Misses – puedes elegir entre un saludable buffet y conseguir fantástica comida a un precio muy razonable. Otro sitio de moda es el Local’s Only en la Plaza del Parque, creativa comida mediterránea a precios razonables. ¿Rápido, fresco, bueno y barato? Comida San Juan cerca del Teatro Pereira. Una recomendación local es el Es Fornas, al lado del centro deportivo entre Ibiza y Puig d’en Valls, Theo prepara la mejor comida casera a un precio fantástico. Lo mismo puede decirse de Es Cami Vell – uno de LOS lugares especiales para el almuerzo – rápido, rico y barato. ¿Pescado fresco?

Hotel La Marina en el puerto de Ibiza. ¿Cocina francesa de excelente calidad? Pastis, a la vuelta de la Plaça del Parque, es un indispensable. ¿Quieres comida india de verdad? Prueba el Ancient People en la Avenida de España, la mejor comida por el mejor precio, ¡tienes que probar el Dhal (lentejas indias)!

Encontrarás comida fusión en Bambuddha Grove en la carretera a San Juan o prueba la Casa Thai 2 en la Avda. Isidoro Macabich/San Antonio – mi favorito, así como el Chang Mai, en Santa Eulalia, cerca del centro. ¿Carne? Es Canto en Sta. Gertrudis tiene los mejores filetes y Can Caus te encantará por las tiras de solomillo de ternera de tu propia barbacoa. ¿El mejor bocadillo de jamón serrano? Bar Costa en Sta. Gertrudis. ¿Una comida perfecta a la orilla del mar? El Café Sidney en el puerto de Sta. Eulalia es la elección perfecta, tambien el Sa Punta en Talmanca. La Luna Nell’ Orto en San Miguel es uno de los restaurantes más auténticos de la isla. En Sta. Eulalia recomendamos el SomiArt de Foc y Fum en el Paseo Marítimo, no sólo comida perfecta, sino también performances en un entorno muy especial – ¡imperdible! Casa Colonial, en la carretera de Sta. Eulalia, es un verdadero refugio, la mejor comida fusión y el mejor servicio. También encuentras carne fantástica en el Km5, en la carretera a San José, en un ambiente único, una pasada. El nuevo Catch ibiza en la carretera Sta. Eulalia antes de llegar a Cana Negreta a la izquierda te ofrece buena comida con mu1sica y cocteles. Un refugio perfecto es el BHS (Bou-

tiqueHotelSalinas) justo después de la rotonda de Salinas, comida de gran calidad en un ambiente bonito - este año tienen un nuevo chef y ofrecen especialidades del norte de España - ¡una visita obligada! El Can Pilot en San Rafael te sirve la mejor “entraña” (corte de carne argentina) de la isla. ¿Excelente comida italiana? Prueba el Tomate Rojo, cerca del Mac Donalds en Figueretas, comida italiana recién hecha para comer o para llevar.

Si quieres comer pollo DE VERDAD tienes que ir a Can Bafalia en la carretera a San Juan, nunca has probado un pollo así, todo casero, desde las patatas hasta las hierbas, pasando por su propio pollo. En San Antonio tenemos que volver a mencionar Kumharas, una y otra vez: la mejor comida fusión condimentada con buena música. ¿Caro pero que merezca la pena? Sa Capella en San Antonio, Las Dos Lunas en la carretera Ibiza – San Antonio o el Ama Lur en la rotonda de Sta. Gertrudis y el nuevo Heart Ibiza del Cirque du Soleil y los hermanos Adria en Botafoch al lado del Casino. Definitivamente tienes que ir al Atzaró en la Ctra. San Juan km15, nunca has visto un jardín más bonito y la comida es excelente. ¿Prefieres la comida rápida? El Huehner Karl en el puerto de Sta. Eulalia para comida alemana, Mister Kebab también en Sta. Eulalia o Albertos Doener en Playa d’en Bossa detrás del Sankeys. ¿La mejor hamburguesa? Discoburger en la c/ Bartolomé Rossello/Ibiza y el Vinyl Burger en Sant Jordi. ¿Cena con puesta de sol incluida? De nuevo y sin duda, Kumharas en San Antonio, las Puertas del Cielo encima de Sta. Inés, Sunset Ashram en Cala Conta y, en algunos meses, Es Boldado en Cala d’Hort con vistas a Es Vedra - o cualquier otra de las numerosas playas en el lado oeste de Ibiza. ¡Sólo tienes que encontrarla tú mismo!

¿FALTA ALGO? Pues claro que sí, lo que la mayoría de vosotros viene buscando: ¡FIESTAAAAAA! Más de 400 bares, 6 discotecas grandes y unas 5 a 10 pequeñas, como mínimo 300 cabinas de DJ esperando que alguien pinche. Las Dalias de camino a San Carlos ofrece buenas fiestas como el Namasté. Nuestro amado Underground, en la carretera Ibiza – San Antonio es otro de nuestros hogares, los mejores beats hechos en casa y fantásticas noches de invitados como Tini and the Gang. El Km5, en la carretera de San José, decididamente tiene el jardín más bonito, aquí te encuentras con toda la peña de Ibiza en el entorno perfecto.

Veto, un auténtico club social con una actitud muy abierta, en la carretera a Pacha. Sansara en la carretera de Sta. Eulalia a San Carlos ofrece una saludable mezcla de live y música electrónica, con Bravofox los martes, Paco Fernandez los jueves y Local Heroes los viernes, además de diferentes eventos todos los sábados. Puro Espíritu de Ibiza. ¡VAMOS A LAS DISCOTECAS! En ningún otro sitio de Europa podrás encontrar una concentración tan grande de macro-discotecas. An event that has the full support of the town hall Ibiza, the council of Ibiza and the associations and federations of Ibicencan traders that is set to stay for many years to come. IF SOMEBODY WOULD HAVE TOLD ME BACK IN 1996 THAT I’D RUN MY OWN MAGAZINE FOR FIFTEEN CONSECUTIVE YEARS I WOULD HAVE PROBABLY LAUGHED AT HIM. It was my first whole year in Ibiza, finally I made it after 14 years dreaming of making a living here. My best friend André who ran the Sunset shop at the Vara de Rey convinced me to come down and open a bar with him and another friend, plus he just made a deal with the guys from Partysan in Germany to start a franchise in Ibiza. Sounded like a masterplan, but I had no idea of what was coming up to me. Both jobs alone would have been enough to get mad, but simultaneously it was simply too much. Running a bar was nothing new to me and i loved it, but the magazine was killing me as nothing was as I had learned in Germany, home of punctuality and reliability - words that simply do not exist in Ibiza. On top we hardly made any money, counting the hours spent in the making and converting it to what was left over after all production costs literally drove rivers of tears to our eyes, besides of the sheer fun we had while doing it. Being an idealist did help to not commit mental suicide, but everything from private life over health to the reasons i came down fell by the wayside. In 1998 I got to know Frank Weyrauther, a young, ambitious and very talented photographer who came from Germany ready to revolutionize the way nightlife was shot in Ibiza. We immediately clicked as he has the same idealism, the same urge to give 110% whenever it’s needed, characteristics you definitely need to do this job, and we never stopped ever since.

But, as time went by, the energy invested did not pay off in its (sadly) true meaning, so after four years we decided to stop running the magazine and simultaneously sold the bar, as being an alcoholic zombie whiter than white with weekly changing colored hair (Thanks Antonio B!) was not the most desirable I had in mind for my future. But what to do next?

After calling all our clients - which did not take too much time as there weren’t so many - there was one that told me I can not stop running a magazine and offered me a flight ticket to Stuttgart to talk with him about something he had in mind. Arriving there he offered me to sponsor my own magazine for three years, after that we would make a cut and see if it’s worth continuing. There are some opportunities in your life you should not miss, and this was definitely one of them. He was running a successful advertising agency in Stuttgart and had many years of experience in this world of its own - you must know that running a magazine is 52

not only looking for great content no, you have to as well create a certain profile to be able to get clients to advertise their brand or sponsor or collaborate in any monetary way so the costs can be covered and, if you are lucky, you can pay the production costs in the beginning.

So we started with an incredible run of 100.000 copies, distributing the mag in Ibiza and all over Germany plus Switzerland, Austria and a few more countries, and the production costs exploded. Two years later, with the introduction of the Euro and a serious crisis hitting the whole advertising industry, the agency of my mentor went down and he told me he could not continue sponsoring the magazine - that was two years after we started running it - but he as well told me I would not have to pay back the money he invested - a gesture I will never forget but appreciate for ever.

So I was left with my own magazine, no money but free to do whatever came into my mind.

Hooked on the rush to continue what I loved most I decided to liquidate a life insurance so I could continue developing the magazine, and all involved were up to invest their time and knowledge for nothing but the reward of being part of it. Without this idealism it would not have been possible to go on, and some of them are still part of it, most importantly Frank, who became the Creative Director responsible for the whole image containing graphics and photography, plus another handful of freelancers that stand by whenever they are needed – 24/7.

Endless nights of finishing the magazine, up to today Frank and myself lock ourselves in for a whole weekend after collecting all content to give birth to each edition, regardless of the weeks of preproduction those days are like a mental meltdown. Nowadays it is easier to get it all together, modern technologies help to do the impossible, back in the old days the ‘Internet’ just started so I literally had to fly to the printer with a box full of Zip disks with 250 MB each containing all images and layout, praying that all of them would open correctly. First we printed in Germany, then - to save money - I had the ‘great’ idea of trying a printer in the Czech Republic, the result was an issue that had the wrong colors, a crap binding and the overall costs were far higher as some of the clients justifiably complained about their ads looking crap so I had to drop the price. Another frenzy was the adventure of getting 10.000 copies transported to Ibiza for each edition with the truckers association in France always being on strike in August, making it impossible to get the mags down here in time. I remember one

time the whole edition was stuck for almost a week so I drove up there trying to get at least some of the mags out of the truck but they refused to hand them over… And still our most faithful clients stayed with us! Finally we found some good printers in Spain, today we print in Barcelona and are more than happy with the result. Btw. you can find all people ever involved in our editorial on page four and five at the bottom.

Enough said about the history, let’s drop some anecdotes from the last fifteen years… already in the Partysan I started to do the double page with the collage containing all heads Frank spots during his endless nights all over the island, resulting in one of the most popular pages we ever did, counting them roughly there must be around 10.000 headshots. Talking numbers, Frank shoots an average of 150.000 pictures each season, and not only that, he files them with name, venue, style etc. which takes him ages to organize them, all in high resolution. Another great number is the readers we reached, each edition is read by more than two people as most are taken home to be stored as collector’s items, making a total of more than a million readers since day one. It might not sound a lot to you, to us it is incredible as we still are an independent magazine run by a few enthusiasts who believe in the freedom of expression. Some of our clients are with us from day one, faithful to the bone, giving us the possibility to maintain our independence, speaking out what we think without concessions. We never ever offended anybody personally, there is a fine line between speaking up and denunciating, and we never published any offensive pictures, knowing that once it is printed you can not take it back as you can do online nowadays.

Another great topic are our ‘Redeyes 2 Redneck’, meaning the smoked giving advise to the burned – we posted more than 500 quotes, most of them handcrafted and collected from collaborators all over the globe. We like to feature new and upcoming artists, e.g. we were the first island magazine to write about Diynamic and Solomun back in 2009, introduced Cocoon to Ibiza or featured Luciano before he played his first gig on Ibiza. Another great anecdote is the interview with Ricardo Villalobos, we sat down for 4 hours to record it, and after writing it down I realized I wrote more than 6.000 words so I had to cut it down to less than 2.000 – what a crime...

With the years lots of other magazines were published, the market got very rough and we have our issues to maintain our independence as we are no high-gloss magazine with big sponsors but, as mentioned before, we have our faithful clients, and the one or other still appreciates the fact that we are worth reading, mixing nightlife, music, tourist information and fashionable content with topics of great interest, be it political, spiritual or just something that enhances your life in any way, or simply the Spirit of Ibiza, which actually was all around us when we first named it.

We can proudly say we have never copied anybody but got copied quite a few times, I take that as a compliment and a reason to keep the line as it is, and last but not at all least thank you to keep looking out for the latest issue. I know it is hard to find as they are taken the moment they get distributed which is a good sign, who wants to be in a fanzine that lies around.

SI ALLÁ POR EL AÑO 1996 ALGUIEN ME HUBIERA DICHO QUE ESTARÍA A CARGO DE MI PROPIA REVISTA DURANTE QUINCE AÑOS CONSECUTIVOS, PROBABLEMENTE ME HUBIESE REÍDO DE ÉL. Aquel era mi primer año entero en Ibiza, por fin lo había conseguido después de 14 años soñando en ganarme la vida aquí. Mi mejor amigo, André, quien dirigía la tienda Sunset en Vara del Rey, me convenció para que bajara y abriese un bar junto con él y otro amigo. André, además, acababa de cerrar un trato con los chicos de Partysan, en Alemania, para abrir una franquicia en Ibiza. Sonaba como el plan perfecto, pero yo no tenía ni idea de lo que se me venía encima. Por separado, ambos trabajos eran lo suficiente para volver loco a cualquiera, pero los dos al mismo tiempo eran simplemente demasiado. Llevar un bar no era nada nuevo para mí y además era algo que me encantaba, pero la revista me estaba matando, ya que nada era como lo que yo había aprendido en Alemania, el hogar de la puntualidad y de la formalidad –palabras que simplemente no existen en Ibiza. Por encima, apenas ganábamos ningún dinero. Teniendo en cuenta las horas que pasábamos en la creación y convirtiéndolas a lo que quedaba después de todos los costes de producción, literalmente hacía que nos echáramos a llorar, a pesar de la auténtica diversión que era para ambos realizar la revista. Ser un idealista ayudaba mucho a la hora de no cometer suicidio mental, pero todo –desde la vida privada y la salud hasta las razones por las que me había venido- se quedaron a un lado. En 1998 conocí a Frank Weyrauther, un joven y ambicioso fotógrafo con mucho talento que había venido desde Alemania listo para revolucionar el modo en que se fotografiaba la vida nocturna en Ibiza.

Conectamos de inmediato - ya que él poseía el mismo idealismo, la misma necesidad de dar el 110% siempre que sea necesario, características que indudablemente son necesarias para realizar este trabajo - y desde aquel primer momento no hemos dejado de conectar nunca .

Sin embargo, a medida que pasaba el tiempo, la energía invertida no compensaba en su (tristemente) verdadero sentido. Así que después de cuatro años decidimos parar de editar la revista y, simultáneamente, vender el bar, ya que ser un zombie alcohólico más blanco que un fantasma y con el pelo de un color diferente cada semana (¡gracias Antonio B!) no era lo más deseable ni tampoco lo que yo tenía en mente para mi futuro. Pero la pregunta era: ¿qué hacer ahora?

Después de llamar a todos nuestros clientes – lo cual no nos llevó mucho tiempo ya que no teníamos demasiados – hubo uno que me dijo que no podía dejar de editar la revista y me ofreció un billete de avión a Stuttgart para hablar con él y discutir lo que tenía en mente. A mi llegada, me ofreció financiar mi propia revista durante tres años, después de eso podríamos ver los beneficios obtenidos y decidir si valía la pena continuar. En tu vida hay algunas oportunidades que no deberías dejar pasar y esta, sin duda, era una de ellas. Él llevaba una exitosa agencia de publicidad en Stuttgart y tenía muchos años de experiencia en este mundillo – debes saber que llevar una revista no es simplemente buscar buen contenido, no, también tienes que crear un cierto perfil para poder conseguir clientes que quieran anunciar su marca en la revista o que la quieran financiar o colaborar monetariamente de cualquier otro modo, para cubrir así los costes de edición y, si tienes suerte, para que puedas pagar los gastos de producción al comienzo.

Así que empezamos con una increíble edición de 100.000 copias, distribuyendo la revista en Ibiza y por toda Alemania, además de Suiza, Austria y algunos países más, y los costes de producción se dispararon. Dos años después, con la introducción del euro y la grave crisis que afectaba a toda la industria de la publicidad, la agencia de mi mentor se fue a pique y este me dijo que no podía continuar financiando la revista. Eso fue dos años después de haber empezado a editarla. Lo que también me dijo es que no tenía que devolverle el dinero que él había invertido hasta el momento –un gesto que no olvidaré jamás y que siempre le agradeceré. Así que me había quedado con mi propia revista, sin dinero, pero con la libertad de poder hacer lo que me apeteciera.

Enganchado al subidón de seguir haciendo lo que más me gustaba, decidí liquidar un seguro de vida para poder seguir desarrollando la revista. Además, todos los implicados estaban dispuestos a invertir su tiempo y su conocimiento a cambio de nada más que la recompensa de formar parte de ello. Sin este idealismo no habría sido posible continuar. Algunos de ellos todavía forman parte de todo ello, sobre todo Frank, quien se convirtió en el director creativo, responsable de la imagen al completo -gráfica y fotografía-, además de un puñado más de freelancers que están disponibles y dispuestos a trabajar siempre que se los necesite - 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana.

Noches interminables terminando la revista, hasta el día de hoy Frank y yo nos hemos encerrado durante un fin de semana entero después de haber recopilado todo el contenido para dar a luz a cada edición. Sin importar las semanas de preproducción, aquellos días eran como un colapso mental. Hoy en día es más fácil montarlo todo; La tecnología moderna ayuda a conseguir lo imposible. En los viejos tiempos, ‘internet’ acababa de empezar, así que yo tenía que literalmente volar a la impresora con una caja repleta de disquetes de 250 MB cada uno, conteniendo las imágenes y el layout, rezando para que todos se abrieran sin problemas. La primera vez imprimimos en Alemania, después –para ahorrar dinero- tuve la ‘brillante’ idea de probar una impresora en la República Checa. El resultado fue una edición con los colores incorrectos, una porquería de encuadernación y cuyos costes en general fueron mucho mayores, ya que algunos de los clientes se quejaron y con razón, porque sus anuncios se veían una mierda, por lo que me vi obligado a bajarles el precio.

Otra locura fue la aventura de conseguir transportar las 10.000 copias de cada edición hasta Ibiza, con la asociación de camioneros en Francia siempre en huelga en agosto, haciendo que fuera imposible que las revistas llegaran a tiempo. Recuerdo una ocasión en la que la edición completa se quedó atrapada durante casi una semana, así que allá me fui yo, conduciendo hasta allí para intentar conseguir por lo menos algunas de las revistas, pero se negaron a pasármelas… ¡Y aún así nuestros clientes más fieles se quedaron con nosotros! Al final encontramos unas buenas impresoras en España. Hoy en día imprimimos en Barcelona y estamos más que contentos con el resultado. Por cierto, puedes encontrar a toda la gente que está involucrada en nuestra editorial al pie de página de las páginas cuatro y cinco.

Pero ya está bien de hablar sobre la historia de la revista, vamos a contar algunas anécdotas de estos quince años… Estando ya en el Partysan, empecé a hacer la doble página con el collage con 56

todas las cabezas que Frank fotografía durante sus interminables noches a lo largo de toda la isla, resultando en una de las páginas más populares que hemos hecho jamás. En un cálculo aproximado, deben ser unas 10.000 fotos de rostro. Hablando de números, Frank dispara una media de 150.000 fotos cada temporada y no sólo eso, las archiva con nombre, lugar, estilo, etc., lo que hace que le lleve una eternidad organizarlas, todas en alta resolución. Otro gran número es el de los lectores a los que llegamos; Cada edición la leen más de dos personas, ya que la mayoría de las revistas se llevan a casa para convertirse en un artículo de colección, haciendo un total de más de dos millones de lectores desde el primer día. Puede que a ti no te parezca demasiado, pero para nosotros es increíble, ya que todavía somos una revista independiente editada por un puñado de entusiastas que creen en la libertad de expresión. Algunos de nuestros clientes están con nosotros desde el primer día, fieles hasta la médula, proporcionándonos la oportunidad de mantener nuestra independencia, decir lo que pensamos sin concesiones. Nunca jamás hemos ofendido personalmente a nadie. Existe una delgada línea entre expresar la opinión y denunciar. Nunca hemos publicado ninguna fotografía ofensiva, sabiendo que una vez impresa no puedes retirarla, como sí es posible hacerlo en internet hoy en día.

Otro gran tópico es nuestro “Redeye 2 Redneck,” título que se refiere a los fumados dando consejos a los quemados – hemos publicado más de 500 citas, la mayoría de ellas elaboradas y recopiladas por nuestros colaboradores a lo largo y ancho del mundo entero. Nos gusta presentar a nuevos artistas con gran porvenir. Por ejemplo, fuimos la primera revista de la isla que escribió sobre Diynamic y Solomun, allá en el año 2009; Introdujimos a Coocon en Ibiza y presentamos a Luciano antes de su primera actuación en Ibiza. Otra estupenda anécdota es la entrevista con Ricardo Villalobos. Nos sentamos durante 4 horas para grabarla y después de ponerla por escrito nos dimos cuenta de que había escrito más de 6.000 palabras, así que tendría que cortarla para que tuviera menos de 2.000 - ¡qué crimen!

Con los años, se han publicado montones de revistas más, el mercado se ha endurecido mucho y hemos tenido nuestros problemas para mantener nuestra independencia, ya que no somos una revista de moda con grandes patrocinadores. Más bien, como ya he mencionado antes, tenemos nuestros clientes fieles y algunas que otras personas todavía aprecian el hecho de que merece la pena leer nuestra revista, con su mezcla de vida nocturna, música, información turística y contenido novedoso con temas de gran interés, bien sea político, espiritual o simplemente algo que de alguna manera mejore tu vida, o sencillamente el espíritu de Ibiza, el cual nos rodeaba en un primer momento cuando le pusimos nombre a la revista.

Podemos decir con orgullo que nunca hemos copiado a nadie, pero que nos han copiado unas cuantas veces. Yo me lo tomo como un cumplido y como un motivo para mantener la línea tal y como está. Y por último, pero no por ello menos importante, gracias por seguir buscando el último número. Sé que es difícil de encontrar, ya que desaparecen en cuanto se distribuyen, lo cual es una buena señal, ¿quién quiere estar en un fanzine que está tirado por ahí?

about the year 1986 when I started to share the booth with Tony Catany where I then would play for more than 25 years. As you know my music not only sounded in Pacha, I had a ten years residency in Café del Mar and I played all the clubs on the island.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT JOAN RIBAS, FAITHFUL LOVER OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC OVER MORE THAN TWO DECADES BEING A RESIDENT DJ OF SOME OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS BOOTHS OF THIS ISLAND, WHO NOT LONG AGO DECIDED TO DEDICATE A GOOD PART OF HIS LIFE TO POLITICS. SOUNDS LIKE A FAIRY TALE BUT IT IS REAL, ON TOP HIS COMMITMENT LED HIM TO BECOME THE NEW DEPUTY OF THE MAYOR OF IBIZA.

HOW WAS THE ISLAND IN THOSE FIRST YEARS BEING IBICENCO?

JOAN, IT IS OUR UTMOST PLEASURE TO HAVE YOU IN DUB, BEFORE ALL OTHER CONGRATULATIONS FOR WHAT YOU ACHIEVED – AND WHAT IS THERE TO COME. FIRST OF ALL TELL US WHO YOU ARE FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW YOU YET. YOU ARE IBICENCO NO? Thank you Andy, yes I am Eivissenc, born in the centre of Ibiza with various generations of ancestors in Eivissa. I grew up playing in the port, in Los Molinos and up in d’Alt Vila. My parents fatherwise had a bakery just behind the Teatro de Pereyra, and the father of my mother, my grandpa Pedro, was a renown car mechanic, one of the first ones to drive a car in Eivissa, a car with which he drove great personalities to the island in the middle of the 20st century.

HOW DID YOU COME TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC, I IMAGINE YOU WITNESSED THE FIRST MOMENTS OF THIS MOVEMENT AS YOU ALREADY LIVE IN IT FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES. For me there is no difference between electronic music and any other form of music. There is only good or bad music. But I understand what you mean, how did I get to work in a club playing music. When I began there was no electronic music how we understand it today, a lot of the tracks were made to sound in the clubs but it was not produced on computers as it is today. Already with 13 or 14 years I selected the music to be played in my birthdays oand the ones of my friends, with 14 I went to see how the only radio program worth listening was done life and direct, the legendary ONDA VIVA. Then with 16 I started to work in the infamous FLIP MUSIC vinyl shop, selling imported vinyls – knowing your passion for vinyl Andy I am sure you would have loved this shop.

After the vinyl shop I managed to play in the bars of the port and the Calle de la Virgen, such as Akelarre, Bar 22, La Nada, Atlantis, BeBop… I think I played them all. One day I accompanied a DJ colleague to talk to Piti Urgell, the director of Pacha, he asked for a job there and I ended up being his assistant. We are talking 60

The scene was completely different, there were only four serious big clubs: Pacha, Ku, Amnesia and Es Paradis. In the first seven years of my career DJs didn’t appear on the posters, the parties were the classic ones, White Party, Full Moon etc. Most of the people came without knowing who played. All residents played every night, there were hardly any guest DJs. 20 YEARS LATER A LOT OF THINGS HAVE CHANGED AS HAS THIS SCENE – IT MUTATED INTO A MULTIMILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS MOVING LOTS OF MONEY TOWARDS THE HANDS OF A FEW. I THINK A PRODUCER NEEDS A LOT OF IDEALISM NOWADAYS TO KEEP GOING BECAUSE THE SAME THING HAPPENS, FEW MAKE A LOT OF MONEY, AND THE SAME HAPPENS WITH DJS. AS WE KNOW BEING A RESIDENT DJ IN IBIZA IS PLAYING FOR COINS, NOT NOTES, FOR IDEALISM, NOT FAME. HOW DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT? The whole music business, electronic or organic, is for the most an idealistic profession as you say, big money is always a result of marketing, not quality. That does not mean that all those who make a lot of money are bad professionals, but without marketing they obviously wouldn’t make as much money.

THAT IS A GOOD COMPARISON WITH ‘REAL’ LIFE TOO – AS I READ IN THE PROGRAM OF ‘GUAMYEM’ – IT IS NOT A POLITICAL PARTY AS THE OTHERS BUT A UNION OF PEOPLE READY TO CREATE A DIFFERENT FORM OF POLITICS, FROM THE CITIZEN FOR THE CITIZEN, IS THAT CORRECT? Guanyem Ibiza is a different political party. We call ourselves a party because the system demands it to be able to participate in its institutions, but our operating system is very different to the other parties. In Guanyem we got a lot of people from other political camps, but they participate as individual persons with one voice and one vote in our assemblies, deciding on what has to be done. Any citizen can come to our assemblies having his voice, we don’t ask anybody to affiliate, nobody pays to be a member as we do not have any members. Running costs and other things to be paid are shared between all of us, everybody puts something, like this we can cover it all. We did all our electoral campaign like this. We spent 6.000 Euros in total, that’s the cost any of the big parties spends in one of those dinners they organize for their sympathisers.

BEING A FOREIGNER LIVING FOR 19 YEARS IN IBIZA THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND I DEDICATED A BIG PART OF MY STAY TO EDITING MAGAZINES REFLECTING THE ESSENCE OF IBIZA, MEANS FOR ME THE LIVING TOGETHER OF PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE, OF ALL CLASSES AND ANY FORMATION IN A FREE MANNER, WITH SOME CONVENTIONS BUT ALWAYS IN A LIBERAL WAY. ULTIMATELY THOSE CONVENTIONS HAVE BEEN SACRIFICED FOR THE WELL-BEING OF A FEW ON COST OF THE MAJORITY, BE IT IN CULTURAL, TOURISTIC OR SOCIAL ISSUES, EVEN IN THE MOST COMMON WAY OF LIFE. HOW IS THIS TO BE CHANGED? In my opinion we have to change the type, we are moving towards a Miami or Las Vegas model, and this is not adecuate. Eivissa is different and needs to maintain its position. Let me give you an example: 15 years ago we had a third of the number of tourists coming as we have now, and the per-capita income was the highest or second in the whole Spain. Now we got three times more people coming and we are seventh or eigth. What does that mean? Well, it’s obvious, the richness generated in Ibiza is very badly distributed. A few take almost all, and the majority less and less. And the worst is this wealth is extracted from our natural resources, if we keep going that way we will run out soon. We are an island, a territory with physical limits that we cannot overrun, and the equilibrium of our ecosystem is primordial for our existence.

ARE YOU NOT AFRAID OF ENTERING A POLITICAL SYSTEM THAT HAS ITS OWN RULES, IF I THINK OF E.G. BARACK OBAMA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, WHO FOR MANY PEOPLE WAS THE MAN WHO COULD HAVE CHANGED THE WORLD BUT NOW, IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS SECOND MANDATE, HE SEEMS TO BE A PRESIDENT LIKE ALL THE OTHERS? Yes it does frighten me, but I don’t pretend to change the world.

All I want is to induce small changes to achieve a better life for my fellow citizens. Small changes sum up to a big one. Barack Obama is a product of marketing as are the DJs we talked about before. One thing is what your advertising campaign promises, the other is what you will do, or be able to do.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN OBJECTIVES KNOWING THAT NOT ALL THAT STINKS IS A TURD BUT ALSO NOT ALL THAT SHIMMERS IS A DIAMOND? My focus is on the social aspects. I am deputy of the mayor of Ibiza and councilor of social affluence, means I plead for the aim that there is not a single person left without shelter and food on this island of Mega Yates and 50.000 Dollar dinners. Sounds wrong, but that is what’s happening. Social justice, attention for the immigrants, access to health care, to education. Those are my goals.

Coming back to your passion for music knowing that Ibiza has a unique position on a global scale for its electronic music scene, what are the changes that have to be introduced to preserve its charme for all lovers that still come to Ibiza to celebrate this. I read you don’t want to see Ibiza converting into another Miami or Las Vegas, this surely was you speaking, no?

That’s right, as I said before, Miami or Las Vegas can not be our role model. We have to maintain our leadership without converting into a mega party 24/7 where everything is allowed everywhere. If we do not retrieve the former balance between peace 62

and party we had 20 years ago we risk to become the victim of our own success. If we keep following this model of over-exploitation we risk that the residents abandon the island – fact that is already occurring. And people come to party without really taking part in the island’s identity, leading to us finally disappearing as a village. Equilibrium, that is the word for me.

WITH ALL YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN POLITICS, WILL WE STILL BE ABLE TO ENJOY YOUR SETS IN ANY BOOTH IN IBIZA? Hehehe… well, for the moment I took some time-off to dedicate myself to my new occupation, but I will never abandon music, because music is not a profession, it’s my life.

A QUESTION I ASKED A LOT OF PEOPLE BUT ASKING YOU IS OF SPECIAL INTEREST FOR ME, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT DUB MAGAZINE? Dub mag is a classic under the magazines being edited in Ibiza, lots did imitate you, means you are doing something very well.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST – HOW IS YOUR PERFECT DAY? I believe more in perfect moments then in perfect days. My perfect moment is when I select one of my records and play it on a deck. Like we did before, listening from beginning to end whilst holding the cover in our hands looking at it as we have never seen it before, then flipping to the b-side. As you well know these are 40 unbeatable minutes, a pleasure that got lost with digital music.

ESTE ES EL CASO DE JOAN RIBAS, FIEL AMANTE DE LA MÚSICA ELECTRÓNICA POR MAS DE DOS DÉCADAS SIENDO DJ RESIDENTE DE ALGUNAS DE LAS CABINAS MÁS EXCLUSIVAS DE ESTA ISLA, QUE HACE POCOS AÑOS HA DECIDIDO DEDICAR UNA BUENA PARTE DE SU TIEMPO A LA POLÍTICA. SUENA COMO UN CUENTO PERO ES REAL, Y ADEMÁS SU DEDICACIÓN HA DADO FRUTO PARA AHORA ENCONTRARSE EN EL PUESTO DE TENIENTE DEL ALCALDE DE IBIZA.

JOAN, ES UN PLACER TENERTE EN LA DUB, ENHORABUENA POR LO QUE HAS LOGRADO - Y POR LO QUE ESTA POR VENIR. PRIMERO CUÉNTANOS TU HISTORIA POR LOS QUE NO TE CONOCEN. ERES IBICENCO, NO? Gracias Andy, si si... soy eivissenc, nacido en el centro de la ciudad y con varias generaciones de antepasados de Eivissa. Me crie jugando por la Marina, Los Molinos y Dalt Vila. Mi familia por parte de padre tenian una panaderia pasteleria justo detrás del Pereyra, y el padre de mi madre, mi abuelo Pedro, era un conocido mecanico de coches de Ibiza, uno de los primeros en tener coche en Eivissa, un coche en el que habia llevado a grandes personajes

de los que llegaban a nuestra isla la primera mitad del siglo XX. COMO HAS LLEGADO A LA MÚSICA ELECTRÓNICA, ME IMAGINO QUE HAS VIVIDO EL EMPIEZO DE ESE MOVIMIENTO DESDEL PRINCIPIO, YA QUE LLEVAS MAS DE DOS DÉCADAS METIDO EN ESE MUNDO. Yo no distingo entre música electrónica y cualquier otro tipo de música. Para mi hay buena musica y mala musica. Pero entiendo que te refieres a como llegue a trabajar en un club, a poner música especial para discoteca. Bien, cuando comencé no era electrónica en el sentido que lo entendemos ahora, mucho de lo que se pinchaba era música hecha concretamente para sonar en las discotecas, pero no se producía con ordenadores como se produce ahora. Con doce y trece años ya seleccionaba la musica que se ponia en las fiestas de mis cumpleaños y los de mis amigos, con 14 comence a ir a la radio a escuchar como se hacia en directo el unico programa de musica de calidad que se hacia en la isla, el legendario ONDA VIVA. Con dieciseis comence a trabajar los veranos en la mitica FLIP MUSIC, una increible tienda de vinilo de importacion que, con lo que te gustan a ti los vinilos Andy, te hubiera encantado conocer. De la tienda de discos pase a pinchar en bares del puerto y la calle de la Virgen como Akelarre, Bar 22, La Nada, Atlantis, BeBop..... creo que pinche en todos.

Un dia acompañe a un amigo dj a hablar con Piti Urgell el director de Pacha, iba a pedirle trabajo, y al final entro el como dj principal y yo como ayudante. Estamos hablando de 1986, comence ayudando a mi amigo Tony Catany en la cabina de Pacha, y ahí me quede durante mas de 25 años. Como sabés no solo en Pacha ha sonado mi música, durante diez años tuve una residencia semanal en Café Del Mar y he puesto discos en todas las discotecas de la isla.

COMO ERA LA ISLA EN ESOS PRIMEROS PASOS DE LA ESCENA SIENDO IBICENCO? La escena en la isla era muy diferente, mucho. Solo eramos cuatro grandes discotecas importantes: Pacha, Ku, Amnesia y Es Paradis.

Mis primeros seis o siete años como residente no aparecíamos los djs en los posters de las discotecas, se hacian las tipicas fiestas de blanco, luna llena, etc., pero mucha gente venia sin saber el nombre del dj que ponia la música. Todos los residentes pinchabamos cada noche, muy pocas veces habia djs invitados.

HOY, 20 AÑOS DESPUÉS, MUCHAS COSAS HAN CAMBIADO, ENTRE ELLAS TAMBIÉN ESA ESCENA - SE HA CONVERTIDO EN UN NEGOCIO MULTIMILLONARIO, MOVIENDO MUCHÍSIMO DINERO PERO EN MANOS DE UNOS POCOS. CREO QUE HOY EN DÍA ALGUIEN QUE PRODUCE MÚSICA ELECTRÓNICA TIENE QUE SER MUY IDEALISTA DE SEGUIR POR DELANTE PORQUE EL DINERO SE REPARTE ENTRE UNOS POCOS, Y LO MISMO PASA CON LOS DJS. YA SABEMOS QUE SIENDO DJ RESIDENTE EN IBIZA SIGNIFICA DE PINCHAR POR MONEDAS, NO BILLETES, POR IDEALISMO, NO FAMA. COMO LO VES? El mundo de la música, sea electrónica o sea orgánica, para la mayoria es una opción vocacional e idealista, como dices tu, el dinero a lo grande, las grandes sumas, siempre son cuestion de marketing más que de calidad. No quiero decir con esto que muchos de los que ganan grandes cantidades sean malos profesionales, pero sin el marketing no ganarian lo que ganan evidentemente.

ME PARECE UNA BUENA COMPARACIÓN CON LO QUE ESTA OCUR-

RIENDO EN LA VIDA ‘REAL’ TAMBIÉN - COMO HE LEÍDO EN EL PROGRAMA DE ‘GUANYEM’, NO ES UN PARTIDO POLÍTICO COMO LOS DEMÁS SINO UNA UNIÓN DE GENTE DISPUESTO DE CREAR UNA POLÍTICA DIFERENTE, DESDE LOS CIUDADANOS Y POR LOS CIUDADANOS, ES CORRECTO? Guanyem Eivissa es un partido politico diferente. Somos un partido politico porque el sistema nos obliga a organizarnos para poder entrar en las instituciones, pero nuestro funcionamiento es muy diferente al de los partidos tradicionales. En Guanyem hay mucha gente que pertenece a otros partidos politicos, pero estan con nosotros como personas individuales, con una voz y un voto en nuestras asambleas, que son las que deciden lo que se debe hacer. Cualquier ciudadano puede venir a nuestras asambleas y tener su voz, no pedimos que nadie se afilie, nadie paga por ser miembro de nuestro partido porque no tenemos miembros.

Cuando surgen gastos o tenemos que pagar alguna cosa lo hacemos entre todos, cada uno pone un poco y asi lo cubrimos.

Nuestra campaña electoral la hicimos asi. Nos gastamos en total menos de 6.000 euros, lo que le cuesta a uno de los grandes partidos una cena de esas que hacen para sus simpatizantes.

SIENDO EXTRANJERO VIVIENDO 19 AÑOS EN IBIZA TODO EL AÑO Y HE DEDICADO BUENA PARTE DE MI ESTANCIA EN EDITAR REVISTAS POR REFLEJAR LO QUE ES LA ESENCIA DE IBIZA, COSA QUE PARA MI ES LA CONVIVENCIA DE GENTE DE TODO EL MUNDO, DE TODAS CLASES Y DE TODAS FORMACIONES DE FORMA LIBRE, CON CONVENCIONES PERO SIEMPRE DE FORMA LIBERAL. ÚLTIMAMENTE ESAS CONVENCIONES HAN SIDO SACRIFICADO POR LO BIEN DE UNOS POCOS A COSTE DE LA MAYORÍA, SEA EN EL CAMPO CULTURAL, TURÍSTICO, SOCIAL O HASTA EN LA VIDA MAS COTIDIANA. COMO SE PUEDE CAMBIAR ESTO? En mi opinión se ha de cambiar el modelo. Estamos yendo hacia un modelo tipo Miami o Las Vegas, y no es el adecuado. Eivissa es diferente y tiene que seguir siéndolo. Te voy a poner un ejemplo: hace 15 años venían a la isla una tercera parte de los turistas que vienen ahora, y la renta per capita que disfrutábamos los ibicencos era la mayor, o la segunda, de España. Ahora vienen tres veces más y estamos los séptimos u octavos. ¿Que significa esto? pues es evidente: que la riqueza que se produce en Ibiza se esta repartiendo muy mal. Unos pocos se llevan mucho, y la mayoría cada vez menos. Además, lo peor, es que esta riqueza la estan extrayendo de nuestros recursos naturales, que si seguimos este camino agotaremos pronto. Somos una isla, un territorio con unos limites fisicos que no se pueden superar, y el equilibrio de nuestro ecosistema es primordial para nuestra subsistencia.

NO TE DA MIEDO ENTRAR EN UN SISTEMA POLÍTICO QUE TIENE SUS PROPIAS REGLAS, PENSANDO POR EJEMPLO EN EL PRESIDENTE DE ESTADOS UNIDOS BARACK OBAMA QUE POR MUCHOS ERA LA PERSONA QUE PUEDE CAMBIAR EL MUNDO Y AHORA, EN MITAD DE SU SEGUNDA LEGISLATURA, PARECE QUE ES UN PRESIDENTE NO MAS QUE OTROS ANTES DE EL? Si que asusta si, pero no pretendo cambiar el mundo. Lo unico que quiero es ir promoviendo pequeños cambios que vayan haciendo la vida mejor para mis conciudadanos. Muchos pequeños cambios crean uno enorme. Barack Obama, al igual que los djs que ganan tanto dinero de los que hablábamos antes, es tambien producto del marketing. Una cosa es lo que tu campaña de publicidad promete y otra lo que vas a hacer, o poder hacer.

CUALES SON TUS METAS PRINCIPALES EN TU INVOLUCRAMIÉNTO POLÍTICO, SABIENDO QUE NO TODO LO QUE HUELE MAL ES UNA PORQUERÍA PERO TAMPOCO TODO LO QUE BRILLA ES UN DIAMANTE? Mi foco esta en los aspectos sociales. Soy teniente de alcalde y concejal de Bienestar Social, lo que significa luchar para que en esta isla de megayates y cenas de 50,000 euros no se quede ni una sola persona sin un techo o sin comida. Parece mentira, pero esto esta pasando. Justicia social, atencion a los inmigrantes, acceso a la sanidad, a la educacion. Estas son mis metas.

VOLVIENDO A TU PASIÓN POR LA MÚSICA Y SABIENDO QUE IBIZA TIENE UNA POSICIÓN MUY IMPORTANTE A NIVEL MUNDIAL POR SU ESCENA ELECTRÓNICA, CUALES SON LAS COSAS QUE DEBEN CAMBIARSE PARA PODER MANTENER SU ENCANTO POR TODOS AMANTES QUE SIGUEN VINIENDO A IBIZA PARA CELEBRARLO? HE LEÍDO QUE NO QUERÉIS QUE IBIZA SE CONVIERTE EN OTRO MIAMI O LAS VEGAS, SEGURO QUE ESA FRASE SALIÓ DE TU MANO, NO? Asi es, como he dicho antes Miami o Las Vegas no puede ser nuestro modelo. Hemos de poder seguir manteniendo el liderato mundial sin llegar a los extremos de convertir la isla en una megafiesta de 24horas donde todo este permitido en todos los lugares. Si no recuperamos el antiguo equilibrio entre PAZ y FIESTA que teniamos 20 años atrás corremos el peligro de ser victimas de nuestro propio éxito. Si seguimos este modelo de sobreexplotacion corremos el peligro, ya esta sucediendo, de que los residentes abandonen la isla, que solo seamos un lugar donde viene la gente a pegarse la fiesta sin involucrase realmente en lo que es la identidad real de la isla, de desaparecer como pueblo.

Equilibrio, esta es para mi la palabra.

CON TODO TU INVOLUCRAMIÉNTO EN LA POLÍTICA, VAMOS A PODER SEGUIR DISFRUTANDO ESCUCHANDOTE EN ALGUNAS CABINAS DE IBIZA? Hehehe... bueno, de momento me he tomado un tiempo para asentarme en mi nueva ocupación, pero nunca abandonare la musica, porque la musica no es solo una profesion, es mi vida.

PREGUNTA QUE HE HECHO A MUCHOS PERO DE TI ME INTERESA ESPECIALMENTE, QUE PIENSAS DEL DUB MAGAZINE? Dub Magazine es un clásico de las revistas que se editan en Ibiza, muchos os han imitado, lo que significa que lo haceis muy bien.

Y POR ÚLTIMO, COMO ES TU DÍA PERFECTO? Creo más en los momentos perfectos que en los dias perfectos. Mi momento perfecto es cuando elijo uno de mis vinilos y lo pincho en el plato. Como hacíamos antes, esuchándolo de principio a fin mientras mantienes la portada entre las manos y la miras como si nunca la hubieras visto, y luego darle la vuelta y escuchar la cara B. Como bien sabes son cuarenta minutos insuperables. Este es un placer que se ha perdido con la música digital.

HELLO IGOR, LONG TIME NO SPEAK, GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK IN DUB. WE NEVER LOST SIGHT, AND NOW IS THE PERFECT MOMENT TO MEET AGAIN. FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW YOU, TELL US HOW YOU GOT TO CREATE IBIZA SONICA? Sonica was launched nine years ago with very little resources but a lot of illusion. Me personally i came from working for radio at the Costa del Sol, then in Ibiza for Cadena 100 and Global Radio.

We decided to create our own platform and break up the common rules of radio. Not broadcasting publicity and working out our own sound we soon gained the support of the industry. Not only from DJs and promoters but the proper listener won favor with it, beating all our expectations.

Ibiza Sonica is a media occupying its part in the life of Ibiza throughout the last (almost) ten years. About seven years ago the internet converted us into an international media, and five years ago, with the introduction of the social networks, we got to know our listeners. We evolved every single day... in our programmation and our business model. Work in progress every day.

WHO FORMS PART OF THE ‘SONICA’ FAMILY? My friend and partner Miguel Valverde who is the shadow worker.

He who really cares about the development and structure of the radio. An impeccable professional who is a pleasure to work with.

My wife Cristina takes care of the image, develops the campaigns and creates new concepts, crucial elements of the radio. Shams Faure is the coordinator of all stations, the keystone to keep the wheels turning. Karlos Sense inserts his musical vision and his voice into the radio. Our technicians always in progress sweating to make it all sound. Patricia dedicates her part to the social networks overwiewing our sonic universe and Sandra brings in her vision to develop new projects. Matthias and Becky are our voices for live broadcasts, Ernesto is organizing the tour, Valentin Huedo is our inhouse DJ and surely... a great number of collaborators who actually give soul to the radio.

MANY YEARS WENT BY SINCE YOU STARTED, PEOPLE NOW VALUE WHAT YOU ACHIEVED BUT THE WAY TO GET THERE WAS LONG AND TOUGH, APART FROM ALL THE ILLUSION ONE HAS TO SACRIFICE HIMSELF, NO?

Absolutely! But it is the kind of sacrifice that doesn’t hurt as much because we do what we like. We are not the same after nine years... we have grown and refined ourselves. We are more professional and a lot better prepared. There are the one or another tough moments but the general output is without any doubt very positive. And believe me or not it costs to remember the bad moments, or better said, I can tell you a lot of sweet moments.

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS ONE NEEDS TO LEAD A RADIOSTATION IN IBIZA? Sometimes you need to be the father and sometimes the big brother. To keep the team motivated is a constant challenge. To listen and treat well is essential. To be the Boss is a real defiance, and believe me... it’s not easy as you work with people that become your friends. From an industrial aspect the radio has to broadcast almost 24 hours.

ALREADY A WHILE AGO I HEARD ABOUT BE-AT.TV, NOW THAT YOU HAVE JOINED FORCES TELL US ABOUT THIS COMPANY? It is a leading company in broadcasting events via streaming videos online and via apps. They host incredible content, including the best festivals around the globe. Besides the live broadcasts, their video archive is unique. Their productions are unconstrained and it is definitely the best option to enjoy a party or festival without leaving your home.

HOW DID THIS FUSION COME TO LIFE? It is a sum up of talent, it was a natural process. For many years we coincided in many festivals so a collaboration became the most obvious. After a year of negotiations doing some events together like the showcase in Tulum at the BPM festival we found the formula to exchange stocks, resulting in supplying media for Ibiza Sonica.

We launched our union celebrating an event called ‘ONE’ in the port of Ibiza for everybody, no doors, with Guy Gerber, Matthias Tanzmann, Nic Fanciulli, Reboot and Melanie Ribbe, Harvard Bass, Dosem, Jose Padilla, GC and myself playing. The joy was immense, a festival production in less than 10 days.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A FUSION OF THOSE BOTH WORLDS, WELL IT’S NOT REALLY TWO WORLDS AS THEY GOT A LOT IN COMMON? Our viewers / listeners will benefit from a bigger and better content. Technology will lead to a simpler and more effective access to this content, and the artists will surely participate in it through broadcasting their music. The events will have another range, all is for the better, and the public will notice this.

YOU GOT DIFFERENT CHANNELS UNDER YOUR UMBRELLA, WILL IT ALL CONTINUE AS IT IS OR WHAT WILL BE THE CHANGES FOR THE LISTENER? Soon we will broadcast on a new dial, 92,4 FM. There will be slight improvements in the content and we will work out a perfect programming that works 100% for us. Ibiza Sonica will gain in clarity and intensivity. In terms of the other stations they will improve having access to new and better content. And we will grow, adding more channels under our umbrella.

THIS MEANS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE RADIO AND FOR YOURSELF, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Happy - with the sensation that it is the begining of something.

Via this union our position as directors is fortified and we can focus on what we really like to do. The communication with the whole BE-AT team is excellent and we can’wait to embark new projects together. Ray Smith is an incredible person and will contribute a lot of value to the company. He knows how to handle things.

TALKING ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION AS DJ, HOW DO YOU MANAGE BOTH WORLDS? Better than ever. I find myself in a very lovely moment in my life and professional carreer. The professional part of being a DJ and director of Ibiza Sonica is a pleasure. Both worlds are interconnected and feed each other. Improving my carreer as DJ helps me to understand a lot of things in radio in terms of programming, and the radio provides me access to a huge amount of music, plus getting lots of proposals to play in clubs all over the globe. As I am not a producer it equilibrates with my knowledge about diffusion of music through radio.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE ISLAND THIS YEAR? Better than ever too. Enough of all the pessimistic comments about the islands condition. To all those telling that Ibiza is not the same as it was i ask one question - “you are the same you were?” For me the island is impeccable, with new proposals, with variety. One thing though is true, it has its price. This is not a cheap island, but all the travellers know the score anyway. Ibiza offers a huge variety and amount of leisure to the tourist, it is a very diverse island. And it maintains its charme, maybe in a more discrete and intimate way, but as powerful as ever.

TWO ANECDOTES FROM IBIZA SONICA. WHAT WAS THE MOST CRAZY MOMENT YOU LIVED? Without any doubt HOSH’s birthday two years ago. We left the CDLN boat in Formentera in a Zodiac equipped with a soundsystem in true musical pirate style, arrived at the restaurant El Pirata where we set up the party broadcasting the whole night.

SOLOMUN didn’t want to stop playing so the captain left without us. The following year on our way to do it again they told us that the Guardia Civil was waiting for us so we changed plan and left for a secret beach (a republic we love), collected the phones from all attendants so nobody could call anybody to inform them about the party and we set up a great one with Solomun, HOSH, UNER and David August playing, broadcasting it from a secret location.

HMMMMM, COLLECTING THE PHONES - GREAT MOVE! AND THE MOST SURPRISING ONE? Organizing the ‘ONE’ festival for thousands of people with an impressive production over ten days resulting in a real challenge..

This one and also the event we put together in Tulum for the BPM festival were the most spectacular ones, counting on the grateful comments in each direct broadcast we did.

Or the calls of international DJs arriving to Ibiza asking “Hey Igor, how is Sonica? Can i play some records?”

HOW DO YOU SEE THE ELECTION OF JOAN RIBAS AS DEPUTY OF THE MAYOR? He was my colleague in Radio, and he is a colleague as DJ, apart from being a great person and family guy. I invited him personally to attend the ‘ONE’ festival but he excused himself saying he has other commitments, not being able to rest for a single moment.

The president of the association of local traders in the port gave me a hug and thanked us for organizing and paying an event of such scale activating the local depressed economy.

I wish Joan all the best and hope he is aware of the importance of music for the advancement of the island, remembering where he comes from knowing how to measure with deliberateness the vicinal problems that the touristic engine of Ibiza can cause during the hundred days of season.

AND FINALLY, HOW DO YOU SEE DUB NOW, AFTER FIFTEEN YEARS OF EXISTENCE? dub is a reference, unique in its form. There is no other publication in Ibiza reflecting both sides of the island. The industry and its magic. I consider it being a magazine containing enriching content in a benefitial format. Congratulations Andy, Frank and all the team, you are marvellous. dub dub dub!!!

QUIEN ADEMÁS FORMA LA FAMILIA ‘SONICA’?

Mi amigo y socio Miguel Valverde que es el trabajo a la sombra. El que realmente se preocupa del desarrollo y estructura de la radio.

Los técnicos que desarrollan y sudan para que todo suene. Patricia en las redes sociales poniéndole ojos a nuestro universo sónico y Sandra aportando su visión en el desarrollo de proyectos. Matthias y Becky que son las voces de los directos, Ernesto que gestiona el tour, Valentin Huedo que es DJ de la casa y por supuesto.. un gran número de colaboradores que son los que realmente le dan soul a la radio.

Sonica se creó hace 9 años con muy pocos medios y con mucha ilusión. Yo personalmente venía de trabajar en la radio en la Costa del Sol y en Ibiza en medios como Cadena 100 o Global Radio. Decidimos crear nuestra propia plataforma y romper las formulas habituales de radio. Al no emitir publicidad y al apostar por un sonido propio, rápidamente recibimos el apoyo de la industria. No solo de los DJ´s y promotores si no que los oyentes la hicieron suya. Superando cualquier expectativa. Mucho más de lo que jamás pudimos imaginar.

Ibiza Sonica ha sido un medio que ha formado parte de la vida de Ibiza en los últimos (casi) 10 años. Hace unos 7 años la llegada de internet a la radio nos convirtió en un medio internacional.

Y hace 5 años con la llegada de las redes sociales conocimos a nuestros oyentes. Hemos evolucionado cada día.. en nuestra programación y en nuestro modelo de negocio. Trabajando por mejorar cada día.

Mantener al equipo motivado es todo un reto. Lo que sí es importante es oír y tratar bien. A ser jefe también hay que aprender, y creeme.. no es facil porque trabajas con personas que acaban siendo tus amigos. Respecto a la industria, la gestion de la radio requiere una conexión de casi 24 horas al día.

Es una empresa líder en la retransmisión de eventos via streaming de video on line y via apps. Sus contenidos son increíbles. Están en los mejores festivales del mundo. Y aparte de los directos, su archivo de video es único. Tienen una realización desenfadada y es sin duda la mejor opcion para disfrutar de una fiesta o un festival sin moverse de casa.

COMO HABEIS LLEGADO A ESTA FUSION? Es una suma de talentos. Ha sido un proceso natural. Hace años que llevamos coincidiendo en muchos eventos y la colaboración era lo más logico. Tras un año de negociaciones y algunos eventos juntos como el showcase en Tulum para el BPM festival, encontramos la fórmula para que se produzca este cambio de acciones que supondrá una inyección en medios para Ibiza Sonica.

Tras esta unión nuestra posición como directores se ve reforzada y trabajaremos en lo que realmente nos gusta. La comunicación con todo el equipo de BE-AT es excelente y estamos deseando empezar a trabajar en nuevos proyectos juntos. Ray Smith es un tipo increíble y va a aportar mucho valor a la empresa. CUENTANOS TAMBIEN A NIVEL DJ - COMO LLEVAS AMBOS MUNDOS? Mejor que nunca. Me encuentro en un momento muy dulce de mi vida personal y de mi carrera profesional. En la parte profesional ser DJ y director de Ibiza Sonica es una gozada. Las dos cosas están muy vinculadas y se retro-alimentan. El desarrollar mi carrera como DJ me ayuda a entender muchas cosas de la radio en cuanto a la programación y la radio me ayuda a acceder a gran cantidad de música y a recibir muchas ofertas para tocar en clubes de todo el mundo. No soy productor y esa carencia esta nivelada con mi conocimiento en las formulas de difusión de música como el medio radiofónico.

COMO VES LA ISLA ESTE AÑO? Mejor que nunca.. ya esta bien de mensajes pesimistas acerca del estado de salud de Ibiza. A los que dicen que Ibiza ya no es lo que era yo les hago una pregunta. ¿Y vosotros, sois los que erais? Yo la veo impecable, con nuevas propuestas, con variedad. Eso sí. A su precio. No es una isla barata, pero los que viajamos sabemos lo que hay por ahí. Ibiza ofrece cantidad de oferta de ocio al turista.

Es una isla muy divertida. Y conserva la magia, quizás de forma más discreta e intima pero igual de poderosa que siempre.

DOS ANÉCDOTAS DE LA HISTORIA DE IBIZA SONICA CUAL HA SIDO EL MOMENTO MÁS LOCO QUE HAS VIVIDO? Sin duda fue el cumpleaños de HOSH de hace dos años. Desembarcamos del barco CDLN en Formentera en una Zodiac con el equipo de música andando por la playa como piratas musicales.. llegamos al restaurante el Pirata donde montamos la fiesta retransmitiendo hasta la noche. SOLOMUN no quería dejar de pinchar y el capitán se fue sin nosotros. Al año siguiente de camino a repetirlo nos avisaron que la Guardia Civil nos estaba esperando así que cambiamos el rumbo y nos dirigimos a una playa secreta (una republica que amamos), recogimos los teléfonos de todos los invitados para que nadie pudiese llamar a nadie para informar de la fiesta y montamos una buena pinchando con Solomun, HOSH, UNER y David August retransmitiendo desde un lugar secreto.

HMMMM, RECOGER LOS TELEFONOS DE LOS INVITADOS, BIEN HECHO! Y CUAL EL MÁS SORPRENDENTE? Organizar el festival ONE para miles de personas con una producción impresionante en 10 días y ver los resultados ha sido un reto.. quizás ese y el evento que montamos en Tulum por el BPM festival han sido los más espectaculares, pero me quedo con las palabras de agradecimiento de los oyentes en cada directo que hacemos. O con las llamadas de los DJ´s internacionales cada vez que aterrizan en Ibiza. “Hey Igor que tal va Sonica? puedo poner unos discos?”

COMO VES LA ELECCIÓN DE JOAN RIBAS AL TENIENTE DEL ALCALDE? Fue compañero mío de radio. Y es compañero como DJ. Aparte de un gran tipo y padre de familia. Le invité personalmente a ONE y se disculpó porque tenía otros compromisos. No pudo pasarse ni un solo minuto. El que sí que se pasó fue el presidente de la asociación de comerciantes del barrio de la Marina que me dió un abrazo y las gracias por organizar y pagar un evento así que activó la economía tan deprimida del lugar. Le deseo lo mejor, y espero que sepa desde su posición ver lo importante que es la música para el desarrollo de la isla. Que recuerde de donde viene y que sepa mediar con temple los problemas vecinales que pueda ocasionar el motor turístico de Ibiza en los 100 días de temporada.

Y POR ÚLTIMO, COMO VES LA DUB AHORA, DESPUÉS DE 15 AÑOS DE EXISTENCIA? dub es una referencia. Es única en su especie. No hay una publicación en Ibiza que refleje las dos caras de Ibiza. Danish artist Rune Reilly ‘Kölsch’ did it again his vision of sensual and romantic Tech House is as addictive and seductive as you can take, featuring Gregor Schwellenbach, Tomas Haffding and WAA Industry on some of the tracks to enrich his sound to the max. He states that this longplayer was inspired by car journeys through Europe in his childhood, breathing creativity our of every track, out comes a perfect gift for every music lover.

Ry Cummings and Frank Wiedemann from Âme form Howling, together they are on a mission to bring sacred sounds to those who appreciate it with their first longplayer. Including their hit ‘Howling’ this album got it all - from deepest feelings to pure dancefloor heaven - always craving to be played to a crowd that appreciates their effort to convert any floor to a sacred ground. If possible i would give it eleven out of ten.

Not at all as simple as its title, Get Physical hands over compiling duties to Tuccillo, italian producer and DJ deeply rooted with our island, to represent their vision of Ibizan sound for 2015. Tracks from John Monkman, Onno, George Morel & Nakadia or Tuccillo himself confirm that he manages to counterbalance the trend to commercialized big floor beats with high quality tech house gems from deep to ecstatic, moving any floor with an attitude.

Clearly floor-orientated there is a track for every lover, from sweet melodic house to deepest, synth-driven and bass-drenched tools for every skilled DJ to enchant a dedicated crowuntil love pours out of every cell in their dancing booties.

To be released on Maya Jane Coles’ label I/AM/ ME as the only other artist besides herself for now, this album by Rachel Butt and Ed Critchley aka Gaps is set to bewitch the listener with carefully crafted sounds of Indie, Folk, a splash of Psychedelic but first of all real handcrafted music with no boundaries. Both artists claim they could only work together, one vision leads to another.

Jacob Gurevitsch presents pure balearic bliss in form of an instrumental album containing latin instruments, sentimental soundcarpets, deepest drum patterns and melancholic brainfood par excellence. An album for all ages, all orientations and sexes, just bring your handkerchief and prepare for some emotional rollercoaster true music for dreams - again.

Manchester-based producer Rufdug took two synths, a couple of effect units and a four-track cassette recorder plus his laptop to the Caribbean and recorded a longplayer confirming his ability to create downtempo landscapes spinning over different styles. Lulling the listener into his world he manages to create an instant escape from reality into music heaven - true music for dreams.

To talk about the tracks is dispensable, it is the way he blends them together that make this an outstanding one. Straining over the last 20 years of music history, he manages to get the very best out of each one. Eleven out of ten!

Tact Recordings presents the debut album of Yard One aka label owner Jordan Bruce and Larry Jones, a collection of tracks ranging from beatiful Ambiental spheres over Oldschool House with a modern twist up to Hypnotic House with a techy edge. Vocals get delivered

by Rachel K Collier, adding her extra stamp on some of the dance tracks, making the package a great tool for DJs all over the world.

Another great release on Kompakt - not brand new but well wort a review. Terranova are Fetisch + &ME, known for their ability to serve the floors with their unique cosmic grooves and spacey melodies, combining them on this LP with great artists such as Rob Birch from Stereo MCs, Bon Homme, Lydmor, Cath Coffey and Rocco on the vocals to give their tracks the extra kick. Best listened with the volume to max and your dancing shoes on.

Confirming the outstanding bandwith Cocoon recordings contains, this longplayer from Ricardo Tobar is meant to be heard entirely. The more you listen to it you will discover the beauty in its dark and sometimes schizophrenic attitude, showing you the way to get out of it straight into the light.

Electronic music pioneers Slam return to Soma Records wth an album that is more a concept than a collcetion of tracks, each one opens the door for the next, masterfully crafted with their trademark sequence-drenched emotional outbreaks crowning finest beats ranging from ambiental openers to house over broken beats to techno as if it would be the most easy to create. This is definitely their best album so far, a must for ‘Slammers’.

Over a year in the making this album is more of a collection of different musical styles, woven together seamlessly to give sunshine to your heart, pleasure to your hips and extasy to your brain. Ambient, Jazz, Funk Downtempo and finest Deep House are the ingredients for this addictive cocktail, proving once more the outstanding production skills of Paul Daryll and Richard Jones. A perfect tool for versatile DJs to satisfy any crowd. Featured artists are FromDropTillDawn, Clyde P, Oliver Deuerling, Julian Wassermann, Lenny Maze and Nurhee, headhoncho of Blue Dye.

A brief collection of the greatest tracks so far on Visionquest are united on this 3 CD bundle, ranging from Deep House to Spiritual Techno.

Highly emotional tracks that take you on a trip to the perfectly crafted world of one of the most influential labels those days, and what i like most is they are always up for including new talents besides getting the best out of their elite roster of finest producers. Ten out of ten.

Ali and Basti Schwarz are of the finest German producers, never conforming to any style but their own.Once more they show their bandwith producing tracks ranging from deep to peak time techno. Vocals come from Berlin artist Khan, and the overall feel is somewhat darker than before, serving even the most sophisticated clubber with what he likes most - moving that booty to intelligent dance music with an attitude.

Released on Moon Harbour as part of their 15 years celebration in 2015, Thomas Koch aka DJ T delivers another floor monster featuring the voice of Nick Maurer. Purest Chicago inspired house tracks kicking in from deep in his unique style to enchant any living being ready to dance. Title track ‘The Growing’ is straight to the hip with a phat bassline reigning over a heavy kick, subtle melodies and the robotic voice of Nick. ‘Times we had’ is more spaced-out, leaving your imagination loose whilst Emanuel Satie on remix duties for the title track converts it to a hypnotic, repetitive brainladen peak time stomper. Only for the brave.

Einmusika became on of my favourite labels from Berlin, founded by Samuel Kindermann aka Einmusik. The sound can best be described as finest Deep Tech House with a darker yet friendly twist. Budakid debuts with three tracks of three numbers. ‘Five’ is a perfect track to open a night on any dedicated floor, rich synths filter their way through basslines, strings and hats attached to it naturally, whilst ‘Seven’ is lighter, more spacey, almost sweet, painting a smile on your face while dancing. ‘Eleven’ then is almost the perfect mix of both, slow, underlined with a beautiful vocal and long deep melodies. A three tracker for the beautifully bright moments in darkness.

AUDIOFLY / CHIAROSCURO Anthony and Luca let us wait 16 months to embrace the clubworld with their latest release, featuring Big Bully on one of the tracks, Lost your way. But don’t worry, they have not lost a single millimeter of their way, it’s the other way round, the waiting is rewarded with their probably best tracks so far. The voice of Big Bully crowns an acid-driven beatmonster spinning over 8 minutes enriched with melodic bits embracing underworldly beats. The instrumental version is raw and dirty, just the way we love it. Title track ‘Chiaroscuro’ means literally ‘lightdark’, giving you a hint of what to expect, a gated bassline flirting with the perfect kick, brainwashing synths tripping on shredded vocal bits, flanked by a ravey melody - melting all together to collective madness only those two can create. Audio flyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

LA FLEUR / ORBIT Released on ‘Last Night On Earth’, Sanna la Fleur presents her latest EP consisting of title track ‘Orbit’, a straight-forward floorkiller par excellence. Rich in texture, two basslines riding a kick Chicago style until a subtle melody supported by a vocal bit opens the gateway to escape into orbit. Acid Mondays are on remix duty, delivering a softer and deeper version of the original, adding a heavy bassline and more vocalshreds.

‘Reflections’ is my fave on this EP, a classic start prepares your hips for heavy movement when the bassline jumps in, followed by a sneaky melody from far beyond just to kidnap your neurones during a long spacey break, bringing all ingredients back just where they should be.

SIMION / WHY DON’T YOU SAY We did an interview with Simion on dubibiza.com - he is part of a new breed of German producers of Deep Tech House. A lovely female vocal stands on top of a solid bassline and kick, swinging synths and classic melodies, opening up after a break to a fully loaded floorkiller. Johannes Brecht is on remix duties, offering a deeper but not less driving version focusing on more melodies, tingling atmospheres and a rich construct of hats, claps and snares. Overlooking it all is an echoed ravesignal-like warm melody culminating in a violin string breaking the flow for some great moments to kick you back with another bassline to where you belong - on the floor.

HOWLING / STOLE THE NIGHT RMXS As i already wrote in the longplayer section, Howling is the duo of Ry Cummings and Frank Wiedemann, together they form what is best described as the perfect fusion of indie, electronica and clubmusic on the most sensual level. ‘Stole the night’ in the original version is a beautiful indie track in a 4/4 basement, creating a gorgeous atmosphere of loving melancholy. ‘Midland’ takes it straight to the floor, adding synths, tripped out melodies and basslines as it was made for it, out comes one of my favourite tracks this month. Âme (who else…) take it even a step further, filtering the voice on top of rich melodies and acid-short synths, completing the package into a must-have for sensual DJs empowering their crowd to steal the night.

Whatever it means, it remains unrevealed… Straight forward, Martin delivers the original version of Da Geh Bo with a big pair of balls, placing a massive warm bassline onto a short, precise kick, flanked by long hihats, only to introduce a friendly melody twirling around until the echoed vocal presents itself as if something weird has just spammed the free speech function in your brain. The house mix is not less groovy, a reverbing bassline sits on top of a rolling kick, a warm melody engulfs the setup until the vocal comes up again, synths start dropping in to sweeten the experience, leaving you smiling weirdly. ‘The Bridge’ finishes off the pack, chicago-ish synth meets tribal influences - all three together can burn any floor at any time - you just have to drop them at the right time.

Music For Dreams from Denmark is known for bridging different worlds with a smile. This time it is Ibiza veteran DJ Pippi who is entitled to represent our island with a beautiful slow beat remix of David Guetta’s ‘Dangerous’ featuring the voice of JL. Heavy bassline flanked by a deep, slow kick running on an estimated 116 bpm. Best played on a beach to bridge the day after sunset into the night and invite the crowd to enter the dancefloor.

Lost & Found records present a two tracker capable of uniting lovers of different styles simply by a perfect production using bold basslines, beautiful vocals and heartbreaking melodies. ‘Downriver’ hosts an indian vocal to crown a massive bassline, rolling kick, nature-inspired background sounds and tricky rhythm elements to enthral and induce dancefloor delirium, whilst ‘Trans’ is definitely pointing on the booty with its vast percussive elements, a floating female vocal shred and slowly unfolding background melodies. He certainly has the talent to cross lines and enthuse even the most sophisticated dancer. On top ‘Trans’ somehow reminds me of some old Pete Namlook styled melodies with its euphorism, making it even more memorable.

ANJA SCHNEIDER / CIRCLE CULTURE Mobilee headhoncho Anja Schneider keeps the pace after a successful 2014 with this release, injecting a healthy dose of oldschool 90’s drenched techo vibes into a warm, dreamy and hypnotic track as it is the title one ‘Circle Culture’ - i can almost hear Cosmic Baby out of the melody, riding high on a super short bassline topping a warm kick, and when the break suddenly leaves you with the urge for more it is only fair of her to do exactly what you expect, take the whole setup to another 4 minutes of pure dancfloor heaven. Konstantin Sibold and Leif Müller are on remix duty, shifting from third to fourth gear with a smile, adding haunting hats and claps plus a twirling synth driving your feet mad whilst following up. Second track ‘The Squaring’ plays its card one at a time, broken beats releash a beast that unfolds heavily after a long and deserved break, only to culminate in nothing less than a techno stomper par excellence, making this one the cherrie on the pie for those who still stand.

WHO MADE WHO / EMBER REMIXES The original release on GPM is a jewel for all lovers of the outstanding deepness and depth of this danish trio, and the remix pacakage now takes it to the dancefloors for the most sophisticated clubbers on the globe.

First on duty is Santé, delivering a dry and dirty vision of the original, taking off with a dry beat introducing spaced-out synths and rhythm elements one at a time until the end. The girls from Blond:ish blow some fresh wind from start, add spacey synths and spice the vocals with endless delay and reverberation. Fran Seven takes things very slow, quite close to the original this one is best played on a beach for sunset or veeeery late hours. Finally my absolute fave and 100% addictive is the take of Bedouin on the original, this is the definition of Deep House as i love it, building slowly but surely until you find yourself wrapped in goosepimpels. Adding one beatuiful element after the other until the enhanced and filtered vocals come in to beam you to emotional heaven in an istant, this track is meant to enchant every single music lover. Eleven out of ten.

V.A. / 4/4 # 18 1980 Recordings is London - Ibiza based Dan McKie’s baby where he sometimes unleashes some underground beasts such as those four tracks on this EP. All four are straight-to-the-point, no prisoners kept alive, the only chance is to dance or leave. Anton Stelz’ ‘Combine’ is a ‘just before peaktime’ on a busy floor thing with shuflfed melodies, strong beat and a likely schizo vocal, Beat Amusement’s ‘Sound of the Sun’ arrives from the oldschool house fields containing an intelligent broken break whilst Alex Francini’s ‘Plastic’ continues the same line, only he decides to break it up rave style. Finally Noone Known’s ‘Cocktail’ is my fave, another oldschool jewel with attitude and fresh production details. Nothing for the bored.

ALEX NIGGEMANN / STELLAR On his very own AEON label Alex releases the ‘Stellar’ EP, a three tracker as typical as it can be to ecstasize his faithful fanbase. Titletrack ‘Stellar’ propels you out of darkness into melancholic beauty in the blink of an eye whilst the beat drives your booty to the center of the floor. ‘Asterism’ hosts the same melancholism slowly unfolding a heroic atmosphere just to finally convert into a floorkiller somewhere between house and techno haven. Finally Belgian Locked Groove is on remix duty for ‘Asterism’, pulling the triggers from the very start, twirling melodies and schizoid elements prepare your booty for what is there to come - an emotional outburst into a sheer endless break only to throw your feet back to where they belong - on the floor.

LEHAR / FLORA & ZEPHYR Italian born producer Lehar is on the rise and there is no end in sight. He has a unique style to create feelings through music, taking you instantly into his sound universe after the first bits of every track. This release on Conaisseur Recordings is his best so far, a four tracker where he features his brother in mind Musumeci. First track ‘Zephyr’ is named after the son of titans Astraios and Eos who together with his wife Flora, goddess of flowers and the spring season had a romantic relationship. Lehar transports this story into the track with passion, out comes a killer track. Intro ‘In Ipnosi’ is a perfect introduction to every sophisticated set, ‘Horizon’ is a coproduction with Musumeci, named ‘the future of italian Hose music’

by Kristian from Âme, and both create a light but lulling atmosphere impossible to resist. Final track ‘Flora’ is as simple as genius, painting a smile on your face and happiness to your booty. Ten out of Ten.

V.A. / 4 TO THE FLOOR 05 Diynamic created this series to showcase new and upcoming talents that fit into their roster, and the fifth edition is no exception. It might be the strongest package and is surely made to conquer their fan’s hearts. First artist is Andy Bros with his track ‘Vento’, a sweet and groovy affair with rich rhythms, a touch of latin and strong melodies. Hohberg & Butch join forces to create ‘Losing Gravity’, and name is program, the track develops slowly but surely, dreamy melodies swing on a rich basement, a long break prepares the crowd for the final lift-off. Seven Doors present ‘Movement of Whale’, a sure shot to get everybody going in positiveness - a summertrack par excellence. Finally Several Definitions presents ‘Every Day’, a playful track with trancey elements but in a tech house fit, building up slowly to finally present an old school-ish vocal tp put the ‘gude laune’ stamp on this release.

SABB / ONE OF US FEAT. FORREST Moon Harbour presents Sabb, a producer from the Kosovo, with a three tracker to get anybody into the groove. Featuringf the voice of Forrest, ‘One of us’ in the original version is a tricky one, a phat kick accompanied by shimmering drums and trippy melodic synths prepares the dancer for the break unveiling the sweet vocal, driving a smile on everybody’s face.

First remix comes from Dennis Ferrer, stripping down the original to its bones, adding extra deepness and emptions, making you sing along, drilling the vocal in youjr neurones for quite a while. Second remix comes from Detlef from Viva Music, delivering a quite oldschool House version with phat drum and tricky short sharp Hi Hats, solely made for the floorfreaks.

ANDRE HOMMEN / INTROSPECTRAL Leaving behind his job at Objektivity label Andre now fully concentrates on his carrerer as artist, delivering a typical Poker Flat EP with all it takes. ‘Centrifuge’ will skid your brain with its intriguing melodies, a ultra low bassline thrones over a rolling kick, Claps and Hi Hats conquer each others territory whilst you are left shaking your booty until the melodramatic break propels the track into floor heaven. Title track ‘Introspectral’ starts quite innocent, introducing cycling loops and melancholic chord vibes up to a riff that will surely stay in your brain for a time. Last track is the dub version of the titletrack, more for the later hours as an introspective affair, crowning in a long, beatless breakdown. Epic.
