Communicating the IMPACT of Design 40 Years, One Voice Dear Friends and Colleagues, Today I’d like to talk to you about Communicating the IMPACT of Design. According to ASID National CEO Randy Fiser, we must change the conversation to ensure the future of our profession. This means talking less about what we do and how we do it, and instead talking specifically about the IMPACT that design has on the human experience. Are you ready to try something new? Read on… Whether you are practicing in the residential, kitchen and bath, commercial, retail, hospitality, healthcare or education market places, what YOU do makes an impact on the lives of the human beings who play, work, learn, grow, and heal in these spaces. When advocating for interior design friendly legislation, when battling legislation that threatens to restrict our right to practice, when explaining our fees to a client, or engaging with a team of colleagues on a project, our message needs to be clear. Interior Design has an IMPACT on the human experience. We are not out to be the most glamorous (though many of us are), we are not out to get the most magazine covers (though many of us do), we are not out to sell the most expensive materials and finishes (though if the project calls for it then so be it), we are, first and foremost, designing for humanity. The ASID appellation is a badge of honor, a statement of fact. For 40 years we have worked to change the perception of interior design in the marketplace and claim our rightful place as professionals of the built environment. Why hasn’t it worked? The advertising, the pleading with legislators, the shouting from mountain tops… Because it’s not about us! Yes, I said it. It’s not about us. It’s about the impact on others. The future of our profession depends upon our united ONE VOICE. Are you with me? What do you think? Do you have a story to share? Are you willing to change the conversation with the public, our clients, architects, builders, vendors, and the community of professionals that shape the built environment? Here’s how: • Put your ASID appellation front and center on all your marketing materials. • Talk about the HUMAN IMPACT of what you do. • Seek out opportunities to serve your ASID community. Design Matters Because People Matter. (period)

Student Representative Chris Nobriga, Student Member ASID 408.250.8058 cnob4@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Chapter Administrator Monika Rose admin@asidcapen.org

Regreen Workshop It IS easy being green Our CA Peninsula Chapter continued to demonstrate commitment to educating members on sustainable interior design practices by hosting its second annual REGREEN® workshop in March. The twenty-two workshop attendees were comprised of residential and commercial interior design professionals and students as well as a chemical engineer and architect. Some came from as far as British Columbia and Fresno to become educated on the principles of the program. Reasons for signing up varied. One designer had a current need to understand options for sustainable bathroom fixtures, and many of the design students in attendance voiced that the future of sustainable design is NOW – education on sustainable design is no longer an option, it is a requirement. Sadly, an interior designer from L.A., signed up for very personal reasons. His child suffered neurological trauma as a result of exposure to a toxic finish. His passion about healthy building was evident throughout the day, and his dedication to healthy, sustainable design inspired us all.

Launched in March 2008, the REGREEN program was created through a partnership between the ASID Foundation and the U.S.

Student Chapter Spotlight San Jose State University The award winning Interior Design Program at San José State University, with its emphasis in Interior Architecture, provides students with an excellent education preparing them to enter the design and technology rich environment surrounding Silicon Valley. Students who earn their BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design) from SJSU have an in-depth knowledge of structure and surface, materials, furniture, textiles, lighting, and the ability to research and solve problems creatively that pertain to the function and quality of the built environment. The SJSU Interior Design Program is growing their ASID student chapter, and CA Peninsula ASID board members were invited to discuss the association and ASID local chapter with graduating seniors. Board members were warmly greeted by Professor Diane Seah, Victoria Nazloo, ASID student liaison, and the class of over 20 seniors. Jennifer Hale, ASID CA Peninsula President-Elect and Janine Arietta, Emerging Professionals Chair, and Chris Nobriga, Student Representative to the Board shared the “value-add” of an ASID student membership while Amanda Morris, Communications Director and SJSU alumni presented her journey in interior design after graduation. We would like to thank Kevin and Sharon Daroca, Design Mart Silicon Valley and Rose Garrison, Dunn-Edwards for their generous contribution to the student “swag-bags”. Welcome San Jose State University!

Degree: BFA in Interior Design, May 2015.

Degree: : BFA in Interior Design, May 2016.

Favorite Aspect of Design: The knowledge that I am creating a space that can essentially change someone's day to day life by creating a welldesigned atmosphere for them to work, live, and play in. I live by the Charles Eames mantra: "The details are not the details. They make the design”.

Favorite Aspect of Design: There is a solution for everything! I love creating spaces that I would want to be in and that other people would want to experience. I love having design come to life after hours of work. The best thing about working in design is seeing your work make a difference!

Dream job: I would love to grow with my current Interior Design firm, RICCO STYLE and help the firm spread throughout California!

Dream job: I want to have a job where I get to do something I love, and so far, that is what I have! I would love to be able to design by day and come home to a space I love and be able to relax without stressing about work. My ideal job would be working in a collaborative team environment.

Internship/Experience: I’ve been working as an Interior Designer at RICCO STYLE - from June 2014 to present. Awards: I won a 2nd place student award at the 2014 IIDA Honor Awards events. Guilty Pleasures: My favorite thing to do during my free time is obsessively shopping at Home Goods! As well as spending time with my family and boyfriend, relaxing and away from my computer! Guilty! I love watching any of the Real Housewife shows just to get a glimpse of their fabulous homes!

Internship/Experience: : I'm currently an Interior Design Assistant for Cynthia Spence Design. Guilty Pleasures: : I'm a giant tea fanatic. I collect loose leaf teas - I have enough tea to last a lifetime but keep buying more! Of course, I collect any tea accessory such as English style teacups, teaspoons, etc... I love shopping on tea ice cream dates with my friends, and my favorite thing to do with my friends is go to Disneyland!
