Duke Special is a piano-based songwriter with a romantic style and a warm, distinctly accented voice. His live performances have a theatrical style inspired by Vaudeville and music hall and often incorporate 78s played on an old-fashioned gramophone, or sound effects from a transistor radio. ‘Piano and Pages’ will be a magical show exploring forgotten old dusty manuscripts along with songs from Duke’s most recent and well-received album, ‘Look Out Machines! Three beautiful models, resourceful Schatze Page (Lauren Bacall), spunky Loco Dempsey (Betty Grable) and ditzy Pola Debevoise (Marilyn Monroe) rent a sumptuous penthouse in New York City, which they hope to use to land a millionaire husband. Revelling in the remarkable screen presence of the three lead actresses, the film bubbles along as a joyous celebration of trusting your heart over material gain. Shot in glorious Cinema Scope, Bacall, Grable and Monroe are delightful to watch in this big-screen comedy.

In 1920, rural Ireland is the permanent battlefield of republican rebels against the British troops and their well-paid, local collaborator militia, a recipe for mutual cruelty. ‘Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Loach’s thoughtful, powerful and moving political drama explores the turbulent events in early 1920s Ireland, during the War of Independence and the Civil War. The dramatic prism is the changing relationship between two brothers, played with terrific conviction by Cillian Murphy and Padraic Delaney.’ – Michael Dwyer, The Irish Times

The Big Fellow is a non-stop, edge-of-your-seat theatrical adventure, laced with humour and scenes of daring and intrigue. It presents the compelling story of Michael Collins: his rise from unknown volunteer in the GPO to military leader who brought down an empire only to meet his untimely death at the hands of former comrades. This is also the story of his biographer, the literary genius Frank O’Connor, who witnessed traumatic scenes as a timid adolescent soldier fighting against Collins and is now seeking to make reparation. Sound design by ex-Waterboys composer, Colin Blakey.

One of the most popular snooker players ever to pick up a cue, Jimmy White talks to acclaimed journalist Eddie Rowley about his life both on the table and behind the scenes in the world of snooker. The highs – 33 tournament wins, World Doubles Champion (with Alex Higgins), wild nights with Higgins, Kirk Stevens and Showbiz stars like Ronnie Wood. And the lows – gambling and of course his battle with drugs. Jimmy tells it all in his straight forward and often hilarious way.

Everybody knows the photograph “Lunch atop a Skyscraper,” taken during construction at the Rockefeller Center in 1932. But its background had remained a mystery: despite extensive research, neither the 11 men nor the photographer had been definitively identified. When Director Seán Ó Cualáin stumbled upon a copy of the picture in a pub in a small Irish hamlet, with a note that two of the men came from that village, he decided to delve into the history of the photo.

Enjoy 2 hours of the greatest songs in the Beatles’ songbook ‘performed with perfection and affection’ (Evening Herald). The show features real album gems as well as the obvious big hits, many costume changes and plenty of witty banter. A Classic Beatles show brings all the joys of Beatledom to a whole new generation and allows first generation fans to relive the music that changed our lives forever.

If there were a special award for being multi-gifted, then Brian Kennedy would surely walk away with it. In the firm belief that ‘music is the language of emotion,’ his live shows take his audiences on a roller coaster ride and he still finds the energy to meet up with them after each show. But the casual manner and good-humoured banter on and off stage belie the hard work of a man who seems born to perform, spellbinding his audiences while making it all look easy.

This exhibition is the result of a large scale innovative and fun filled arts and literature schools project which ran from November 2015-to March 2016, to commemorate 1916. With initial inspiration from local author Brian Gallagher and his book ‘Friend or Foe’, reaching over 3000 Dublin 15 pupils, three 6th Classes were chosen to work with illustrator, writer and cartoonist, Alan Nolan. Inspired by a specific moment in ‘Friend or Foe’ pupils were introduced to the concept of how a coin could move across a revolutionary Dublin of 1916, making its way through the misery, chaos and upheaval of war. Pupils worked exhaustively, using themes and hints from Brian’s book, along with learning from tours to Collins Barracks and thorough research with their fantastic class teachers, to begin to shape and build characters and stories that, with the help of Alan would slowly develop into a full length cartoon, full of adventure and peril. The resulting cartoon strips are now exhibited in large scale vinyl in our First Floor Gallery. The exhibition is accompanied by a full colour published comic book, along with a short film documentary which will be screened at the exhibition opening. This project has been made possible with generous funding by Fingal County Council Arts Office and Centenary Committee Funding. 31

Draíocht’s Artist in Your Classroom Initiative Workshops in your classroom with Draíocht’s Artists APRIL – MAY 2016 This programme aims to provide a range of high quality arts experiences for pupils and teachers in your own classroom, using Draíocht’s professional artists, at both Primary and Secondary level. Your school can choose from the range of specially selected and purposefully created school workshops below. Pupils will have the opportunity to create cartoons, bring out their dramatic side with drama, draw and create with ink while investigating real 1916 letters. Workshops are tailored to your class’s age and abilities and will work with two separate classes each day.

Drama in Your Classroom Age Range: Adaptable to all age ranges Duration: Junior/Senior Inf: 4 class group workshops of 45 mins 2nd class upwards: 2 class group workshops of 1.5 hours Artist: Eimear Morrissey Using some of our favourite fairytales as a starting point, facilitator Eimear, introduces pupils to the wonderful world of theatre through imaginative storytelling and fun collective group games. The workshop will explore different ways of engaging the imagination, of thinking creatively, seeing, listening, new ways of communicating and expression, as well as building confidence. Pupils will work together towards a common goal of creating a short improvised performance piece, giving them the opportunity to experience the creation of something from nothing!

Drawing & History in Your Classroom Letters of 1916: Drawing on the Past Age Range: Senior Cycle & Transition Year Students Duration: 2 class group workshops of 1.5 hours Artist: Genevieve Harden These innovative drawing and writing workshops look at creative ways to engage with original 1916 letters. The aim of ‘Letters of 1916’ is to give an intimate sense of what it was like to live in Ireland during one of the most significant years in modern Irish history. By engaging with original primary documents, students find a wide range of experiences and learn that the history of 1916 was complex and fascinating. Participants will explore a selection of letters, create and illustrate handwritten postcards in response to the excitement and turmoil expressed through the thoughts and feelings and words of ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events.

Clay in Your Classroom Age Range: 3rd – 6th Class Duration: 2 class group workshops of 2 hours Artist: Deirdre O’Reilly Slap it, bang it, thump it, texture it! She will be working to refresh and refine our visual arts policy and programme. She will focus on connecting Draíocht’s context and priorities with artists and the public to develop a dynamic and engaging programme of exhibitions and projects in 2017. Her commitment to her own photographic practice as well as her extensive experience in arts provision for children and young people, in public art and in wider cultural strategy makes her a valuable addition to our team. Her appointment underlines our commitment to contemporary visual arts as part of a wider policy and strategy for Draíocht. Previously she has worked in a range of key roles in arts, culture and education contexts including Director of Education, Abbey Theatre. Sharon has developed and managed a number of initiatives for artists including residencies, bursaries and exchanges and most recently she has commissioned public art under the Per Cent for Art scheme in a range of settings. ‘I like being distracted, flattered, tickled, even rather upset – but I should not mind something more; I should like something serious. I should like to be changed by more films, as art can change one; I should like something to happen when I go to the cinema’. – Elizabeth Bowen, ‘Why I Go to the Cinema’ These drawings and paintings capture glimpses of cinema interiors and fleeting images of the facades of Irish picture houses. GLIMPSE is infused by Ruth McDonnell’s own passion for cinema and by the years she has spent working in film and television. Ruth Mc Donnell studied at NCAD Dublin; Medway College of Design, Kent; Dún Laoghaire IADT; and DIT Dublin, where she was awarded a Degree in Fine Art. Her residencies and awards include Royal Dublin Society Printmaking Award; Arts Council bursaries in 2004 and 2008 and Cavan Arts Awards in 2004 and 2013 and a Ballinglen Arts Foundation Fellowship 2014. Jason Deans

Jason Deans

Any Observer

Artist in Residence

THU 09 JUN – SAT 10 SEP 2016 Ground Floor Gallery

JANUARY – JUNE 2016

“What I really look for in my work is how the use of raw, natural materials can resonate, respond and retort to human interactions on the contemporary world.”

Jason Deans is a Dublin artist whose work emerged during the Irish economic recession that began in 2008. His practice is reactive to issues of political and financial instability in Ireland, Europe and the world at large and the ensuing social difficulties it creates.

Jason’s ‘Any Observer’ work is predominantly sculptural and stands testament to significant social political commentary within the ephemeral constructs created. Lately, his pieces have expanded in scale and challenge, working with raw natural materials such as wood, sand, water and earth in ways that speak to our experiences as humans. This use of ephemeral materials in his practice is important, as the instability and wonder it creates within the work is key to the viewers experience within the space. Often the audience is imbibed with the view of them as a strategic player in the piece, a creative interplay between art and audience, the artist working always towards a contextual expression that feels cohesive and complete. Jason is a Dublin based artist, graduated from University of Ulster in 2009 with an MFA and achieved his BA in Fine Art from DIT in 2007. He has shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland including Dublin, Belfast, Tullamore and recently exhibited as part of the Tulca ‘Seachange’ Arts Festival in Galway.

Image detail: Jason Deans, Particles, Cast Sand and Concrete, Variable, 2016 40

Throughout his career he has used a variety of media including sculptural installation, printmaking, drawing and photography to explore these events. His work finds itself drawn towards a moment in time and capturing history’s fleeting nature. He employs ephemeral materials such as sand, water and earth in his practice along with more traditional artistic materials, often creating a sense of unease within the works. Jason will use his time on residency with Draíocht, to produce a new body of work for a solo exhibition with the arts centre along with shows in Belfast and Mayo in 2016. www.jasondeansart.com

Katie O’Neill Artist in Residence JULY - DECEMBER 2016

Katie O’Neill is a multidisciplinary artist from Balbriggan, Dublin. O’Neill’s practice is largely defined by self-publishing in various media, notably zines (small, self-made booklets) and books of political and personal themes, including ‘Loudmouth’, a collaborative feminist zine which called for submissions from women detailing their experiences of sexism. Her work has explored themes of alienation within capitalist spaces, psychogeography (an approach to geography that emphasizes playfulness and ‘drifting’ around urban environments), mental health struggles and notions of identity, memory and ‘medium as message’. For the past months O’Neill has collected sounds and images from various areas in her native Dublin city and abroad. Working as a collector and curator of this archive of found ‘footage’, the artist creates audio collages and visual narratives of various themes, playing with and adding to what she finds. O’Neill’s goal for her residency at Draíocht is to develop this project by bringing together various strands of her work in a way that is engaging and accessible to her audience. O’Neill’s work ‘Eternal Light’ was exhibited in Draíocht in 2014. The work was also displayed in Tactic in Cork. O’Neill has a BA in Photography from DIT and studied screen-printing in Black Church Print Studio under the guidance of Louise Peat.

Collapsing Horse Theatre Artists in Residence 2016

Collapsing Horse’s Residency continues at a gallop. Over mid-term we worked in Draíocht’s Studio with members of D15 Youth Theatre on an intensive week-long workshop introducing them to the Collapsing Horse working method. The main theme of the workshop was ‘Serious Playfulness’ a phrase we use all the time when making our work. We also brought in other facilitators to include other practices that feed into the theme: Cathal McGuire of Game Theory introduced ensemble work and ‘complicity’; Paul McDonnell from Macnas worked with the group on large scale puppetry and Maeve Stone of Pan Pan and Change of Address worked on sound design and music in creating work of a play. Coming up in April we will be working with animator Jody Barker Rockett, AV designer Mick Cullinan, composer Dan Forde and scientist and communicator Niamh Shaw on our new piece 46 Billion Light Years From Home. Part puppet show, part installation piece, part animated film, part immersive experience, part ballet - this is a sensory and artistic introduction to Astronomy for 4-6 year olds, told from the perspective of a little boy who goes to the edge of the observable universe. We’ll be using Draíocht’s Studio facilities to project animated images of space and begin early work on creating that journey.

Season Brochure April – August 2016 Since opening in 2001 Draíocht has reached right to the heart of the people it serves in Dublin 15 and its environs to provide stimulating and accessible arts programming. Over 50,000 people a year attend performance events including a mix of professional, national, international and local work. In addition, thousands more attend our two exhibition galleries, use our conference facilities and of course many enjoy the facilities of our Bar and Betelnut Café. We aspire to reaching as wide an audience as possible and our commitment to access for all to the facilities and activities of the Centre forms the backbone of all our endeavours. By presenting an exciting line-up we hope to offer you, our audience, a programme which will be entertaining and exciting as well as at times challenging and provocative. Programme details are published in good faith but changes may occasionally be necessary.
