Operated by the Matthews Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resource Department, the Crews Recreation Center offers many programs yearround for all ages including athletic leagues, martial arts, summer camps, and seasonal events. Amenities include a full court gymnasium, six basketball goals, three volleyball standards, and a multi-purpose room. Call for open gym hours and more information.

The Sportsplex at Matthews is an athletic facility that consists of nine synthetic turf fields and two grass fields. All fields are multi-purpose and can accommodate a variety of sports; soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, rugby, etc. A 5,000-capacity stadium with a natural grass field is the premier athletic facility to host amateur, collegiate, and professional sporting events. The stadium includes a two-story field house with home, away, and referee locker rooms. The top floor of the field house is a 90-person conference room that is available to rent. There is ample parking with 1,400 parking spaces. The Sportsplex also has two playgrounds and roughly 2 miles of paved trails.

Walk, hike, or bike the 1.5-mile nature trail that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. If you bring your dog, be sure to keep it on a leash. Other amenities include an impressive playground for kids with a lot of cool equipment, picnic shelters, tables, grills, two softball fields, and restrooms. For those with a competitive spirit, a round of disc golf on the 18-hole course.

GOVERNMENT & ADMINISTRATION Matthews is governed by a Mayor and a six-member Board of Commissioners. A nonpartisan election for Mayor is held every two years. Commissioner elections are also nonpartisan and all seats are at-large. Commissioners are elected for two year terms. Town Council meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of every month at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. The public is given an opportunity to speak at every meeting for four minutes on any topic. Q. What is your greatest achievement outside of work as Mayor of Matthews? My wife Penny and I are the parents of two grown children. Our daughter Summer is a program specialist with the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. She is married and lives in Washington DC. Our son Jed is working towards his master’s degree in urban planning at NYU. Being a father to these two fantastic children has been the crowning achievement of my life. They make me proud every day.

When locals see you on the street or out in the community without a formal event, what do they usually say to you? Compliments or complaints? I would say 75% compliments, 25% “opportunities for improvement”. Matthews’ residents are overwhelmingly agreeable and discuss even complaints in a courteous way. Often they tell me how pleased they are with town staff, who regularly go above and beyond expectations to make sure our residents are treated well. Describe the Town of Matthews in 3 words? Home Sweet Home.

Sometimes public officials need to take a moment to get away. Where do you like to go when you need to take a break from the daily grind? From a young age my parents and grandparents instilled in me an appreciation of nature and in growing things. A break will frequently find me walking through the woods, working in my garden, filling some birdfeeders or tending to my bees (I am a beekeeper). This early appreciation of the natural world has led to a concerted effort as Mayor to preserve as much green space in Matthews as possible.
