ANGIE RODRIGUEZ
8 SEARCHPARKER | JANUARY 2020
TRIUMPHOVERTRAGEDY If you have the opportunity to sit down with Angie Rodriguez and hear her amazing story, do it. Angie, who grew up in Castle Rock and now lives in Parker and co-owns Twenty Mile CrossFit, as well as Studio 40, a T-shirt and promotional company. She has two girls, 9 and 13. Angie had been involved in CrossFit for nearly 5 years and was in great shape when a tragedy occurred in her life. She described the horrible events, as well as so many people who made such a difference to her along the way. Angie was with some friends in Colorado Springs in March of 2016 and was walking in a cross walk when a drunk driver hit and ran her over. The driver then backed over her to see what had happened and ran over her a third time as she sped off. An off-duty EMT stopped to help Angie as she went into shock. Angie heard the ambulance and remembers being freezing. She woke up in the hospital with a tube in her throat and a splintered memory of the event. She had suffered many injuries: deflated lungs, seven broken ribs, a torn shoulder, a dislocated hip, injured knees, no use of her left hand, and almost lost her foot. Doctors told Angie that being in great shape helped her to survive and eventually get back to health. She had a very long road ahead of her, but she felt so much support from her church, from the community, and from the gym. She had dinners brought to her family for months. Friends and family took care of her girls, people brought Easter baskets to her girls, and so many other countless acts of outpouring love from the community. Angie says she knows that God was watching out for her and her girls. Due to her many injuries, she had to live at a rehab center for months. The Center at Northridge in Westminster was just opening and Angie was their first and only patient at the time. Because of this, she was able to spend extra time with trainers and nurses. She was well taken care of and felt so loved. She became close to the nurses and staff. She attributes the mindset needed for recovery to her fitness experience. She knew how to set goals and see progress little by little. She remembers how it took her ten minutes when the nurses asked her to scoot to the end of the bed, but she knew she could do it. Eventually she was able to go home, first in a wheelchair, then using a cane. She would go to visit the gym to see people and slowly began to try small exercises, like lifting with one arm or deadlifting 6” off the floor. Then she began doing modified moves and slowly increasing levels. After multiple surgeries, physical therapy for nearly two yeras, and continued slow progress at the gym, she reached even better health than before the accident. Angie attended her first powerlifting competition this year and holds the state record for her age and weight! Looking back now, Angie says she wouldn't change it. She talks about how so much good has come from her experience and sharing her story. She has learned about faith, family, forgiveness, prayer, friends, and strength. She showed her girls how to work through something as they walked through it with her. She was incredibly grateful to see how much people loved her and her family. To experience that kind of love was such a blessing. She reflects on her mindset and perspective of gratitude. She decided not to let this define her and not to focus on the negative. Angie says to start each day with purpose, fall in love with the journey, and "Just don’t stop. If you are told that you won’t be the same, that you can’t..., if you fail a million times, just don’t stop. Keep going. You don’t know what is on the other side of not stopping, and once you get there and see it, it’s probably better than what you thought it would be. Inspiration is the best mark you can leave on another human. You don’t know who is watching you, so don’t stop. Someone may be depending on you to keep them going!”

SUPPORTLOCAL 3rd ANNUAL "SOCKS OF LOVE" CAMPAIGN Socks. Simple, right? Yet most of us take them for granted. But did you know that each and every year, they are the least donated item to homeless shelters, yet they are vital to the community. Socks keep our feet warm, dry and free from disease. While most of us donate our gently used clothes, socks are overlooked. Why? Oftentimes, charities cannot accept used socks for sanitary reasons and buying new socks doesn’t enter our mind. As the chillier air sets in, the need is greater than ever. That’s why this year, Footprints to Recovery is kicking off its 3rd Annual Socks of Love Campaign in hopes of collecting 10,000 pairs of socks. The socks will be accepted both at our donation center as well as online. Socks will then be dispersed by our alumni to the Samaritan House Homeless Shelter. Donation Drop Off @ Footprints to Recovery: Alcohol & Drug Outpatient Treatment Facility (PHP, IOP, OP) 6505 S Paris St, Centennial, CO 80111 Shelter Delivery Date: Wed., January 15th, 2020

HAIRCOLOREXPERTS This classy and stylish salon was started in Parker in May of 2005. It first opened next door to Kohls. Betty and Joe Daniels originally started Hair Color Xperts as a franchise. After only 6 months as a franchise, the corporate office went out of business and the Daniels bought the rights to the name as their own store. They have built their brand and specialized their skills ever since! They have been in their new, larger location off Parker Road in the High Point building for almost 6 years. The Daniels have lived in Parker since 1988 when there was only one traffic light. They moved here from Des Moines, Iowa. They have a daughter, who has been part of their business, and now have a son-in-law and three granddaughters. After 20 plus years in computer management and sales, they decided to switch to being business owners. Their neighbor was part of the company and convinced them to get involved. Joe and Betty described how one of their favorite parts of being in this business is creating relationships, especially teaching and nurturing their employees. Hair Color Xperts has many employees that have worked with them for years, including one who has been there from the beginning. They invest a lot to educate each one and to help build a clientele base. They send employees to shows in Denver and bring in international stylists to teach in the salon. Some have even gone on to start their own salons in different cities. Hair Color Xperts specializes in precision cuts and fabulous color. They are a distributor of Wella Professionals, the worldwide leader in hair color. They provide climazone machines for clients during coloring to speed up the process so there is no double booking. They work hard to know the latest and greatest and receive the first trainings in new technology. With this month’s theme of New Beginnings, we asked what is new in the hair and beauty world. Wella will celebrate their 140th birthday in 2020 and will be releasing a new retail line called Color Motion + in the summer. The big color trends in hair right now are varied shades of red to auburn and champagne blonde. Hair Color Xperts will also be getting new colors that have PPD removed, so allergic reactions will not be a concern. Finally, they will be receiving training on a new trend in coloring from Brazil. There are a lot of exciting styles to try! Enjoy a new look in the new year at Hair Color Xperts. 12 SEARCHPARKER | JANUARY 2020

Subject: Male, age 46 / 6'1" / 235 pounds. Previous routine was heavy weight training. But I recently haven't been doing anything so Planet Fitness got me back in the gym. My goal is to look better and feel better.
S M t I
Planet Fitness has been an amazing gym to go to. I love how unintimidateding the facility is and how friendly the staff always is. I love how I've gotten into much better shape and look forward to working out. I got a thing called the Black Card membership and I love that it gives me free access to massage chairs and hydro massage tables. I feel better and look better all thanks to Planet Fitness.
W m h fi c b I e I s m w p f
One of the best things about Planet Fitness is they are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That fits into everyone's schedule! And the cost is great, probablly the best in the area. It is very clean and welcoming no matter the time of day you go in to work out.
I
t's the new year and 99% of, well, everybody, has a fitness goal of some kind. Lose weight, get in shape, be active, or just be able to keep up with the grandkids. It seems to be on everyone’s resolution list. We at Search Parker wanted to help! We sent out six test subjects to join a new gym in the area, and then report back as to what they found. While we weren't able to experience every gym locally, we hope this gives you a snapshot of the many great and diverse options available to us here in Parker. Our 6 volunteers "take" on their month-long trial spans a variety of exercise types, so there is something for everyone. Hopefully, this will help us all keep those new year's resolutions longer than the typical 3 week stint!

9 ROUND Subject: Female, age 41 / 5'3" / 136 pounds. I exercise 4-6 times per week, mostly aerobic. My goals are to build muscle, lose 5 pounds, and to learn kickboxing.
S I s
I really enjoyed my trial at 9-Round. The heart rate monitor let me see my intensity level while working out and helped to keep me going. I love the 30-minute circuit because it's intense, but is also a very doable time commitment. I could go in any time during business hours instead of needing to plan around a set class time. With 3-minute rotations, you can jump right in. I worked mostly with Lauren and Isabelle, who were really friendly and helped to teach and push me. The workout itself was exciting and fun with nine kickboxing rotations. In between are other exercises for different muscle groups. I enjoyed the intensity and the huge variety that was built in to every day. I loved actually practicing kicking and hitting the bags or pads. I lost 3-4 pounds in the 4 weeks. It was a great experience!

CLUB PILATES
BURN BOOT CAMP
Subject: Female, age 47 / 5'3" / 143 pounds. My goals were to try something new, take advantage of the time I had by learning and experiencing as much as I could. What a wonderful experience I had at Club Pilates; so much so, I plan to continue my membership without hesitation. I feel like I have found the type of exercise that finally fits my needs. An exercise that builds whole body and core strength, increases balance, and doesn't bulk you up but rather leans you out. By the end of my first half hour, I was comfortable with the expectations and use of the equipment. Prior to this trial, I was not finding anything that I enjoyed and offered the benefits of pilates. I actually am starting to see muscles in my legs, arms and back and feel muscles and strength in places I never expected. By the way, I went to P.T. for over 6 weeks and never had relief of pain for a neck issue. After two weeks of pilates, I am pain free and have full range of motion. Great rehabilitation.
POWER MIXX FITNESS Subject: Male, age 44 / 5'11" / 220 pounds. I currently exercise 4-6 times per week, mostly playing sports. My goals for the trial are to slim and tone. Power Mixx was nothing like I expected. Rather than the typical workout of going all out, Melissa (the owner and my instructor) had me slow things way down with every movement. It kicked my butt. I was sweating and my muscles were shaking within ten minutes. None of the exercises were too difficult to learn, and Melissa walked me through proper technique to ensure I was trageting the correct muscles. Class sizes are small which ensures you get personalized attention to detail. I was amazed how many of my classes had instructors from other local gyms in them. There were also several former athletes that were rehabing. Overall, this is a great option to add to your exercise routine. It's different, but effective.
Subject: Female, age 60 / 5'8" / 148 pounds. No workout schedule recently except for hiking on the weekends. My goals are mostly to do with strength, cardio and flexibility, not weight loss. I've noticed as I've aged that I lose strength and cardio very quickly. Burn Bootcamp in Parker is probably by far the best group exercise gym I've been to. This gym is a great place for a cardio workout. The instructors keep things moving. I found the workouts to be definitely challenging, but the whole idea at this gym is that each person is working at their own pace. There was a wide range of abilities, ages, fitness and strengths in the people taking each class. Most of the classes are only for women, which I thought was a huge plus. The environment is very non-judgmental. The best part of this gym for myself, was that I met some of the nicest women who are becoming my friends. I'd say this is the happiest gym I've ever been to. I'd say it's worth every penny.
INTELLIGENT MOTION THERAPY Subject: Female, age 46 / 5'7" / 140 pounds. I have been active throughout my life. I enjoy working out, especially if it means I can be outside! I have been struggling to continue at my normal level of activity as my arthritis is worsening. I typically run, bike, and strength train six days a week. I am hoping that yoga will help with my range of motion and strength, so I can continue with my normal activities comfortably. Not only did I realize my goals with yoga, but I also found this addition brought some quiet time to my day. It is difficult for me to slow down during a busy day and my instructor did a great job of facilitating this, as well as helping me to focus during our classes. This unexpected result was as good for my spirit as the workout was good for my sore joints. I plan to continue practicing yoga, as I hope this will help me continue to enjoy running long term! DREAMBIG A new year brings with it hope and promise. It is a chance to look to the future with all its possibilities and untold moments. It is a fresh start. Our theme for this issue, New Beginnings, reflects just that. This is the perfect time for recommitment and refocus to becoming better and more of who we want to be. Setting goals is a January tradition for many and can help us on our renewed journey. The sentiment from time management author, Diana Shcarf Hunt, that “goals are dreams with a deadline,” sheds light on how goals help us put ideas into action. When beginning our plan of action let us take inspiration from Pia Silva. In her forbes.com article, “3 Absolute Musts To Be Successful At Goal-Setting,” she discusses the need to start first at why we want a goal and what we hope to feel in the end. Sometimes recognizing the why behind it will alter our inspiration and change the actual goal. She also discusses how goals like “make more money” or “be healthier” can be too vague and uninspiring. The big picture inspiration needs to be broken down into the smaller steps to become a reality. Let us share these tips on setting smart goals from ourmindfulllife.com: #1 Set specific goals: Clear and well-defined #2 Set measurable goals: Can be valued precisely #3 Set attainable goals: Possible to achieve #4 Set relevant goals: Aligned with your personal life #5 Set time-bound goals: Have a deadline Like C.S. Lewis said, “You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream.” The dreams for our life are realized one step and one goal at a time, so start yours anew today.

Autumn is the best!! She is very professional and great with detail! I feel like I am her friend as well as client. I will be back for sure and have recommended Autumn to a number of friends who just love my hair. ~ Tonja This is a great salon, very clean, nice environment and great service. ~ Cindy Lena is always amazing. She asks questions and makes recommendations to ensure you’re always happy with your cut and/or color. The front desk staff is great as well. I’m always promptly greeted with a smile and offered a beverage. If you watch the staff interact they communicate well and all seem to be willing to jump in and help each other out. This is a great salon and I would highly recommend! ~ Julie
