FANNY BRICE (1891 – 1951) was a trail-blazer in the entertainment world. She was born to Jewish immigrants and became a star, building a career in vaudeville, theatre, film and radio. Ms. Brice made her stage debut at Frank Keeney’s Theater in Brooklyn in 1906 and it became clear that she was destined to become a showbiz legend. In 1910 she was contracted by Florenz Ziegfeld for his 1910 Follies and she became Broadway’s highest-earning star. She performed in 11 Ziegfeld productions and headlined the 1921, 1934, and 1936 Follies, where she performed her most famous character, Baby Snooks. Ms. Brice would continue to perform Baby Snooks for a weekly radio program until the end of her life. In 1918, Ms. Brice married Nick Arnstein and the couple had two children together. She married songwriter and stage producer Billy Rose in 1929; they divorced in 1938. A beloved barrier-breaking comedienne and performer, Ms. Brice was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ms. Brice’s career was instrumental to the future of women in comedy. Her life story and rise to stardom inspired the musical Funny Girl.

ISOBEL LENNART (Book) (1915-1971) was born in Brooklyn. Afflicted by polio as a child, Isobel became an avid reader, especially of movie magazines. She became a screenwriter for MGM (Love Me or Leave Me, Inn of the Sixth Happiness, The Sundowners, Two for the Seesaw). She married actor-playwright John Harding and had two children, Joshua and Sarah. Some 24 films, three Academy Award nominations and on Writers Guild Laurel Award for Lifetime Achievement later, she turned to playwriting with Funny Girl in 1964. A Tony Award nomination for Best Musical followed and she wrote her last screenplay for the film adaptation in 1958. Ms. Lennart died in a car accident in 1971. Funny Girl was deemed “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress (2016).

HARVEY FIERSTEIN (Revised Book). Author of Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage Aux Folles (both Tony Award winners); Kinky Boots, Newsies, Casa Valentina (all Tony nominated); A Catered Affair, Safe Sex and Bella Bella. Television scripts include “Hairspray Live!,” “The Wiz Live!” and HBO’s “Tidy Endings.” He gave Tony-winning performances in Hairspray and Torch Song Trilogy, and starred in Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage Aux Folles, Gently Down the Stream and Bella Bella. JULE STYNE (Music). 1905-1994. Broadway: Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Peter Pan, Bells Are Ringing, Gypsy, Funny Girl. He is considered one of the greatest composers in the history of American musical theatre. Collaborators include Sammy Cahn, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Merrill, Leo Robin and E.Y. Harburg. He has composed legendary hits such as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “The Party’s Over,” “Let It Snow!,” “People,” “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” and Oscarwinning “Three Coins in the Fountain.” Jule Styne was elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Theater Hall of Fame and is a Kennedy Center Honoree.

MARGARET STYNE (Special Material).

Margaret Ann Bissett Brown began her career as a model and actress. She was married to composer Jule Styne, and together they composed “What Do Happy People Do?” Upon Margaret’s death, Funny Girl producers announced, “Margaret was a brilliant storyteller who represented her husband Jule Styne’s genius legacy with creativity and imagination…

Her Spirit will be imbued in our Broadway production of Funny Girl.”

BOB MERRILL (Lyrics). Broadway composerlyricist and screenwriter. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Bob could not read or write a note of music, but would plunk out his melodies on a toy xylophone. Nonetheless, he became one of the most prolific songwriters of the 1950s with such hits as “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window” and “Mambo Italiano.” In the late 1950s, Bob composed music and lyrics of New Girl in Town, Take Me Along, Carnival and Henry, Sweet Henry. Later he formed an enduring partnership with composer Jule Styne, leading to his greatest artistic success, Funny Girl (1964) starring Barbra Streisand which included the hit songs “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.”

Help local students experience their first ever Broadway show

D

iscover Broadway offers Truist Broadway members a way to

donate tickets so their valuable

seats do not go unused.

Thanks to the generosity of DPAC’s

Truist Broadway members, hundreds of tickets have been donated to deserving students from high schools and universities located throughout Durham.

For

many,

these

seats

provided opportunities for students to

experience their first ever Broadway show.

For those that we serve through this program, these opportunities are

more than just a ticket, they are a chance to experience something that could inspire goals and dreams for the future.

HERE IS HOW YOU CAN DONATE:

•

If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com.

•

You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused tickets will be transferred to an area student.

•

DPAC will handle all other details and provide instructions to the recipient on how to access their tickets.

PLEASE NOTE: Ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to the performance date. Discover Broadway donations do not provide tax donation receipts. 

GUEST ETIQUETTE

At DPAC, we’re committed to Guest Courtesy. Please remember to be a good neighbor to those seated around you.

After the Performance Yes, the lobby gets busy and the parking lots can be tricky, but please remain at your seats until the houselights come up.

As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, DPAC asks that you do not rush for the exits prematurely at the end of the performance.

Entering and Exiting the Seating Area Please time your exits and re-entry to the seating area to occur only at intermission or breaks between songs. This is a courtesy to other guests around you who will appreciate you keeping these disruptions to a minimum.

Kids at DPAC Please note that all guests require a ticket, regardless of age. Children under the age of 6 are not allowed at most DPAC performances including Broadway, Concerts and Comedy shows.

For some shows, DPAC will make recommendations on the appropriate minimum age based on the content and the length of the event. Parental discretion is always advised and judgment of the appropriateness of the content for each show should be made on an individual basis prior to purchase.

Children must be able to sit quietly in their own seat without disturbing other guests. As a further courtesy to our guests, DPAC recommends one parent or chaperone for every one child in attendance.

It Can Wait Please save texting until AFTER the show. The light from phones is distracting to others throughout the theater. Please keep them turned off.

It’s Superstar Entertainment, Not a Food Fest Small snacks and drinks are welcome in the seating area, but as a courtesy to those around you, eat and drink as quietly as possible. Please know that odors and noisy wrappers can disturb others. We also ask that you finish sandwiches or other large food items before entering the seating area.

Photography / Video Recording Using Mobile Phones At DPAC, each event that we host determines their own policy on photography and video recording using mobile phones.

Please note that GoPros, tablets, and cameras of any kind are prohibited at all DPAC events. All Broadway shows prohibit photography and video recording.

Quiet Please Once the show starts, please let the stage be the center of attention. We ask that you turn off all cell phones and limit conversation. If children are attending this performance with you, please exit the theater immediately if they become restless or talkative. 

Ambassadors are offered unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to

attend DPAC’s varied and diverse events, which also having the chance to shadow DPAC staff members in guest services, ticketing and marketing roles.

These students report on their experiences via videos, online blogs and social media posts.

Through this program, DPAC provides Ambassadors with meaningful and

impactful experiences, while guiding their future careers in the arts.
