PAWS FOR THOUGHT

DowntownDog For Discerning Dogs & Pet Parents

I have a very conflicted relationship between my two dogs and technology. Let’s face it, technology makes my life (your life… our lives) much easier, like it or not. Between my phone, my tablet, my laptop and my desktop, essentially everything we need is at our fingertips. Social media, paying bills, renewing your vehicle registration, ordering groceries, getting new door knobs delivered… you get the message. Does this make our lives easier? For sure, but does all this make our lives better? No way!!

PUBLISHER DOWNTOWN DOG

Probably one of the only things (or two things in this instance) that keeps me grounded are my dogs. Without their natural and genuine excitability I am guessing that I would just about be an android. The innocence that pets provide is undeniable. One of the greatest thrills I have is walking our dogs. Whether we are out on an urban adventure, area sidewalks and walking paths or full on backwoods SYSCO BLU - EDITOR trails wandering among the ponderosa pines, ospreys and babbling brooks. There is always something that our dogs provide, a huge injection of fresh air, the distraction of walking through fields, up and down rolling hills and along the lakeside. Without their need for the outdoor exploits, I am not sure that I would do it.

In the end, it is them that cause me unplug and get outside. They are responsible for the joy that I get spending time with them, rain or shine. Sometimes we take the same route and sometimes we mix it up. The one thing that never changes is the abundance of joy that they get from being outside. Their excitement is infectious and does a whole lot of good for me!

DOG SPORTS IN THE OKANAGAN By Aaryn Secker, MEd

The Okanagan Valley is a great place to be a dog. Many owners may not be aware that the Okanagan is growing into a hub for canine sports such as agility, rally obedience, nose work, and more. There is something out there for anyone who wants to improve the bond they have with their dog, whether you’re looking to just have fun or maybe even push yourself to compete. The benefits of getting involved in canine sports are endless for both the dog and their human. In agility, the dog must navigate an obstacle course with the help of its human handler. This requires amazing teamwork and strengthens the dog’s mind and body. “I’ve always thought it was amazing to see two different species, who have such different

12 | DOWNTOWNDOG

ways of communicating, work together as a team to run a course.” says Jan Johnson of the Central Okanagan Dog Agility Club (CODAC). “This translates to a better relationship in all aspects of your life together.” If agility isn’t your speed, rally obedience (often shorted to rally-o or RallyO) is a sport designed to improve engagement between dog and handler. It is fun and motivational in itself, but also provides a great foundation for other activities. In rally-o, the dog and handler perform different obedience stations with the dog heeling briskly between each station. The skills practiced in rally-o, such as heeling, sitting, staying in place, and

working with distractions, are also transferable to everyday situations - like walking through a busy market! There are also several sports in which a dog can use its natural instincts. Providing a safe and structured outlet for these instincts can often help to manage behaviours that are causing training issues. For example, a dog that pulls you down the sidewalk as it sniffs everything in its path might benefit from nose work (also known as scent detection). Dogs are trained to search boxes, objects, rooms, and even vehicles for certain (legal!) odours. In the process, they learn cues for both starting and finishing the search, which can help when you’re out and about. For dogs that prefer to hunt by sight, lure coursing and chase ability were designed as an alternative to using hounds to hunt rabbits. Dogs run full-tilt through an open field, essentially chasing plastic streamers (the “bunny”) that whip around a course of pulleys, triggering the same instinct to chase. If you have a dog that likes to run, run, run, lure coursing or chase ability might be for you.

“What I’ve come to realize is that no matter the sport, it comes back to relationship.” says Sarah Knight, a coach at CODAC. “Whatever it is that your dog loves, that’s the sport you should choose.” So how do you get started? I’ve only described a handful of sports in this article, but they provide a good starting point. There are now several fantastic clubs and trainers in and around the Okanagan. Remember that everyone has their own styles of teaching and learning, different goals, and unique dogs, so it is important to find a trainer and a sport that motivates you. If you aren’t enjoying the experience, don’t be afraid to try something else or find a new trainer. When you find the right match, that’s when the magic begins. Aaryn is a founding member of the South Okanagan Dog Activities Association and member in good standing of the Canadian Kennel Club, National Whippet Club of Canada, Whippet Club of BC, and Central Okanagan Dog Agility Club. She competes in numerous sports with her whippet, Mars, and Italian greyhound, Juno Find them on Instagram: @HoundsandHiking

Every Dog Has Its Day

and Now Predator Ridge Has Its Day Too! One of the greatest gifts you can ever give yourself is an amazing place to live with your family... and of course your pets, dogs specifically! A humble abode that has space for everyone, located in a community that fully understands and embraces the importance of an outdoor lifestyle, that is equally as good for dogs as it is for people. Now take a drive (in your mind), rolling down the highway between Lake Country and Vernon, sounds pretty good so far. Now you turn off and start wandering up into the hills, past farms, fields and undulating dunes and ridges. As the land starts to open up you are immediately sucked into the glory that is Predator Ridge. The most noticeable feature obviously is the golf course. It is this very golf

16 | DOWNTOWNDOG

course that made the entire community famous. Home to Hockey Canada, many Telus Skins Games and the admiration of golf lovers from near and far. What you might not know is that there are thriving neighbourhoods surrounding the outer edges of the fairways, greens and ponds. In fact, Predator Ridge has budded into a four season community that provides so much more than two world class golf courses! It has become basecamp for all the riches that the Okanagan has to offer. With almost 1000 established homes already and many more on the way, this amenity rich community also has a vested history. To say that they are “dog friendly would be a massive understatement. For visitors to the area,

Predator has many options for you, if you are travelling with your pooch. The Lodge, Peregrine Cottages and Falcon Point Villas all have options to keep your puppy comfortable. Now… picture that you are not travelling, but you are relocating or lucky enough to be purchasing or building your retreat property. With all of this outdoor space, walking paths, access to lakes and even golf with your dog events. It seems to me that this is one of the greatest places on earth to be a dog! Even as you move around the community, you get a feel that they really do love dogs here. There are watering stations, tie up posts and poop bag stations (a dozen in total) readily available. Because let’s face it, it is hot in the Okanagan and dogs need something to drink too! A home buyers situation varies with age and circumstance. Certain homes are more appealing to certain people. It’s a fact that one real estate trend that

has emerged is people buying and designing houses with their puppies in mind. They are pursuing pet- friendly houses in the heart of pet-friendly communities. Built in pet cabinets and feeding stations are very popular. Having a dedicated dog washing station is an absolute asset after you get back from a long walk on the walking trails, or maybe Rover has just been running around outside in the fully fenced yard. Homebuyers are not just concerned about what will affect their personal lifestyle but are also taking their dogs lives into consideration. All of these “tweeks” to a house can certainly be incorporated into a new build, or the right contractor can certainly make these changes in a home that is new to you. Wesbild Holdings Ltd, is a privately held real estate holding company that has been building award winning master planned communities for decades. Now, let them bring your dream villa to life customized to your dogs needs… and your family’s needs too.

DOWNTOWNDOG.CA | 17

This is dog heaven, neighbourhoods interconnected by trails that are perfectly designed for your healthy lifestyle, and the dog needs that your canine companion requires too! Requests for dog friendly features first began to pour in to builders and architects around the mid 2000’s. Lounge areas with pet sized furniture, dressing stations, grooming and bathing areas, custom built cabinetry that perfectly blends feeding stations and watering holes are all requests that you can make when building or buying a home.

18 | DOWNTOWNDOG

Of course, your pup will need a place to run, a fenced yard full of pet friendly plantings, with a come-and-go doggie door, a utility room where you can dust off, shower, dry and dress Fido before he runs through the house jumps up on the living room couch! It’s no secret that dogs love somewhere warm to lie. Maybe that’s in front of the fireplace, or maybe that’s on a heated floor (that benefits you and your furry kids) or even, if you can believe it, heated perches in front of windows are becoming more and more popular.

In regards to master-planned communities with dogs in mind, Predator Ridge is at the forefront of the movement. Build a house, bring a dog (or two) and start to live your Okanagan dream. The outdoor lifestyle is a huge perk for living here and they have taken every consideration into mind.

Now, kick back and relax‌ you have chosen to be at Predator Ridge. You are comfortable, your family is comfortable and most importantly your dog is comfortable. Pet friendly communities rule!

Doing Things Differently Fairfield Animal Hospital is Truly Making A Difference Their moto reads “Experienced, Friendly and Compassionate” and I couldn’t agree with them anymore! If you are reading this, it is likely that you are a dog owner or at very least have a pet of some sort. When your fuzzy friend needs help, you will do anything in your power to get them better and back chasing balls at the beach. This is an unbiased article based on peoples experiences at a pet hospital in Kelowna, BC. Fairfield Animal Hospital is the only 24 hour, fully staffed emergency hospital between Langley and Calgary. They service a massive area and no doubt keep their clients pleased and coming back again as regular customers. Regular pet patients can be referred by regular daytime veterinary offices or used during the hours that these other vet offices are closed. Furthermore, a pet that is suffering from serious issues can be directly referred to Fairfield by any other veterinarian throughout the course of the day in anticipation of requiring after hours service. The beauty of this hospital is that you do not require a referral, if you are looking for day to day pet care or are having an emergency at midnight, Fairfield Animal Hospital is there for you! Obviously as a professional courtesy, they will stay in touch with your veterinarian, and keep in constant contact with information, updates and follow up

24 | DOWNTOWNDOG

notifications if need be. Most pet owners want to be involved in the healing process of their beloved pet. So, they are privy to all diagnostic materials, including radiographs so everyone involved can follow the progress of the situation. There are many veterinarian offices that do amazing things for pups and kittens, day in and day out. But, one of the many differences at Fairfield is that they offer so many services on site. You don’t have to go anywhere else to get the procedure done that your four-legged friend needs. They are known for their general practice and surgeries. Annual health exams, senior wellness, vaccinations and dental exams are all regular day

26 | DOWNTOWNDOG

to day services. Fairfield also perform a wide range of surgical procedures including spays and neuters, soft tissue and orthopedic procedures, as well as ophthalmic and gastro-intestinal surgeries. In house laboratory, which includes, digital radiology, CT Scanner, Ultrasonography, Endoscopy and various other specialty services. I am sure that you have heard the expression, “It’s the little things that really make a difference”. Well, this in fact could not be more true. As a pet owner and an active member in a community of pet owners I was happy to hear that other pet parents were able to share the same elation in these “little things’! A week after visiting Fairfield we received a card in the mail. It was a “welcome to the Family” card with what was certainly the nicest touch, engraved dog tags. Simply put… nice touch! You already had us with your superior customer service, amazing medical knowledge and clean facility, but now this! The experience doesn’t end there. If you need treats, food, toys, leashes and so on…. You have found the spot for all of your needs. It can be stressful for both you and your dog just getting to the veterinary hospital. Even just the process of loading your pet into a carrier, then the car, then the waiting room full of new sights and smells, and finally the examination. Most of the time, a high stress situation. It’s called the “white coat syndrome” and it is real, even for dogs! Now imagine if you could eliminate all this stress and anxiety by having Fairfield as your everyday pet doctor. Familiarity relieves almost all of that significant intensity. It also helps settle you, knowing that you are heading to see dedicated professionals that provide a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone that walks through the doors. Something that very few people consider is that if your pet is in medical distress and needs emergency care, they will not be too concerned with nervousness and jitters, all of that emotion will belong to the owner! Again, what if you were going somewhere that you knew your dog was going to get the finest care with knowledgeable and caring doctors and the most modern and top of the line equipment, your blood pressure should level off a little knowing that you are in goods… actually you are in the best hands! The title of this feature is Truly Making A Difference. The more people I ask, the more positive feedback I get. There is no doubt that the shared experiences that people have at Fairfield Animal Hospital with their dogs well-being, that they truly are making a difference. The veterinarians, behind the scenes personnel and front-line staff understand the love and affection that you feel you for your fur-baby! Because, well… they all have pets too!
