Caring for the community is central to the mission and vision of Doylestown Health. It would be nearly impossible to tell our story without first highlighting the important relationship with our community that has sustained us for nearly one hundred years.

In the early 1900s, community healthcare needs in Doylestown were growing rapidly. Patients in need of immediate care were transported out of town and the women of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA) were working diligently to raise funds to build the first hospital.

Driven by their vision of caring for people in their own community, the VIA took a bold step and hired a visiting nurse, Miss Clementine Johnstone, in 1916. So launched our traditions of nursing excellence and caring for the community that flourish today across Doylestown Health.

This issue of the Doylestown Health Foundation Philanthropy Report is unique as it showcases a collaborative community of supporters. We are proud to visit some of our partners in philanthropy who make a difference with their gifts to Doylestown Health and with their efforts to help our community thrive.

We hope you will share our appreciation for what donors do for Doylestown Health and for others. Together, Barb and Tom Hebel, Joyce and Bob Byers, Sr., Frank Terry, and Fred Beans have made gifts that will help secure our future.

One year ago, Doylestown Health launched the most ambitious and comprehensive fundraising effort in our history. ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health has galvanized our community and transformed our hospital campus with the Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion and Ambulatory Center. The new Community Center at Pine Run is now open and adds a new dimension to healthy retirement living.

These visionary projects demand equally bold investments.

Inside Doylestown Hospital on any given day, hundreds of patients, physicians, caregivers, volunteers, and visitors cross paths. Treatments and procedures are performed—some are complex, and some routine. At the exact same moment, a patient arrives with chest pain in the Emergency Department, a healthy baby girl is born, a patient leaves with a knee replacement, a volunteer counsels a heart surgery patient, and a mom rings the bell to signify the end of her chemotherapy regimen. Each day at Doylestown Hospital is different, yet life-changing moments are constant.

At the heart of these life-changing moments are our nurses. They work tirelessly to care for patients in our community every hour of every day and are united in placing the needs of the patients first. With grace, knowledge, and warmth, they guide patients and families through some of the most joyful and painful times in life. No gesture is too small or too great for nurses who, with the same quiet confidence, can offer a patient a hand to hold or a surgeon an instrument.

Because of their dedication to education and training, nurses across Doylestown Health are prepared for anything, from stitches to stents. Hundreds of letters and comments from grateful patients and their families share stories of nurses that go above and beyond to explain a complicated procedure, comfort a family member, and deliver expert care with kindness and the utmost professionalism.

The nursing teams have helped Doylestown Hospital achieve national recognition for patient safety and quality, year after year.

We visited just a few of our nurses at Doylestown Hospital on a Thursday afternoon in August.

Our goal: to catch a glimpse of them doing what they do best—caring for patients with expertise and compassion.

OR | Barb McGuinness was drawn to work at Doylestown Hospital because of its reputation for excellence in patient care. She’s also found a “great team in my colleagues in the operating room. We listen to and respect each other, which makes it safer for our patients and a more pleasant work environment,” says Barb.

Patients of Doylestown Hospital have access to complex procedures such as the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DEIP) because of the expert, fellowship-trained surgeons and surgical teams on staff. “For cancer patients who have had a mastectomy, Dr. Angotti and Dr. Tamburrino will take skin and fat cells from the abdomen or another area and create a natural-looking breast with its own blood supply,” says Barb. With the new operating rooms on the horizon, Barb is “excited about how we’ll do even more to enhance the safety of our patients and staff, and utilize technology in these new ORs,” she says. “It’s awesome how the leadership of the hospital treats the nursing staff. It makes a difference for us and our patients.”

ICU | Sharon Held carefully monitors the heart rate and oxygen saturation for critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit, among her other responsibilities in this fast-paced unit. Of the many tools nurses use to care for patients, “communication and collaboration are essential. We work as a team and I can count on my co-workers,” says Sharon.

“Watching the progress of the construction of the Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion has been amazing,” she adds. “Our patients and their families will get to enjoy beautiful new rooms with natural light, and we will have more space for advanced technology and for our critical care teams to work together.”

IMU | After 23 years at Doylestown Health, Tara Sparling has confidence in the way “we genuinely care about our patients.” Today, as float nurse and unit coordinator, she’s managing transfers and ensuring patients are ready for discharge. “Nurses do so much more now. We anticipate people’s needs. Formally and informally we are case managers, making sure that patients have their care plans in place so they can continue to heal after they leave the hospital,” says Tara.

Among the many characteristics she admires about Doylestown Hospital, “I think it’s amazing that we are still independent,” says Tara. “It keeps us who we are.”

NICU | In the Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Suzanne Ryan cares for the hospital’s tiniest patients. “In Level II we take care of preemies born at 32 weeks of gestation. Right now, we have a few babies that just need to gain some weight before they can go home,” says Suzanne. As a nurse educator, Suzanne values the way Doylestown Hospital supports one-on-one patient education. “I can speak to this from what I do with new parents and from personal experience when my husband was a patient.” Being on the other side of the bed allowed Suzanne to observe her nursing colleagues.

“The nursing staff here is excellent. My husband was a patient and I witnessed it. The nurses in the catheterization lab and IVU were amazing and the quality of care here is just incredible,” she adds.

ED | Every day is unique in the Doylestown Hospital Emergency Department. “Today I’m caring for a patient who had a stroke,” says Chris Tranchitella. With a background as a travel nurse, Chris wanted to put down roots and “sought to work at a top-quality community-based ED,” he says. “I found that at Doylestown Hospital. There’s a hometown feel that you get here, but at the same time, you’re receiving clinically advanced care­—often beyond what you’d experience at a larger institution,” says Chris. Among the many benefits he’s found working as a nurse at Doylestown Health, Chris points out that “we are really well-supported with the resources we have to do our jobs and take care of our patients. The personal attention we give patients is exceptional. I think it’s because this hospital was started by and enriched by the community.”

CV/ICU | Joanne Friel appreciates that Doylestown Hospital is preparing to expand cardiovascular services. “Right now, I have two patients—one has atrial fibrillation and another is preparing for open heart surgery. It’s always busy,” Joanne says of her unit. No matter how busy it gets, “we treat our patients like family and we can do that because we work as a team. Our communication is excellent—among nurses all the way up to management.” After 16 years at Doylestown Hospital, Joanne remains “grateful every day I made the move to come work here.”

CV/IVU | Doylestown is one of only a few hospitals in the area performing the complex transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) surgery. Sarah Furness will be one-on-one with her TAVR patient for eight to 12 hours post-op. In the new year, Sarah and her unit will move to the Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion, an expansion that allows patients to remain in the same room as they recover and their care levels change. “I can’t wait for the new pavilion to open,” says Furness. “As nurses, we were invited to be part of the design process and I’m excited for the new unit, because we’ll get to stay with patients pre- and post-op with the new setup. Our amazing program will have room to grow, too,” she added.

Sarah also acknowledges the importance of funding for continuing education. With support from the Nursing Scholarship Program, she received her certification in critical care nursing. “I think it’s just one of the ways Doylestown Health truly supports nursing and patient care,” she says.

LDRP | After 30 years at Doylestown Hospital, Val Narisi still considers it an “honor to be a part of the most special time of a couple’s life—the birth of their child.” With approximately 1,400 births per year in the VIA Maternity Center at Doylestown Health, the labor and delivery unit is “always busy,” says Val, who is assisting a mother in labor and helping a new mom bond with her newborn. The relationship among the nurses and the physicians “is one of the reasons it feels like such a family here,” says Val. “It’s a really supportive environment and that allows us to take such great care of our patients. I have always felt valued as a nurse, by my colleagues, our patients, and the community.”

THE HEART OF HEALTHCARE

nurses are at the heart of patient care at Doylestown Health. With their commitment to advanced education and training, they dedicate themselves to improving the health of patients in our community with compassion and excellence.

Nurses today are respected for far more than their time-honored reputation for compassion and dedication. “Our nursing staff is consistently recognized for their professionalism and clinical competence along with their warm and caring bedside manner,” says Patricia “Patti” Stover, RN, MSN, NE-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at Doylestown Hospital. “It is touching to receive letters from grateful patients in our community that mention the positive difference nurses made in their experience.”

To achieve this ambitious goal, leadership at Doylestown Health increased the amount of tuition reimbursement dollars available to nursing staff. “We have been fortunate that our donors wanted to partner with us,” says Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Development Officer.

“Through Marv and DeAnn Woodall’s continued support and the generosity of additional donors, significant funding has been made available through the Nursing Scholarship Program.

This funding is a win-win for our nurses and the patients in our community.”

“I grow prouder of our nursing teams every day,” says Jim Brexler, President and CEO of Doylestown Health. “Each twelve-hour shift can hold a wide range of challenges and triumphs, and our nurses bring the same caring and competence to every bedside—whether a patient is at their most vulnerable, or at their strongest and most optimistic.”

“The scholarship program has afforded our nurses the opportunity to achieve advanced degrees, while they continue to deliver high quality, compassionate care to the patients and families we serve,” says Patti Stover.

More than 620 nurses are employed at Doylestown Health, including home care and hospice. In a day and age when nursing turnover at most hospitals is high, Doylestown Health attracts and retains quality nurses for the long term. “We have many nurses who have been here for twenty plus years and some for more than forty,” shares Stover. “Their tenure benefits our patients in many ways—from the patient experience to safety and positive outcomes.”

The number of certified nurses has also grown, as the scholarship program supports the tuition for coursework in advanced certification that allows nurses to build on specific strengths, passions, and expertise in a wide range of clinical and surgical specialties.

In addition to generous support from the community, the Nursing Scholarship Program continues to grow through proceeds from events such as Nurses’ Day celebrations, and a fashion show that the nurses organized. Last year, $40,000 was raised from these events.

“We are on a journey at Doylestown Health to continue to elevate our nursing practice,” says Eleanor Wilson, RN, MSN, MHA, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Doylestown Health. “A great deal more is expected of nurses now. As the population ages, nurses are taking care of sicker and frailer patients, and must keep pace with new developments in technology. The continuum of care extends beyond the hospital and into the community,” Wilson acknowledges.

The team spirit among nurses also extends to their collective support of ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health. “In addition to the contributions that nursing teams made during the building design process, they are helping us make healthcare safer and stronger for patients in our community by personally investing in the campaign,” says Wortman.

A landmark report by the Institute of Medicine in 2010 provided recommendations related to academic progression in nursing. It outlined a nationwide goal that at least 80 percent of nurses should have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) by 2020. “We are well on our way to this goal,” says Stover. “Six years ago, 45 percent of nurses at Doylestown Health had their BSN. Now, 72 percent of our nurses have earned their BSN as part of our BSN 2020 initiative.”

cultivating a better tomorrow for barb and tom hebel , the roots of their community involvement run deep

across Bucks County—with Doylestown Health as a centerpiece of their generosity.

The late actress Audrey Hepburn once said, “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” By all measures Barb and Tom Hebel are true believers, having dedicated their professional and personal lives to improving the health and beauty of the Doylestown community. In their respective roles as Vice President for Human Resources at Doylestown Health and President of Bucks Country Gardens, Barb and Tom share a remarkable commitment to the people and community around them.

“From a young age,” shared Barb, “we were brought up to give back. Our parents were tremendous examples for us. My father and mother worked incredibly hard and were generous in giving to others, even when they struggled to make ends meet.” Tom says one of the most valuable lessons he learned from his father, a pastor, was “just how important it is to support and be involved in your community. It’s my pleasure and privilege to connect with people through volunteering for Bucks Beautiful, the Chamber of Commerce, and at our church.”

It is a shared passion for business, gardening, and people that Tom says creates “opportunities to connect with so many folks in our community—our customers at Bucks Country Gardens, landscape design clients, and organizations that make a difference, like Doylestown Health.”

Of the Hebel family’s many connections to Doylestown Health, Tom recalls that one of the earliest partnerships was with Bucks Country Gardens as a sponsor and landscape designer of the Bucks County Designer House and Gardens. Held each year by the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA), proceeds benefit Doylestown Hospital and the VIA’s other community initiatives.

Barb joined the staff of Doylestown Health in 2000 as a recruiter in Human Resources. Now as Vice President, Barb oversees the daily operations of Human Resources, as well as several other departments, including Education, Volunteer Services, and Pastoral Care, to name a few. Barb and Tom “share admiration for the mission of the VIA and what the women of the VIA started,” says Barb.

“The Hebels are part of Doylestown Health’s immediate and extended family,” says Jim Brexler, President and CEO of Doylestown Health. “Barb and Tom are committed to the health of Doylestown, and they help us raise the bar in cultivating a healthy community. There’s not an event here or in the community that they are not involved in through Bucks Country Gardens or through the gifts of their time and leadership.”

As part of their commitment to the future of Doylestown Health, Barb and Tom continue to build on their philanthropic support. “They go above and beyond to support us,” says Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “Over the years, Barb and Tom have witnessed the tremendous progress we’ve made. Now they are demonstrating their faith in our future with their recent outright gift and their legacy commitment to support the priorities of ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health.”

When the Hebels look to the future, they are even more committed to remaining a part of the Doylestown community. “We want to stay in the place we love,” says Barb. “You don’t have to leave—you can get world-class healthcare right here. What makes Doylestown Health so unique is that the spirit of the VIA continues to guide us. We are progressive and innovative yet we have the most caring physicians and associates,” she continues. “I encountered that in my own patient experience; my children did as well and so has my mother at Pine Run Retirement Community.

We provide a tremendous continuum of care.”

“We have been blessed in our lives,” adds Tom. “Investing in the future of Doylestown Health means that it will be here tomorrow, and even stronger for the next generation of our family and families in our community.”

all seasons

for joyce and bob byers , sr ., the joy of giving launched successful careers and a thriving family business that allows them to make a difference year-round.

Every season is Christmas at the Byers’ Choice, Ltd., headquarters in Chalfont, Pennsylvania.

Just one step across the Christmas Museum threshold, and visitors of all ages are transported into a whimsical world featuring the signature “Carolers” figurines, beloved by collectors worldwide for their timelessness and charming handcrafted details.

The Carolers were originally imagined, designed, and created by Joyce Byers, who sculpted the first models at her family’s kitchen table in the 1960s. “Joyce couldn’t find decorations that we could afford and that truly represented the warmth and joy of the season,” Bob recalls. Initially the Carolers were gifts for family and friends, but demand for the figurines grew quickly as more and more people admired their delightful qualities.

Soon the entire Byers family was involved in production, and Bob was selling door to door. “I was in the construction business at the time,” he says, “and we were struggling to make ends meet. Once we finally got accepted to the New York gift show, I could stop banging on doors!

My advice is that if your spouse has a hobby, you should encourage it because you never know where it might lead,” he said with a smile.

Over the last forty years, the success of the Carolers has allowed Bob and Joyce to expand on another passion—giving back. A substantial portion of the Byers’ Choice yearly profits directly supports local, national, and international charities. The Byers Foundation was formed in 1982, and since then Bob’s dedication to philanthropy has been recognized with prestigious honors, including the National Caring Award, given to only five Americans each year. “We are regular people that God has blessed,” Bob says, “and we have a responsibility to help others, especially in our community.”

Doylestown Health is one of the many organizations that benefit from the Byers’ longtime involvement and generosity, as Bob has a special appreciation for the importance of good health.

“I have four stents and I wouldn’t be here without the capable doctors at the Reif Heart Institute,” he acknowledges.

Bob calls Dr. Auteri and Dr. Guidera his godsends. “They’re first-rate doctors. I’m proud to support Doylestown Hospital because one of the best ways you can give back is to make sure people are healthy,” he continues. “Doylestown Hospital is a community treasure and I want to make sure it’s here for families in our community, including the wonderful people that work with us at Byers’ Choice.”

According to Jim Brexler, President and CEO of Doylestown Health, “Bob and Joyce are incredibly civic- and community-minded people. Their early gifts to the hospital allowed us to expand and innovate, and serve more patients. Because of their most recent gift to the Second Century Fund, we can continue to grow and meet the needs of the community.”

“Transformational gifts from community leaders like Bob and Joyce demonstrate a vote of confidence in Doylestown Health and our future plans,” says Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “To have their support means a great deal. We are truly grateful for all they do to make us and our community stronger.”

Along with their leadership gift, Bob and Joyce chose a signature piece of artwork from their private collection to grace the reflection garden in front of the new Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion. Titled The Dance of the Cranes, the sculpture holds deep meaning for Bob. “To me it’s a symbol of rebirth, similar to what happens after you enter the hospital and are transformed by the life-restoring experience of being healed. The crane represents good fortune and longevity, and I came out of Doylestown Hospital with a whole new life,” he shares.

For Bob, the crane is as much a symbol of his journey as a beacon for others. “I thought it would be wise to do more good while I can still see the benefit it will have. I hope that I can encourage others to give back to Doylestown Health, too.”

a material difference together with his children and grandchildren , Frank Terry, founder of Marvic Supply Company, is a proponent of making a difference in the community.

With over fifty years of experience in the construction and building supply business, it was “only a matter of time before the folks at Pine Run recruited me to sit on the Buildings and Grounds Committee,” says Frank Terry, Board Chairman of Marvic Supply Company. As a resident of Pine Run Retirement Community, Frank had a front row seat to the construction of the new Community Center, affectionately known to residents as the “Hub.” Building materials run in the Terry family. Frank’s father ran a lumber yard and he and his four brothers worked alongside. In 1967 when the opportunity arose to buy a construction supply store, Frank says, “It was an answer to a prayer.” From its beginnings as a single location in northeast Philadelphia, Marvic Supply now comprises seven locations in five counties and currently employs a staff of nearly 100. Generations of the Terry family work together, just as Frank and his brothers did decades earlier. While Frank entrusts the day-to-day operations of the company to his son-in-law Dave Smith, and sons Rich and Wes, you can still find Frank lending a hand at the Marvic Supply offices.

The Terry family also shares numerous ties to Doylestown Health. Nancy (Terry) Smith currently volunteers in the Doylestown Hospital post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). “I’m amazed at the quality of care and type of procedures available,” she says. “You used to have to go downtown to get the kind of services that they offer now.”

Along with his siblings, Rich notes the quality of care at Pine Run Retirement Community.

“When our mom’s health declined, she could be cared for right on Pine Run’s campus at the Health Center in close proximity to my dad,” says Rich. His brother Wes had confidence that she would be in good hands because Pine Run is part of Doylestown Health. “The nurses took really good care of Mom,” says Wes. “They were so friendly and treated everyone—family and spouses—really well. Even though Mom’s gone now, Dad gets hugs from the nurses when he goes to visit friends in the Health Center.”

Ensuring a bright future for Pine Run Retirement Community, as well as for Doylestown Health, is important to Frank and his family. Frank took special interest in the Community Center’s early stages of construction; in fact, Marvic Supply furnished building materials for the exterior of the new Hub. During phase two of the construction of the Community Center, Frank eagerly anticipated its completion along with fellow residents, and made a gift to the One Vision campaign in direct support of the project.

“We are thrilled that our new Community Center has opened,” says Maria Santangelo, Executive Director of Pine Run Retirement Community. “Generous gifts from residents and the community have allowed us to create an exceptionally vibrant living community here at Pine Run. We want to share our gratitude with Frank for his generosity, and we’re delighted that Marvic Supply Company contributed to the project, too,” she continued.

“Pine Run Retirement Community and Doylestown Health are important to our family and our business,” says Dave Smith. “They enhance the quality of life in our community, which has an impact on the value of homes and attractiveness of homebuilding. When we’re successful, we can support even more initiatives,” he continues.

Giving back to Doylestown Health also means that employees of Marvic Supply will have access to the healthcare they need for generations to come. “I have been blessed in my life,” says Frank, “and I am glad that I can continue to make a difference for my family and the community that supports our business.”

the road to healthy living a personal commitment to health and wellness unites Fred Beans’ philosophies on business and philanthropy. With a generous leadership gift to the One Vision campaign, his dedication to improving the well-being of others will resonate for years to come.

By his own admission, Fred Beans is a “driven type of guy.” A resident of Doylestown for more than forty years, he is well known as the founder and president of the Fred Beans Family of Dealerships. Nationally recognized year after year for its commitment to quality, excellence in customer service, and charitable giving, the company employs nearly 1,700 people in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Fred’s dedication to health and wellness also influences his business strategy: he offers a wide range of wellness benefits to all employees designed to keep them healthier and happier. The Healthy Living program features nutrition coaching, healthy lunch-and-learn gatherings, fitness challenges, and access to the company’s wellness coordinator. “Being in business is a tremendous responsibility; and being a good role model is important,” says Fred. A recent profile in The Wall Street Journal detailed Fred’s own personal fitness training regimen and highlighted the now legendary push-up challenge that Fred undertakes to celebrate his birthday, raising the number of push-ups he does to correspond to his age.

Now at 80 years of age, “Every year is a bigger challenge,” says Fred.

Encouraging healthy living and providing quality healthcare through programs such as Doylestown Health’s Workplace Wellness Solutions “brings stability to our workforce,” notes Fred. “We want to support our people. We are blessed that we live in Doylestown and that we have the resources that we do.

Doylestown Health is a vital part of the community,” he continued.

Doylestown Health Workplace Wellness Solutions Another way Doylestown Health builds healthy communities is through Workplace Wellness Solutions, an innovative program that offers comprehensive occupational health services and personalized employee wellness programs to large and small businesses in Bucks County and beyond.

According to Allyson Gilmore, Program Director, “a healthy, engaged workforce helps a business achieve maximum productivity and success. With Workplace Wellness Solutions, we can tailor our program offerings to meet the unique needs and goals of each employers’ workforce.”

Some of the largest employers in Doylestown and Bucks County are among the 43 organizations currently participating with Workplace Wellness Solutions. Workplace Wellness Solutions leverages the expertise of Doylestown Health providers to conduct screenings and referrals, and to develop health education seminars and webinars on topics such as healthy eating and understanding healthy ranges for blood pressure and cholesterol. On-site health fairs, flu-shot clinics, and biometric screenings bring resources to the workplace, eliminating some of the time constraints busy employees may have in accessing information and preventive care in a timely manner.

Partnering with Workplace Wellness Solutions is an added value that companies like the Fred Beans Family of Dealerships use to recruit and retain staff. Consistent health coaching and wellness challenges are common across the dealerships. Endowed funds will provide a permanent source of income to benefit the people, programs, and highest priorities of Doylestown Health.

Per Doylestown Health’s Planned Gift Allocation Policy, the Foundation will redirect a pre-determined percentage of any realized planned gift to a restricted or unrestricted endowment fund. The remainder of the gift will be used immediately.

r doylestown health ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health launched a new era of philanthropy and transformation for our health system. Comprehensive by design, the campaign will ultimately impact every facet of Doylestown Health and advance our mission to improve the health and well-being of the patients and families we serve.

Just one year into the public phase of our campaign, philanthropic gifts are already making an impact with progress on our signature priorities, including the recent completion of the Pine Run Community Center. The Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion, slated for completion in 2020, will usher in a new era of patient care with both the Woodall Center for Heart and Vascular Care and the Clark Center for Critical Care Medicine under one roof. On our flagship campus, the Ambulatory Center will soon welcome patients for same-day surgery, orthopedic care, and rehabilitation services.

We extend our deepest thanks for the generous support we receive from our donors, including annual and leadership gifts, planned giving, corporate partnerships, and special events. These gifts accelerate our progress and ensure a future of independence and growth.

as the philanthropic arm of doylestown health , the Doylestown Health Foundation raises funds to safeguard the future of excellence in patient care and improve quality of life for all members of the community.

Embracing the community inspired the vision for Doylestown Health. In fact, the women of the Village Improvement Association (VIA) opened the doors of Doylestown Hospital in 1923 for this sole purpose. In the decades since, Doylestown has grown dramatically.

Our beautiful setting attracts new residents seeking unique arts and culture, quality schools, thriving businesses, and access to advanced healthcare.

Just as we embrace the community, philanthropic investments from our community have allowed us to grow to meet the healthcare needs of our families, neighbors, and friends.
