The Sunshine Coast is a 1 hour drive north of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, and 2 hours’ drive north of the Gold Coast. The region is 2291km² in size stretching from the iconic Glasshouse Mountains in the south to Peregian Beach and Eumundi in the north.

The Sunshine Coast is one of the largest local government areas in Australia with a population of 355,598 and has averaged 2.5 per cent average annual growth over the last decade, making it one of the fastest growing areas in the country (ABS, 2022).

The Sunshine Coast’s population is expected to grow to more than 500,000 people by 2041, representing the fourth fastest expected growth in the State (ABS, 2022). It is well serviced with daily flights from Melbourne and Sydney, as well as daily rail, bus and shuttle services from Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

A DESTINATION WITH HISTORY

Bokarina Beach is a place where surfers and “lifestyle” enthusiasts of old enjoyed a carefree lifestyle hidden away from prying eyes.

Part of the appeal of Bokarina Beach was that due to the wetlands behind the beach, access was somewhat challenging. The area behind the beach covered a massive 74 acres and is one of the last remaining dune-side land parcels of land on the Sunshine Coast.

But the beach has a history that stretches back to WWII where the stretch of land between Dicky and Bokarina beaches were used for artillery target practice by the Royal Australian Artillery (and is how Battery Hill got its name).

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the history of this site can be traced back to the 70’s and early 80’s, where, according to local folklore, this fenced off parcel of land became known as “Shangri-la” and was said to be a haven for nudists who enjoyed many a carefree party on the beach.

All of this is now gone, and the wetlands have since been reclaimed, and what remains is a stunning, oceanside location that will offer a Sunshine Coast lifestyle like no other.
