Reporting Our Progress on
Located in the heart of County Clare along the Wild Atlantic Way, the ancestral home of the O’Briens of Dromoland, whose lineage dates back 1,000 years to Brian Boru, one of the last High Kings of Ireland is lies of Irelands most recognized luxury resorts - Dromoland Castle.
The Castle has a rich history dating back to the 16th century and we are surrounded by woodlands, heritage and lakes on a 500-acre resort.
We have implemented a robust and ever evolving plan to drive the business forward with a commitment to sustainability and protecting the environment having partnered with Beyond Green and Environmental & Social Impact who provide credible auditing and monitoring services benchmarking the Hotels annual performance against stringent criteria.
Our commitment to the environment is at the heart of everything we do. Achieving our sustainable goals is a team effort at Dromoland Castle. As our journey is evolving, we are being noted for industry awards and standard setting.
Our promise as a business is to do all we can to strive towards a more sustainable business placing our social and environmental goals at the forefront of everything we do.
We recognise that our business and heritage has an important role to play in protecting and enhancing the environment for future generations and to help secure the long-term sustainability of Dromoland Castle Resort and its surrounding areas. We will consistently base all our actions on sustainability principles to protect our business and future.
We have been on this journey for many years, and it is a journey of continuous improvement and development. The climate crisis is developing rapidly and as a business we have set out how we can operate with high levels of integrity and respect to the environment.
We will continue to offer our guests a luxurious service and experience at Dromoland Castle and will align our practices to continue this in a sustainable manner.
We are engaging with guests, suppliers & employees to make them increasingly aware of our commitments and actions to help protect the environment, and working with them collaboratively to do so. Our commitment is resolute, and we are constantly monitoring our usage and market developments that may enhance our performance on sustainability across all sectors of the Resort.
As we continue our sustainable journey we will strive for increased recognition and communication to all stakeholders of our business on our achievements.

Step by step eliminating single use plastics as we go through the business. This year we have moved to leather coasters, sustainable timber keycards and our Spa has had a complete overhaul with our vision to the forefront with sustainable products and services.
Benchmarking on carbon footprint and setting targets for reduction thereafter.
Managing our waste is an area we have put a lot of focus on and made a considerable investment in the Joraform Composter which will eventually capture up to 60% of our food waste per annum. This high-quality compost can be used as a peat substitute on our golf course and in our gardens and woodlands. We have also made this available to the local tidy towns groups. Therefore the food waste from our kitchens and plate waste is converted to high quality compost and supports the circular economy.
Our suppliers have all been asked to reduce packaging on all deliveries and use reusable containers where possible with food deliveries and this has been embraced by our suppliers.
The circular economy principle is applied at the Resort by prioritising reuse within the Hotel. If an item can't be repurposed there, we offer it to local yard sales, community groups, and charities, aiming to minimise the amount sent to landfills.
We have introduced many systems and processes on site to reduce our waste for example:
Segregating – wood, metals, carboard, glass, WEE, oils
Single use itemised listings and working on continually eliminating
Segregated bins in bedrooms and throughout the property
Donate left over toiletries to local charity and lost property
All WEE waste managed by Sustainability Department
We monitor and measure our water and have engaged with a professional company to carry out an audit of our water usage on the resort with key recommendations forming our policy to reduce water use on the Resort. We are committed to achieving water efficiency across the Resort. We have our own borehole that provides water on the Resort. We are aware this is a precious commodity and endeavour year on year to make reductions on usage. In 2024 we aim to reduce consumption by 8%.
Over the year we have changed our shower heads and introduced aerators in all our guest bedroom taps. We have a policy in relation to a reporting leaking taps or water wastage which our facilities team repair without delay.
We have introduced many systems & processes on site to reduce our waste for example:
All our chemicals are eco-friendly and fully biodegradable as well as phosphate free in the Hotel.
Rainwater is utilised in our Gardens and we have plans to expand this in 2024.
Plastic water bottles are not used. Bottle refill stations available.
Towel reuse encouraged in guest bedrooms
Consumption monitoring & flows measured
Maintaining our lake in accordance with the habitat & biodiversity of the Resort
Water irrigation system on our golf course which see better management of the resource on the course.
2023 seen a considerable focus being place on energy and our consumption and what we can do better to reduce our energy consumption. We carried out an energy awareness quiz & campaign among staff as well as producing a simple information sheet for staff on how they can reduce energy consumption at home and in their accommodations. All these combined efforts with the assistance of our Green Champions in each of the departments has seen awareness among the team raised which has been a single contributing factor that has reduced our usage year on year by the end of the 3rd quarter by 251120kwh on electricity. Creation of an energy awareness culture and promoting good practice has been of high importance.
We have surpassed our 2023 target of reducing electricity consumption by 10% by achieving a 20% reduction from 2022 to 2023.
We have spent much time in exploring areas of energy consumption and are working on a solar plan for the property currently.

Our location and landscapes where we work, live and welcome our guests are unique and amazing and we want to do everything we can to ensure they remain that way.
The woodland area of Dromoland Castle comprises of 12 acres which offers us unique opportunities to help protect, encourage growth and a playground for animals on the estate to hide away. We have developed a number of walking paths for our guests to enjoy nature.
Dromoland Castle prides itself in our beautiful historic walled gardens,it is now a gloriously colourful, atmospheric and immaculately maintained place, its numerous flowerbeds filled with vividly colourful shrubs, perennials, grasses and roses (including the Lady Ethel Rose) as well as seasonal displays of bedding plants. Low brick walls, stone ornaments and formal clipped yew hedges give structure and a sense of permanence. Today it simply gives us a more beautiful and luxuriant garden to enjoy for all while maintaining the importance of its history.
The current beauty and wellbeing of the walled gardens is very much a testament to the last two decades of loving and careful work by the gardening team supported by investment from the management, but also to the generations of designers and gardeners who have left their imprint in one way or another. Few can step into this lovely enclosure now without being struck by its splendour, or leave without feeling enveloped in a sense of contentment and ease. For many there is an almost spiritual feel to this special place.
We work to preserve the biodiversity of the Estate with our bug hotel, swift boxes, beehives, tree planting, growing our own produce to name but a few.
ANIMALS FOUND ON THE ESTATE BIRDS FOUND ON THE ESTATE TREES FOUND ON THE ESTATE
Fox, Hedgehog, Badger, Rabbits, Red Squirrels, Deer, Frogs Owls, Mute Swans, African Black Swift, Cuckoo, Jackdaw, Bluetit, finch, Pigeon

"To leave the world better than you found it, sometimes you have to pick up other people's trash."
We are members of “leave no trace” & the “all Ireland pollinators plan” and this is visible to our guests as they walk the estate and see the protected areas.
We are on 10-year transition to creeping bent grass on greens from annual meadow grass. Bent grass will require less water and nutrition, so saving on resources.
We have our own herbs grown in our walled gardens and some fruit & vegetables which are delivered directly to our kitchens to be served to our guests.
We recognise that we all learn differently, have different motivations for working and that we never stop learning. Dromoland Castle is more than just a work place; it is a family home. Just as family takes care of all aspects of your wellbeing, at Dromoland we endeavour to do the same for our team. The key to our success and to our guests enjoyment is our amazing team.
We aspire to a working environment that allows everyone to be the best version of themselves to flourish, grow and progress and that is evident in the team our guests meet while staying with us.
As a business we are committed to providing equal opportunities and we are committed to equality, diversity, sustainability & inclusion. Our working environment sees everyone treated with dignity & respect.
Our wellbeing team work is promoting a positive culture in the property and this year have done initiatives like – Menopause talk, Wellbeing talks on addiction & mental health, mindfulness training. We pride ourselves on the longevity of service of our team members. So much so length of service awards start at 10 years. For more information on our team & people see our people section.
As an employer we support the initiatives of Brothers of Charity. Which is an organisation that supports people with disabilities, and we employ a number of members of the brothers of charity to integrate into the workplace and form part of the team at Dromoland Castle. We are proud to use Melody Garm Eggs across the estate. One of the main focuses in Melody Farm Eggs is ethically producing eggs with a superior nutrient profile but also ensuring that the production of those eggs aid the soil and the overall biodiversity of the farm.
The backbone of Melody Farm Eggs is regenerative agriculture. Their hens graze rotationally which helps rebuild the soils organic matter and restore degraded soil biodiversity. Their efforts in the realm of regenerative agriculture have not gone unnoticed, just last November (2020), Joe Melody was crowned Biodiversity Young Farmer of the Year.

Charlotte & Co is an exciting boutique, celebrating Dromoland Castle’s rich connection to textiles which began 100 years ago.
Named after Lady Charlotte, wife of the 4th Baronet Edward O’Brien, the pioneering and practical chatelaine set up an embroidery school in Newmarket-on-Fergus, County Clare in 1822 to empower the local women. Embroidery and lace-making were much in demand at the time and her school proved an enormous success, training 400 women and girls across a decade. Their specialty was whitework, a type of satin-stitch embroidery, using white thread on white fabric. The Embroidery School closed in 1830, as many pupils emigrated to America, using their newly acquired skills to earn their fare for passage The satin stitch which she taught them became known as Lady O’Brien work and some of her designs still exist today. The embroidery school was started up again in the 1840s under Lady Charlotte’s daughter, Grace and again, decades later, by the wife of Charlotte’s grandson. Inspired by some of Charlotte’s old patterns, Florence Vere O’Brien set up lace-making classes in Ennis, reviving a declining business and receiving critical acclaim at the Chicago (1893) and St Louis (1904) World Fairs.
Today, our Charlotte & Co. boutique honours Lady Charlotte’s altruistic spirit while celebrating the very best of contemporary Irish design. Each beautifully made piece reflects Ireland’s rich tradition of craftsmanship and creativity. Drawing inspiration from our past, we’re proud to play our part in helping to sustain Irish design and craft for future generations
Our beautiful curation of Irish designers is now available online too, offering a selection of luxurious gifts for birthdays, special occasions or for those looking to get ahead with their Christmas shopping.

Oonagh O’Dwyer knows her greenery and guests at Dromoland Castle are able to share in this knowledge gleaned on the country roads and chilly surf of County Clare.
Dromoland Castle is right in Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, known for its frigid sea overflowing with fish and shellfish and its high, heathery hills where cows graze on lush grass to create famously creamy butter and cheese. This area has gained recognition on the global food scene in the past few years as more people have discovered the amazing local products grown and caught in the region.
To truly experience the local bounty, Dromoland Castle has launched a foraging experience for guests with local County Clare lady, Oonagh O’Dwyer from Wild Kitchens. Oonagh will take guests down forgotten country lanes and get their hands dirty learning about edible types of roots, herbs, flowers, fruits, and nuts (such as St. John’s Wort, Elderflower and pig nuts) followed by a feast of a wild food picnic in a wildflower meadow.
Next is a trip to the beach for a seaweed walk and a hands-on lesson in harvesting seaweed in the traditional way along with rock samphire and pepper dulse (called the truffle of the sea) all with seals and sea birds populating the backdrop. Oonagh also leads a cooking class showing how to cook and preserve wild food and seaweed (along with tips on how to identify and use wild food at home and some recipes to bring back).
