Norman Ali Bassam Ali Taher Mohammad Ahmad Mostafa Khalaf- Prinz Sakerfalke von Jaffa When I was searching the internet for articles about the Coelacanth Fishes, I noticed that there was a Coelacanth fish fossil specimen from Madagascar for sale on ebay in August 2018. The coelacanth fish fossil belonged to the species Whiteia woodwardi Moy-Thomas, 1935 (Family Whiteiidae) from the Mesozoic Era, Lower Triassic Period (Olenekian Stage), around 247 million years ago, from Ambilobe, Madagascar. Dimension of the fossil nodule: 28 X 12 cm. Weight: 5000 gram. Price 340.00 US Dollars.

Genus Whiteia Whiteia fossils have been found at Wapiti Lake, Canada (Mutter and Neuman, 2009), as well as in Lower Triassic strata from East Greenland (Stensiö, 1932) and Madagascar (Moy-Thomas, 1935). Whiteia are a type of coelacanth and are structurally different from the ray-finned actinopterygians. A distinctive feature is the caudal fin, which has three lobes, consisting of a symmetrical upper and lower lobe and a separate middle lobe (Moy-Thomas, 1935, Neuman, 1996). In addition, coelacanths have two distinct dorsal fins (ancient actinopterygians had only one dorsal fin); only the posterior of the two dorsal fins is lobed (Moy-Thomas, 1935). The anterior dorsal fin resembles the ray fins of actinopterygians; the posterior dorsal fin, pectoral fins and pelvic fins are lobed and have a rounded morphology (Moy-Thomas, 1935). The rounded fin structure of Whiteia suggests slow movement, and sculling type locomotion (Forey, 1997, Fricke and Hissmann, 1992). Whiteia likely stalked and lunged at prey (Neuman, 1996); small teeth suggest Whiteia ate small organisms in addition to phytoplankton, algae, and organic detritus (Beltan, 1996; Anderson, Woods, Min, Yuan, 2013).
