The 19th AMENDMENT 2024 election
Younger voting ages?
As a passionate history nerd, I have really enjoyed researching and creating this magazine. I hope my writing can help those explore and learn more about democracy!
Hope you enjoyed!
When the United States was formed, a woman was merely a man’s property. This meant she had no voice and no rights. For decades women’s rights activists fought against the nation to give women the rights they deserve. In 1769 in early American colonies, they ruled by English Law, in which it says “By marriage, the husband and wife are one person in the law. The very being and legal existence of the woman is suspended during the marriage, or at least is incorporated into that of her husband under whose wing and protection she performs everything.” In other words, the husband shall do everything for the woman even speak for her. In 1777 the colonies passed a law stripping woman of their right to vote
This is when the real battle began. 34 days short of a century, in Seneca Falls NY 1843, 300 women and men signed the Declaration of Sentiments, a plea for the end of discrimination against women. As many women and men continue to fight, they find small victories along the way, for example in New York in 1848 the Married Woman’s Property Act was passed, for the first time, a woman isn’t automatically liable for her husband’s debts; she could enter contracts on her own; she could collect rents or receive an inheritance in her own right; she could file a lawsuit on her own behalf.
To have such a strong fight you must have strong leaders Susan B Anthony who lived from 18201906 was a predominate activist and a highly heard voice. Susan spent much of her life working for women’s rights In 1888, she helped to merge the two largest suffrage associations into one large one, it was called the National American Women’s Suffrage Association. She led the group until 1900. During this time she traveled around the country giving speeches, gathering thousands of signatures on petitions, and lobbying Congress every year for woman’s rights. Seen as a victory to some, in 1870 the 15th Amendment is ratified, stating “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State
on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude ” African Americans can now vote, however women still cannot 20 years later, Wyoming becomes the first state to allow women to vote in state elections and by 1900 every state has now passed the Woman’s Property Act. Woman’s activist can start to finally feel the change. The long days and nights of fighting and pushing are finally coming together.
Picking up where Susan left off was Alice Paul. Alice lived from 1885-1977. Alice organized many marches, White House protests, and rallies. These actions led to her getting arrested at least 3 times before the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920. After years of fighting, the 19th Amendment was passed, Alice began working on the guarantee that women would have the Constitutional right to have protection from discrimination. In 1923, she wrote the Equal Rights Amendment, debuting it in Seneca Falls NY, where the first women's rights convention was held in 1848. She was chairman of the Woman’s Research Foundation (1927–1937), and in 1938 she founded and represented at League headquarters in Geneva the World Party for Equal Rights for Women, known as the World Women’s Party
Finally, after 151 years in 1920 the 19th Amendment is ratified! It granted women the right to vote It says, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex ” Though that was a huge victory in history the battle continues to this day
These pictures were a reality for many women who fought for the 19th Amendment
The look 2024 election is coming up on us quicker then we think It is predicted to be a groundbreaking election. Though it is not known for sure the election is likely to be a rematch between President Biden and President Trump. “A rematch would be only the second time in U S history the other was 1892 that an incumbent president faced the former president he defeated in the prior election This rare circumstance will transform the race” (WSJ). This is a huge deal because when one President faces an old president, they each have a record to defend
As many people are starting to see, times are changing. There is a huge worry what the future President will do With highly controversial issues that have been arising many people have no clue who they will vote for. Instead of who will be the best for this country it becomes who will make the least damage.
With the election being almost a year away there are many predictions as to how it will turn out Right now, President Joe Biden leads former President Donald Trump by 1 percentage point, 47% to 46%, in the Quinnipiac poll. What is the Quinnipiac Poll? The Quinnipiac University Poll is a public opinion polling center based at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.
As of resent polls, Trump has 62% support among Republicans, followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, at 12%, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, with 6% Among Trump supporters, 68% said they are set on their candidate choice regardless of what happens. The election is right around the corner, who will YOU vote for?
The day you turned 18 used to be one of the most exciting things You are now an adult! You can vote, you can buy a lottery ticket, go into the military, and used to even be able to by tobacco (not anymore though). The age of 18 is often seen as a marker of adulthood, signifying a level of maturity and responsibility that is considered necessary for making important decisions, including voting in elections.
Lowering the voting age to 16 has been a topic of debate and discussion in various countries around the world.
Advocates argue that this change empowers young people to have a say in the political process earlier, fostering civic engagement and education. They contend that 16-year-olds can make informed decisions and are affected by government policies, especially on issues like education, climate change, and youth employment.
Proponents also argue that a lower voting age would promote political awareness and participation among teenagers, potentially leading to a more inclusive and representative democracy.
Some countries, such as Austria and Scotland, have already implemented this change, allowing 16-year-olds to vote in national elections.
However, critics of lowering the voting age raise concerns about the maturity and political knowledge of 16-year-olds. They argue that young people may be more susceptible to external influences such as peer pressure, family, or social media, which could skew their voting decisions away from their genuine preferences, and less experienced in making informed decisions.
Additionally, there are logistical challenges, such as ensuring that the educational system properly prepares teenagers for their civic responsibilities and that they have access to unbiased information. It's important to note that the debate over lowering the voting age is not without its critics, who raise concerns about the maturity, political knowledge, and potential of countries around the world Advocates argue that this change empowers young people to have a say in the political process earlier, fostering civic engagement and education.
