PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION

The Parks and Recreation Commission is a council appointed committee that acts as a liaison between the constituents and the Parks and Recreation Department. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 11:30am at the Community Center. These meetings are open to the public and we welcome everyone to bring their ideas in front of this hard working committee.

Let’s celebrate 2020 by going back in time to the Roaring 20’s! There will be dancing, light refreshments and door prizes. This is sure to be a special memory for a dad and his little girl no matter her age. Make this evening part of your family tradition. There will be an option to have dinner at the venue from 6:30-7:30pm for $20 per couple. Extra meals are $10 each. Must purchase couple meal before adding additional dinner. Deadline to purchase the dinner will be August 3. Make sure before this deadline you have verified your purchase of the meal. Sorry, there will be no walk-ins for the meal. Rosie’s Photography will be on site to take pictures. These will be available for purchase as well as packages.

All rentals are subject to the availability of certified lifeguards and managers. The pool is available for private rentals June 19 through August 9, during times when the pool is closed to the public. Reservations must be made in person at the Deer Park Community Center.

Rental guidelines are available at the Parks and Recreation Office at 610 East San Augustine.

The pool is available to rent to residents and non-residents of Deer Park. All private party reservations must be made at least 2 weeks prior to scheduled event. Payment must be remit in full.

Renting the pool guarantees that you will have private area for you to conduct your party but not necessarily have the entire pool space for your party. This means that there could be a party at the big pool and the children’s pool at the same time. There will be no rentals available while the pool is open to the public. Max number of people at private rentals is 92 people (100 including 8 staff members).

Join us for a movie by the pool! Come out to the Dow Park Pool and bring a blanket to sit on the deck or your swimsuit to take a dip! Flotation device allowed but must be see-through. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult (18+).

Join us for a Zumba party like never before! This is definitely not your typical water workout! Shake, shimmy and sizzle in the water as we create some heat Zumba style! Aqua Zumba is safe, effective and a challenging water - based workout that integrates the Zumba formula and philosophy into traditional aqua fitness. Class is limited to 50 people. Please bring water shoes.

Private swim lessons are available for any skill level and any age. Separate from group swim lessons, each private lesson is 50 minutes in length and set up in one participant to one instructor ratio. Children must be at least three years old to enroll. Lessons are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon/evenings. You cannot book just one lesson per week.

REFUND POLICY

Due to the overwhelming response of participation, the Parks and Recreation Department has adopted a stringent refund policy for Camp Crabgrass. Cancellation and refunds will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

NATURE CAMP

Love the outdoors? If the answer is yes, then nature camp is the place to be! Every day is fun-filled with outdoor themed activities. We spend our time outside on the playground, playing outdoor games and enjoying all the things that nature has to offer.

VIPAR PROGRAM

Enjoy a full week of FUN and EXCITING activities including swimming, archery and much more. Lunch is included, campers will need to bring 2 snacks and drinks per day. Parent packet must be filled out before the first day of camp.

SCAVENGER HUNT

Are you a craft junkie who loves to make things or maybe you are hoping to get in touch with your creative side? This class offers two crafts you can make and take home the same day- A colorful pom pom coaster and a marbled clay dish for your coins or rings. Spend a leisurely mid-morning with us and you might be surprised with the end result.

Callng all volunteers ages 12 - 15 (as of June 1, 2020)! We are looking for volunteers to help us with our summer programs and general parks and recreation operations! The VIPAR (Volunteers in Parks and Recreation) program helps kids build a foundation of knowledge, a positive attitude and skills that are needed to be a future employee. VIPAR applications can be found online at deerparktx.gov/1256/VIPARProgram are due by June 6.

DICE DICE BABY (BUNCO FOR YOUTH)

Bunco is not just a game for your mom! It is a fun dice game that you play with a partner, but the partners switch up. It is easy to learn and has great energy especially when you BUNCO! We will play 8 games and total wins and losses for each person will be tabulated. Prizes will be awarded for Most Wins, Most Losses, Most Buncos and a consolation roll off.

LIFE SKILLS

Teens are welcome to come and learn skills they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. This three day program welcomes teens to come and learn skills that are applicable in every day life.

Monday- Resume Building; learn to draft a resume that catches the attention of a future employer.

Tuesday- Balancing Finances; learn how to write a check, and when to save, when to spend.

ARCHERY CAMP

Join us for a crash course in the basics of recurve archery. Archery instills confidence, greater attention spans and a willingness to try other sports activities for those who participate. Participants will be taught about safety and archery skills by three US Archery level certified instructors and will spend time at a certified archery range with X1 archery. Participants will bring a sack lunch.

PAINT ME

Fridays | July 17, 24, 31 & August 7 | 1-3pm

Community Center | All Ages | $10 per painter

Paint Me is a plaster painting opportunity for all ages to come and create a masterpiece. This activity is a basic painting class with limited instructions available for 40 painters. Several different ceramics pieces will be available to paint and ready to take home that day on a first come, first serve basis. All supplies are included.

PIZZA TRIVIA

Have your teens to come join us for pizza and teen trivia. All participants will eat pizza and winner will receive a trophy.

July 20th- Binging Trivia: Does your teen sit home and binge watch shows on Netflix, Hulu, Disney +? This trivia is best for them as they will be asked questions about all the popular shows and movies on these platforms. *Possible spoilers*.

Learn basic fishing skills and techniques as well as some of the laws and regulations that govern the sport. We will include casting practice, fish identification and learning about habitats.

Parents, Guardians, friends, please come and enjoy this adult only game night to have fun before you get back in the grind of school responsibilities. If you enjoy “The Price is Right” and “Newlyweds” you will surely enjoy this event. All registrants will get a shot to participate, but not all wanting to participate will get to play. There will be prizes, fun, laughter and light refreshments.

Group classes are a fun and affordable way to get started with training. Classes are held with other dog/owner pairs also eager to learn. Dog moms and dads with the time and ability to stay committed to training week to week are encouraged to join in group classes! The Good Boy Obedience group class covers basic commands that will make life with your dog more enjoyable. Expect to put in work outside of class meetings. Group classes meet for one hour, once a week for 6 weeks with the first week for owners only. We will be conducting orientation and the dogs may stay home.

Calling all foodies! Learn the basics of cooking while you explore your inner chef. Feel at ease in the kitchen with these instructor-led age appropriate recipes. 4 days of fun and cooking with the last class set aside for a team cooking contest. Show what you learned and see who ends up victorious! There are no repeat on any recipes for each class so you can sign up for both in your age group.

ALL SKILLS VOLLEYBALL CAMP

This is a three day camp for the beginning to intermediate volleyball player looking to improve all areas of their game. Players will be broken up by age, ability and experience. This camp is designed for children ages 4-7 to promote volleyball, fitness and fun at an early age. Volleytots play with a lighter ball, a lower net, and a smaller court. Low Impact Aerobics is a cardiovascular exercise that elevates the heart rate, but is low impact on your joints. Sculpting and weights are also supplemented in this hour long session. Best deal around! No contract or sign up fees. Get fit and enjoy the fellowship with our instructor, Bobbie Butler, who has over 30 years experience. We are under the instruction of Grandmaster James E. Smith. He has over 50 years of experience in martial arts. Our foundational style is Chinese Kenpo. We teach traditional weapons such as bo staff, broad sword and escrima sticks that are included in the curriculum. We participate in karate tournaments and demonstrations throughout Texas. Fencing for the teen and adult fencer, both beginners and those with some experience. Our focus is largely on foil, but sabre and epee are also explored. We learn the basics of footwork and blade work, have open fencing and selfreferee. The final class of each month is given over to electric fencing just as a fencer would experience at a local tournament. No personal equipment or prior experience is required to start.

Sign up for our competitive, yet fun, indoor volleyball league! Our Adult Volleyball League is considered one of the best in the region with 2 different leagues to choose from. You can play in our Recreational Tuesday night league or our competitive Thursday Spike league. Games will start at 6:30 pm and we have a maximum of 8 teams. City of Deer Park Adult softball league is one of the best leagues around Houston! Come join us as we play a 9-week schedule with doubleheader games as well as an end of season tournament to determine the overall winner! Our league is an ASA modified league. Make-up games will be moved to the end of the season if there is to be a rainout. Payment must be made in order to secure your spot. Games start at 6:30 pm with a maximum of 12 teams. The summer track program is offered for grades K-12th and is a great way for kids and teenagers to compete and get in shape! The program runs from June 1 until August 10 and is instructed by veteran track coaches Andy Williams and Tendai Lynch. Practices are held during weekday mornings beginning June 1 and will take place at the Deer Park High School North Campus off 402 Ivy Avenue. Each participant will receive a team jersey! Birth certificate required to compete.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE JIMMY BURKE ACTIVITY CENTER IS THE ONLY FACILITY THAT ALLOWS THE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL.  Rentals for this facility cannot be booked past 11 pm on Friday and  Saturday and 10 pm on Sunday ‐ Thursday.  Police Department presence is mandatory with alcohol consumption. The rate for an officer is $35 per hour (price subject to change without  notice) and  you are required to have them during the entire rental. The payment is made directly to the Deer Park Police Department and will not be included in your initial rental cost. Alcohol cannot be sold on  the premises. If alcohol is being served a cover charge for entry cannot be imposed on guests.
