It is with great pleasure and excitement that we welcome you to the 3rd Annual Data Science and Analytics Symposium This year’s theme is "Data Science and Analytics and Artificial Intelligence: Emerging Themes and Ethics for Driving Social Impact."

In today's digital age, data analytics and artificial intelligence have revolutionized the way we understand and interact with the world around us. This Symposium aims to explore the latest trends, developments, and ethical considerations, with a focus on how AI can be leveraged to drive positive industry impact

The US Census Bureau and the Center for Business & Graduate Studies, Center for Data Analytics, and the MIS Department have brought together a diverse group of experts and thought leaders who will share their knowledge and insights on a wide range of topics, including ethical considerations in AI, emerging trends in data science, and the potential of these technologies to address key social issues.

We hope that this Symposium will not only provide you with valuable insights and information but also inspire you to think critically about the ethical implications of data science and artificial intelligence.

VISION

The BSU College of Business under the leadership of the Information Systems Department is proud to collaborate with the US Census Bureau to bring a Data Science and Analytics (DSA) Symposium to Bowie State University. The Data Science and Analytics Symposium is BSU's premiere data analytics symposium, gathering data science influencers, academic thought leaders, business innovators, and some of our top students who are making great strides in the industry The two-day, in-person Symposium offers a range of dynamic panels and forums centering on relevant research and exciting new trends. Industry leaders will discuss the latest developments in data science, research outcomes and plans in several domains, and DSA workforce, training, and education needs The DSA also features a job fair, student research presentations, and networking

Some of the resources that will be presented are: ChatGPT, Planning Database, Annual Business Survey (ABS) Program, Criminal Justice Administrative Records System (CJARS), Census Business Builder (CBB), Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics Students participating in the Datathon Competition will present their research and may win cash prizes

ABOUT THE STUDENT JOB FAIR

Take part in mini-workshops, network, apply for competitive jobs & internships, and get hired!

Students will have an opportunity to participate in job readiness activities to include workshops focusing on resume writing, job search tips, and interview skills

U.S. Census Bureau recruiters will be onsite to identify candidates for internships and competitive positions. Also, Employ Prince George’s will host numerous employers offering relevant jobs and paid internships in several disciplines and levels.

DATATHONCOMPETITION

The challenge focuses on studying equity, disparity or injustice issues in the US using Data Science and Analytics as well as other current issues such as elections, and two or more datasets from different data sources including at least one dataset from the Census Bureau. Team will formulate analytics objectives, identify appropriate datasets, curate, analyze, etc. They will develop DSA based analysis of the problem or issues under study and provide recommendations for solutions or provide innovative data products for clients. They will present and answer questions from judges.

The work includes: (1) Using data and analytics, describe and discuss the attributes/variables/factors associated with the problems or issues under consideration; (2) Identify important factors that contribute to the problems or issues under consideration; (3) Develop data tools including visuals, dashboards and models used for prediction; (4) Provide recommendations for procedures or policies improvement to address the problems or issues under consideration

Caleb is an economist in the Center for Enterprise DisseminationDisclosure Avoidance (CED-DA) at the Census Bureau Caleb works in statistical data privacy and protection; more specifically, His focus is on implementing formally private methods of data dissemination, and he serve as a Disclosure Avoidance Officer for the FSRDC system

Carlos Lopes is the Administrator for the Kentucky FSRDC Prior to joining Census, he served as a staff economist with the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission and has also held university faculty positions. Lopes’ research focuses on public and corporate finance, labor, and family economics. He has published in academic journals such as Journal of Economic Studies, Social Science Quarterly, and the Journal of Economics He has also authored a textbook for managerial economics titled, DecisionMaking and Business Performance

David Whittington is currently the Section 508 Coordinator for the US Census Bureau and works in the Application Development and Services Division (ADSD) Mr Whittington’s team provides accessibility guidance, governance, and training to help the Bureau make our digital products accessible to the disabled community Prior to joining the agency, he worked for the Defense Information Systems Agency where he was a Test Director, helping the US military develop, maintain, and operate mission critical Information Systems for the warfighter

Emily Wiley is the chief of the Statistics Modernization Branch in the US Census Bureau's Economy-Wide Statistics Division. Her team of statisticians and data scientists build analytical tools and machine learning programs to innovate and modernize the Economic Census and other economic surveys Emily holds a bachelor’s degree in pure mathematics, with a minor in statistics, and a master’s degree in mathematics, both from the University of Central Florida She also earned a master’s certificate in business analysis from George Washington University

Eona Harrison, PhD is the Director for BSU’s Center for Data Analytics She is a trained family demographer whose mixed-methods work examines birthing people’s strategies to achieving their reproductive goals and family resilience approaches to food insecurity Her work incorporates an equity and structural lens to investigate pathways that lead to racial inequities in maternal health, infant and child outcomes, and community well-being

Dr Harrison is also a leader in the growing portfolio of community engaged methods She was the Principal Investigator for the East Baltimore Research Project, a community-based participatory research effort to equip residents with data and the research capacity to shape changes in their community Dr Harrison specializes in data visualization She is committed to building the capacity of individuals to approach issues empirically to better inform changes in programs, services, and policy

Bolametiren Cecilia Akinlaja is a dynamic professional with a Master of Business Administration from Bowie State University and a wealth of experience in data management, business analytics, and project management. She recently served as the Truist Community Project Manager at BSU and is currently consulting with the Center for Data Analytics,

Bolametiren excels in driving data-driven decisionmaking and implementing strategic initiatives to enhance organizational effectiveness. With a keen eye for detail and a knack for problem-solving, Bolametiren has a proven track record of delivering successful projects. Ms Lakshmi Raman is the Director of Artificial Intelligence for the CIA where she is working to champion, orchestrate, and integrate AI activities across the organization She has been an officer in the Agency since 2002 when she entered on duty as a software developer

Since then, Raman has served in various capacities including leading numerous software development efforts in support of the Agency and the IC, directing large-scale data science and business analytics efforts, and promoting and facilitating intelligence integration and information sharing between the CIA and IC partners

Responsible AI Lead Amazon Web Services

As Chief Economist of the US Census Bureau, Lucia Foster is responsible for identifying gaps in our understanding of the dynamic and complex US economy and then finding ways to fill these gaps by working with staff and outside experts in researching and developing new data products and improving and enhancing existing data production

Foster and a team of other researchers proposed and established the Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs, first fielded in 2014 Foster was instrumental in the effort to have the Management and Organizational Practices Survey added as a supplement to the Annual Survey of Manufactures She is one of the key Census Bureau members of the Collaborative Micro-Productivity Project, a joint project with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which has created the public use dataset Dispersion Statistics on Productivity

Diya Wynn is a Responsible AI Lead at AWS that started and led customer engagement globally on Responsible AI. In 2023, she was named one of Business Insiders top 15 in Enterprise AI and top 100 in AI, one of 100 Brilliant Women in AI EthicsTM, She received the VentureBeat Women in AI -Responsible AI and was a finalist for Women in AI – AI for Good Responsible AI leader.

Wynn makes Responsible AI practical and accessible. She has met with legislators globally to provide perspective to influence regulation and policy on AI. She is an author and speaker; serves on non-profit boards; volunteers, and guest lectures on responsible and inclusive technology. When she isn’t working hard on the future of AI, she’s working hard to influence the future.

Ally manages the Emerging Technology Fellowship with xD and builds partnerships to bring highly skilled technologists into government Ally previously led a team of project managers on the Operational Readiness and Integration team for the 2020 Census. The department offers the Business Information Systems (BUIS) concentration under the BSc in Business Administration program, Master of Science in MIS, Master of Science in MIS with Information Assurance concentration and Systems Analyst graduate certificate programs

CENTER FOR DATA ANALYTICS

The CDA is Bowie State University’s leading data-driven hub for faculty, students, academic departments and entrepreneurs. We provide research support, a strong community collective, and data learning opportunities for the campus and the public. We also serve as a resource for investigative efforts with ready access to individuals skilled in the application of statistical methods, data analysis, and statistical computing from a consulting and applied research perspective

Data Analytics Concentration

Within the Department of Management Information Systems, the data analytics concentration combines the study of computer science, mathematics and business Students must complete 24 credit hours of data analytics courses atop of required core business administartion courses

Upper Div. Cert. Data Analytics

Open to all undergrad majors except Business Administration majors with a concentration in Data Analytics The certificate focuses on empowering students to tackle problems while enhancing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to understand, identify, prepare, and analyze data using modern computing technologies

Data Science

Within the Department of Computer Science, this data science major provides mastery of mathematics, statistics, computer science, and core data science concepts such as machine learning, deep learning, and data mining

Generalist Digital Tech in DA

By taking a selection of three classes, BSU students of all majors can gain sought-after introductory technology capabilities that support their field of study and receive a generalist certificate from BSU through the Capital CoLAB’s Digital Technology Credential program
