In the past, saddles were not mass produced. Every saddle was hand crafted. There are still people who hand make every part of the saddles they sell but that also comes with a hefty price. however they are worth it in the long run. Saddle makers work very hard to keep up with the high demand for specific types of saddles and new materials. As an example, synthetic materials, such as fiberglass instead of wood for the tree is sometimes used because it is lightweight.

probably comes into your mind of a cowboy who is sitting on the back of a horse with a rope, chaps, and a cowboy hat. For months at a time, cowboys would ride on long trails and drives from sunup to sundown. through the nights and days The saddle WAS his pillow.

Saddles today are still made for longevity. Additionally, they are made for rider and horse comfort. The western saddle today is still an important working tool. Many ranchers still go out on horseback to areas that a motorized vehicle cannot go.

Today there are many specialized saddles for specific usage such as barrel racing, cutting, training and team roping to name just a few. No matter what the purpose, the saddle continues to be a most prized possession for any serious cowboy or cowgirl.

However, some things have changed. Among these are barrel racing. In barrel racing a specialized saddle is used. for instance, a long and thin saddle horn is for a rider to hold on to going around a turn. on the other hand, A roping saddle has a low seat to hop off quickly and a short thick saddle horn to wrap a rope around to catch cattle.

Today western saddles still play a large role just as much as they did 100 years ago. The Only things that have changed is their uses in different events. They are still one of the most important pieces of equipment and truly are a necessity.

Horses have been used for centuries as a means of transportation and a way to assist with difficult work. It wasn’t until the English developed a liking for using horses in sporting activities that riding styles began to change. The English riding style, which is considered traditional and “proper,” was brought to America as far back as the 1800s. By that time, the Western style of riding had already taken hold.

The Western riding style can go back as far as the 1600s, where the Spanish ranches in northern Mexico and what is now the Southeastern United States developed a style that suited long hours of hard work. Cowboys spent hours and sometimes days in the saddle driving cattle and working their land. Comfort and utility over elegance were the driving forces in creating a riding style that remains popular today.

Aside from the tack differences, the method of riding also varies between English and Western riding. With English riding, the rider keeps both hands on the reins and directly instructs the horse through the mouth. This type of riding requires skilled coordination between balance, legs, and reins. While the more difficult of the two styles to learn, English riding is easier to transfer to the Western style. In Western riding, the rider uses just one hand to hold the reins and employs neck reining to control the horse.
