Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 with clasp Albuhera impressed to J.Trench Sergt Waggon Train, VF and appears genuine John Trench attested for the Northumberland Militia 7th May 1812 and was discharged at the age of 56 on 30th Nov 1852 as being infirmed and inadequate(!). His service papers state that his service totalled 23 years and 167 days – the variation in his service period resulting from a long gap between Sept 1914 and Oct 1931, just after his service with the “Waggon Train” and when he earned his MGSM. However, Mullin’s transcription of the MGS roll is at variance with the details recorded on this medal, as the recipient is named as J.French with entitlement to the Nive clasp only. Mullin, however, also records a MGSM to a J.Trench with Albuhera clasp in a private collection. The recipients service papers show the name John Trench though his enlistment date on these papers is almost one year after the Battle of Albuhera, so there seems to have been some confusion when issuing medals to French and Trench Est. $1,750

Born in Cape Town South Africa, and after a degree of globe -rotting, arrived in Hobart Town in February 1830 with letters from patrons that secured his appointment as overseer of the penitentiary under his brother. Later appointments included assistant superintendent of convicts in December 1830, justice of the peace in 1833, police magistrate at Circular Head in 1836, member of the Assignment Board and assistant police magistrate in 1838, assistant superintendent of the Male House of Correction in 1839, and private secretary to Sir John Franklin and clerk of the Legislative and Executive Councils in 1840. Other appointments followed including the management of the estates of William Lawrence and Lady Jane Franklin in Van Diemen’s Land. In 1855 he was elected to the Launceston seat of the Legislative Council, but soon retired to win the seat of Delby in the House of Assembly. After resigning from parliament in 1860 he was appointed deputy commissioner of crown lands for northern Tasmania and for the whole territory in 1867. Later still he held other positions including deputy registrar of the Court of Requests; births, deaths and marriages; and coroner in 1870. He retired from public service in 1876 and died at Newstead House, Launceston. Throughout most of his time in Van Diemen’s Land/Tasmania he followed his interests in botany and travelling, collecting plants for Professor W.J.Hooker of Glasgow University, and contributing to numerous botanical articles, journals and books (he was not a prolific author in his own right). Melbourne Cricket Club annual membership ticket for 1886-87 season named to Percy G.Jennings Esq, with original ribbon and in superb condition Percy Jennings was born in Collingwood in 1868 and died in Sandringham in 1935 aged 67 years. Little is known about his personal life except that he was estranged from his original wife Margaret who resided in Ballangeich near Warrnambool, remarried in 1896 and moved to Sandringham. On electoral rolls near his death his occupation was listed as an auditor However, he is known to have been an all-round sportsman, most notably as a player with the Melbourne Cricket Club from seasons 189192 to 1905-06. Records show that he played with the likes of Hugh Trumble and Warwick Armstrong in the MCC team and was involved in many representative games in Australia and New Zealand over this period (noted one 1891 match at the MCG against a touring Lord Sheffield’s XI that included the immortal W.G.Grace) Est. $750

1635

South St Kilda Football Club season ticket/pass for 1885 named to P.G.Jennings, card no.67 with original ribbon and full fixture for both the first and second teams, superb condition, the first we have seen for this club Although formal records of this time are patchy, it would appear that the roots of the South St Kilda Football Club date back to (or before) the establishment of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), that was founded in May 1877 to administer and regulate football in Melbourne. Prior to the formation of the VFA, local clubs would meet on an annual basis at central Melbourne venues such as Nissen’s Cafe and Oliver’s Cafe to arrange fixtures for the coming season. Although not one of the ‘elite’ foundation clubs of the VFA such as Carlton, Essendon, Geelong or Melbourne; the team was nevertheless reported in the Argus as being defeated by Brighton on 10th June 1878, with a further mention in the same paper in October 1880. The team’s name will be recorded on several other occasions until 1899. Following the formation of the Victorian Junior Football Association (VJFA, one level below the VFA) c.1882 the Argus reported South St Kilda Football Club as the winner in an affiliated match against Crimea in June 1883. The final ladder of the VJFA for season 1890 lists South St Kilda in tenth position in a competition comprising 28 clubs. Following a meeting of secretaries of ‘third rate’ football clubs on 5th March 1891 at Elliott’s Hotel, Bourke Street Melbourne, another new league was formed – the Metropolitan Junior Football Association (MJFA). This association was formally established in 1892, with the South St Kilda FC 2nd Twenty as one of the ten foundation clubs. This association was later to be known as the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Records of MJFA seasons 1892 to 1899 have been seen that indicate a successful club during this period – they were first in seasons 1893 to 1895 inclusive and 1897 – but it would appear that the team may have disbanded during the 1899 season. Of particular interest is that the Honorary Secretary of the South St Kilda Football Club as listed on the 1885 season pass is W.H.(T.) Davis – he is listed as a committee member on the 1889 season pass – was the founding president of the MJFA and held that position for four years before handing over to a Mr L.A.Adamson of Collegians who held the position for the next 37 years! This cataloguer wishes to thank a VAFA life member for his invaluable assistance in the compilation of this history Est. $400

Essendon (Association) Football Club 1913 enamel member fob badge by G.Bentley with legend Winners Association Cup 1911-12, some loss of enamel at base else aVF and scarce The Essendon (Association) Football Club was a club established in 1900 as Essendon Town when it joined the VFA, and disbanded in 1921. Among many ironies and coincidences, the “Dreadnoughts” also wore red and black and played at the traditional “Bombers” ground at Windy Hill (who at that time played their home games at East Melbourne, hence the reason for the establishment of Essendon Town FC). The Essendon Association or Essendon A team (as they were also known) competed in successive final series from 1908 to 1914 and won back-to-back premierships in 1911 and 1912, mimicking the more recognised team that won VFL premierships in the same years! The final irony saw the team forcibly merged with the North Melbourne Football Club in 1922. In the premiership year, Essendon Association’s full forward, Dave McNamara, became the first VFA footballer to kick over 100 goals in a season Est. $300

Collingwood Football Club enamel badge 23x36mm with legend “Collingwood Football Club Victoria Park” engraved on reverse “Hon. Life Member A.R. Smith 1904” exceedingly rare and a near unique opportunity for the serious collector Archie (Snapper) Smith was recruited from the Richmond VFA side and made his club debut in the inaugural VFL game in 1897. He went on to top the club’s goalkicking in each of his first four seasons; and in 1901 he kicked 30 goals, one behind his team mate Ted Rowell. His tally of 31 in 1898 was enough to win the VFL leading goalkicker’s medal. His overall record was 89 games from 1897 to 1902 for a total of 119 goals. To the best of our knowledge this is the earliest enamel life members badge that has surfaced for the Collingwood Football Club Est. $5,000
