As he donned his boots and gloves, he caught the sight of an old snow shovel, collecting dust in the garage. “I won’t be needing this anymore,” he thought, as he opened the door and stepped onto a freshly shovelled walkway.

APASSION FORCOMPASSION SECORCares maintains the slogan, “Caring People Caring for People.” They care for and serve those in our community who are in need. They aim to educate the community about suburban poverty and how many in our area struggle with temporary setbacks like a loss of job, divorce, illness, or other circumstances that impact finances. History: SECOR began as a Christmas outreach program. It was started in the 1990s by the Southeast Christian Church in Parker and soon began collecting food donations in a small pantry on the weekends. It has grown so much since their beginning. SECORCares is now its own entity and serves individuals, organizations, and schools in Douglas, Elbert and Arapahoe County, including 42 different zip codes. In 2019, The Solomon Foundation built a beautiful and spacious new facility to house this comprehensive operation. SECORCares is able to rent the space, and the new building serves as a much better fit for their many services. Services: We met with Amy Pfister and had a tour of the new facility and process that guests go through to be a part of the SECORCares benefits. Amy told us how they do not refer to themselves simply as a food bank since there are so many other services available beyond the food. Because walking in the front door is the hardest part to seeking help, guests are welcomed in and are able to shop in the free food market on their first visit. SECORCares has multiple services to offer individuals to help on the first step to rebuild hope in their lives. The aim of SECORCares is to help people get back on their feet. In addition to the free food market, they take bagged food to certain schools for struggling families to eat over the weekend. They also provide financial education, free legal aid, resumé assistance, as well as dental and medical resources. They help people to become self-sufficient and to be able to move forward on their own after some time. About a year and a half ago a sponsor, Christian Brothers Automotive, built a specialized truck to hold containers and food for a portable free food market. This has allowed SECORCares to bring food to those who are unable to come to their building. They stop at schools and senior communities to allow those in need to shop in the mobile market! They partner with multiple food banks and government agencies to provide help. They also have many sponsors in the community like businesses, groups and farmers who have like-minded goals and give food and donations regularly, including Starbucks, Kneaders, Einstein Bagels, and Panera. Numbers: In 2019, SECORCares served 2000 families in their free food market and the mobile market served 23 schools - feeding around 850 families per week. They also made close to 100 visits in 2019 to low income senior housing and school communities. More than 150 volunteers contribute to the service SECORCares offers, as well as nine individuals who work part time or full time for the non-profit organization. How to Help: Members of the community can help the mission of SECORCares in multiple ways. Food and other donations can be collected and brought by individuals or groups. The website contains a wish list for items which are needed most. Monetary donations are also accepted on the website. Another way that people can help is to become a volunteer. Volunteers can sign up for different time slots or commitment levels. There is also a new program for 2020 called “A Family Like This.” Families in the community can donate $96 to SECORCares, who will then provide $600 worth of groceries to a help a local family. The goal is to have 1000 families adopted through this program for the year. The message that SECORCares wants to share with the community is to care for those around us. We have all chosen to make our homes here and send our kids to school and work in this area. It is our responsibility to help our neighbors and take care of those around us. What a beautiful message! For more information, go to secorcares.com. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, SECORCares is currently operating on a drive-thru model to limit exposure and contact. It has been working well. They served 435 families in the first 3 days. They have also also added an emergency relief fund to their website under the "make a donation" tab for extra help during this sensitive time. 6 SEARCHPARKER | APRIL 2020

EDITOR'STAKE COMMUNITY We are in unprecedented times. The global pandemic that is COVID-19 has thrown our world upside down and left us asking more questions than we have answers for. Almost worse than the actual virus itself is the uncertainty of it all - will our economy recover, when will we be able to go back to work to support our family, will we have a job to go back to? For many of the small businesses here in Parker, the answers to those questions could mean certain ruin. In these precarious weeks and months that follow, our instinct might be to gather what's "ours", hunker down, and ride out the storm. We pray the ill effects have a minimal impact on our lives and the lives of those we love. Our will to survive and desire to protect ourselves is a strong force. And of course, Social Distancing is the hottest phrase to come around since YOLO drove us all crazy! But what about our neighbors? How are they doing? Now don't misunderstand me, I am not advocating for civil disobedience in the face of the guidelines that are asking us to responsibly assist in slowing the spread of the virus. I believe it is of the utmost importance and view those that are disregarding it as selfish and/or reckless. But I don't believe this is an issue with only two sides. How can we protect ourselves and still serve our neighbor? How can we solidify our own incomes and help mitigate the effects of this pandemic in our community? I have talked with so many great people over the last several days. People who have been selfless, compassionate heros. They have thought of others before themselves and performed acts of kindness and charity that make our great community so unique. I'm sure there have been countless others that have gone unseen and unheralded as well. Whether it's been ordering dinner at a local restaurant online to make sure they are getting customers, delivering toilet paper to an elderly neighbor, sewing masks for the local hospital, or forgiving debts and financial obligations to ease someone's burdens, the people of Parker are amazing. We are so grateful for the chance to rub shoulders with some of these great people. While this is a trying time, let's remember what wonderful blessings we have around us. The technology of today helps us stay connected during quarantine; the people of our community are second to none; and of course, the amazing gift of time with our families is now something we have in abundance! We are Parker! #PARKERSTRONG 8 SEARCHPARKER | APRIL 2020

A WORD FROM OUR

MAYOR

Hi Parker. I’m Mayor Mike Waid and I wanted to give you a quick update on things around Parker. In these rapidly-changing times, we want you to know the Town is taking several steps to keep our community safe, and I wanted to provide a quick review of our actions over the last week. We continue to partner with Tri-County Health Department, neighboring communities, and state agencies to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak. We’ve also added a central information page to our website at www.ParkerOnline.org/Coronavirus. Here you’ll find the latest Town organizational updates, closures and cancellations, and resources to find assistance and give back. Among those updates, all Town facilities are closed to the public until further notice. While facilities are closed, we are committed to providing core services to our residents, such as police and safety, snow removal, and more. Town staff remain hard at work and are still available by phone and email. We understand this is also a difficult time for our business community. To help you support Parker’s restaurants and bars, we’re compiling a list of establishments providing carryout/delivery and curbside pick-up services. And don’t forget to patronize other local businesses, too, as you are willing and able. Check back to our COVID-19 information webpage and follow the Town’s social media accounts for regular updates. In closing, I just want to remind everyone that the Town is here, continuing to work for you. Thank you for your patience and please stay safe, support each other, and WASH YOUR HANDS. I love you all and we will get through this...TOGETHER.
