Like so many Durham residents, I recognize the jewel that DPAC is to Durham and the Triangle region.Though we’ve endured a few changes for everyone’s safety as we’ve attended shows recently, attendees have supported the health-related actions and worn their masks cheerfully.That’s the true spirit

Like so many Durham residents, I recognize the jewel that DPAC is to Durham and the Triangle region.

I’m thrilled to say that DPAC, after more than a decade, is continuing to showcase the energy, the passion and great entertainment with a list of performances that people will travel from miles around to see.

I’m thrilled to say that DPAC, after more than a decade, is continuing to showcase the energy, the passion and great entertainment with a list of performances that people will travel from miles around to see.The awardHAMILTON is set to return for three dynamic weeks in May. If you have seen it before, now is your time to see it again. If you’ve never seen it, trust me and hundreds of thousands of others who have seen the show, you are in for a treat.

This season will feature some of Broadway’s biggest hits, concerts, comedy shows and special events to ever take the DPAC stage. You won’t want to miss the return of the Broadway sensation WICKED and the show of a lifetime Disney’s THE LION KING

There are other shows and artists I’m sure you won’t want to miss, including RENT, a perennial rock musical that premiered on Broadway in the 90s, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Hadestown, and Neil deGrasse Tyson, the renowned astrophysicist and author.Those are just a few of the superstar performances that are featured this season.

DPAC fan favorites and first-time performers will also be taking the stage throughout the upcoming season, including Patti LaBelle, Jo Koy, Derek Hough, and David Foster and Katharine McPhee

At DPAC, we see live performing arts and entertainment events as a shared human experience; an experience that some say is now more important than ever.

Please know that this experience is made possible by dedicated, authentic and kind people that truly care. All the professionals working at DPAC are here to help you. They are trained and knowledgeable and want you to have the best experience possible.

As guests at this event, you are essential to this live experience—the show would not go on without you. So, to help you (and the other guests seated around you) to have the best time possible, we ask that you carefully review and consider these important suggestions, tips, and requirements.

• Be Helpful – We ask that you always cooperate with the ushers and other DPAC staff. They are there to help you, ensure the performance starts as scheduled, and to keep an orderly environment.

• Be Kind – Please treat these DPAC staff members with respect and kindness. They want you to have a great time, and they deserve respect and a positive work environment.

• Be in the Moment – DPAC asks that you set your phones aside and fully be in the moment during this performance. Two very important reminders…

• The Broadway shows we host are very stringent in that they do not allow photos or videos during the performance as they are disruptive and can distract the cast and those seated nearby.

• And please silence your phones and wait until intermission or the end of the performance to check for messages. CONTINUED 

• Be Respectful – Be respectful of the other guests, limit conversation until intermission or after the show and if you have children with you, please step out of the seating area if they become restless or talkative.

• Be Engaged – Be engaged in the show! But please do not sing along with the actors. It distracts from the performance onstage and is not thoughtful to those seated around you.

• Be Careful – If you are having a mixed drink, beer, or wine, please be careful. Drink some water and ask for assistance if you are ever not feeling your best.

• Be Patient – Be patient with any lines for snacks, beverages, and restrooms. We know they sometimes can be long, and space is tight. We promise that everyone will get their turn.

• And Don’t Forget – Unwrap all candies now and refrain from making any noise with snacks and beverages during the performance.

And now it’s showtime…relax, sit back, and get ready to immerse yourself in this live experience. We thank you for being here and hope that this event creates positive memories that truly last a lifetime. 

Professional Facilities Management, Inc. (PFM)

PFM is a wholly-owned for-profit subsidiary of Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), incorporated in 1988 in response to a growing need for objective evaluation and management of small-to-medium-sized performing arts facilities in geographically-diverse locations. One of the first companies of its kind, PFM’s business is focused on what we know and do best – performing arts “product.”

In 1929 Sir J.M. Barrie bequeathed PeterPanto GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN IN LONDON, which has benefited thousands of children since then. The producers are proud and happy that everyone who has bought a ticket for today’s performance of PeterPanis helping towards making the hospital the incredible center of hope it is today.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST

NOLAN ALMEIDA (Peter Pan) last appeared as Crutchie in Newsies. Nolan has always loved the story of Peter Pan. So much so that in fifth grade he tried to publish a sequel. It did not get published. Getting to play this role and introduce his generation to the magic of Peter Pan is a dream come true. Endless gratitude to his acting coach Danielle Keaton for introducing him to the art in acting, as well as his family and friends for their constant support.

CODY GARCIA (Mr. Darling, Captain Hook) is a tall and stereotypically indecisive nonbinary Libra that would definitely rather have chocolate desserts than fruity desserts. This isn’t the first time Cody has professionally played a pirate, and it most likely won’t be the last. Non-pirate credits: National tours: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Wonka), Elf (Buddy). RAYE ZARAGOZA ( Tiger Lily ) has been called “one of the freshest and most compelling voices in folk music today” by NPR. The LA-based singer-songwriter recently released her third studio album Hold That Spirit , informed by her identity as a woman of mixed Indigenous (Akimel O’otham descent), Asian and Latina heritage. You can hear her music on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “NCIS,” and Netflix’s “Spirit Rangers.” She is thrilled to return to the theatrical stage. @rayezaragoza

SIR J.M. BARRIE ( Author, Original Play ) (1860—1937) was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland. When their parents died, Barrie became guardian to three boys whom he had met in Kensington Gardens in 1897. The boys are thought to be the inspiration for the creation of Peter Pan. Peter Pan first took place in 1904 and remarkably Barrie girted the copyright to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London in 1929, later extended for perpetuity in the U.K.

CAROLYN LEIGH ( Lyricist ) ( 1926—1983) is perhaps best known as the lyricist of that classic of the musical theatre, Peter Pan. She not only created the lyrics but was also the originator of the idea for a musical about the playground for adults called Wall Street – and this became the musical How Now, Dow Jones on which she collaborated with Elmer Bernstein and for which she received a Tony nomination. Before Mr. Bernstein, her partner was mainly Cy Coleman and as a words and music team

they gave the nation some of its top popular hits: “Witchcraft,” “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “Firefly,” “Hey, Look Me Over,” “Pass Me By” and “When in Rome.” They also gave Broadway one of its most delicious scores in Wildcat , starring Lucille Ball and Little Me starring Sid Caesar.

MORRIS “MOOSE” CHARLAP (Composer) (1928—1974) wrote the original score for the 1954 Broadway musical Peter Pan starring Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard. The show was presented as a limited 16-week engagement and before opening night every performance was sold out. Charlap went on to write the scores for Broadway’s Woop-Up (1958), The Conquering Hero (1961) and Kelly (1965).

BETTY COMDEN (1917—2006) and ADOLPH GREEN (1914—2002) (Additional Lyrics), recipients of the 1991 Kennedy Center Honors, began as a group called The Revuers, which included Judy Holliday. Their first musical was On the Town , also the first for Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins and for which they wrote the book and lyrics and two leading roles for themselves. With Bernstein they also collaborated on Wonderful Town. With Jule Styne they wrote book and/or lyrics to Bells Are Ringing, Do Re Mi, Say Darling, Subways Are For Sleeping, and Hallelujah, Baby! They also created book and/or lyrics to Applause and On the Twentieth Century and The Will Rogers Follies. They have received six Tony Awards. Their many movie musicals include The Band Wagon, On the Town, Bells Are Ringing, It’s Always Fair Weather, and Singin’ In the Rain, which was voted one of the ten best films of all time by the American Film Institute. Their non-musical films are Auntie Mame and What a Way to Go. Members of the Dramatists Guild Council, they enjoyed performing their own works under the title A Party With Comden and Green.

AMANDA GREEN ( Additional Lyrics ) is proud to contribute additional lyrics to this beautiful bold re-imagining of Peter Pan and the work of her late great father, the brilliant Adolph Green & Betty Comden. JEROME ROBBINS ( Original Director and Choreographer ) (1918—1998) is world renowned as a choreographer of ballets is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets, as well as his work as a choreographer/ director in theater, movies, and television. His Broadway shows include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, West Side Story, The King and I, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Miss Liberty, Call Me Madam, and Fiddler on the Roof. His last Broadway production in 1989, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director. LARISSA FASTHORSE ( Additional Book ), (Sicangu Lakota Nation) is a 2020 MacArthur Fellow, award winning writer, and co-founder of Indigenous Direction. Larissa made her Broadway debut in 2023 with The Thanksgiving Play , making her the first known female, Native American playwright to be produced on Broadway. The Thanksgiving Play has been one of the top ten most produced plays in America for several seasons. The Best of High School Musical Theater Talent in our Region

The DPAC Rising Star Awards celebrates outstanding achievement in high school musical theater by focusing attention on the meaningful work being done both on and off stage by dedicated teachers and students.

As the regional qualifying event for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA), also known as The Jimmy Awards®, the DPAC Rising Star Awards brings together high school musical theater students from Durham, the Triangle and the surrounding region to perform and compete for a chance to represent DPAC in the national finals in New York City.

In Spring 2023, DPAC named Lilly Pritchard (Heritage High School) and Noah Colvin (Enloe High School) DPAC’s Rising Star Awards’ Best Actress and Best Actor winners. Lilly and Noah then went on to compete nationally at The Jimmy Awards®.

This year, the national competition included a total of 96 nominees representing 48 Regional Awards Programs from across the country.

Lilly and Noah worked with Broadway professionals and made their Broadway debuts on Nederlander’s Minskoff stage where Disney’s The Lion King performs to sold out audiences nightly. Both represented DPAC and Central North Carolina exceptionally, and we cannot wait to see their bright futures.

Help local students experience their first ever Broadway show

Discover Broadway offers Truist Broadway members a way to donate tickets so their valuable seats do not go unused.

Thanks to the generosity of DPAC’s Truist Broadway members, hundreds of tickets have been donated to deserving students from high schools and universities located throughout Durham. For many, these seats provided opportunities for students to experience their first ever Broadway show.

For those that we serve through this program, these opportunities are more than just a ticket, they are a chance to experience something that could inspire goals and dreams for the future.

HERE IS HOW YOU CAN DONATE:

• If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com.

• You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused tickets will be transferred to an area student.

• DPAC will handle all other details and provide instructions to the recipient on how to access their tickets.

PLEASE NOTE: Ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to the performance date. Discover Broadway donations do not provide tax donation receipts. 

At DPAC, we’re committed to Guest Courtesy. Please remember to be a good neighbor to those seated around you.

After the Performance Yes, the lobby gets busy and the parking lots can be tricky, but please remain at your seats until the houselights come up.

As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, DPAC asks that you do not rush for the exits prematurely at the end of the performance.

Entering and Exiting the Seating Area Please time your exits and re-entry to the seating area to occur only at intermission or breaks between songs. This is a courtesy to other guests around you who will appreciate you keeping these disruptions to a minimum.

Kids at DPAC Please note that all guests require a ticket, regardless of age. Children under the age of 6 are not allowed at most DPAC performances including Broadway, Concerts and Comedy shows.

For some shows, DPAC will make recommendations on the appropriate minimum age based on the content and the length of the event. Parental discretion is always advised and judgment of the appropriateness of the content for each show should be made on an individual basis prior to purchase.

Children must be able to sit quietly in their own seat without disturbing other guests. As a further courtesy to our guests, DPAC recommends one parent or chaperone for every one child in attendance.

It Can Wait Please save texting until AFTER the show. The light from phones is distracting to others throughout the theater. Please keep them turned off.

It’s Superstar Entertainment, Not a Food Fest Small snacks and drinks are welcome in the seating area, but as a courtesy to those around you, eat and drink as quietly as possible. Please know that odors and noisy wrappers can disturb others. We also ask that you finish sandwiches or other large food items before entering the seating area.

Photography / Video Recording Using Mobile Phones At DPAC, each event that we host determines their own policy on photography and video recording using mobile phones.

Please note that GoPros, tablets, and cameras of any kind are prohibited at all DPAC events. All Broadway shows prohibit photography and video recording.

Quiet Please Once the show starts, please let the stage be the center of attention. We ask that you turn off all cell phones and limit conversation. If children are attending this performance with you, please exit the theater immediately if they become restless or talkative. 

Sharing the Magic of Live Entertainment

DPAC’s Local Hero Spotlight presented by Longfellow Real Estate Partners recognizes those in the Triangle who are doing great deeds in service to their communities or families. Recipients receive a VIP night out at DPAC and in many cases, this night out provides an opportunity for those who have never been to DPAC to have their first-ever live theater experience.

Each fall, DPAC selects 30 high school students from across Central North Carolina who are passionate about live entertainment to serve as Performing Arts Ambassadors throughout the school year.

Ambassadors are offered unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to attend DPAC’s varied and diverse events, which also having the chance to shadow DPAC staff members in guest services, ticketing and marketing roles. These students report on their experiences via videos, online blogs and social media posts.

Through this program, DPAC provides Ambassadors with meaningful and impactful experiences, while guiding their future careers in the arts.
