Elm Street DREAM Monthly Snapshot February 2013 Program Happenings and Highlights • In honor of National Mentoring Month, Elm Street mentors were thanked for all their service with a celebration at the South Burlington DREAM Office. A special thank you goes to Ben and Jerry’s for their support with this event. • Five Elm Street mentors and eight teens enjoyed a wintry day of fun at Camp DREAM for this year’s Teen Winter Adventure Camp. Activities included crossbroomball and commando, the DREAM version of Capture the Flag in the woods, involving scrolls, mega-scrolls, and other epic adventure elements. • Sixteen Elm Street youth attended Winter Adventure Day at Camp DREAM. Winter Adventure Day is an annual DREAM office hosted event for DREAM youth between the ages of 8 and 12. Activities included broomball, sledding, crosscountry skiing, and snowshoeing. • On the 9th mentors participated in a retreat day where they talked about cultural differences, poverty issues, and child behavior management tips and tricks. A special thank you goes to Planned Parenthood of New England for donating the space for this event. • The Elm Street program welcomed fifteen new mentors to help fill the void that will be left by this year’s graduating seniors. Weekly Programming with Children • • • •
Current Elm Street mentors hosted small group activities to help newly recruited mentors get to know the program and the mentees. Due to the large snowfall in the Burlington area, DREAM was cancelled on February 8th. Mentors and mentees got groovy with a day of Zumba in the Davis Center. Mentors and mentees enjoyed a taste of summer fun with a day of swimming at the YMCA pool.
