A First-Timer’s Guide to NL

What would it be like to see Newfoundland and Labrador through virgin eyes? Would our rugged shores, sprawling forests, and breathtaking seascapes win over a pallet accustomed to city living? Throngs of tourists affirm that what we have is worth exploring, not just in one sitting.

But for a first-timer to the province affectionately known as The Rock, it is important to know exactly what you’re getting into before you get into it. Here are some handy tips for your maiden voyage to Newfoundland and Labrador:

Do Your Research

For frequent travellers, preparation is the key to a successful trip. That is doubly important in Newfoundland and Labrador where geography and unpredictable weather (more on both later) can impact any outing in good, bad and unexpected ways. As such, it is paramount to know what area of the province you’re visiting, know how long it will take to get there and take into account whether or not your activities are weather-dependent. Many NL first-timers make the mistake of overconfidence in terms of their attire or ability to pack as much as they can into as little time as possible. That may work for certain trips, but not for here.

Anita O'Keefe photo

Rent a Car

Renting a vehicle is crucial for successful navigation of NL. For some context, a trek from St. John’s to Corner Brook, two of the island’s most densely populated cities, takes nearly seven hours and covers a distance of over 685 km. The DRL bus, running from St. John’s to Port aux Basques, can take upwards of 10 hours. As such, booking your own means of transportation is practical if you plan to venture off the beaten path and cut valuable time off your commute. Likewise, it is important to note public transport is sparse in most of the province. Metro systems – like Metrobus in St. John’s and the surrounding area, and the Corner Brook Transit – operate in the two major centres, but most small towns offer little to no ride services. That includes taxis (available in some areas, but not all), and ride-sharing services like Uber. Relying solely on public transport is unadvised for a cross-province trip.

Prepare for All Seasons

In Newfoundland, we often joke that we can experience four seasons in a single day. That’s less hyperbolic than one might think. We’ve seen snow in summer and unseasonal warmth in winter. Pack sensibly with wild and unpredictable weather in mind. Waterproof footwear and a raincoat –we are deeply susceptible to the wet, wind and fog – are a must. A sweater, even in the summer months, is an advisable add-on. Nights can be cool for campers, so layers come in handy. Hikers should pack proper footwear for navigating wild terrain.

And even for the best-laid plans, travel delays can be expected. Whether you’re flying or taking one of our ferries, snow, wind and fog can impact travellers, particularly in the winter months. Travel delays are a part of the package, but when you’re dealing with an island in the Atlantic, there’s a slimmer margin for error.

Don’t

Overstuff Your Trip

If you only have a few days to explore, planning to take on Cape Spear on the Avalon while hiking Gros Morne on the other side of the island in quick succession is impractical. Decide what area of the province you’re taking on and set your itinerary accordingly. Distance between landmarks can be spread out and many of our outdoor or nature-based attractions are timeconsuming. And Labrador is an entirely different animal. It would take a threeand-a-half-hour flight or a full day of road travel to hit Labrador City from St. John’s, so breaking into The Big Land would almost surely require a longer or separate trip entirely. The bottom line is this: don’t bite off more of Newfoundland than you can chew.

Book Early

Canada’s hidden gem is not so hidden anymore. Thanks in no small part to an ace marketing campaign stretching back decades, coupled with a global reach through television and film in projects like Republic of Doyle, The Shipping News and Son of A Critch, the secret is out that Newfoundland and Labrador is a travellers treasure trove. As such, demand in peak tourist season – May to September – is high, and would-be island hoppers should book accommodations well in advance to ensure they’re not left on the outside looking in. Thankfully, our Explore Guide is chock-full of fantastic options in all regions. So what are you waiting for? Plan your maiden voyage to NL today!

Guiding Lights

Explore the iconic lighthouses of Newfoundland and Labrador, where history meets stunning coastal views.

Point Amour

Built to guide transatlantic steamship traffic down the Strait of Belle Isle, Point Amour Lighthouse was completed in 1857. At 33 meters, it’s the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada. In the days before roads linked the communities, the lighthouse was an important stopover for residents travelling up and down the coast on foot or by dogsled.

Cape Bonavista

The Bonavista lighthouse, completed in 1843, once guided mariners past the entrances to Bonavista and Trinity Bays as they headed for Labrador. Now a Provincial Historic Site, the lightkeepers’ quarters are restored to the 1870s, and guided tours are offered to visitors.

Mark Gray photo
Johnny Leto photo

Cape Spear

Cape Spear Lighthouse, built in 1835, is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and a National Historic Site of Canada. Just 20 minutes from St. John’s, it marks the most easterly point in North America and is an iconic symbol of the province’s maritime history.

Cape Race

Rose Blanche

Located on the rugged southwest coast, a region known for its many shipwrecks the Rose Blanche lighthouse is one of the last remaining granite lighthouses in the province. Constructed between 1871 and 1873 and rebuilt in the late 1990s by the Southwest Coast Development Association, the lighthouse keeper’s residence now serves as a community museum.

Ferryland

Built in 1870, Ferryland Lighthouse is about an hour south of St. John’s and a scenic 25-minute hike from the Colony of Avalon. It’s best known for Lighthouse Picnics, where visitors can enjoy delicious food with incredible ocean views – a must-try treat recognized as a Canadian Signature Experience.

Built in 1907, Cape Race Lighthouse sits at Newfoundland’s southeast tip, a key navigational point for ships crossing the Atlantic heading to the Cabot Strait shipping lane. Home to the province’s first wireless communication station, it played a role in the Titanic disaster, relaying distress signals and coordinating rescue efforts.

NL Whale Watching Guide

Newfoundland and Labrador is home to 19 different species of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Here’s how you can identify the whales you are most likely to encounter while at sea in this province.

BLUE WHALE

Balaenoptera musculus

This is the largest living animal, reaching lengths of up to 24.5 m. Its head is blue, while the rest of its body is usually mottled bluish-grey with a lighter underside. Blue whales are usually solitary. Commonly seen near pack ice on the west and southwest coasts, from a distance they can be identified by a straight, thin column of mist shot 9 m into the air.

FIN WHALE

Balaenoptera physalus

Measuring up to 20 m long, the fin is grey or brownish in colour. Its 912 m blow is tall and narrow. It often feeds alone or in small groups. Many local fishermen know the fin whale as the fin, fin back or finner.

MINKE WHALE

Balaenoptera acutorostrata

Minkes are our smallest (typically 8 m long) and most abundant whale. They have a dark grey to black back, white underside and pale streaks along the sides. The flippers are dark with a white band. The blow is low and often unnoticeable. Minkes are commonly called herring hounds.

HUMPBACK WHALE

Megaptera novaeangliae

Humpbacks, our most familiar species, are dark brownish-grey to black with a white underside. The flippers and under-tail are white marked with black. These whales are known for their aerial and surface displays and balloon-shaped blow.

ORCA

Orcinus orca

Also known as killer whales, Orcas are typically jet black with white markings and a greyish saddle patch behind the dorsal fin. They generally travel in packs and can be identified from a distance by the long dorsal fin, which can be up to 2 m in large males. The blow is low and bushy. Very acrobatic, they may be seen breaching clear out of the water.

PILOT WHALE

Globicephala melas

The long-finned pilot whales are relatively small, typically reaching lengths of 6.7 m (males can be larger). Known locally as a squid hound, the pilot whale is dark grey to jet black with a white, anchorshaped patch on the throat and a grey cape behind the heavy set dorsal fin.

Decades of logging around Roddickton, Newfoundland have created an unexpected result – the perfect moose habitat. Roddickton (the “Moose Capital of the World”) now has the largest density of moose in North America. A nuisance to some, moose (an introduced species) are now woven into our way of life and may even prove to be the key to our future. Come and see our moose and polar bear!

Be Moose Aware

Information

that may reduce your

risk of being in a moose-vehicle accident

There are about 125,000 moose living in Newfoundland and Labrador. The highest rates of moose accidents occur between June and August, so it’s important to be extra careful driving during these months.

Moose are especially good at camouflage. Their dark brown fur blends into the night, and when they are standing at road level their eyes are too high up to reflect light from car beams.

Moose love to feed on roadside vegetation, so they tend to hang out around there. Pay attention to both sides of the road. Moose are known to bolt quickly, so just because the animal is seen travelling parallel to the side of the road and at a distance, it could suddenly take off and cross in front of the vehicle.

The hours around dawn and dusk are when moose are most active, which is also when it’s harder for drivers’ eyesight to adjust to the changing light conditions.

Drive slower at night, when your field of vision is limited to your headlight distance. The faster the vehicle is going, the harder it is to come to a quick, short stop.

Keep an eye out for moose warning signs along roads. It means they’re frequently seen in the area and drivers should use extra caution.

While on the highway at night, drive with high beams on – except when approaching or passing other vehicles. (Always drive according to conditions; in the case of fog, high beams sometimes make visibility worse. Use fog lights if your vehicle has them, and reduce your speed.)

The vehicle’s windows and mirrors should be clean and in good condition. It’s important to be able to spot danger as soon as possible. Remove anything that can block the driver’s view of the road, such as clutter on the dashboard or items dangling from the rearview mirror.

While we are famous for our root cellars, we also have hiking trails, restaurants, a Discovery Geopark Site, historic sites, and Home from the Sea Sealers Memorial. What you can’t find locally, can most certainly be found in the neighbouring community of Bonavista, just an eight minute drive from here.

Wildlife Encounters What to Do

Whether camping, hiking or just walking on municipal trails, there’s a chance to encounter the natural inhabitants of those wild spaces – from foxes and coyotes, to moose and bears. While most nature-lovers dream of seeing creatures great and small up close, all animals should be regarded as wild and unpredictable and care should be taken if you cross paths with them. Regular Downhome contributor and wildlife technician Todd Hollett helped us write these general tips:

Report all sightings of animals showing signs of aggression to local forestry and wildlife officials (or local police).

If an animal approaches you showing signs of aggression or agitation, maintain eye contact, pick up small children or pets, move towards an area with increased activity, try to find objects to defend yourself or create a barrier, and try to provide the animal with an escape route.

Never feed wildlife (no matter how cute or harmless or vulnerable they seem).

Keep your property/campsite clean; ensure garbage/compost is secured with a lid; do not feed pets outside or store food outside.

Keep pets indoors, or under supervision when outside.
Have your pets spayed or neutered.
Never attempt to tame a wild animal.

timeless tips Highway Safety Tips

If you’re driving a rental vehicle, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with its features before driving away. Be sure you know how the headlights, windshield wipers and other safety equipment work, and preprogram the radio stations or load-up a playlist before you hit the road so you won’t be distracted trying to find tunes while driving.

Since April 2003, it has been illegal in Newfoundland and Labrador to talk or text on your cellphone while driving. If you must take or make a call, always use a hands-free bluetooth system.

There is a “Move Over” Law in effect in N.L., whereby drivers are required to slow down and pull into an outside lane, if safe and clear to do so, and create as much room as possible when passing any police officer, first responder or highway crew with flashing lights that is stopped in a lane or on the side of the road. This action creates a safe buffer for them to do their job.

If a stinging insect flies into your car, do not panic. Calmly pull off the road and deal with it.

Slow down in rainy conditions. Standing water, particularly in ruts in the pavement, can cause a vehicle to quickly lose traction. If your vehicle skids out of control, steer in the direction of the skid.

Turn on your headlights in fog. Use low beam; high beam makes visibility worse. Turning your headlights on also activates your tail lights, so that other drivers can see you up ahead.

If you have a tire blowout, keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and allow your vehicle to coast to a stop, then try to get your vehicle out of the traffic lane and onto the roadside. Use your emergency flashers.

Do not tailgate large trucks. General rule: if you can’t see the driver’s side mirror, that driver cannot see you. You are in the blind spot, which can be hazardous if you pull out to pass.

Everyone in the vehicle should be wearing a seatbelt, and children under 9 (and/or under 4' 9") should be in a booster seat or car seat. Children should never ride in the front seat.

Getting Your Boat Ready

Before you launch your boat for the first time this summer, read over this checklist.

❏ Clean the boat inside and out. Wash the exterior with proper fibreglass cleaner; regular household cleaners could scratch the surface. Finish with a coat of wax.

❏ Inspect the hull, seats and other vinyl/canvas surfaces for cracks, tears and mildew. Repair and clean surfaces with the proper cleaner.

❏ Replace the gas, change the engine oil and oil/fuel filter, and refill the cooling system.

❏ Examine the fuel line and hoses for cracks.

❏ Reinstall all batteries that you took out for the winter. Make sure they’re fully charged. If necessary, top up battery fluids with distilled water.

❏ Remove distributor cap, clean it and reinstall it properly.
