The Connections… The grandson of the founder of the Norman duchy, the Viking chieftain Rollo, Richard the Fearless was thrust into power upon the murder of his father in 942. Narrowly avoiding the same fate soon after, Richard consolidated his rule, and helped create an ancestry that would one day include some of the greatest names of English history. Through Emma, his daughter, who would ultimately marry not one, but TWO famous English rule rs – Aethelred the Unready and Cnu t the e Great – Richard was grandfather to the he English rulers Harthacnute and Edw ard rd the Confessor.
