Bale Bage

135 m2 | Architectural Competition | Yogyakarta | Community Center | 2023 Tools: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Enscape, Figma

This project was completed within three months and focused on creating a communal public space for people with informal settlements in Kampung Jogoyudan, Yogyakarta. In this project, we were instructed to accommodate social and learning functions through a sustainable, place-making-oriented design that emphasizes the community.

05 | BALE BAGE COMMUNITY CENTER

Along with my two teammates in this project, we designed a community center with its form taking inspiration from one of Yogyakarta cultural significance, Joglo house. The community center also uses bamboo as the main material, a sustainable material that is close to the locals of Jogoyudan and can be easily constructed together. This focus on local identity thus creating a sense of belonging in the community center.

Poverty to this day continues to be an issue in urban population. Around 7% of urban population lives just barely above the poverty line, and often reside in overcrowded and insufficient housing such as slums and informal settlements. These settlements generally have uneven arrangements due to a lack of planning, and are also crammed with two functions as a place to live (the first place) and as a place to work (the second place). Third places, or proper communal spaces for social and recreational activities are usually lacking in these underdeveloped settlements.

The 135,83 m2 site is located at Kp. Jogoyudan Road No. 594E, RT.31/RW.07, Gowongan, Jetis District, Yogyakarta City, Special Region of Yogyakarta 55232 (-7.784690, 110.269616). Gowongan is near Yogyakarta’s downtown, and is crammed with informal settlements near Code River.

Design Concepts

Local Identity

The form is made by transforming the traditional form of the 'joglo' roof and the roof of the 'kampung' house that symbolizes local identity into a simpler form. The building takes the philosophy of the pendopo on the joglo, which is an open space that can be visited by anyone and establish friendly and family relationships with other visitors inside.

Flexibility

The community center is designed to be as flexible as possible with its functions and thus can only be divided into two zones. The outer zone is the play zone which caters the recreational needs of people. The inner zone both in the first and second floor is social and learning zone which can be used for gatherings such as village meetings, youth organizations, children studies, religious studies, etc.

Sustainability

The sustainable and lightweight nature of bamboo makes it an ideal material for a community center. Following traditional Javanese Joglo-style architecture, the bamboo structure contributes to the durability and strength of the roof. The roof structure is then covered with roof tiles and completed with some traditional ornaments on the edges. The bamboo blinds as its facade control and maximize the natural light coming in while allowing air to circulate inside as natural ventilation.

Stone Garden

1.200 m2 | third-year architectural design studio | Bandung | Visitor Center | 2022 Supervisor: Dr. Ing. Andry Widyowijatnoko, S.T., M.T. Tools: AutoCAD, Rhino, Grasshopper, Enscape

This project was completed within half a semester. Focusing on creating a visitor center in The Stone Garden, Bandung, we were given instructions to create a multi-mass building that accommodates various functions such as ticket sales, exhibitions area, and commercial area. The aim of this project is to create a design that is in line with the nature of Stone Garden.

13 | STONE GARDEN VISITOR CENTER

In this project, I designed the building mass as if it is an extension of the ground, creating a landscraper in the land of the stone garden. Using aluminium composite panel as the main material, the building also becomes a tourist attraction in the stone garden, focusing on the garden of reflected stone exhibitions at the center of the three radial masses of the building.

Situation Plan

Stone Garden Citatah is a tourist attraction with views of expanse of karst rocks located in Padalarang, Bandung. These rocks are formed naturally from the coral reefs in the ancient lake years ago. As of today, this area becomes a beautiful natural landscape, the stone garden. The visitor center is designed to be completing and respecting the nature of the stone garden.

Ruby

1.250 m2 | third-year form and structure studio | Pavilion | 2023

Supervisor: Dewi Larasati, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.

Annisa Safira Riska, S.Ars., M.Ars.

Tools: AutoCAD, Rhino, Enscape, Figma

This project was completed within a month and focused on the elaboration of one of the structure system, which is form active system. Form active systems are formed mainly by flexible materials that are tied at the ends in a certain shape so that they can carry their own loads. In this project, along with my two teammates, we used cable structure as one of the form active systems.

21 | RUBY PAVILION

The massing of this pavilion was created into a hexagon geometry which symbolizes diamonds/gems. To reinforce the uniqueness of the gem, we chose 'Ruby' as the concept, which is a form of red gem. Therefore, the structure of this building uses red steel material with a hexagon geometry that symbolizes the side of the diamond.

RUBY PAVILION | 22

Cable elements in the building act as tension elements while beam and column elements act as compression elements. The function of the cable is not only as a funicular element, but also to make it possible for the structure to have a wide span. Each column point has 4 force directions which cancel each other out so that all forces received by the system are zero (F=0).

OTHER WORKS

These are a compilation of my other architectural works, both academic and non-academic from 2021 to 2023 such as architectural designs, maquettes, posters, and hand sketches.

Plaza Pasupati

2.500 m2 | third-year architectural design studio | Community Center | 2023 Supervisor: Dr. Ir. Agustinus Adib Abadi, M.Sc. Tools: AutoCAD, Rhino, Enscape, Figma

This project was finished within half a semester and focused on creating a communal public space under the Pasupati Bridge, Bandung. We were instructed to design a community center that encourages social interaction by accommodating various functions such as social, sports, and commercial area. In this project, I designed the building as interconnected masses, and focused on the plaza and sports area as its main interaction center. The building also uses ramp as the main circulation, taking account the need of inclusivity of the design.

Underwave Shelter

Second-year form and space design studio | Shelter | 2022 Supervisor: Annisa Safira Riska, S.Ars., M.Ars. Maquette

This project was finished within a month and focused on using analogy as an approach of forming a shelter building. In this project, I designed a shelter that uses analogy from the phenomenon of a tidal wave. Tidal waves occur because of the still water that looks like it is moving because of the earth's rotation, thus creating the wave. The circular plain of the shelter represents the earth with columns and curved roof surfaces on it which represent water. These columns are then rotated just like water moving in a circle to form waves.
