On Wednesday 03.07.2019, I visited Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Centre in AlShaab District, Governorate of Hawally, State of Kuwait, accompanied with my beloved daughter Nora Norman Ali Khalaf.

The Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Centre is a cultural complex located in Hawally, Kuwait owned by the Amiri Diwan. It consists of six main components; The Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Space Museum, Arabic Islamic Science Museum, Fine Arts Centre and the external spaces known as the Public Realm. The Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Centre is an 18-hectare site making it the world’s largest museum complex (Wikipedia).

At the Natural History Museum, I saw a taxidermied Comoran Coelacanth Fish (Latimeria chalumnae Smith, 1939). This specimen was displayed in the past for many years at Hamad Mohammad Al-Atiqi (Science Museum Director 1972-1988) Hall at the Educational Science Museum in Kuwait City. This Coelacanth was a gift from the Government of the Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros to the then Kuwaiti Foreign Minister (and now the Emir of Kuwait) H.H. Al-Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad AlJaber Al-Sabah, who in turn gave it as a gift to the Science and Natural History Museum in August 1976 (Khalaf, July 1987, August 2005, April 2014, September 2015).

‫في يوم األربعاء ‪ 03‬يوليو (تموز) ‪ 2019‬قمت مع إبنتي الحبيبة نورة نورمان علي خلف بزيارة مركز‬ ‫الشيخ عبدهللا السالم الثقافي في منطقة الشعب بمحافظة حولي ‪ ،‬دولة الكويت ‪.‬‬ ‫مركز الشيخ عبد هللا السالم الثقافي أحد أكبر مناطق العرض المتحفي في الوطن العربي والعالم ‪ .‬أفتتحه‬ ‫أمير دولة الكويت ‪ ،‬صاحب السمو الشيخ صباح األحمد الجابر الصباح في ‪ 5‬فبراير ‪ . 2018‬وصمم‬ ‫المركز لكي يكون متكاملا من جميع الجوانب ‪ ،‬تلبية للباحثين والمهتمين بمختلف الشؤون الثقافية والفنية‬ ‫وليعكس الوجه الحضاري للكويت ‪ .‬ويقع المتحف في منطقة الشعب بمحافظة حولي في الكويت ‪ .‬ويحمل‬ ‫إسم الشيخ عبد هللا السالم الصباح (أبو االستقلل والدستور في الكويت) (ويكيبيديا) ‪.‬‬ ‫مبان تصل إلى ‪ 30‬ألف متر‬ ‫المركز شيد على مساحة إجمالية تبلغ نحو ‪ 127‬ألف متر مربع ‪ ،‬بمساحة‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫مربع ‪ ،‬وحدائق مقامة على مساحة ‪ 97‬ألف متر مربع ‪ .‬فيما بلغ مجموع المساحة المبنية ‪ -‬وهي عبارة عن‬ ‫طابقين سفليين وثلثة طوابق عليا ‪ 123,500 -‬ألف متر مربع ‪ .‬وجاء إنشاء المركز في موقع "مدرسة‬ ‫عبدهللا السالم" ‪ ،‬وهي من أوائل المدارس النظامية في الكويت ‪ .‬ويقع المركز في منطقة الشعب (بكسر‬ ‫الشين والعين) في محافظة حولي في الكويت ‪ .‬وهي شهيرة بالشعب البحري (ويكيبيديا) ‪.‬‬ ‫يضم المركز ثمانية مبان رئيسية ‪ ،‬تحتوي على ستة متاحف ومعارض متعدّدة ‪ ،‬تحتفي باإلنجازات العلمية‬ ‫والثقافية للتاريخ الكويتي وتاريخ وثقافة العالمين العربي واإلسلمي ‪ .‬والمتاحف الستة تنقسم إلى متحف‬ ‫التاريخ الطبيعي ومتحف العلوم ومتحف التكنولوجيا ومتحف علوم الفضاء ومتحف العلوم العربية اإلسلمية‬ ‫ومركز الفنون الجميلة ‪ .‬فيما يضم المركز مبنى للوثائق وقاعة للمؤتمرات ومسرحا ا يتسع لثلثمائة شخص ‪.‬‬ ‫ويضم المركز منطقة عامة تتوزع فيها معروضات تفصل ما بين المتاحف ‪ ،‬في حين يضم خمس وعشرين‬ ‫نافورة مياه ونوافير نفاثة تحيط بالمحيط الخارجي للمباني (ويكيبيديا) ‪.‬‬ ‫وأثناء زيارتنا لمتحف التاريخ الطبيعي بمركز الشيخ عبدهللا السالم الثقافي رأينا سمكة السيلكانث الجمبيزة‬ ‫القمرية "المحنطة" ‪ .‬وقد كانت هذه السمكة المميزة والنادرة والمهددة باإلنقراض معروضة في الماضي‬ ‫لسنوات طويلة في قاعة حمد محمد العتيقي (مدير المتحف العلمي من ‪ )1988-1972‬في المتحف العلمي‬ ‫التربوي في مدينة الكويت‪ .‬وقد كانت أصلا هذه السمكة "الطازجة" هدية من حكومة جمهورية جزر القمر‬ ‫اإلتحادية اإلسلمية لوزير الخارجية الكويتي آنذاك (واآلن أمير الكويت) صاحب السمو الشيخ صباح األحمد‬ ‫الجابر الصباح ‪ ،‬والذي حفظها "مجمدة" في ثلجة قصره ‪ ،‬ثم قام بدوره بتقديمها هدية للمتحف العلمي‬ ‫والتاريخ الطبيعي في أغسطس ‪ ، 1976‬والتي قامت بتحنيطها وعرضها في قاعة المتحف الرئيسية لسنوات‬ ‫طويلة ؛ وقد قمت شخصيا ا بدراسة هذه العينة وكتابة عدة أبحاث علمية عنها ‪ ،‬والتي تم نشرها في "الغزال ‪:‬‬ ‫النشرة الفلسطينية لعلم األحياء" (خلف ‪ ،‬يوليو ‪ ، 1987‬أغسطس ‪ ، 2005‬أبريل ‪ ، 2014‬سبتمبر‬ ‫‪. )2015‬‬ ‫سمك السيالكانث هي مجموعة من أسماك عظمية بدائية جدا ا ‪ ،‬والتي تسمى عادة باألحافير الحية ‪ .‬وهي‬ ‫قريبة الصلة من األسماك الرئوية األحفورية الحية من ذوات التنفسين ‪ ،‬وإلى مجموعة األسماك األحفورية ‪،‬‬ ‫والتي منها تطورت أولى الحيوانات الفقارية األرضية (البرمائيات) منذ حوالي ثلثمائة مليون سنة ‪ .‬ويوجد‬ ‫حاليا ا نوعين حيين من سمك السيلكانث ‪ :‬النوع األول سمكة "الجمبيزة" القمرية ذات اإلسم العلمي "‬ ‫التيميريا شالومني " وهي التي يرتبط إسمها بالسيلكانث إرتباطا ا واسع النطاق ‪ ،‬وهي تعيش حول مياه‬ ‫جزر القمر وشواطئ أفريقيا الجنوبية الشرقية (خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ ، 1982‬يوليو ‪ ، 1987‬أغسطس ‪، 2005‬‬ ‫أبريل ‪ ، 2014‬سبتمبر ‪ . )2015‬والنوع الثاني سمكة "راجا الوت" اإلندونيسية ذات اإلسم العلمي "‬ ‫التيميريا مينادوينسيس " والتي تعيش حول جزيرة سوالويزي اإلندونيسية (خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ ، 2005‬أبريل‬ ‫‪. )2019‬‬ ‫‪Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – Number 186 – June 2020‬‬

‫ وأقدم‬. ‫ لقد تم إكتشاف خمسة وعشرين جنسا ا من أحافير سمك السيلكانث‬: ‫اإلكتشاف والتسمية العلمية‬ ‫ بينما أحدث‬، ‫ مليون سنة مضت‬360 ‫األحافير يرجع تاريخها إلى العصر الديفوني المتأخر قبل حوالي‬ ‫ وألنه‬. ‫ والذي أنتهى منذ خمسة وستون مليون سنة مضت‬، ‫األحافير يرجع تاريخها إلى العصر الطباشيري‬ Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – Number 186 – June 2020

‫لم يعثر على أحافير للسيلكانث في عصور أحدث ‪ ،‬أعتبرت هذه المجموعة لوقت طويل من الحيوانات‬ ‫الم نقرضة ‪ .‬ولقد تم إصطياد أول سمكة سيلكانث حية في شبكة صيد تابعة لسفينة صيد أسماك جنوب‬ ‫أفريقية في ‪ 22‬ديسمبر ‪ . 1938‬وقد قام عالم األسماك الجنوب أفريقي "البروفيسور د‪ .‬جيمس ليونارد‬ ‫بريرلي سميث" بوصف السمكة ‪ ،‬وقام بتسميتها على شرف السيدة "مارجوري كورتيناي التيمر" التي‬ ‫أدخرت العينة من أجل الدراسة ‪ ،‬وعلى إسم خليج نهر "شالومنا" قرب شرق لندن بجنوب أفريقيا ‪ ،‬حيث تم‬ ‫إصطياد العينة األولى ‪ .‬ولم تصطاد أية عينة أخرى حتى ‪ 20‬ديسمبر ‪ 1952‬حيث أصطيدت سمكة‬ ‫"جمبيزة" (حسب لغة أهالي جزر القمر) عند جزيرة القمر الكبرى ‪ ،‬والتي تقع شمال غرب جزيرة مدغشقر‬ ‫؛ ولقد أصطيد بعد هذا التاريخ الكثير من العينات من جزر القمر (خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ )1982‬ومن بعض‬ ‫المناطق الساحلية األفريقية الجنوبية الشرقية ‪ ،‬في موزامبيق في العام ‪ ، 1991‬وفي مدغشقر في العام‬ ‫‪ ، 1995‬وفي جنوب أفريقيا في العام ‪ ، 2000‬وفي كينيا في العام ‪ ، 2001‬وفي تنزانيا في العام ‪2003‬‬ ‫(خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ ، )2005‬وفي زنجبار في العام ‪. 2007‬‬

‫وكذلك تم إصطياد العديد من العينات من السيلكانث اإلندونيسي من سواحل جزيرة سوالويزي اإلندونيسية‬ ‫(خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ )2005‬منذ ‪ 18‬سبتمبر ‪ 1997‬حين تمت رؤية سمكة "راجا الوت" (حسب اللغة‬ ‫اإلندونيسية ومعناها ملك البحر) في أحد أسواق سمك جزيرة سوالويزي من قبل عالم بيئة الشعاب‬ ‫المرجانية د‪ .‬مارك إردمان وعروسته المتخصصة في الطبيعة أرناز مهتا ؛ كما تم صيد العينة اإلندونيسية‬ ‫الثانية من مانادو عاصمة محافظة شمال سوالويزي في ‪ 30‬يوليو ‪ 1998‬وكان طولها ‪ 1.2‬مترا ا ووزنها ‪29‬‬ ‫كيلوجراما ا ‪ ،‬وظلت السمكة حية لمدة ‪ 6‬ساعات ‪ ،‬مما مكن العلماء من دراستها وتصويرها فوتوغرافيا ا في‬ ‫‪Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – Number 186 – June 2020‬‬

‫الماء ‪ ،‬وتحديد لونها الطبيعي وحركة الزعانف والسلوك العام ؛ وقد تم حفظ السمكة وإهدائها إلى متحف‬ ‫بوجورينزة لعلم الحيوان التابع لمعهد العلوم اإلندونيسي ‪ ،‬حيث تمت دراسة العينة ووصف النوع الجديد‬ ‫وتسميته علميا ا من قبل فريق علمي أحيائي مشترك فرنسي وإندونيسي بقيادة عالم الوراثة واألسماك الفرنسي‬ ‫د‪ .‬لورنت بوياود في العام ‪( 1999‬خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ ، 2005‬أغسطس ‪ ، 2005‬أبريل ‪ ، 2014‬سبتمبر‬ ‫‪ ، 2015‬أبريل ‪.)2019‬‬

‫أهميتها في علم الحيوان ‪ :‬بصرف النظر عن كونها سمكة نادرة ومعرضة لإلنقراض ‪ ،‬فإن أسماك‬ ‫السيلكانث لها أهمية حيوانية كبيرة جدا ا ‪ .‬أوالا ألنها تعتبر أحفورة حية ‪ ،‬حيث بقيت هذه السمكة من غير‬ ‫تغيير تقريبا ا لعدة مليين من السنوات ‪ ،‬ولهذا فإنها تقدم للعلماء رؤية أحيائية (بيولوجية) إلحدى التدرجات‬ ‫القديمة لتاريخ الحياة على سطح األرض ‪ .‬وثانيا ا فإن مجموعة األسماك التي تنتمي إليها السيلكانث تحتل‬ ‫أهمية كبيرة في تاريخ حياة الفقاريات ‪ ،‬فهي تشتمل على أسلف جميع األشكال األرضية تقريبا ا (هذا إذا‬ ‫أفترضنا كونها سلفا ا لتلك األحياء) (خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪. )1982‬‬

‫الوصف ‪ :‬سمك السيلكانث تعني في اليونانية ب "الشوكة المجوفة" ؛ وقد سميت بذلك بسبب تواجد‬ ‫"األشواك المجوفة" التي تبدأ من العمود الفقري حتى شعاع الزعنفة الذيلية والتي تمت دراستها في أول عينة‬ ‫أحفورية للسيلكانث من قبل عالم األحياء السويسري األمريكي "البروفيسور د‪ .‬لويس أجاسيز" في العام‬ ‫‪ . 1836‬وللسيلكانث عدة صفات مميزة أخرى ؛ فعندها زعانف لحمية عظمية ذات شكل ناتئ مثل‬ ‫األطراف (زوج الزعانف الصدرية ‪ ،‬وزوج الزعانف الحوضية ‪ ،‬والزعنفة الشرجية ‪ ،‬والزعنفة الظهرية‬ ‫الثانية) ‪ ،‬وهذه الزعانف لها قدرة كبيرة على الحركة المتبادلة كحركة حيوانات اليابسة ذات األرجل األربعة‬ ‫‪ ،‬وهي تختلف عن الزعانف العادية بأن لها محور عضلي وهيكلي والتي تمكن السمكة من إستعمالها‬ ‫كدعامات أو أرجل (أطراف) بدائية ‪ .‬وبسبب هذه الصفة النادرة فقد قام عالم األسماك "البروفيسورجيمس‬ ‫سميث" بتسمية هذه السمكة "ذات األرجل األربعة القديمة" ‪ .‬وهي كذلك تمتاز بالزعنفة الذيلية الثلثية‬ ‫الفصوص ذات الشكل المميز والتي تسمى بالزعنفة ثلثية الفصوص (ترايلوبت) ‪ .‬وبسبب وجود العدد‬ ‫الكبير من الزعانف (ثمانية زعانف ‪ :‬زوج زعانف صدرية ‪ ،‬وزوج زعانف حوضية ‪ ،‬وزوج زعانف‬ ‫ظهرية ‪ ،‬وزعنفة شرجية ‪ ،‬وزعنفة ذيلية) فإن السيلكانث لها قدرة كبيرة على المناورة الحركية ‪ ،‬ويمكن‬ ‫أن توجه أجسامها في أي إتجاه في الماء تقريبا ا ‪ .‬كما تمت رؤيتها وهي تقوم بالسباحة ورؤوسها في وضع‬ ‫سفلي وكذلك وهي تسبح وبطونها في وضع علوي ‪ .‬وال يوجد للسيلكانث عمود فقري بل تمتلك حبلا‬ ‫ظهريا ا وهو كأنبوب مضغوط مجوف مليئ بالدهن ؛ وفي أغلب الفقاريات األخرى فإن العمود الفقري يحل‬ ‫محل الحبل الظهري أثناء نمو الجنين ‪ .‬كذلك فإن للسيلكانث رئة دهنية ضامرة ‪ ،‬ومثانة عوم (نفاخة عوم)‬ ‫مملوءة بالدهن والتي تستعمل كوسيلة للعوم ‪ .‬كما أن لها تقنية فكية متخصصة ‪ ،‬مع وجود مفصل في‬ ‫منتصف الجمجمة والتي تمكن منطقة الخطم من أن تتحرك إلى األعلى وإلى األسفل عندما يتحرك الفك‬ ‫السفلي (خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ ، )1982‬وهذا يسمح لها بالتغذي على فرائس كبيرة الحجم ‪ .‬كما تمتلك عضو‬ ‫خطمي إستشعاري كهربائي لكشف الفرائس ‪ ،‬كما تساعدها في السباحة حول أية عقبات ‪ .‬وهي تمتاز بصغر‬ ‫حجم أدمغتها ‪ ،‬فهي تشكل فقط ‪ 1.5‬بالمائة من تجويف الجمجمة ‪ ،‬بينما تحتل مادة دهنية ‪ 98.5‬بالمائة من‬ ‫باقي التجويف ‪ .‬ويختلف شكل القلب عن شكلها في األسماك الحديثة ‪ ،‬فحجرات القلب مرتبة كأنبوب مستقيم‬ ‫‪ .‬ولسمك السيلكانث إسطوانات عاكسة مميزة في أعينها الكبيرة ‪ ،‬تسمح لها بكشف أقل كميات من الضوء‬ ‫في ظلم أعماق المحيط ‪ .‬كما أن لها قشور "كوزمينية" كبيرة وخشنة متخصصة منتجة للمخاط ‪ ،‬والتي‬ ‫تعمل كدرع سميك تحمي السمكة من العوامل الخارجية ‪ ،‬وهذه القشور ال توجد إال في األسماك األحفورية‬ ‫(األسماك الرئوية واألسماك ذات الزعانف الزوجية الناتئة كالسيلكانث)‪.‬‬ ‫إن معظم أحافيرأسماك السيلكانث كانت صغيرة ‪ ،‬ولكن الجمبيزة القمرية " التيميريا شالومني " سمكة‬ ‫كبيرة يصل طولها إلى مترين (ستة أقدام) ووزنها إلى حوالي تسعين كيلوجراما ا ‪ .‬أما لونها فيكون عادة‬ ‫أرجواني بني مع وجود بقع زهرية اللون بشكل غير منتظم (خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ . )1982‬أما سمكة راجا الوت‬ ‫اإلندونيسية " التيميريا مينادوينسيس " فتتميز باللون البني ‪.‬‬ ‫التاريخ الطبيعي ‪ :‬إن أول أحفورة للسيلكانث كانت تعيش على األغلب في المياه العذبة ‪ ،‬ولكن بعد ذلك‬ ‫دخلت إلى المحيطات ؛ وأسماك السيلكانث تعيش في المياه العميقة الهادئة حتى عمق سبعمائة متر ‪ ،‬وهذا‬ ‫يفسر إختفائها عن األعين والعلم لمدة طويلة ‪ .‬وهي تقضي معظم أوقاتها نهارا ا في حالة راحة على عمق ما‬ ‫بين مائة ومائتين وخمسين مترا ا تحت الحواف الصخرية البحرية أو الكهوف البحرية مع أقرانها ‪ ،‬ولذلك‬ ‫فهي تعتبر من األسماك اإلجتماعية ؛ وهي تسبح ليلا منجرفة حتى سبعة كيلومترات بعيدا ا عن أماكن راحتها‬ ‫بحثا ا عن غذائها والذي يتكون في أغلبه من الحبار والسبيدج واألخطبوط واألسماك ؛ وهي قادرة على‬ ‫اإلنقضاض السريع في حال إصطيادها للفرائس أو السباحة مسرعة لإلبتعاد عن أي خطر مستعملة زعنفتها‬ ‫الذيلية القوية ‪ .‬وهي تصطاد عادة على عمق حوالي سبعين مترا ا بحبل طويل وصنارة واحدة معلق عليها‬ ‫قطعة سمك كطعم ‪ .‬وقد الحظ بعض صيادي األسماك في جزر القمر بعض صغار السيلكانث وهي تسبح‬ ‫‪Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – Number 186 – June 2020‬‬

‫في أعماق ضحلة ‪ ،‬وأنه يمكن رؤيتها بوضوح وهي تسبح قرب القاع الرملي الضحل نهارا ا ‪ ،‬وهم يسمون‬ ‫أسماك السيلكانث الصغيرة التي تسبح في المياه الضحلة بسمك "مامة" لتفريقها عن "جمبيزة" المياه العميقة‬ ‫‪ .‬وتعتبر السيلكانث آكلة لحوم نشيطة ‪ ،‬ولها الكثير من األسنان الحادة ‪ ،‬وهي تكافح بعنف عندما تصطاد‬ ‫بالصنارة (خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ . )1982‬وتعتبر لحومها غير مستساغة بسبب إحتوائها على نسبة عالية من البولة‬ ‫(اليوريا) والزيت ‪ ،‬كما أن قشورها تنتج المخاط ‪ .‬ويكون تلقيح البيض في السيلكانث داخليا ا ‪ ،‬ويستمر‬ ‫حمل اإلناث من سنة إلى ثلث سنوات ‪ ،‬وتتغذى األجنة في تلك الفترة من كيس صفار البيض ‪ .‬وقد تم‬ ‫إصطياد إثنين من اإلناث ‪ ،‬واحدة تحمل خمسة صغار مكتملة النمو بطول ‪ 35‬سنتيمترا ا ‪ ،‬واألنثى األخرى‬ ‫تحمل ستة وعشرين صغيرا ا مكتملي النمو بنفس الطول تقريبا ا ؛ وتخرج الصغار المكتملة النمو من بطون‬ ‫أمهاتها وكأنها مولودة ‪ .‬هذا وتعيش أسماك السيلكانث حتى أعمار أكثر من ستين عاما ا ‪.‬‬ ‫التصنيف ‪ :‬إن جنس السيلكانث "التيميريا" يصنف في عائلة "سيلكانثيدي" في رتبة "شوكيات مجوفة"‬ ‫(سيلكانثيني) (خلف ‪ ،‬فبراير ‪ )1982‬في طويئفة "أسماك شعاعية" (أكتينيستيا) في طائفة "لحميات‬ ‫الزعانف" (ساركوبتريجي) ‪.‬‬

‫‪The Coelacanths constitute a now-rare order of fish that includes two extant species in‬‬ ‫‪the genus Latimeria: the West Indian Ocean or Comoran Coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae‬‬ ‫‪Smith, 1939) and the Indonesian Coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis Pouyaud,‬‬ ‫‪Wirjoatmodjo, Rachmatika, Tjakrawidjaja, Hadiaty and Hadie, 1999). means they are more closely related to lungfish, reptiles and mammals than to the common ray-finned fishes. They are found along the coastlines of the West Indian Ocean and Indonesia. Since there are only two species of coelacanth and both are threatened, it is the most endangered order of animals in the world. The West Indian Ocean coelacanth is a critically endangered species (Wikipedia; Khalaf, March 2014, April 2014).

Coelacanths belong to the subclass Actinistia, a group of lobed-finned fish related to lungfish and certain extinct Devonian fish such as osteolepiforms, porolepiforms, rhizodonts, and Panderichthys. Coelacanths were thought to have gone extinct in the Late Cretaceous, but were rediscovered in 1938 off the coast of South Africa.

Traditionally, the coelacanth was considered a “living fossil” due to its apparent lack of significant evolution over the past millions of years; and the coelacanth was thought to have evolved into roughly its current form approximately 400 million years ago.

However, several recent studies have shown that coelacanth body shapes are much more diverse than is generally said. In addition, it was shown recently that studies concluding that a slow rate of molecular evolution is linked to morphological conservatism in coelacanths are biased on the prior hypothesis that these species are “living fossils” (Wikipedia; Khalaf, March 2014, April 2014).

"Coelacanth" is an adaptation of Modern Latin Cœlacanthus "hollow spine," from Greek κοῖλ-ος koilos "hollow" + ἄκανθ-α akantha "spine," referring to the hollow caudal fin rays of the first fossil specimen described and named by Louis Agassiz in 1836 (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

The coelacanths, which are related to lungfishes and tetrapods, were believed to have been extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period. More closely related to tetrapods than even the ray-finned fish, coelacanths were considered transitional species between fish and tetrapods. The first Latimeria specimen was found off the east coast of South Africa, off the Chalumna River (now Tyolomnqa) in 1938. Museum curator Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer discovered the fish among the catch of a local angler, Captain Hendrick Goosen, on 23 December 1938. A local chemistry professor, J.L.B. Smith, confirmed the fish's importance with a famous cable: "MOST IMPORTANT PRESERVE SKELETON AND GILLS = FISH DESCRIBED" (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

The discovery of a species still living, when they were believed to have gone extinct 65 million years previously, makes the coelacanth the best-known example of a Lazarus taxon, an evolutionary line that seems to have disappeared from the fossil record only to reappear much later. Since 1938, Latimeria chalumnae have been found in the Comoros, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and in Zanzibar (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

The second extant species, Latimeria menadoensis, was described from Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia in 1999 by Pouyaud et al. based on a specimen discovered by Mark V. Erdmann in 1998 and deposited at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). and his wife Arnaz Mehta before it was bought by a shopper (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

The coelacanth has no real commercial value, apart from being coveted by museums and private collectors. As a food fish the coelacanth is almost worthless, as its tissues exude oils that give the flesh a foul flavor. The continued survival of the coelacanth may be threatened by commercial deep-sea trawling, in which coelacanths are caught as bycatch (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

Coelacanths are a part of the clade Sarcopterygii, or the lobe-finned fishes. Externally, there are several characteristics that distinguish the coelacanth from other lobe-finned fish. They possess a three-lobed caudal fin, also called a trilobate fin or a diphycercal tail. A secondary tail that goes along and extends past the primary tail separates the upper and lower halves of the coelacanth. protects the exterior of the coelacanth. There also are several internal traits that aid in differentiating coelacanths from other lobe-finned fish. At the back of the skull, the coelacanth possesses a hinge, the intracranial joint, which allows it to open its mouth extremely wide. Coelacanths also retain a notochord, a hollow, pressurized tube which is replaced by the vertebral column early in embryonic development in most other vertebrates. The heart of the coelacanth is shaped differently from that of most modern fish; the heart's chambers are arranged in a straight tube. The coelacanth braincase is 98.5% filled with fat; only 1.5% of the braincase contains brain tissue. The cheeks of the coelacanths are unique because the opercular bone is very small and holds a large softtissue opercular flap. The coelacanth also possesses a unique rostral organ within the ethmoid region of the braincase. Also unique to extant coelacanths is the presence of a "fatty lung" or a fat-filled single-lobed vestigial lung (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

Latimeria chalumnae and Latimeria menadoensis are the only two known living coelacanth species. The word coelacanth is derived from the Greek for “hollow spine”, because of its unique hollow spine fins. Coelacanths are large, plump, lobe-finned fish that grow up to 1.8 meters. They are nocturnal piscivorous drift-hunters. The body is covered in cosmoid scales that act as armor. Coelacanths have 8 fins – 2 dorsal fins, 2 pectoral fins, 2 pelvic fins, 1 anal fin, and 1 caudal fin. The tail is very nearly equally proportioned and is split by a terminal tuft of fin rays that make up the caudal lobe of the tail. The eyes of the coelacanth are very large, while the mouth is very small. The eye is acclimatized to seeing in poor light by having rods that absorb mostly low wavelengths.

The vision of coelacanths has evolved to a mainly blue-shifted color capacity.

Pseudomaxillary folds surround the mouth, which replace the maxilla, a structure that is absent in coelacanths. There are two nostrils along with four other external openings that appear between the premaxilla and lateral rostral bones. The nasal sacs resemble those of many other fish and do not contain an internal nostril. The rostral organ of the coelacanth is contained within the ethmoid region of the braincase. It has three unguarded openings into the environment. The rostral organ is used as a part of the coelacanth's latero-sensory system. The coelacanth's auditory reception is mediated by its inner ear. The inner ear of the coelacanth is very similar to that of tetrapods because it is classified as being a basilar papilla (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

Locomotion of the coelacanths is unique to their kind. To move around, coelacanths most commonly take advantage of up or down-wellings of the current and drift. They use their paired fins to stabilize their movement through the water. While on the ocean floor, they do not use their paired fins for any kind of movement. Coelacanths can create thrust for quick starts by using their caudal fins. Due to the high number of fins it possesses, the coelacanth has high maneuverability and can orient its body in almost any direction in the water. They have been seen doing headstands and swimming belly up. It is thought that their rostral organ helps give the coelacanth electro-perception, which aids in their movement around obstacles (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

A group led by Chris Amemiya and Neil Shubin published the genome sequence of the coelacanth in the journal “Nature”. The African coelacanth genome was sequenced and Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – Number 186 – June 2020

assembled using DNA from a Comoros Islands Latimeria chalumnae specimen. It was sequenced by Illumina sequencing technology and assembled using the short read genome assembler ALLPATHS-LG (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

The vertebrate land transition is one of the most important steps in our evolutionary history. We conclude that the closest living fish to the tetrapod ancestor is the lungfish, not the coelacanth. However, the coelacanth is critical to our understanding of this transition, as the lungfish have intractable genome sizes (estimated at 50–100GB) (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

According to genetic analysis of current species, the divergence of coelacanths, lungfish, and tetrapods is thought to have occurred 390 million years ago. Coelacanths were thought to have undergone extinction 65 million years ago during the Cretaceous– Paleogene extinction event. The first recorded coelacanth fossil was found in Australia and was of a coelacanth jaw that dated back 360 million years, named Eoachtinistia foreyi. The most recent species of coelacanth in the fossil record is the Macropoma.

Macropoma, a sister species to Latimeria chalumnae, is separated by 80 million years. The fossil record of the coelacanth is unique because coelacanth fossils were found 100 years before the first live specimen was identified. In 1938, Courtenay-Latimer rediscovered the first live specimen, Latimeria chalumnae, which was caught off of the coast of East London, South Africa. In 1997, a marine biologist was on a honeymoon and discovered the second live species, Latimeria menadoensis in an Indonesian market. species of coelacanth have been described, including the two extant species. Before the discovery of a live coelacanth specimen, the coelacanth time range was thought to have spanned from the Middle Devonian to the Upper Cretaceous period. Although fossils found during that time were claimed to demonstrate a similar morphology, recent studies pointed out that coelacanth morphological conservatism is a belief that is not based on data (Wikipedia; Khalaf, April 2014).

Der Komoren-Quastenflosser (Latimeria chalumnae Smith, 1939) im Naturhistorische Museum, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Kulturzentrum, Hawally, Staat Kuwait Am Mittwoch, 03. Juli 2019, habe ich, begleitet mit meiner Tochter Nora, das Naturhistorische Museum im Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Kulturzentrum, Al-Shaab Distrikt, Governorate Hawally, Staat Kuwait besucht.

Das Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Kulturzentrum ist ein Kulturkomplex in Hawally, Kuwait der dem Amiri Diwan gehört. Es besteht aus sechs Hauptkomponenten; Das Naturhistorische Museum, das Wissenschaftsmuseum, das Weltraummuseum, das Arabisch-Islamische Wissenschaftsmuseum, das Zentrum der Schönen Künste und die Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – Number 186 – June 2020

öffentlichen Räume. Das Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Kulturzentrum ist mit 18 Hektar der größte Museumskomplex der Welt.

Im Naturhistorischen Museum sah ich einen taxidermierte Komoren-QuastenflosserFisch (Latimeria chalumnae Smith, 1939). Dieses Exemplar wurde in der Vergangenheit in der Halle von Hamad Mohammad Al-Atiqi (Direktor des Wissenschaftsmuseums 19721988) im Erziehungswissenschaftliches Museum in Kuwait-Stadt ausgestellt. Dieser Quastenflosser war ein Geschenk der Regierung der Islamischen Bundesrepublik der Komoren an den damaligen kuwaitischen Außenminister (und jetzt der Emir von Kuwait) Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, der wiederum gab es als Geschenk an das Wissenschafts- und Naturkundemuseum in Kuwait im August 1976 (Khalaf, Juli 1987, August 2005, April 2014, September 2015).

Quastenflosser, Familie Coelacanthidae, Gattung Latimeria: Die alte Gruppe der Crossopterygii, als seit dem Zeitalter der Dinosaurier, d.h. seit etwa 60 Millionen Jahren ausgestorben geltend, erregte die wissenschaftliche Welt durch ihr Wiederauferstehen vor der süd-afrikanischen Küste um die Weihnachtszeit des Jahres 1938. Ein einziges Exemplar wurde auf einer Tiefe von 40 Faden im Schleppnetz gefangen. Es war von leuchtend blauer Farbe und äußerst ölhaltig. Es wog 57,6 kg und war gerade 140 cm lang und sollte deshalb vielleicht nicht als "Riesenfisch" aufgeführt werden. Doch wurde nach zuverlässigen Berichten ein weiterer ganz ähnlicher, jedoch über 1,8 m langer Fisch bei Flut nahe East London angespült, jener Stadt, in deren Museum dies einzigartige lebende Fossil ausgestellt ist (Norman und Fraser, 1963; Khalaf, Juli 1987).

Latimeria ist ein verhältnismäßig großer, plumper Fisch. Die Kiefer sind mit Reihen kräftiger spitzer Zähne bewehrt. Die zweite Rücken-, die After- sowie die paarigen Flossen sitzen auf beschuppten muskulösen Stielen. Schwanzflosse aus je einem ziemlich langen oberen und unteren Flossensaum bestehend, der in der Mittellinie der körperachse durch einen kleineren stark abgerundeten Endlappen unterbrochen und überragt wird. Färbung im Leben metallisch graublau mit helleren grünlich-blauen Reflexen auf den Flossen. Auge grünlich-gelb (Norman und Fraser, 1963, Khalaf, Juli 1987).

Erreicht eine Länge von mindestens 1,7 m und ein Gewicht von 78 kg. Der Quastenflosser ist offenbar ein vorwiegend nächtlicher Bodenfisch, der den Tag vielleicht in Höhlen oder Felsspalten verbringt. Die Fangplätze liegen, vom Erstfund abgesehen, sämtlich auf der relativ stark abfallenden Böschung um die Comoren auf Tiefen von 150-390 m und etwa 500-1000 m von der Küste entfernt. Als Nahrung wurden kleinere Fische festgestellt, doch waren die Mägen der meisten untersuchten Tiere leer. Die Männchen messen in der Regel nur 109-130 cm und sind mit Gewichten von 20-40 kg auch viel leichter als die größeren Weibchen. Über die Fortpflanzung ist nichts bekannt (Norman und Fraser, 1963; Khalaf, Juli 1987).

Der Gattungsname Latimeria wurde dem Fisch zu Ehren der Kustodin des Museums von East London, Miss Courtenay-Latimer, erteilt, welche die Besonderheit dieses Fisches erkannte und Professor Smith von dem Fund verständigte. Der Artname chalumnae erinnert an den Fundort, da der Fisch vor der Mündung des ChalumnaFlusses gefangen wurde (Norman und Fraser, 1963; Khalaf, Juli 1987).

Die Quastenflosser (Coelacanthiformes „Hohlstachler“, von altgriech. κοῖλ-ος koilos „hohl“ und ἄκανθ-α akantha „Stachel“, „Dorn“; auch Coelacanthimorpha, Actinistia) sind eine Gruppe der Knochenfische in der Klasse der Fleischflosser (Sarcopterygii).

Ihre nächsten Verwandten sind die Lungenfische und die Landwirbeltiere (Tetrapoda).

Die Quastenflosser gelten als das bekannteste Beispiel eines lebenden Fossils (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Ihr Fossilbericht setzt im Unterdevon vor etwa 409 Millionen Jahren ein und bricht in der späten Oberkreide vor mehr als 70 Millionen Jahren ab. Daher ging man bis zur Entdeckung des rezenten Komoren-Quastenflossers (Latimeria chalumnae) 1938 im Indischen Ozean vor Südafrika davon aus, dass die Quastenflosser das Massenaussterben am Ende der Kreidezeit vor 65 Millionen Jahren nicht überstanden hatten. 1997 wurde vor der indonesischen Insel Sulawesi eine zweite Art entdeckt, der Manado-Quastenflosser (Latimeria menadoensis). Fossil sind etwa 70 Arten in 28 Gattungen bekannt (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Namensgebung Der Name „Quastenflosser“ stammt von der veralteten wissenschaftlichen Bezeichnung „Crossopterygii“ (gr. krossos „etwas Vorragendes“, „Quaste“) und bezieht sich auf die pinsel- beziehungsweise quastenförmige Ausbildung der sechs Ruderflossen (P, V, D2 und A). Das Taxon „Crossopterygii“ ist heute veraltet und gilt als paraphyletisch, da darin die beiden Reihen Actinistia (mit den rezenten Latimerien) und die fossilen Rhipidistia, die den Landwirbeltieren näherstanden, vereinigt waren (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Bei der Klassifikation bestehen in der Nomenklatur zwischen den Taxa Klasse und Ordnung kleine Unstimmigkeiten. So werden in einem System (Nelson, 2006), das meist verwendet wird, die Actinistia und die Coelacanthimorpha synonym behandelt und als Unterklasse betrachtet. Im anderen, weniger gebräuchlichen System werden die Coelacanthimorpha als Infraklasse (engl. infraclass) und die Actinistia als Unterklasse (engl. subclass) betrachtet. Einigkeit bei der Nomenklatur besteht in beiden Fällen bei der Ordnung (Coelacanthiformes) und der Klasse (Sarcopterygii). Der Begriff „Quastenflosser“ ist keinem Taxon klar zugeordnet. Für Coelacanthimorpha wird gelegentlich umgangssprachlich der Name „Gombessa“ verwendet (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Körperbau Ein gemeinsames Merkmal (Synapomorphie) der Quastenflosser und Lungenfische ist das teilweise verknöcherte und mit Muskulatur versehene Skelett der Brust- und Bauchflossen. Sie werden deshalb zur Klasse der Fleisch- oder Muskelflosser (Sarcopterygii) zusammengefasst. Ähnlich gebaut sind aber auch die zweite Rückenund die Afterflosse, die dem Fisch ein präzises örtliches Manövrieren ermöglichen. Die vordere Rückenflosse ist für die Actinistia kennzeichnend stachelig entwickelt (eine Parallele zur D1 der Acanthopterygii – worauf gr. aktis „Strahl“ hinweisen soll) (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Der Bau der Brust- und Bauchflossen ähnelt dem Bau der Gliedmaßen der Landwirbeltiere. Vermutlich haben frühe Quastenflosser-Arten ihre muskulösen Flossen zur Fortbewegung am Meeresboden, möglicherweise auch an Land benutzt. Ein mit Fett gefülltes blasenartiges Organ am Darm, das als Rudiment einer auch als Lunge nutzbaren Schwimmblase interpretiert wird, gilt als Indiz für die Fähigkeit der „UrLatimeria“, Luft zu atmen. Bei den rezenten Lungenfischen ist ein solches Organ noch vorhanden und funktionsfähig (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Quastenflosser verfügen über ein Gelenk im Schädel. Dieses Gelenk erlaubt es ihnen, den Oberkiefer gegenüber dem hinteren Schädelteil anzuheben, um so beim Fressen die Maulöffnung zu vergrößern. Wichtig für den Nahrungserwerb ist auch das Rostralorgan, eine Höhlung im Schädel an der Schnauzenspitze, mit deren Sinneszellen Latimeria elektrische Felder wahrnimmt, wie sie alle lebenden Tiere umgeben. Ähnliche Elektrorezeptoren haben viele primitivere Fische, darunter die Haie (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Latimeria wird bis zu zwei Meter lang und 100 Kilogramm schwer. Das Gehirn eines solchen Fisches wiegt allerdings nur einige Gramm. Es nimmt in der Schädelhöhle, durch die auch das genannte Gelenk verläuft und die sonst von einem fettigen lymphoiden Gewebe erfüllt ist, nur sehr wenig Raum ein (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Evolution Die Rhipidistia, nahe Verwandte der Quastenflosser und Lungenfische, werden als Vorfahren der ersten Landwirbeltiere angesehen. Der Aufbau des Skelettes ähnelt Ichthyostega, einem Fossil, das als eines der ersten Amphibien und damit als Landwirbeltier angesehen wird. Der Quastenflosser verwendet seine Flossen in einer Art „Kreuzgang“, aber er bewegt sich nur schwimmend, die Evolution hatte somit eine Art des „Gehens“ entwickelt, die erst später verwendet wurde (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Quastenflosser werden oft als die „Urahnen“ der Landwirbeltiere (Amphibien etc.) dargestellt. Diese ungenaue Darstellung bezieht sich nicht auf die rezenten Quastenflosser, sondern auf die letzten gemeinsamen Vorfahren der Quastenflosser und der Landwirbeltiere. Hierdurch wird klar, dass Genomvergleiche der heute gefangenen Quastenflosser keine Aussage über die evolutionäre Verwandtschaft der „Ur-Quastenflosser“ zu den rezenten Landwirbeltieren zulassen. Die genetische Anpassung der den ursprünglichen Quastenflossern morphologisch sehr ähnlichen rezenten Tiere an den Lebensraum Kontinentalschelf hatte ebenso lange Zeit wie die Entwicklung der heute lebenden Landwirbeltiere. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass das Genom der heutigen Quastenflosser dem der ältesten paläozoischen Formen gleicht, ist daher sehr gering, da eine ähnliche äußere Erscheinung keine Rückschlüsse auf die genetische Übereinstimmung zulässt. Tatsächlich ergaben genetische Vergleiche, dass die Lungenfische eine deutlich größere genetische Übereinstimmung mit den „Höheren Wirbeltieren“ aufweisen als die Quastenflosser (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Der älteste bekannte Quastenflosser ist Eoactinistia aus dem Unterdevon von Australien.

Die jüngsten fossilen Zeugnisse stammen aus 70 Millionen Jahre alten Ablagerungen der späten Oberkreide. Ihre Blütezeit lag in der Trias. Daher glaubte man lange, die Quastenflosser wären spätestens mit den Dinosauriern und vielen anderen Lebewesen am Ende des Mesozoikums ausgestorben (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Komoren-Quastenflosser Der Komoren-Quastenflosser (Latimeria chalumnae Smith, 1939) ist eine rezente Art der Quastenflosser (Coelacanthimorpha). Die Tiere werden bis zu zwei Meter lang und sind an der Ostküste Südafrikas beheimatet. Sie sind in nur geringer Individuenzahl bekannt und wohl vom Aussterben bedroht. Aufgrund von Untersuchungen des Mageninhalts gefangener Komoren-Quastenflosser ist davon auszugehen, dass es sich bei den Tieren um Fleischfresser handelt (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Entwicklungsgeschichtlich hat sich bei dieser Art die Lunge zu einer Schwimmblase gewandelt. Das Gehirn des Komoren-Quastenflossers nimmt nur etwa ein Hundertstel des Volumens der Hirnhöhle ein, ansonsten wird die Hirnhöhle von einer fettartigen Substanz ausgefüllt (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Fundgeschichte Für die Wissenschaft entdeckt wurde das erste Exemplar der Art am 22. Dezember 1938 von Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, die leitend als Kuratorin (ab 1945 mit der Bezeichnung „Direktorin“) am East London Museum östlich von Kapstadt tätig war.

Das Tier war von einem Fischdampfer unter dem Kommando von Hendrik Goosen in den Gewässern des Indischen Ozeans vor der südafrikanischen Küste nahe der Mündung des Chalumna gefangen worden. Da Courtenay-Latimer sich mit Kapitän Goosen angefreundet hatte, wurde sie regelmäßig über die Einfahrt des Schiffes in den Hafen informiert und hatte die Erlaubnis, interessante Einzelstücke aus dem Fang für ihr Museum auszuwählen. Der Chemieprofessor und Amateur-Fischkundler James L. B. Smith ordnete das Tier den bis dahin für ausgestorben gehaltenen Quastenflossern zu. Trotz umgehend eingeleiteter Suche nach weiteren Exemplaren dieser Art gelang es erst 1952 bei den Komoren, etwa 300 km nördlich der ersten Fundstelle gelegen, ein weiteres Tier zu fangen. Wie der erste Fisch konnte es nicht am Leben erhalten werden, nachdem es von den Fängern an Bord des Fangschiffes geholt wurde. In den neunziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts gelangen dann weitere Beobachtungen, unter anderem das Auffinden einer weiteren Population der Quastenflosser, die möglicherweise eine eigene Art darstellen und als Manado-Quastenflosser (Latimeria menadoensis) bezeichnet werden (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Lebensweise Mit seinen beinartigen Brust- und Bauchflossen kann sich der Fisch in einer Art „Kreuzgang“ bewegen. Für diese alternierenden Bewegungen der Flossen hat er in seinem Nervensystem bestimmte „neuromuskuläre Koordinationen“, wie es Hans Fricke nennt. Nach seiner Ansicht können solche Koordinationen den Verwandten des Quastenflossers den Schritt an Land erleichtert haben. Tiere der rezenten Arten gehen jedoch nicht am Meeresboden umher, und ihre Flossen berühren nicht einmal den Boden, etwa beim Beschleichen ihrer Beute, wobei die Brustflossen um 180 Grad um die Längsachse gedreht werden können. Wenn der Quastenflosser schnell schwimmen will, benutzt er seine mächtige Schwanzflosse (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Quastenflosser sind Nachtjäger und Driftschwimmer, die auch die schwächste Wasserströmung für die Fortbewegung ausnutzen. Ihre großen Brust- und Bauchflossen verwenden sie zum Ausbalancieren (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

Tagsüber halten sich die Quastenflosser in Lavahöhlen auf, die auf den Komoren zwischen 150 und 200 Meter unter dem Meeresspiegel liegen. Die vor Sulawesi gefundenen Tiere lebten in einer 155 Meter tief gelegenen Kalksteinhöhle. In den zum Teil sehr geräumigen Höhlen leben bis zu 16 Tiere. Mit Sonnenuntergang verlassen die Tiere einzeln ihre Höhle. Ihre Beutezüge führen sie nur wenige Kilometer von ihrer Höhle weg und bis in 700 Meter Tiefe (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).

vorhandenes Gelenk im Schädel gestattet ihnen, ihr Maul rasch aufzureißen und so eine blitzartige Saugschnappbewegung durchzuführen, mit der sie ihre Beute rasch in das von spitzen Zähnen umgebene Maul bringen (Wikipedia; Khalaf, September 2015).
