HMAS Australia, WWI 9ct Sweethearts badge or fob neatly handcrafted in the shape of the Australian outline with a central component featuring HMAS Australia, a lovely little memento of the Australian Navy’s first flagship and very scarce The battle-cruiser HMAS Australia, superior to any other European warship then in the Pacific, made her first appearance in Sydney Harbour in 1913 at the head of the Australian Fleet (consisting of cruisers Melbourne, Sydney and Encounter, and destroyers Warrego, Parramatta and Yarra) amidst a wave of national pride and patriotic fervour. At the outbreak of war she provided a clear deterrent to enemy warships and kept our coastal shipping, trade and communication lines open while taking part in the operations to seize German colonies and destroy their communications in the Pacific. In 1915 she was ordered to Britain where she became flagship of the 2nd Battle Cruiser Squadron operating in the North Sea. In 1919 she returned to Australia and was decommissioned before being scuttled outside Sydney Harbour in 1924. The Prime Minister’s eulogy for the great ship declared “the passing of ‘Australia’ closes a glorious chapter in the history of the Australian Navy. We shall never forget that in the eventful days of 1914, when the fate of Civilisation hung in the balance, it was the presence of ‘Australia’, manned by Australian seamen, that saved our shores and our shipping from the fate which overtook less fortunate nations”.
