his month has been a real eye opener with a string of new bars popping up mainly across Glasgow, and some in Edinburgh which has been great to see and even better to visit. From a new Mexican on Sauchiehall Street in the form of Juan Chihuahua to new burger rival Bread Meats Bread in the city centre, it’s certainly been busy in the West this month. Whereas in the East, Boteco Do Brasil has just opened and is this months bar browser on pages 24 and 25. You will find all the news for your area on our news pages on 4-8. Talking of burgers we decided to pay tribute to the array of burger joints in Glasgow and Edinburgh. We picked some of the best in each city, and even took part in a Kilo Burger Challenge in Strata. You can see our top picks and how we fared in the challenge on pages 13-15. This month’s interview is with Duncan Frew who is the man behind Badaboom and newly opened Skinny’s on Otago Street, Glasgow. He talks us through his entrepreneurial journey on pages 16 and 17. On the drinks front it’s all about festive serves and cocktails and very tasty they look too. Winter warmers and festive cocktails are the flavour of choice and we talk you through some of the best serves out there. Have a gander at page 19 to find a tipple for the winter months. From bungee jumps to singing waiter gigs I’ve been keeping busy too and you can read in full in Lynn’s corner on page 30. Let’s see what I can get up to for next month... News Novel bottle from Drambuie

Drambuie has introduced its first ever limited-edition bottle for the Christmas season inspired by its ‘A Taste of the Extraordinary’ marketing campaign. The shrinkwrapped, striking black and white zig-zag pattern is the first of its kind. The bottle may be unique and different, but the blend of Scotch whisky, spices, and heather honey is the same. The brand is also promoting a new cocktail for winter called the Hot Apple Toddy – 50ml of Drambuie, 150ml apple juice, a cinnamon stick, cloves, 20ml of sugar syrup and 25ml lemon juice. You heat all the ingredients except for the Drambuie – and strain the hot ingredients over the Drambuie instead. Sounds lovely.

Happy 14th

The Bier Halle on Glasgow’s Gordon Street celebrated its fourteenth birthday last month and what a party it was. More than 200 people headed along to the bar to enjoy the festivities. Complimentary beer and sliders kept guests happy with Lee Marvin of ‘Funktion At The Junction,’ and The Earl from ‘Solid Gold Safari’ providing the tunes for the big day. It’s hard to believe that this, one of the original craft beer bars, is 14 already!

The stylish bar has a London look and it is already proving a hit with westenders. It boasts the most comfortable bar stools in the city, a funky cocktail tap which serves up a variety of bespoke creations and its one of the only bars in Scotland to offer Heineken extra cold – the frozen fonts look amazing on the bar. On the food front you can find dishes ranging from beef bourguignon, to Cullen skink and fish & chips. There are also a range of sandwiches available. News Look out for the Panda

Posher fish and chips

T

he brimming Finnieston area of Glasgow now has an upmarket fish and chip cafe, called Old Salty’s. It’s situated next to the Crabshakk and across the road from the Kelvingrove Cafe and Gannet on Argyle Street. Old Salty’s is a trendy take on a traditional cafe, with a shabby chic exterior and cosy, modern interior. The posh chippy is open early, and as well as a fried breakfast provides standard and alternative ‘chippy fayre’ including traditional fish and chips, pie and haggis suppers, scallops, corned beef hash, and plenty of chips.

Flying over to the West End

If you are a fan of the Butterfly and Pig in Glasgow’s Bath Street you will be pleased to hear that there is now a Butterfly and Pig in the West End too. The former Inn at the Cross is now a Butterfly and Pig West End and also boasts the same ‘shabby-chic’ treatment as its Bath Street sister venue. The menu too, is similar which has some great traditional Scottish dishes with a twist.

WINTER WARMER

Newly crowned ‘Legend,’ Iain McPherson is to uncover his very secretive speakeasy venue in Edinburgh’s West End this month. But it’s wont be an easy one to find, with customers having to work to find the venue, known as Panda and Sons. Iain – who recently received the Legend Award at the inaugural Scottish Bartenders Network – and his team have worked with Edinburgh illustrator, Via Fang to develop the logos and pictures you’ll need to uncover to find where you’re going. Fusing the classic prohibition style speakeasy, with a nod to the vintage barber shop, would be customers can expect a vast wine list and selection of craft beer, as well as bites to eat. The venue claims to be the “quirkiest thing” to hit Edinburgh’s drinking scene, with cocktails designed to visibly excite and have your taste buds tingling. Once open, Panda and Sons will operate as a speakeasy under the disguise of a vintage barber shop. So, once customers see the Panda logo, they know they have come to the right place.

Nothing quite says Christmas like a mulled wine or cider by the pub fire, and Rekorderlig have seized on that this winter season, increasing investment on their Winter Cider. The drink was introduced last winter with it’s warm serve proving a real hit with consumers. This year Rekorderlig have invested £2million on its first ever advertising campaign for the flavour. Made with apples and infused with cinnamon and vanilla, Winter Cider serving suggestions focus heavily on its innovative hot serve - the flavour can be heated up in one of the unique branded urns and served in Rekorderlig’s bespoke tankard with a slice of orange. The flavour will be available until March next year. 6

1912 is a hit

Bathgate has a new bar to be proud of, with the Nineteen Twelve at the iconic former dance hall proving a real hit. The fully refurbished building, which previously sat derelict for three years, is perfect for those who want the city bar experience but don’t want to have to go into Edinburgh or Glasgow. Providing up to 70 covers, the Nineteen Twelve offers unique, high quality beers, wines and spirits, providing to a niche market in the town. The sandstone building is now refreshed by a beautifully modern three-wall glass front and sits close to the train station, sandwiched between the town’s theatre and stunning modern library.

Johnnie Walker going for gold

Everyone likes to see gold when they open a present at Christmas and that’s exactly what Johnnie Walker are playing on with the release of their eye-catching limited edition Gold Label Reserve bottle. The iconic square bottle has been coated with a beautiful golden lacquer, giving an exceptional gold bullion effect, making it stand out in any bar or club this yuletide. It also makes a wonderful gift. You can send one to me here at Rep HQ, Upper Floor... A new mobile app has been launched to help people find the best bar near to where they are. Launched by the team behind the Drink Advisor website, the app covers bars and clubs in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as a host of cities down south. Available for free, the new Drink Advisor app was launched in early November for Android and Apple devices.

Red Leg heats things up Wine and spirit makers, Blavod have launched a new line of cocktail recipes for their spiced rum, RedLeg. The premium Caribbean rum uses vanilla and ginger to capture its unique spice. Now they want to showcase the drink’s versatility, providing warming cocktails for the winter season, like their ‘Hot Rum Slap’. Another cocktail is their ‘Apple Shack’, using of 25ml RedLeg, 25ml Apple Juice, a dash of cinnamon gomme, and a splash of ginger beer, with a slice of lime to garnish. Our favourite here was the ‘Hot Rum Slap’ though, which was made up of half ginger beer, half cloudy apple juice, 10ml cinnamon gomme, 25ml RedLeg rum.

Devil’s Advocate

The Devil’s Advocate in Edinburgh is one of the newest bars to have opened in the Capital. There is also a good selection of bottled craft beers, ciders and some tasty cocktails. The Devil’s Advocate is at 9 Advocate’s Close, Edinburgh. 7

BEST BURGER AT BUDDY’S There was good news for Southside burger-mongers, Buddy’s BBQ & Burgers after being crowned Glasgow’s Best Burger 2013. Perfect timing as they have just opened their new American style diner on Pollokshaws Road. In winning the title, Buddy’s knocked rivals, Grill on the Corner off the top spot.

Kohli takes over Koolba

Glasgow’s Koolba restaurant has a new owner, with writer, actor, and Masterchef finalist, Hardeep Singh Kohli taking over the venue. Hardeep has been working with the Candleriggs venue for a number of months, but made the news official in October. To mark the occasion, the venue has launched a new menu featuring less obvious Indian dishes, they claim to be delicious. And during the October week, family and friends were able take advantage of Hardeep’s Curry Clinic for no extra charge or tickets. 8

Christmas Cocktails

The Slug and Lettuce bar in Edinburgh has launched a new winter drinks menu to boost their cocktail list this festive season. The new mini menu features the new ‘Baileys Lux’ which is packed full of real Belgian chocolate and served in an elaborate, goblet like glass. Cocktails are a key driver to the Slug and Lettuce business and hot drinks will be included on the menu. Those include a ‘Winter Pimm’s’ and a ‘Hot Blackberry and Elderflower Pimm’s,’ both served in a glass teapot with a stylish red and white tea cosy.

Lighting up Glasgow Football agent, Gerry Carlile has spearheaded the refurbishment and takeover of 212 in Glasgow’s city centre, with his new club, Light which opened earlier this month. The club oozes style and

sophistication and has been completely transformed from top to bottom. This is definately the club to be seen in.

Smirnoff Gold

Diageo have launched Smirnoff Gold to its flavoured vodka range with a hint of natural cinnamon and edible 23 carat gold leaf garnishing. The gold topped bottle is aimed at the higher end of the market. But there is still a nod to the UK’s best selling spirit, the Smirnoff Red, with Smirnoff No.21 premium vodka used as the base for the new drink. The launch is supported by a £4.5m advertising campaign aimed at consumers seeking new flavours.

Men are from mars, Women are from venus How do you know when a woman is about to say something smart? When she starts her sentence with, “A man once told me...” Men have two emotions, hungry and horny. If you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich. Women are like roads. The more curves they have, the more dangerous they are. Scientists have discovered a food that diminishes a woman’s sex drive by 90%. It’s called a wedding cake. What is the mating call of a blonde? I’m so drunk. What is the mating call of a brunette? Is that blonde gone yet? What is the mating call of a redhead? NEXT!

Some people think having large breasts makes a woman stupid. Actually, it’s quite the opposite: a woman having large breasts makes men stupid. If at first you don’t succeed then you are probably a man. Men are like commercials, you can’t believe a word they say. Men are like buses… if you miss one another one will be coming in 5 minutes. Men are like bank accounts, without money they don’t generate a lot of interest. Menstrual cramps, mental illness, mental breakdowns…ever notice that all of your problems begin with men? If they can send a man to the moon why can’t they send them all? If you want to give a guy a compliment, just tell them that they are good at video games. The more I see of men, the more I admire dogs… It doesn’t matter how often a married man changes his job, he still ends with the same boss. The best way to get a man to do something is to suggest they are too old for it.

BURGER OFF

Words: Fraser Wilson

Burgers have become the talk of the town with numerous bars and restaurants now specialising in the American favourite. Shows like Man vs. Food, endlessly repeated on various digital channels, have shown sumptuous, extravagant, and challenging variations of the food, with screen shots of perfectly cooked beef dripping with its own juice, guacamoles, barbecue sauces, mustards, gherkins, and luscious vegetables. Even just writing this has us salivating. So, we have taken on the unenviable, selfless, and expensive task of trying out some of the best around to recommend to you. But we haven’t just gone for flavour and value, oh no. We’re looking at imagination, atmosphere, setting, customer service, and suitability for the occasion too.

OFF HOLYROOD 9A 9A Holyrood Road, Edinburgh EH8 8AE T: 0131 556 5044 www.theholyrood.co.uk

Located near Arthur’s Seat, Holyrood 9A has no fewer than 17 burgers on offer. These arrive on wooden boards encased in a toasted sour dough bun, topped with dill pickle, beef tomato, and lettuce with coleslaw and fries on the side. Sour dough buns can be changed for warm brioche buns and fries swapped for piri-piri fries, grilled chunky chips or sweet potato fries. A personal favourite at Repertoire is the ‘Chilli Death’ burger, which showcases pickled jalapeños, chilli cheese, fresh green chillies, sour cream and ‘death’ sauce. There is a brilliant mix of alternatives for everyone, including pork, venison, haggis, and a number of vegetarian burger patties. The ‘Falaffel’ serves up shredded carrot, red onion, crème fraiche and hot chilli sauce, whilst the ‘Pioneer’ provides sautéed rosemary, wild mushrooms, crispy bacon, Swiss cheese and garlic mayo. A brilliant selection, Holyrood 9A is a busy, haunt with a great variety of drinks to wash down your burger of choice.

wannaburger 7/8 Queensferry St, Edinburgh EH2 4PA T: 0131 220 0036 www.wannaburger.com

Less than three quid for a burger? And you say it’s good? Really?” Well that’s exactly the chat surrounding Wannaburger in Edinburgh, who have been feeding hungry customers for years with minimal fuss, serving up fresh fast food burgers made to order. They offer eight burgers, including three 100% Borders’s bred Scotch Beef, two chicken and three vegetarian. A double bacon cheeseburger will cost you £5.49, whilst a single costs between £2.99 and £3.99, with sides such as fries an extra £1.59. But, with free toppings available to add to your burger, Wannaburger is certainly value for money. Drinks range from soft drinks, wine, West Brewery beer, with specialist shakes on offer as well. Kitted out similar to an American diner, this is not finedining, but does offer high quality fast food, waiting less than 10 minutes from ordering to collecting food, all the while watching burgers being prepared from the open kitchen.

With all this talk of burgers we decided to go one better and take on a burger challenge for ourselves and after some deliberation we opted for the Kilo Burger challenge at Strata. You can see from the photo how huge this creation is which comes with chips, coleslaw and onion rings to boot which all has to be eaten within an hour. So did we conquer the Kilo Burger? Sadly not but it was delicious. Apparently only one chap called Davros has defeated the burger challenge here but anyone can get in touch with the venue and arrange a challenge for themselves. Follow the kilo burger challenge at www.facebook.com/strata

Duncan Frew Words: Lynn Kelly

BADABING BADABOOM

If it wasn’t for spending time in the states as a student, Duncan Frew’s ‘Badaboom’ concept may never have been born. Taking inspiration from a bar in Arizona, he bought the domain name over a few drinks before coming home and building a wooden bar in his parent’s back garden. This mobile bar became the starting base for ‘Badaboom’ which is now an award winning company catering for events, festivals and parties throughout the UK and internationally. That was eight years ago and he hasn’t looked back since. Two years ago he became one of the directors of Vodka Wodka in Ashton Lane and last month he opened a new bar, Skinny’s on Otago Street in Glasgow. We caught up with him to check out his new venture, and chat over his journey so far.

How did you end up working in the drinks industry?

When I turned 15, my dad told me he was cutting off my allowance and it was time to get a job. I made a few calls and got a job as a runner in Gong, then when I turned 18, I became the bar manager of The Social in Royal Exchange Square. I then went to University in America to play football, but I broke both my knees which put an end to that (I couldn’t face coming back to work for minimum wage in a bar) so I built a mobile bar in my parent’s garden and that’s where Badaboom started back in 2005.

Where did the idea for Badaboom come from?

Actually while I was in America, I used to drink in a bar in Arizona called Badaboom, and I always had the idea of having a mobile bar business. I agreed one night with the owner that my first bar would be called Badaboom, in fact it was that same night I bought the domain name for Badaboom. I came home and built the bar, and at that point I didn’t know whether it would last two weeks never mind getting to the stage we are now. It‘s just grown 16

and grown.

When did you realise that you had made a success of Badaboom?

I was very lucky from the very start. Just as I launched Badaboom, Liquid Assets (another mobile bar company) closed, which at that time would have been our biggest competitor. I started taking my bar to private parties and I spent a year of cold calling. Fortunately a lot of business came from word of mouth. I hand picked the staff and we spent the first two or three years focusing on private and corporate events. It was probably when we got involved with T in the Park, and running the Bacardi B Bar that I really felt Badaboom had arrived. We were easily making 100,000 mojitos a day!

How did you get involved with Vodka Wodka?

The owner Alan Tomkins has been a good friend of my dad for years, and he approached me to take a look at Vodka Wodka. That was back in 2011. He felt it needed a refresh and a fresh set of eyes to bring it back to what it used to be. I became one of the directors and

at that point we changed everything, from the drinks offering to the staff and management. I based it on the Badaboom model which is all about quality drinks and service, and soon it was back to the way it was when it first opened. One of my best friends Dave runs it, and I still pop in everyday.

And now Skinny’s?

Yes it has been a long term ambition of mine to open a bar called Skinny’s. That, and to have cheese toasties on the menu, which we have. It’s a partnership but the concept is all me. I loved the space, and I wanted a bar that was all about quality drinks and food but also offering simple, easy nice cocktails. Yes we do have a grill offering and great burgers which a lot of bars are doing right now, but we are doing it in the West End, right next to a massive student market. In fact we are offering a student meal deal for this reason.

Why the name Skinny’s?

Again this is another American association, named after Skinny D’amato. He was known as Mr Atlantic City in his day, and owned the 500 club as well as being a rat pack groupie. I suppose I

Duncan, pictured top right admired his story and the name stuck.

What do you enjoy doing in your down time, (if you have any?) I love films. That is one of my biggest passions. On a day off I could easily watch five movies! I also enjoy travelling, and as my parents now live in America six months of the year, I will go and visit as often as possible. I also try and play football as much as I can.

What is your tipple of choice? Either a nice cold pint of Estrella, or a Havana 7 and coke. I do like a rum, and

if I’m heading out, two of my favourite bars to visit (apart from Skinny’s and Vodka Wodka or course) are Chinaskis or Moskito.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of opening a bar? You have to be confident in your own product. It’s also vital to be sure of absolutely everything, including who you are marketing your business at and who your competition is. Without this you can’t direct the business in the right direction.

Any more plans in the pipeline?

Badaboom are at the MTV awards this year which will be fantastic, and I’m planning on getting behind the bar in the artist’s pit. We also run the bar at The George Square event over Christmas, so there is lots going on. With Skinny’s just opening I will be kept busy and I’m looking forward to the response we will get in our first month and developing the brand. I also just got engaged in September, so I now have a wedding to get organised for next August. We wish him the best of luck. 17

WINTER SERVES

“BABY it’s cold outside,” so grab your pals, get in the pub, get the seat next to the fire and warm your chestnuts. Repertoire checks out the drinks behind the bar that will give you a warm glow this festive season. You don’t have to go skiing in the Alps these days to enjoy a mulled wine in the bar, no this festive season you are just as likely to see it in a bar on George Street or on Sauchiehall Street. The warm serve seems to be the way forward, with brands and bars alike looking to exploit the cosiness a nice mug of warm mulled wine or cider brings on a wintery night. It’s a sociable, winter drink readily available in farmer’s markets, Christmas fairs, and now bars. Places like Booly Mardy’s and the Big Slope in Glasgow’s West End were a mainstay of warmed ‘gluhwein’ last year and will be doing the same again this year. As will The Queens Arms and Holyrood 9A in Edinburgh. Chef at the Big Slope, Thomas Preston, who made the bar’s mulled wine last year told us, “It was a big seller for us and people were coming in especially for it, and even if they didn’t, once they saw we were doing it, they would try it. “This year we are planning on Monk’s Punch doing our own cider in house. The weather is already cold and people like to sit outside on a nice crisp, dry night with a big warm mug of alcohol.” Why not try Rekorderlig’s Winter Cider this year with the apple, cinnamon and vanilla drink hot serve being heated in urns in bars and served in bespoke tankards with orange slices, a perfect warmer, and look out for other ciders jumping on this bandwagon too. Gordon Peden at Indigo Yard in Edinburgh says he expects to see a lot of winter based ciders this yuletide. But he also believes that all things spiced will be popular. He said, “Ciders are definitely going to be big this Christmas. But there are a lot of other spiced alcholic drinks too. Such as spiced gins and spiced beers. Scottish brewers, Harviestoun have launched a special beer full of surprises for Christmas, called Santa’s Sack. Only available in cask as a guest ale around Christmas time, this is not your typical fireside Christmas brew though. It’s a malty, copper ale, with a crispness reminiscent of a frosty winters’ morn. While some bars will also have Rocking Rudolph 4.2% ABV a full bodied, malty and fruity Christmas ale, with a refreshing bitter finish. On the spirit front, Smirnoff’s new Gold label is laced with cinnamon and gold leaf (think Goldschlagger but with a less of a bite) and for Christmas why not try Smirnoff Gold with Apple juice. If you are a Jack Daniel’s drinker you might want to trade up to Johnny Walker Red Label. The brand, for the first time in 20 years, has a new UK

TV advert, and its serve is Johnnie and Ginger (ale) an alternative to Jack and Coke. There are also plenty of spicy whiskies – Wemyss Malts Spiced King is worth trying. The new Baileys Chocolate Luxe, which is made with real Belgium chocolate, doesn’t just sound great, it tastes great too. And on the cocktails front there are too many fabulous Christmas cocktails to mention them all but here are a couple worth trying which are a wee bit different... Over and Under, using O.V.D dark rum, sherry and Kahlua which creates a smooth, buttery festive drink. Ask at the bar, or you could try making it at home. Take 40ml O.V.D. Dark Rum, 20ml sherry, 10ml Kahlua, 10ml vanilla Demerara sugar syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and an egg. To garnish (if adventurous) a sugar nest and chocolate egg garnish. Combine all ingredients and double shake (first dry, then with ice), double strain into a stemmed glass. Garnish with chocolate power dusting, sugar nest and chocolate egg. Then there is the Monk’s Punch made with Bénédictine, the traditional French liquor has decided to mix it up with a brand new tipple of its own! This smooth and warming tipple has a bittersweet edge and shows off the herbaceous notes of Benedictine perfectly. Make it with 25ml Bénédictine, 25ml Hennessy VS, 25ml Punt e Mes, 5ml Luxardo Maraschino and a few drops of Master of Malts Cherry Bitters.

O.V.D. OVER AND UNDER Created by mixologist Linsey Rae Ingredients: • 40ml O.V.D. Dark Rum • 20ml Pedro Ximenez sherry • 10ml Kahlua • 10ml vanilla demerara sugar syrup • 2 dashes Angostura bitters • 1 full hens egg • Sugar nest and chocolate egg garnish Method: Combine all ingredients and double shake (first dry, then with ice), double strain into a stemmed glass. Garnish with chocolate power dusting, sugar nest and chocolate egg. 19

Hot Tub Shenanigans Words: Fraser Wilson

T

raditionally Stag Do’s are the last night of freedom for courting men before tying the knot with their one true love. A night of drunkenness, celebrations and some mild hi-jinx. But in recent years they have given way to a whole different beast, with low cost airlines and a blossoming world economy in the late nineties and early naughties making trips away from prying eyes and judgement much more accessible. No longer was a night at the Smuggler’s Inn with family and friends enough, it had to be a long weekend in Prague or Krakow where beer is dirt cheap and legislation surrounding gentlemen’s establishments is more liberal. Week-long holidays to Ibiza or Magaluf are now commonplace for stag parties, with the more daring choosing to go all out to Las Vegas. A far cry from tradition then. Having recently organised a stag weekend for a group of 17 guys, I know there is a temptation to go galavanting, leaving inhibitions behind. The group mentality when you start talking about it leads to calls of “we should go to Amsterdam, no Vegas”. But get real guys, it’s a bucket load of money to spend if you don’t organise it properly. Within 24 hours most of us would be lying in the foetal position in a darkened room, having spent all our money and given ourselves alcohol poisoning. My mate is getting married in Ireland, so he suggested the Irish boys travelled to Scotland for the stag and the Scottish boys travelled to Ireland for the wedding. As is the basis for a lasting marriage, compromise was key. I opted to organise a long weekend at a fancy lodge, with ample entertainment available whilst there, and an adrenaline pumping activity to break up the days. Coupled with dinner and drinks in a nearby city, the weekend was fantastic. It was a great excuse to get all the boys together again, catch up on what’s been going on, enjoy a few games of poker, snooker, X-box, white water rafting, a curry, beer, footy on the telly, and a lot of shots for the groom. I must admit, I did not foresee the fun, hilarity, and comfort a hot tub in the middle of Tayside would bring a bunch of 17 men. It was clothes off from the start; shorts on and into the tub we go. I almost needed a rota to keep everyone happy. We were a little naughty, opting to make the most of the warm bubbles after permitted

hours, but we were on a stag for goodness sake, rules meant nothing. They should have though after one chap decided to try and go in after the Saturday night out with a bottle of beer and a large bag of crisps. “Put them down until you’re in at least wee man,”....”How?” Cue slipping, somersault and crisps straight into the hot tub. This caused much hilarity at 3am in the morning and thankfully the eejit in question was able to join in having avoided what seemed like certain unconsciousness. There was a looooot of booze. No shame, no casualties, no debauchery and no massive debts. We weren’t thrown off of public transport or flights, we weren’t thrown in a cell for misbehaving, and we didn’t end up sprawled in the street covered in bodily fluids. We were thrown off the raft at white water rafting however, with muggings here being the first in. Worst thing about it was, we were on the flat part before the rapids. The early hilarity and excitement was all well and good, with everyone in high spirits and enjoying the experience, adventure, and stunning scenery. My enjoyment stopped about 40 minutes in when I was struck down by ‘burst couch’ syndrome. Apparently late night drinking, hot tubs, and Cuban cigars aren’t the best preparation for high adrenaline activities. I had hoped the cold water from the Tay would snap me out of it, but unfortunately I was as useful as a wet tea towel in tackling a house fire. I think I even looked like a wet tea towel. As most of the boys enjoyed beers and laughter at the recent hijinx in a nearby Inn, I curled up on the couch in front of the fire struggling through a poke of chips and a can of coke. It sorted me out though. I have to say, the stag got off lightly. We refrained from dressing him up in a ridiculous superhero outfit, stripping him naked, tying him to lampposts or getting him to ignore the law. Instead we opted to buy him as many shots as possible and treat him to a fine evening in Dundee’s only gentlemen’s club – we didn’t stay long. Not to blow my own trumpet too much, but it was a success. I’m not hear to preach or brag, merely point out all that glitters is not gold. You don’t need the extravagance of a trip abroad. Maybe a step back to a night in the Smuggler’s is the way to go. Then again, I am going to Berlin for my stag do, so... 21

Lynn s Corner Only Wan, Juan Chihuahua I popped along to check out newly opened Juan Chihuahua on Sauchiehall Street. Which in true Glesga style is getting the tag line “there is only wan, Juan Chihuahua.” The owner was a perfect host when we popped along, and within minutes he presented his version of a Coronita. You can see from the photo how it is presented, and the Corona gradually seeps down into the margarita cocktail. It was absolutely delicious and accompanied the mexican food perfectly. This is definitely the perfect spot the next time you are in the mood for Mexican. Be warned though the Tequila here is pretty addictive!

Bar Milano is a hit!

I’m so glad I opted for the new look Bar Milano in Giffnock for a meal recently, because it was some of the best food I’ve tasted. A group of us booked for a Saturday night, and despite every table in the restaurant being full the service and the whole experience was top notch. I was on the vino that night, and in true Lynn style I ended up entertaining the restaurant with the resident guitarist. In fact we got so carried away that I almost missed my lift home. Thanks to Lello and the team for a fantastic night, we will definitely be back over Christmas.

Bungee Never one to turn a down the chance to do something reckless, I agreed last month to bungee jump off the Titan Crane in Clydebank, much to my boss’s horror. This was in fact the morning after my vino drinking and singing shenanigans in Bar Milano and it certainly did the job to help me forget my hangover. The whole day was part of an advertising campaign for a company called “As you like it” and involved six of us dressing up in tetris morph suits and jumping off the 150ft high crane. Guess who went first...? I loved every minute of it though and would do it again. In fact my flatmate and I are planning on doing the bunjee jump in Pitlochry over winter. 1,2,3 Bungee!

Written in the stars One of the great things about working in this industry is that one of our resident writers is a budding astrologist. In fact he even has his very own website, and for Christmas is he offering personalised astrology readings as gifts. Why not check out his website and get a reading for that quirky family member? Check out www.jasoncaddy.co.uk for full details.

Taking music to new heights I know space can be at a premium, but a piano at ceiling height was a new one even for me. But this is exactly what Boudoir Bar in Merchant Square has done. The wine bar has been expanded and one of the new additions is a piano at roof level, which the pianist needs to climb up ladders to reach. I absolutely loved the quirky idea, and my friend Marco (pictured) had a rare time entertaining the crowd at the recent launch night. He certainly would have had the best view on the night. If you haven’t checked out this wee gem yet, make sure you head along the next time you are in The Merchant City.
