As he donned his boots and gloves, he caught the sight of an old snow shovel, collecting dust in the garage. “I won’t be needing this anymore,” he thought, as he opened the door and stepped onto a freshly shovelled walkway.

EDITORSTAKE VICTORIAMARIEJEWELERS We dropped in on Theresa at Victoria Marie Jewelers to see her stunning new location inside the Laszlo Hotel, located at the new West End on Mainstreet. For those that remember the old location, it is a spectacular transformation of the store. The elegant, edgy feel lets you know you have entered a high-end jeweler. Then it is quickly contradicted by Theresa's warm, personal service. You can instantly tell you will be very well taken care of. We got a grand tour of the space and had the chance to sit down with Theresa Hawkins-Garcea, owner and custom jewelry designer. We want to share some of her story. Theresa grew up in Illinois in a family of jewelers. She remembers walking into the kitchen late one night when her father had the table laid out with beautiful gems, reminiscent of Aladdin’s cave. Her parents encouraged her from very young and she had the opportunity to attend G.I.A., the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, California, with her brother in 1986. They took multiple courses of study and Theresa eventually ended up teaching at the Institute. She was able to be involved in creating training videos and spent six weeks working in the laboratory and learning the process for grading diamonds where the actual grading system was created. She says she found her world there at the institute. She later lived in Italy and then lived and owned a jewelry store in Switzerland. She traveled throughout Europe to attend trade shows. Theresa has over forty years of experience in the jewelry business. She has been in every aspect of the industry and brings this expertise to her store. Theresa’s siblings and cousins have also been involved in the jewelry world. She is grateful for the relationships and the experience and vision she has gained to help her to serve her clients. When Theresa was ready to open her store in Colorado, she decided to name it Victoria Marie Jewelers. Victoria Marie is the name her father chose for his first jewelry business in the 1970s. Her sister’s name is Victoria Dawn and she is Theresa Marie, so it was inspired by his daughters. Theresa wanted to honor her family and the support they have always given her, so she used the same name. It was originally located right off Mainstreet, on Victorian Drive. The store was there for over seven years before their recent move. Victoria Marie Jewelers presents multiple high-end offerings. A number of jewelry collections from a variety of designers will immediately catch your eye, including some local artists. Great care is taken to provide quality and special pieces. Collections come from both historic jewelry families, as well as new and innovative artists. Their engagement consultation space and bridal offerings have expanded and have already taken off. Jeff Schmidt, Theresa’s partner, designed much of the new space and is excited to offer Leffy’s Cigar collection. Their specially designed, state-of-the-art, walk-in humidor is cooled and humidified to keep freshness and quality. They also offer William Henry knives, which are incredible works of art, with multiple artists working on each piece. Theresa described the knives' metals, natural elements, and decorative techniques included on each. Theresa took us through multiple jewelry and display cases and told us the history of companies, the stories of designers, and the techniques and inspiration behind individual pieces. It was a fascinating and impressive experience. She has a passion for her craft and an incredible depth of knowledge. She described how her role is being a translator – to take each clients’ thoughts, hopes, and desires and put them into a wearable piece of art. In dreaming of a new space, she wanted to pay homage to her roots, which speak to jewelry being an art. She says she had a clear vision of the feeling she wanted in the new store. She hopes that when people walk in, they will feel they’ve walked into a fine jewelry establishment without feeling stuffy. She has done just that. It is a beautiful testament to her love of what she does. We are lucky to have such an accomplished and passionate jeweler here in Parker. Victoria Marie Jewelers has become a local staple, and Theresa is our very own diamond in the rough! 8 SEARCHPARKER | FEBRUARY 2020

HISTORYHASHTAG HISTORIC RHODE ISLAND HOTEL Most of us in Parker know Fika on Mainstreet. What you might not know is a bit of Parker history, as Fika is housed in what was once the Rhode Island Hotel. Also called the Rhode Island House, Goddard Hotel and/or the Parker Hotel, the Rhode Island Hotel was built for Martin and Nellie Goddard in 1906 and opened on Thanksgiving Day. It was luxurious for the time, boasting steam heating, acetylene lighting, hot and cold water on both floors and a built-in sanitary system. After several successful years, Martin invested in the Cherry Creek Telephone Company and the hotel became the town telegraph office in 1913. It wasn’t all good luck, as the hotel basement flooded in 1912 and a fire destroyed the livery stable as well as all the Cherry Creek Telephone Co. wire and supplies stored there in 1917. The next year, Martin Goddard died, although there is no record of the exact date. Mrs. Goddard, arguably one of Parker’s biggest boosters, died in 1924. She is buried in an unmarked grave next to her husband in Parker Cemetery. The Rhode Island Hotel has had several owners over the years, most notably, Charlie O’Brien. He operated a hardware store, liquor store, and real estate office in the building. Over the years, the hotel became ensconced in the present building and if you look from across the street, you can make out the front dormer. From the rear, you can clearly see the outline of the original building. For more information about Parker History, visit ParkerHistory.org 10 SEARCHPARKER | FEBRUARY 2020

LOVEANDMARRIAGE Falling in love - I don't really like that phrase. Don't get me wrong, I am a romantic who is desperatley in love with my wife. But "falling" in love denotes lack of effort and intent on our part. Wouldn't it also hold true then, that you could fall "out" of love without any choice in the matter? I don't think that's right. Marriage and love take work. Amber talked with a local couple who has over 62 years of experience living the dream of a happy marriage. Marriage.....Marriage is what brings us together today. In reflecting on love during the month of February, we wanted to highlight a couple whose love has stood the test of time. Pat and Curtis Dale, local Parker residents, have been married for 62 years. While visiting with Pat and Curtis, they shared their story with me and their thoughts on how they have made their marriage a success. They both grew up in Dunbar, West Virginia, and first met when they were 13 and 15 when a mutual friend sent Curtis to Pat’s door. A few years later, in 1955, Curtis went off to college. They began dating the summer after his freshman year of college and Pat’s junior year of high school. Pat says they decided not to go steady, but then ended up going out the next 30 days in a row. They continued to go out any time Curtis came home during his sophomore year and Pat’s senior year. Curtis earned the West Virginia Aviation award that year and it became the down payment for Pat’s ring. They got engaged the night before Pat graduated from high school in May of 1957, and they were married a couple months later, on July 15, 1957. She tells how getting married younger was common then. She felt that kids had a lot more responsibility and she and Curtis were ready to be committed. They have certainly proven that. Curtis joined the Airforce right out of college, going from a one room schoolhouse when growing up to becoming a Colonel in the Airforce for many years. They moved around to live on many Airforce bases, including in Texas, Wyoming, Alaska, Hawaii, California, New Mexico, and in the Philippines. Their first daughter was born a year after marriage, and then they adopted in Texas in 1964. Pat had two more children in 1967 and 1969. They went on to adopt two more in the Philippines in 1983 and 1984 and adopted their last in Texas in 1993. Pat and Curtis now have three daughters, four sons, 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. After 27 years living on bases, they retired here to Colorado at age 47 and 49. There was an adjustment to civilian life and to being home together. They were both independent and had to be up to that point. Pat teased how the Colonel wanted to take over at home, but the General wouldn’t let him. She shared how through the years when Curtis came home from assignments, he chose to spend time with the family instead of heading off on his own. He was a peacemaker in their marriage. Pat described how after coming home from Vietnam, Curtis had a hard time and was angry. She said it took time to work through and she fought very hard for their marriage, which was a challenge for many returning from Vietnam at the time. She said he was worth fighting for. When asked about their secrets to success, Curtis said, “Both of you have to maintain your independence, but it always has to end up in complete unity.” He shared these thoughts: “Feelings will be hurt in marriage, intentionally or unintentionally. So, be very slow to criticize and very quick to forgive. Pat and I haven’t been married for 62 years because of any perfection, but because we have stood together, worked together, and were willing to give and take. Love and commitment have deepened all the way.” Pat shared how she feels like one of the big reasons for their success in marriage is that they allowed each other to live their dreams. Curtis fulfilled his dream of being in the Airforce and traveling all over the world, and Pat achieved her dream of having a house full of kids. Pat said she also contributes success to total commitment to each other. It is an inspiration to see a love and commitment that has lasted a lifetime, through all the ups and all the downs. They share a powerful message – just because things are hard, don't give up, and keep working to make it through.

It was the best day of my life, I just wish I had enjoyed it even more! Think about your wedding day - the months of planning that go into it, the perfection to each detail you stress over (ok it was my wife that stressed over them), the gathering in one place of every person that means something in your life. Then with the blink of an eye, it's over. That day, that moment in time that will change your life forever, passes so quickly. You get one chance to make it an unforgetable memory. The significance of our wedding day never fades; we celebrate it yearly to rememeber and commemorate the experience. With so much at stake, we took a look at some of the great venues around that help make this day the dream wedding your bride has always wanted and deserves.
