DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT Antonio Martins is an interior designer based in San Francisco where he has lived for the past 15 years. Starting his career in Switzerland, where he acquired an appreciation for European design, while being immersed in antiques, architecture and Asian arts and cultures. His path from the early 1990s and to present has let him through living in Switzerland, Venice, Frankfurt, Hong Kong and now San Francisco. Normally the first one in his office, Antonio enjoys the early morning hours when he is able to concentrate and conceptualize each of his client’s unique designs and expectations. He likes to set the stage when working with clients. From creating inspirational mood and color boards, to detailed drawings, he shows the client what is possible. In daily meetings with his staff, he sets a clear direction for each staff member, explaining the plan and vision for each project. Driving multiple projects at the same time, Antonio credits his talented and hardworking staff for their support.

His love of antiques puts him on a constant hunt for unusual or rare vintage pieces. He then turns these one-of-a-kind pieces into centerpieces for his interiors, giving each project its own unique character. A personal win for him was the 2014 San Francisco Decorators Showcase House where he designed the master bedroom in the honor of his heritage, using an antique Portuguese bed that had been in his family for over 100 years. This was the proudest moment of his professional career.

Known for both Residential & Commercial Interiors, Antonio’s unique experience and background in hospitality has made him successful with restaurant and hotel design. His understanding of the industry, with it’s challenges and deadlines, gives him the upper edge on these projects.

- 12 - VOLUME IV WINTER 2017 | CA NORTH CHAPTER

No matter the focus, Antonio loves the industry and the entire design process. His favorite part is getting to know his clients and working hand in hand with them in their homes. His personalization and individual insight insures each client’s set of design goals will be met. His passion and ability to know his clients helps drive him to create exceptional works.

Since joining ASID 10 years ago, I have seen how the organization educates and empowers designers. When I arrived in the Bay Area, I found a home on their local Board and was able to share my experiences and knowledge with designers and student members. ASID has been a wonderful community as it introduces new designers to resources which they might not have been familiar with otherwise. I applaud the way ASID helps it’s members to grow their businesses by joining forces with Industry Partners and showrooms, all working together as a design community.

DESIGNER Q&A WITH

CHRIS ESKRA

2018 | 2019 ASID CALIFORNIA NORTH PRESIDENT What is most important when beginning a design?

“I really believe you must listen to your clients wants and ask them about their expectations for the final outcome. It’s not about designing for myself but creating something that ultimately the client will love and enjoy for years to come. Once we establish what it is that the client wants, I start with concept sketches and inspirational images to ensure we both are on the same path since what I might call contemporary is not what every client sees as contemporary design. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I begin my process with imagery that sets the design direction. To me interior design is really about creating a personalized space and a sanctuary where we regenerate and thrive.” What do you love most about the design process? “I love the variety of things I get to do in a day. From designing a kitchen or bathroom, space planning or envisioning a new approach for a room. I also really enjoy the technical side of building things and then switching gears to the creative side of working with furniture, fabric and artwork. This is the really fun artsy side of what we do. I feel like I’m using both sides of my brain and running my own business lets me make the decisions which drive a fully diverse array of responsibilities.” What is your role in your design business? “This really depends on the job, client and scope of the project. For the most part, I give direction and then let others run with it and create something they feel meets a client’s vision. I believe in empowering my team and getting them invested in the project. I instill each of my design team members to own their part of the project in their way. But from the initial client meetings to the execution and installing the design, I overseeing the project thru to completion.” continu ed next pag e

CHRIS ESKRA

Do you support any other non-profit organizations besides ASID? “Yes, I love to do community service and have participate in various organizations and outreach every year. I am currently on the Board of the SOMA Rotary and am involved in supporting many of the community projects they sponsor. I really believe in giving back to the community by donating my time. It enriches my life as it supports where I live.” Do you have any hobbies? “My true passion is public service, so I try to give back whenever I can. I believe that each of us is a uniquely lucky individual that can help, teach and assist others. I also have a passion for real estate If you can call this a hobby. Looking at rentals properties and homes for sale really helps me in my design practice and with my clients. I love to look at houses and see how they are finished, the way they flow and what I would have done had I the opportunity to design it myself.

- 16 - VOLUME IIIV WINTER SPRING 2018 | CA NORTH CHAPTER

My real hobby is that I love to fix things around the house, so I’m always involved in some project. I also love to garden. Working with my hands is both peaceful and fulfilling. There is nothing like eating something you have nurtured and grown yourself. I am fortunate to say that I have a space to have a garden here in San Francisco.” Tell us something you are most proud of? “I recently submitted and was approved to design a room in the 2017 San Francisco Decorators Showcase House. The process was a real labor of love, but I am incredibly proud of the final results where I created an office space which was dark, sexy yet inviting and livable. It felt like a real expression of my own personal design without filters.
