If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, did it truly fall at all?

To that end, within the cosmic questions of our time, does a Newfoundlander really exist without dying for something sweet? It’s baked into our provincial pie, this sweet tooth of ours. Jam jams, date squares, partridgeberry tarts and figgy duff, if it’s cake, cookie, custard or curd, we pile it high with a cup of tea and warm prayer of acceptance. But as in all things in life, there are doers and there are diners, and this writer could mangle a microwaved mug cake. Baking is much more than throwing flour, sugar and spice into a blender and looking to the lord for serenity. Baking is chemistry, love and timing. Skill, too, is paramount, but with practice and patience, anyone can learn the basics, though even the true pros can have dessert dilemmas. My good lady wife, saint that she is, once had a momentary lapse in sanity, chucking a nearly finished cake into the kitchen garbage when the icing decided to be uncooperative. It was my birthday, of all days, and she quickly pivoted to some amazing alternative, but in that moment, she saw Hulk levels of red. She’s the greatest cook I know, and her scones could end conflicts, but even she isn’t removed to tasty tragedies and kitchen nightmares. With learning from our failures in mind, Downhome’s sweet September issue features ready-made tips and tricks to become a better baker. Last summer, I brought a little Newfoundland to my summer home and PEI. This was a very fun project, and several people have come to see it.

I think that there would certainly be more opportunities for our folk to “report” on their provincial visits than the few that have the opportunity to visit far flung locations. I would certainly rather see photos of Newfoundland and Labrador than far flung countries which have no interest to me. Your magazine contains numerous games which highlight Newfoundland and Labrador locations. Why not the same by using local people and photos of areas that they have explored?

Hallstatt, Upper Austria “Hallstatt is one of the most magical places in the world,” writes submitter Maxine (Stone) Churchill, formerly of St. John’s, now living in Cambridge, ON. “It’s known for its stunning Alpine scenery and rich history.” Photo taken by George Churchill.

Hallstatt is the definition of storybook charm. Tucked between the crystalclear waters of Hallstätter See lake and the soaring Dachstein Alps, this tiny village of around 800 people feels straight out of a fairytale. With its pastel Baroque-style houses on stilts, narrow cobbled lanes, and iconic salt mines that date back 7,000 years, it’s no wonder Hallstatt was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.

Rust, Burgenland “In 2023, the Downhome magazine and I visited Vienna, where I rented a bike and joined my son Stephen and daughter-in-law Lynn on a two-day trip to the little town of Rust,” writes Donna Hewitt of St. Shott’s, NL. “We pedaled about 4 km off our route on a gravel road to visit some white, blue-eyed donkeys, once specially bred for nobility as status symbols. Stroking their white coats was supposed to bring happiness and peace.”

The charming herd of rare Austrian–Hungarian white donkeys at Neusiedler See–Seewinkel National Park in Burgenland, graze along the Sandeck area on the edge of Lake Neusiedl. These albino donkeys date back to the Baroque and Rococo eras when light-coloured animals were seen as “light-bringers” for aristocrats.

With only around 200–300 of them left worldwide, the park runs one of the largest breeding groups and uses the donkeys for conservation grazing.

Munich, Germany Decked out in lederhosen, Elliott Rowe of Labrador City raised a stein at Oktoberfest 2023 in Munich.

Oktoberfest is the world’s biggest beer festival mixed with a full-on funfair, bringing together Bavarian traditions and good times. Every year, it takes over the Theresienwiese fairgrounds in Munich, starting in mid-September and wrapping up on the first Sunday in October. The 190th anniversary in 2025 is set to be a major celebration, with special events – and, of course, loads of beer.

Respected Local Author Dies Legendary Author Earl Pilgrim has passed away at the age of 85. Pilgrim, a former boxing champion and wildlife officer, penned over 15 books, many of which celebrated Newfoundland and Labrador’s expansive history and culture.

Pilgrim’s niece, Karla Pilgrim, shared, “You’ll never be forgotten, Uncle Earl.

You’ve left such a legacy in your writing and storytelling.” Some of his major works included Curse of the Red Cross Ring, Will Anyone Search for Danny? and The Ghost of Ellen Dower.

Newfoundlander Lands Prominent NHL Role Newfoundlander Peter Hanlon has been announced as an Assistant General Manager of the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League. Hanlon, of St. John’s, will be involved in all areas of hockey operations, including player evaluation, player recruitment and strategic planning, according to the club. Hanlon formerly worked with the St. John’s Maple Leafs of the AHL, with international experience with Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics, World Championships, and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Six Heritage Properties Provided Grants Six local heritage properties across Newfoundland and Labrador have been awarded shares of $100,000 in grants towards restoration work, including two community museums, residences, and a historic church property. Drake House Museum in Arnold’s Cove, the Butler Property in Cupids and the Our Lady of Mercy Museum in Port au Port West, St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Trinity, the Devon House on Duckworth Street, St. John’s, and the Sexton/Wilansky House in Trinity are among the properties receiving funds from Heritage NL.

Grand Falls-Windsor Honours Gordon Pinsent The town of Grand Falls-Windsor has paid tribute to one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most legendary actors.

The late, great Gordon Pinsent has been honoured by his hometown with a bronze statue, which was commissioned by the town and created by local craftsman Morgan MacDonald. The unveiling took place at the annual Exploits Valley Salmon Festival, and included many notable guests, including the Lieutenant Governor and longtime friend and comedian Mark Critch. Pinsent, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 92, was known for a timeless career in film and television that spanned from the 1950s until the 2020s. www.downhomelife.com

Where does the saying “bold as brass” come from?

Brazen, not giving a hoot, cool as a cucumber – there are as many words and phrases to describe someone confident, calm and unbothered as there are colours in the rainbow. But perhaps one of the most colourful is “bold as brass.”

If you’ve ever been curious as to where this phrase comes from, Caroline Taggart provides some insight in her book As Right as Rain, which looks at the meaning and origins of several popular expressions.

According to legend, the roots of this phrase, which means “unshamefacedly bold” or not giving a damn what anyone thinks, may be connected to a cheeky politician across the pond, namely Brass Crosby, Lord Mayor of London in 1770, Taggart explains.

“Various printers had published accounts of parliamentary debates, which was at the time considered a breach of parliamentary privilege.

Crosby loudly and tenaciously stood up for freedom of speech, refusing to prosecute the printers concerned and saying that it was in the interest of the citizens whose rights he was sworn to protect that such matters be made 18

public. He went to jail (in the Tower of London, no less) as a result, but became very popular with - well, lots of people who weren’t MPs,” Taggart writes.

“It is as a direct result of this incident that Hansard, the verbatim account of Parliament’s proceedings, came into being. So Brass Crosby is one of those all-too-common historical figures: a great and important man of whom most of us have never heard.”

As to whether or not he can be directly linked to the famous phrase in question, that’s up for debate, Taggart says.

“The association between the shiny, hard and rather flashy metal and barefaced cheek dates back a lot further: ‘brazen’ in this sense is found in 1573 and ‘brassy’ in 1596. But as bold as brass came along a lot later,” she notes.

in print for the first time not 20 years after Crosby’s incident, in George Parker’s work Life’s Painter of Variegated Characters in Public and Private Life, which includes the line: “He died damn’d hard and as bold as brass. An expression commonly used among the vulgar after returning from

an execution.”

“It may well be that ‘the vulgar’ had latched on to Mr. Crosby’s first name and attached it to a common metaphor,” Taggart surmises.

“As with bats in the belfry, the alliteration would have helped the expression catch on.”

What’s the difference between flotsam and jetsam?

You may have heard people wax poetic about the “flotsam and jetsam” in their lives, or perhaps you’ve heard the term used to describe any number and type of odds and ends or bits and bobs which can’t be easily categorized.

The words are nautical in origin, used to describe two types of marine debris, and the difference between them is nothing to scoff at, explains the U.S.-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on its website.

“Flotsam is defined as debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck or accident. Jetsam describes debris that was deliberately thrown overboard by a crew of a ship in distress, most often to lighten the ship’s load,” the NOAA states.

It’s important to distinguish between the two under maritime law, the agency explains, noting that while “flotsam may be claimed by the original owner...jetsam may be claimed as property of whoever discovers it.”

“If the jetsam is valuable,” they add, “the discoverer may collect proceeds received through the sale of the salvaged objects.”

According to a post on the “Phrase

Finder” website by Gary Martin (the site’s creator), the two words have been spelled differently over the years.

And while they’re rarely seen apart these days, they “were frequently used independently in the 17th century.”

To easily recall which is which, Martin advises, remember that “Flotsam (or floatsome) are those items which are floating as a consequence of the action of the sea. Jetsam are those which have been jettisoned by a ship’s crew (although that may float too, of course).”

The word “lagan” (goods or wreckage lying on the seabed) used to tag along with flotsam and jetsam, he adds, and while it was still in use around the turn of the 17th century, “flotsam and jetsam formed an alliance of their own and allowed lagan to sink out of trace in the early 19th century.”

So the next time you’re beachcombing and spot something cool up for grabs, try to trace its origins before you become too attached.

Andrew Smith Band COUNTRY MUSIC has grown in popularity over the years, but for the

musicians in the Andrew Smith Band, the country/folk genre is a longtime love. But don’t let the name fool you – Andrew Smith Band is not a one-man show. This new St. John’s-based alternative country outfit features an all-star lineup of local musicians, each holding a deep passion for music in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Before we hit play, let’s get to know our players. Andrew gave us the lowdown on the talented folks who lent their talents to Spent, which was recorded by Liam Ryan of Barely There Records.

“Liam plays guitar in ASB and also with a bunch of NL bands, like the altrock band Swimming. Jacob Cherwick, the drummer of Swimming and The Kubasonics, mixed this album and did a wonderful job! Jacob’s dad, Brian Cherwick, played organ on the album. Braden Howse plays bass and also helped with a lot of the creative choices made in the songwriting process. Lucas Rose (The Old Contemporaries) provides a lot of the classic country twang with his pedal steel, and Maria Peddle came back from her European tour with The Burning Hell to shred the fiddle. Len O’Neill did 28

some piano recording, and Majestic Theatre sound engineer Nick Corcoran played some banjo and accordion,” Andrew shares, adding, “The best thing about this long list is that we are all part of an incredibly close and tight-knit friend group.

“Nobody is acting as a hired musician; we are all buddies who make music because we love to do so and couldn’t possibly exist on this island without doing it!”

That passion is evident on the record, released this past June.

The album opens with “Dollar Drink Days,” an upbeat rock song. Andrew poetically references the beloved annual McDonald’s promotion in the lyrics: “Now it’s summertime, and soft drinks are a dollar again, so go and get a mixture, mix it with some liquor and drink with all my very best friends.”

This track feels like a late-night drive on a cool summer evening.

The record’s second song, “Luna,” opens with twangy guitar and pedal steel. It’s powerful, commanding, and energetic.

With a catchy riff and jazzy percussion, “After the Show” commands your attention as Andrew’s vocals hook you in with a star-crossed lovers storyline. “You used to call me after his show. If I call you now, would you pick up the phone?” the lyrics ask.

Next is “Keen to Change.” It’s a little harder-rock than previous songs, with a heavy bassline chugging us along, but there’s still that signature altcountry twang.

Andrew Smith Band slows it down for “Crime,” a tender ballad with soft acoustic guitar and sweeping fiddle.

The vibe shifts on “Dead Hornets,” which transports the listener to another place and time – a Texan honky tonk dive bar in the late 1980s, perhaps. I found myself thinking about Andrew’s Dad’s CD collection, and wishing I could have a browse through www.downhomelife.com

that stack of albums.

Lucas Rose’s pedal steel guitar steals the spotlight, and the whole band basks together in the glow.

“Anytime Soon,” a short lo-fi piece, seems more like a half-forgotten demo, with the fuzzy acoustic guitar and distorted vocal effects offering a different brand of alt-country. Still, it doesn’t feel out of place on this polished record.

We’re back to a more classic rock and roll sound on “Always Been You,” with its playful lyrics and rich guitar. Think of 1990s radio rock – Third Eye Blind, Matchbox 20, Barenaked Ladies, etc.

– and you have the right idea.

“On My Own” has a punk rock edge, with its wailing guitar and vocal distortion.

The record finishes with “In Speed for Hire,” a tender selection to finish us off. Acoustic guitar and pedal steel are the main stars for the first 2m30s, with percussion, fiddle, and bass slowly building up to a smashing final verse. It’s the perfect closer, with an intensely heartfelt vocal performance from Andrew.

“It was May 24th, and we were out on the lawn. We were laughing and drinking, and listening to Ron,” Andrew sings in the closing lines.

Upon hearing that line, I realize that I’ve reviewed two new records in a row that give a respectful nod to NL’s own Ron Hynes in their lyrics.

Ron has cemented his place as a local legend, but it’s clear there’s a lot of young talent out there who could also reach such great heights. I’m excited to watch those paths unfold, but mostly, I can’t wait to listen.

Q&A with the Artist Wendy Rose: Let’s introduce you to the Downhome readers: Who knit ya, where’s “home,” and how/when did you begin playing music?

Andrew Smith: Ah, my favourite ques-

tion! My father was from Mount Pearl, and my mother is from Lewisporte.

They both met as teachers in Bonavista. I lived the first 18 years of my life in that beautiful community. I got my first real guitar the summer after 4th grade. I started learning from watching my next door neighbour Gord, a retired teacher who plays traditional Newfoundland music all over the peninsula, as well as my dad, and the other folks who would gather around our street playing music. I remember watching them play “Ol Cane” by Simani and telling myself I wanted to write songs as soon as I could play a handful of chords on my guitar.

I’ve lived in St. John’s for almost 10 years now, but still frequently visit and play music back home. I’ve got a deep love for the Bonavista Peninsula and the people who live there. I think I’ll always carry that with me.

WR: What was your introduction to the folk/country genre, and who are some of your biggest musical influences?

Have your “heroes always been cowboys,” as Willie Nelson sings?

AS: Primarily, yes! Growing up, as we

travelled, we’d depend on Dad’s CD collection to get us through the car ride. I was introduced to the outlaws – Waylon, Willie, and Merle, as well as other more modern country acts like Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, and The Dixie Chicks. WR: Tell us a little about the creative process of making this 10-song record.

AS: This album took a long time to

make – hence the name Spent. I think it’s important to feel proud and ready to release something, so I took my time with every detail of this record.

These tracks were written nearly 3.5 years ago, and by the time I secured the funding to record (thank you, ArtsNL!), we’d taken the songs down nearly every avenue they could’ve gone down. We play a lot of live shows at St. John’s venues like The Ship, the Rockhouse, and the Peter Easton, so we wanted this album to sound like if you were at one of these pub shows.

From the early feedback I’ve gotten, I think we succeeded in this goal!

Prine’s “Sweet Revenge”, I am transported back to being 10 years old and leaving the driveway of my house to get on the road.

As I got older, I heard more underground country and folk artists. I got a copy of Lucinda Williams’ Car Wheels on a Gravel Road when I was in my last year of high school, and that rocked my world. I’ve never claimed to be an expert shooter or big game hunter, and I have no doubt there’s still plenty I could learn from others, both young and old alike. I’m not overly familiar with the intricacies of ballistics, nor am I one of those who can paunch and skin an animal with a pocket knife in 45 minutes.

But if there’s one thing of which I am certain – after learning from my own mistake almost four decades ago, as well as witnessing that of others in more recent years – it’s that big game hunters should fire however many rounds it takes to ensure the gun is “on” before heading off on any adventure.

Five moose in distance: Gord spotted these animals from 600-700 metres during one of his own hunts, but couldn’t get close enough where he felt comfortable taking a shot.

Of course, when we say the rifle is “on” or “off,” we’re actually talking about the scope. When a gun’s scope is “off” or not accurate, it means the point of aim, where the scope’s reticle is aimed, does not match the point of impact, where the bullet actually hits the target. This can be due to various factors affecting the scope itself, the shooter or the rifle.

My faux pas occurred during the third moose hunt of my career. Having dropped a young bull in its tracks three years earlier, I felt no urgency to sight in the 30-06 for my next hunt because the gun was locked in a case and not moved the whole time.

No worries, right?

After firing three shots at a twoyear-old cow from 100-120 metres and failing to tear off enough fur to tie a Blue Charm, however, I began questioning my ability and wondered if I had been nervous and shaking slightly when I squeezed the trigger.

Turned out, I wasn’t. When I began to think back on the last time I fired the rifle, I remembered resting the gun vertically against a tree while we www.downhomelife.com

started the paunching process, then heard it fall, with the scope striking a rock. I never thought much of it at the time, nor was I concerned when I put it in a soft case and tossed it in the back of my pickup for the bumpy ride back to camp.

Even though I’ve been much more careful about my rifle since then, I continue to take it to an approved gravel pit before each new hunt and fire enough shots until I’m satisfied “she’s dead on.”

And yes, I did get my animal a few days later that year after properly sighting in the scope.

When a former soccer teammate from way back asked if I could help him get his animal five years ago “in exchange for a quarter of moose,” I immediately accepted the invitation, though I told him “just the tongue and a few roasts” would be payment enough.

When we touched base a month or so before the season to discuss accommodations and meals, I reminded Rick to take his .308 to the rod and gun club or a gravel pit to make sure she was on.

Two weeks later, when I checked to see if he had done it or if he wanted me to help, he told me not to worry and that he’d take care of it “this coming weekend.”

It was four days into the season before our schedules finally aligned, and we were on our way to Black River, Moose Management Area (MMA) 28.

I’d hunted there only twice before, and it would be Rick’s first time, but we were confident nonetheless that we’d have his animal down within a few days.

Once straightened away at his coworker’s cabin, we jumped aboard Rick’s truck, with me behind the wheel, and headed as far inland as the old woods roads led us before dark.

With no quads, our transportation would consist of about 60 percent driving and 40 percent walking.

I was slowly rounding a turn about an hour before sunset when Rick suddenly yelled, “Stop, Stop... is that moose way over there on the marsh?”

I grabbed the Vortex binoculars from the dash, jumped out of the truck and rested my elbows on the bonnet for a steady view.

“Yessir,” I said. “Bull and a cow. A good 500 metres away. Hop back in and we’ll drive in a bit further; see if the road leads behind them.”

It did, and three or four minutes of slowly pushing through the woods brought us to the edge of the treeline, with the animals now at 160-180 metres.

One shot is all it took for Sean Kearsey to drop this bull in 2013.

Rick chambered a round, rested his gun across a tree branch and took aim for the 10-point bull.

“Boom!”

He struck bog underneath the animal’s midsection.

Another shot.

Same result.

“Did you sight ‘er in after?” I asked.

“No, b’y. Forgot all about it.”

“Oh fer ...”

Long story short, even though we sighted ‘er in the next morning, Rick never had an opportunity at another animal during the remaining four days of our hunt. It would be five days into his second trip with his brother-in-law that he finally managed to harvest a yearling.

Lesson learned.

Every year, Downhome celebrates the pets who’ve stolen

your hearts – and maybe a few socks along the way. For our annual Pet of the Year contest, you sent in stories of friendship, courage and unconditional love. From brave rescues to loyal sidekicks, your submissions were filled with touching, funny and downright adorable stories that prove just how much our animal companions mean to us. We’ve highlighted several honourable mentions that’ll tug at your heartstrings and tickle your funny bone. But first, meet the four-legged friend who took top honours this year: the therapy horse whose gentle spirit and quiet strength have helped bring healing and joy to many lives. Here’s the story of Willow and her human, Michelle Tarrant.

Willow Willow is a 21-year-old Palomino Quarter horse who spent most of her life as a school horse helping people achieve horsemanship and rider levels. She came into my life when I was in Truro, Nova Scotia for college in 2007. She was four years old at that time. She carried me through a myriad of challenges that come with being in a new place with no connections.

School weighed heavy on me but she carried me and my baggage which offered relief and stability in unknown territory. We quickly bonded and I became involved in her daily caretaking. I spent most of my mornings greeted with a nicker from sweet Willow and every evening ended with the soothing sounds of munching hay.

I eventually returned to Newfoundland. Having to leave Willow behind was a difficult but necessary decision. I kept tabs on where she was and what she was doing, hoping one day I’d get to see her again. After a few years of tracking her, I reached out to her caretaker and inquired about purchasing her. A few short years later one of my biggest dreams came true! I was buying a horse, and not just any horse, my dream horse!

I’ve proudly loved and owned Willow for ten years now. She has taught me so many valuable life lessons and to cherish living in the moment.

She currently resides at Rainbow Riders in Newfoundland as an Equine Assisted Therapy horse. She assists with psychotherapy focusing on mental health and communication, therapeutic riding which allows riders to use her movement to engage sensory motor skills, and hippotherapy which encompasses physical movement and rehabilitation exercises. She has touched many people and brought much healing and joy to many lives.

Little did I know that meeting this special golden mare would not only nourish my life, but help a number of individuals develop social, emotional and physical skills. She is not just a horse. She’s a healer, a teacher and a cherished friend. www.downhomelife.com

After much thought I’ve decided to share my story of my dog, Pete.

It started in 2010. I had a brother who had what I call, “a hospital career.” Diagnosed with Hemophilia at six years old; sent to Sick Kids in Toronto, they removed his spleen and he was given blood transfusions that were tainted! From the tainted blood he contracted Hep C, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and colon cancer, which finally took his life at age 48. He lived with my mom all his life because he was always sick.

Some time passed before I decided to get my mom a pet for her loneliness of living on her own. I’ve had dogs all my life, but when Pete entered our lives as a pup, little did I know what was to come. Pete is a purebred Australian Shepherd, and I didn’t realize how active they are, but found out real quick. I soon realized that Pete was too much for my frail mom to handle, so I ended up taking him. I’ve had him for 12 years now and in that time I don’t know how I got through it without Pete. He is the 40

He’s been by my side constantly and truly is my best friend in every way. I can’t say enough about how important he’s been for my mental well-being. one constant thing in my life that has brought me comfort when days did not go so well. About one and a half years ago, Pete was let out at night to do his duty and, like a rocket, he was off running after picking up the scent of a rabbit. I heard a yelp and then Pete came back favouring his rear leg. I took him to the vet and was given the bad news: he had torn his ACL and would need surgery. A date for surgery was set and the vet said this was very common for active dogs that love to run, and also said that the other leg may go because of putting pressure trying to compensate for the injured one. About a week later, the same thing happened, but Pete did not come back. Off I went looking for him in the dark and found him at the back of the house in the deep snow not moving. I picked him up and brought him in the house and feared the worst. Yes, his other leg was injured and he could not walk.

Next day back at the vet and given the same news as before. He would need surgery on both legs at the same time and the cost would be $14,000.

I was shocked and upset for Pete. But no matter the cost, I was not putting him down. After surgery, it would be a six-month recovery for him. I was dealing with severe back pain from sciatica and had to carry Pete in and out of the house to do his duty anywhere from three to five times a day in the cold ‘till he could use his legs again.

That was 1.5 years ago. He’s a completely changed dog, from loving to run and chase squirrels, shredding basketballs and anything that needed shredding, etc., to learning to walk a different way. It slowed him down big time. He’s still with me, by my side, but doesn’t do a lot but sleep.

I realize now that I’m watching him live his life on the down side, the same way I watched my brother Peter go. And I know when Pete does go to Doggy Heaven, the tears will flow for a long time, for a best friend that did so much for me in good and troubling times.

This past year has been the hardest chapter of my life – one filled with loss and loneliness.

But in the darkest moments, when the world felt empty and hopeless, my dogs became my lifeline. When I couldn’t find the strength to get out of bed, they nudged me gently. When I sat in silence, overwhelmed by sadness, they curled up beside me, their quiet presence saying, “You’re not alone.” Their wagging tails, goofy grins, and endless affection slowly pulled me out of the pit I thought I’d never escape. They reminded me how to love, how to hope, and most importantly, how to keep going. My dogs saved my life, not with grand gestures, but with unconditional love, patience, and presence.

Blaze

The summer of 2024, our whole town was evacuated to Goose Bay due to the forest fire that was burning. I had, at the time, a senior dog named Dakota and a senior cat, Twilight. We were evacuated for nine days. The day before we were allowed to return home, a man posted an ad asking if anyone wanted some puppy love. On arrival, there was my dream puppy: part German Shepherd, part Labrador. It was love at first sight. We had to make arrangements to get her back to Labrador City with us.

I’m saying goodbye now to my senior dog.

Blaze has been my angel and helped me cope with the loss of my best friend while gaining more space in my heart for a new one.

Darwin “Trouble” Richards is the best dog in the world, and, occasionally the worst. Examples of his crimes include his penchant for eating socks and running away in the woods to swim through muddy puddles because he didn’t like the plum scented shampoo I washed him with. We often refer to him as Bad Boots. However, he is also best friend to the kids, has never met a stranger, is kind to other dogs, a constant companion, and the most well-tempered dog I know. Darwin weathered COVID with us and was honestly the best stress buster and unofficial emotional support dog. He is hilarious and everyone who meets him falls in love with him.

Phoenix came to me as a happy accident in July of 2024. I never thought I would own a peacock! I was given two eggs and decided on a whim to pop them into the incubator. Phoenix decided to come a few days early and hatched on my birthday. She’s the best birthday present I have ever received. I decided to hand raise her and we formed a special bond. I can’t imagine life without her! She hangs out on the couch with me every night and cuddles in behind me for hours and hours. When she loses sight of me, she calls out, and she gets mad if I don’t come say good morning first thing when I get up every day. Meet Bandit, our six-year-old beagle with a heart as big as his floppy ears. He lives with epilepsy, but that doesn’t define him. Through every challenge, he moves through life with joy and a tail that never stops wagging. Bandit is the definition of resilience, teaching us to stay present and find happiness, even in tough moments.

He’s a gentle, friendly soul – always sweet with his feline brother and sister, and full of playful energy with his beagle siblings. This is the story of Scout, a beautiful Belgian Malinois dog, seemingly abandoned on a northern Alberta highway in March of 2022. No one knows how Scout’s story began, but she was first spotted at a work site about 100km south of Fort McMurray on Highway 63. There are no communities in the area, so she was really in the middle of nowhere with nowhere for her to go. Between the big rigs flying by, the wildlife and temperatures dropping to -25C at times, there’s no doubt it was an extremely dangerous place for her to be. The only upside, it seemed, was that her plight was now clearly visible, and thanks to social media, the mission to rescue Scout began.

My brother Brian and his partner Charlene were among those who stopped and tried to lure her in to their vehicle, but their efforts were in vain as she was utterly terrified of everyone. Thanks to regular

updates on Facebook, a lady named Amanda became aware of Scout’s dilemma and made several attempts to rescue her, but she too was unsuccessful.

“I was heartbroken when I saw her the first time,” said Amanda. “After a few hours with her, I knew I had to get her, no matter what. I lay on the frozen ground, tossing treats until she ate from my hand. I was hopeful I could just slip a lead on her, but she was way too scared and jumped with every movement.”

The next morning, Amanda returned, parking on the Amanda with Scout in a side of the highway and setting up camp. She then set a foster home trap with food and waited. Time was running out; Scout was getting very skinny and it was too cold and dangerous for her to be out there. After 33 long hours, sleeping on the side of that dark, cold highway with her dog as her only companion and fighting off foxes for the food that was meant to lure Scout, Amanda’s patience paid off. Scout finally gave in and took the bait.

On March 21st, the post everyone was waiting for appeared. There was a picture of Scout in the trap with just two words posted above…GOT HER! From there, Scout was eventually settled into a foster home, where Brian and Charlene went to see her again. After locking eyes with her on the highway and again in her foster home, they felt they could give her the life she so deserved, so on May 7th, Scout was officially adopted. She now gets lots of walks and treats, sleeps on the bed or the couch (or wherever she darn well pleases), and is dearly loved. Thanks to social media and countless, caring people, Scout was rescued and is now living her very best life in her forever home.

Born in Harbour Breton, Heather’s passion in the kitchen began at a young age, she tells Downhome.

“As a child, I wanted to help my mom in the kitchen way before I was old enough. I just always had a passion for it,” she shares, adding that her love for cooking and baking is equal, though she has a notorious sweet tooth.

An admittedly shy and private person, Heather took the plunge into the world of content creation postCOVID. A longtime healthcare professional with a love of food, she began exploring handy how-to guides and tips in the kitchen. ternet celebrity. “I was late to the party with the TikTok app. It was late 2021.

I think people were using it early COVID days. I put up a video of clips of food with some music, and it generated a lot of interest. At that time, I believe there were like 600 views, and now that’s kind of laughable. There were a lot of comments and there was a lot of interest, and the questions and the comments from that video made me want to do another video and try and answer those questions. It just kind of started from there. There was never a conscious decision.”

Heather admits that the sudden uptake in followers caught her off guard.

“A million percent, it surprised me.

from TikTok, but I was posting videos on Facebook, and nothing was happening. Nothing was happening, and all of a sudden, everything just blew up. It was like 10,000 followers a day, 100,000 a week. It was aggressive. It just moved really, really fast. And it just hasn’t slowed down since.”

Heather incorporated practical, money-saving knowledge in an entertaining and insightful series of videos, tapping into a niche that has continued to balloon these past four years.

“When the powdered milk series started, I want to say it was in the early days of the really big inflation when we started seeing the really big food price hikes. The desire and the interest in it were huge. So that’s when my account really started to grow,” Heather recalls. “I tried to focus on things that could save people money and things that were practical.”

Heather has parlayed her internet fame into the literary world, inking a deal with local publishing company Flanker Press to release her first cookbook. Mrs. Brown’s Kitchen: Measure With Your Heart launches this September and will feature Heather’s homegrown recipes in her authentic, unique voice.

“Early on, when things started to get successful, people were really, really aggressively asking for it (a cookbook). And it stressed me out because I had no idea how to do it,” Heather admits, adding that the deal with Flanker came together at the perfect time. “It was a bit of a learning curve. So I bought the camera. I have a friend who’s a professional photographer. She told me what to buy. I never really did learn how to use it, but the pictures came out great. I bought the camera, and when I started cooking, I had to cook everything to get the picture. So when I stared at it, I was like, okay, I’m going to have to measure every ingredient and write it down. In the beginning, it was very different for me, like using the measuring spoons and cups when I’m cooking, but it got to be second nature. And every time I add an ingredient, I mark it down. In the beginning, it was a bit of an adjustment, but I got into it.”

With a loyal, growing nation of followers and a new cookbook set to share her brand with a whole new audience, Heather remains steadfastly authentic to who she is. It was, after all, that truth, relatability and downto-earth nature that endeared her to her followers in the first place.

to,” Heather shares. “I would never even imagine trying to be something I’m not. And I don’t know. I am beyond genuine. What you see is what you get. And I don’t think of myself as an influencer or someone with a lot of followers. I don’t think of it as a big deal because to me it’s really not.

“I’m sharing these cooking and baking videos, and people enjoy them, and I enjoy bringing it to people, and I enjoy when people come back and say they make these recipes or they enjoy this. It’s just part of who I am now, and although I have adjusted to a lot of things, I certainly haven’t changed over the course of this journey. I still am who I am.”

I heard the sirens

screaming up the Trans Canada Highway and saw the flashing lights approaching us. My blind date and I were sitting in my car without much to say to each other. We were supposed to be on our way to my coworker’s wedding reception at Club Commodore in Torbay, but instead, we were at the side of the road, waiting for my mother to rescue me from drowning in embarrassment. Right before the wedding mass, the zipper down my long dress broke, and the safety pins my date bought me from the drugstore would not last all night. My mom came from our home in Holyrood with a different dress for me, and we met her halfway to save time. Luckily, my parents ran the Holyrood ambulance service.

We weren’t long waiting when mom pulled up, the ambulance on full blast, my dress in the back on a stretcher. My companion and I made it back to the wedding in time for the dinner, but there was no second date.

Before they got into the ambulance business, my family were already the ones folks called when they needed help with an emergency. My paternal grandfather, Michael C. Dunphy, was the local undertaker in Holyrood before my dad took over. Originally, my grandfather was a blacksmith and carpenter, and he started making coffins for people who asked. Soon, he was recognized by his stately top hat and regal posture as he travelled by horse and sleigh to communities in the head of the bay. The bells of his horses let everyone know he was on his way to bury someone.

Dad (William J. Dunphy) was born in 1921 and grew up in Holyrood alongside his many enterprising siblings.

Dad’s brother Jack had one of the first general stores in Holyrood, selling everything from a needle to an anchor.

Edmund married and relocated to Corner Brook. His sister Mary was a teacher and taught in Montreal.

Dad’s brother Mike started the Velvet Horn club and restaurant, and the Irving Service Station. And, just like my grandfather, my dad became a well-respected carpenter. Once he was old enough, he helped his father make caskets in the workshop, and they both prepared people’s loved ones in their homes and buried them in local cemeteries. My mother, Marjorie (or Dolly as she was called by her siblings), was born in 1922, the first of ten siblings from the first marriage. Many of Mom’s brothers stayed in Bay Bulls to fish as their father did.

ried on August 15, 1952, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Bay Bulls. They built their home in Holyrood, which remains attached to Dunphy’s Funeral Home. Soon came their first child, Kenneth, in 1954, and the next year, I was born. Kenneth took his role as big brother seriously and protected and cared for me from day one. In many of the pictures of us as kids, he either held my hand or had his arm around my shoulder.

When I was four, my brother Billy was born. Kenneth and I adored him and protected him the best we could.

He was a holy terror always, doing impish things like a young boy would do. Once, he took a $100 bill from my mother’s drawer and went to the Velvet Horn to buy an ice cream. He wasn’t even tall enough to see over the counter. Luckily, someone at the Horn recognized him. He got his ice cream, and Mom got her $100 bill back.

Being the undertaker’s daughter didn’t make me much different from the other kids I grew up with. Across the road from us lived one set of cousins, and more of our cousins lived next door to us. We all played together: board games, or “house,” “store,” or we would float many a boat that dad carved out of wood in his workshop down the river by our property. We swam in the Mahers River or Donny Brook, off the Trans Canada, or from the Fireman’s Bridge, or at Main Beach in the salt water.

Not far down the road from us were other kids with whom we played and went to school. These were the Penneys, the Doheys, the Maloneys, and the Fureys. After school, we all played together from one yard to the next.

The Penney home was the hub for all the kids in the neighbourhood – our playground from the time we were small, and the hangout spot once we were teenagers.

September began with new or used books, some wrapped with brown paper, old wallpaper or oil cloth, or passed down from neighbouring kids as was the custom. We walked to and from elementary school each day, most times holding the hand of our teacher, Miss Angela Maloney. After school, we came home to the smell of freshly baked bread, chocolate chip cookies, gingerbread or whatever mom made. I can still smell those aromas today.

Most evenings were spent enjoying deliciously cooked meals together and praying the rosary. If anyone popped by for a visit, Dad or Mom would point down at the floor 58

to say (without interrupting their prayer) that the guest should kneel and pray (and they better not sit back on their bums!) Saturday night was for baths and polishing our shoes for Sunday Mass. Both my brothers were altar boys.

Christmas time was always special for our family. My brothers and I would go into the woods with Dad to cut the Christmas tree, which was decorated on Christmas Eve. Every year we got new pyjamas and a snack of cookies and milk.

Santa filled our stockings with grapes and an orange, fresh fruit that we only got once a year, and placed presents for us under the tree. We each got one new toy and later in the day, a feast of turkey dinner. The smell of the turkey is still fresh in my mind.

Newfoundland and Labrador has no shortage of avifauna.

We host an abundance of shorebirds, songbirds, gamebirds, seabirds and, of course, birds of prey. They streak through the trees in pursuit of sparrows, dive into bays, arising with slippery fish squirming in powerful talons and shriek haunting calls in the darkness. In the past, they have been persecuted for stealing poultry, reducing game species and attacking pets, but they play an important role in our ecosystem.

They are the raptors.

OSPREY Locally known as the fish hawk, the osprey – Pandion haliaetus – is unique for its ability to dive underwater with outstretched feet to catch live fish. The outer toe is reversible, which allows them to grasp fish with two toes in front and two toes behind. The soles of the feet have barbed pads to keep the slippery prey from escaping. They reduce drag by positioning the prey headfirst while flying. They spend about 12 minutes hunting before catching a fish, and have a dive success rate of 70%.

Ospreys gravitate towards shallow bays, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, lagoons, swamps and marshes, only hunting deeper waters when fish school near the surface. Most North American breeders overwinter in Central and South America. Many ospreys log over 257,000 km over their 15 to 20-year lifespan.

The diet is almost exclusively fish, with 80 freshwater and marine species accounting for 99%. Rarely, they’ll consume fish carcasses, birds, snakes, voles, squirrels, muskrats, frogs, toads and salamanders.

These large raptors have a brown back and wings with white underparts. The head is white with a broad brown line through the eye. The beak is strongly hooked and black.

Ospreys do well around humans, often building nests on artificial structures like telephone poles, chan1-888-588-6353

nel markers, duck blinds and nesting platforms. However, nests are usually built on snags, treetops, among branches or on cliffs.

The male will usually arrive first and begin preparing the nest, with construction material including sticks, and lining it with with bark, sod, grasses, vines, algae, flotsam and jetsam.

Osprey lay between one to four cream to pinkish-cinnamon eggs spotted with reddish-brown. The eggs do not hatch all at the same time. The first chick hatches five days before the last. The older hatchling dominates its siblings, monopolizing the food delivered by the parents.

If the food is abundant, the chicks will share the meal, but in times of scarcity, the youngest chicks may starve.

NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL At only 17 to 22 cm long, with a 42 to 56 cm wingspan and weighing 54 to 151 grams, the saw-whet owl – Aegolius acadicus – is minuscule in the owl world, but it is bursting with attitude. A fierce little predator with a cat-like face, it has an oversized head and piercing, bright yellow eyes. The adults are mottled brown, streaked with white, pale facial disks and a white “V” marking between the eyes. Juveniles are unspotted brown on the back with a cinnamon belly and have the same white “V” as mom and dad. The call is a high-pitched too-too-too.

One of the most common owls in North America, saw-whets inhabit a variety of forest types with dense vegetation. However, they often prefer mature forests with an open understory and riverside habitat nearby. During the day, the preferred roosting site is in evergreen trees near the trunk.

Breeding occurs across Southern Canada and the Northern and Western U.S., extending through Central Mexico in a range of wooded habitats including coniferous swamps, disturbed woods, riverside stands and shrub steppe. Preferred nesting sites are previously excavated woodpecker holes in dead trees.

They will also take advantage of nest boxes placed in meadows, scrub and poplar plantations. The eggs are

laid on debris in the cavity, usually two to 13 metres off the ground.

Forming monogamous pairs, the female will lay four to seven smooth, white eggs, and do all the incubation and brooding, while the males hunt and provide food to the female and young. Unlike other birds of prey, where the older chicks often dominate or kill younger siblings, the older young often assist in feeding the younger.

They are highly nocturnal, preying on mice – especially deer mice – often eating them in pieces over the course of two meals. They will also predate a variety of creatures including shrews, mice, bats, small birds, frogs, bugs, and intertidal invertebrates such as amphipods and isopods.

BALD EAGLE Holding the distinction of being the only eagle found exclusively in North America, bald eagles – Haliaeetus leucocephalus – are common in Newfoundland and Labrador. They inhabit areas around large lakes, rivers, marshes, coastal areas and nearby open country. They range throughout most of Canada, the United States and Northern Mexico.

Despite their name, they are not bald. The name is derived from an older meaning of the word for “white headed”. Gaining maturity in four to five years, the unmistakable adults are mostly brown with white head and tail feathers. The large hooked beak, feet and eyes are bright yellow.

The toes have short, black, powerful talons, with the back talon being highly developed to pierce vital areas of prey while being immobilized by the front. Immature birds are dark brown and appear messy due to white streaking. The length of the body is 70 to 102 cm, with a typical wingspan of 1.8 to 2.3 m, while typically weighing 3 to 6.3 kg. They are sexually dimorphic, females are 25% larger. The call includes chirps, whistles, kleek, kik,ik,ik,ik.

Bald eagles are opportunistic feeders, preying on a wide variety of creatures including seabirds, hares, muskrats, foxes, skunks, cats, caribou calves, carrion, and fish. They have specially adapted structures on their toes called spicules that enable them to grasp slippery fish. They have also been known to aggressively steal food from coyotes, foxes, otters

and other birds.

During the winter, they inhabit areas of open habitat with an abundance of prey and will often congregate at landfill sites.

Bald eagles mate for life, constructing a large nest in old-growth and mature trees from six to 40 m above ground and usually within 200 m of open water. The largest ever discovered nest was in Florida in 1963, measuring 2.9 m wide and 6.1 m deep. Nests are reused for about five years. While nesting, they are usually quite sensitive to human disturbance, so select areas with minimal activity.

Nesting usually begins in mid-February, with incubation beginning in mid-March, and hatching in midApril or May. The young are ready to fledge by late June to July. The largest nestling usually eats first and may kill the smaller siblings. They grow rapidly, gaining from 4000 to 5100 g in just two months.

There are two subspecies of bald eagle: H.l.leucocephalus found in the southern U.S. and the larger H.l.washingtoniensis inhabiting the Northern U.S., Canada and Alaska.

this one past the overpass has reached its end, but it’s going out with some unforgettable views and memorable experiences. As we leave Elliston and turn down Route 230, prepare to see what some argue is the most scenic side of the Peninsula.

If hiking is your passion, there are few better places than the stops along the 230. First reached is Look Out Trail, where a combination of boardwalk and natural terrain leads you to Look Out Pond, a beach of flat rock carved from glaciers 18,000 years ago. The park features a freshwater pond for swimming, day use facilities, and a play area for children.

A quick five-minute drive down the road and you reach Port Union, a uniquely historic community that overlooks both Trinity Bay and Catalina Harbour. Port Union’s fame is being the only union-built town in North America.

Founded in 1916 by William Coaker, it was the base for the Fishermen’s Protective Union and the Fishermen’s Advocate journal, and was designated a national historic site in 1999.

Buildings and streets are laid out conscientiously. Tidy red duplexes line the main road that leads to the Factory, the lifeblood of the town.

The way of life gained through trade, woodworking, and the newspaper press can be explored in full detail in the Port Union Historical Museum.

Other exhibits include Coaker’s bungalow and the Shipbuilder’s Park.

Housed in one of the old union buildings is Union House Arts, a thriving collaborative space home to an art gallery, community kitchen, 68

workshop space, artist accommodations, and studios, and host to numerous annual community-based events.

This year, it will be particularly abuzz as one of the Bonavista Biennale’s (Aug 16-Sept 14) site installations. The Biennale is in its fifth iteration as a peninsula-wide contemporary art exhibition.

A 20 minute drive back on the 230 and you arrive at the tourist favourite, Champney’s West. One of the main features of this community is its aquarium, which showcases species native to this region of the Atlantic Ocean; new this year is a display of corals and sponges. The aquarium offers touch and viewing tanks, and other marine displays.

Staff are on hand to discuss ocean life sustainability, the effects of climate change, and interconnectivity between species.

This part of Champney’s West is part of the Fox Island Trail, a coastal loop of 5.5 kilometres rated easy to moderate.

Back on the road and just over the hill is Two Whales Coffee Shop in Port Rexton. This cooperative-owned café serves organic, garden-grown lunches and baked goods, with gluten-free and vegetarian options. I must profess a partiality to this place and the “Five Gals” who own and operate it.

Stop in for a bite to eat and a truly delicious coffee inside or on their pet-friendly grounds and patio. (Ask for the cheese tax for your fur baby!)

If the café isn’t quite your cup of

tea, across the road is the Port Rexton Brewing Co. Featuring unique brews with funky names such as “Blue Steel” and “Sweater Weather”, this bustling spot has a large, sunny beer garden and plenty of indoor seating. Check out their website to see what fun entertainment is on tap each evening. If you’re hungry, delicious gourmet grilled cheeses and fresh-cut fries served up by the friendly staff of Oh My Cheeses are ready to fill you up.

Within walking distance of the Brewery is the world-famous Skerwink Trail. Selected as one of the top 35 trails in North America and Europe by Travel and Leisure Magazine, this 5.3-kilometre loop is a

Rated moderate to difficult, the climb features unparalleled coastal views, twisting plank steps amongst old-growth trees festooned with old man’s beard, and lookout spots that will take your breath away.

Early morning hikes are recommended as available parking spaces fill up quickly. Afterwards, just down the road is the Brightside Bistro, where you can enjoy a bite to eat on their fully-licensed patio.

As if all these wonders aren’t enough, the historic town of Trinity is ready to cap off our trip.

The harbour was first used by Portuguese fishing ships as early as 1500. The explorer Gaspar CorteReal named the harbour “Trinity” as he arrived on Trinity Sunday. Soon after, fishermen began to arrive from England.

Trinity was a hotspot for exporting cod, oil rendered from whales, and seals. The air itself here seems to breathe history. In 1615, Sir Richard Whitbourne established the first court of justice in North America; the town survived attack and capture by the French three times; and was the site of the first smallpox vaccinations in North America.

ognized as Registered Heritage Structures. Amble up the manicured streets to admire the mansard roofs and saltboxes that nestle behind picket fences hosting an array of vibrant blooms.

In more modern times, Trinity has been the backdrop for major films, Peter Pan and Wendy and The Shipping News. A fan of the holidays? If images of the town evoke a sense of nostalgia or familiarity, you’ve likely seen it as a setting for Hallmark movies, My Christmas Guide, Merry Mystery Christmas, and Everything Christmas.

After sampling locally made chocolates (Aunt Sarah’s Chocolates) and ice cream (Sweet Rock), traipsing through the adorable gift shops, perusing the museums, and having a feed of fish and chips at the Dock Marina, head just down the road to Random Passage Site in New Bonaventure.

Home of the eponymous Random Passage mini series and novel, step back in time for a glimpse of life in early outport Newfoundland. Both self-guided and guided tours are available, as well as a tea room and gift shop.

After the Trinity loop, we’ve cruised the Bonavista Peninsula.

Thank you for riding with me these past few months.

While the places mentioned are must-sees, there are still many beautiful spots full of nature, history, and culture that can be found across the peninsula.

Sometimes, getting lost off the beaten track leads to adventures and stories that you would otherwise not have experienced.

The question then was: How does the design and decor of my space affect my psyche and overall health? What can I do to improve it?

Interior design and decor are all about creating and curating our personal space. We put a great deal of time and effort into that process because we crave organization, functionality, comfort, peace and stability.

On top of that, we add layers of ambiance, mood, style and character, all things that shine a light on our personality and provide the nurturing place we call home. It’s an ever-evolving practice as we move through our lives. The bottom line is that our surroundings viscerally affect us and how we function in the world.

Shifting focus to the broader landscape of our exterior surroundings, we should look at how our outside space also affects our well-being and overall psyche.

I was recently at a neighbourhood gathering where one of the original neighbours was home from England, where she has lived most of her adult life. She comes home every other summer to see family and friends, especially those in the old neighbourhood.

Maybe it’s a stage of life, the constant inevitability of change or current world affairs, but sometimes we suddenly view things we’ve seen so many times before from a different perspective. She commented on how stunning this province is. How, it seemed to her, that people have become more engaged in creating beautiful outdoor spaces, planting trees, shrubs, and flower gardens, beautifying not just their homes, but their communities, towns and cities.

She was struck by how fresh the air was and how clean the water is, how friendly everyone has been and just how peaceful it is. I guess it’s because she spends most of her time in September 2025

So, when you’re back on the Rock, and you’re hyper aware of the surroundings, it strikes you as a truly wonderful place, always with a warm and welcoming energy.

Europe, where things are very different, more congested, always busy, overcrowded and often impersonal.

Of course, she’s not wrong, but it was uplifting to be reminded how truly fortunate we are and how lucky we are to live where we do.

We often take it all for granted, and yes, we inevitably get mired down with the worries and challenges of our lives. But when we get the nudge to look up from our screens, get outside on the trails or just wander through the neighbourhood, our brains get a chance to recalibrate. The positive effect those activities have on our minds and bodies stays with us longer than we realize.

We’ve always known, intuitively, that being outside feels good, but now we have documented, scientific evidence to prove it. Who knew there’d be a ‘movement’ to encourage all of us, and especially young people to 76

spend more time outdoors, to reconnect with nature? Who knew there’d be so many studies conducted to discover the benefits of getting out and enjoying the natural beauty outside our door? I’m sure my parents, God rest their souls, would roll their eyes to think someone had to ‘do a study’ to arrive at that conclusion.

When I was a kid, the only time you weren’t outdoors was if there was homework, chores, or you felt sick.

Findings from the Mental Health Foundation in the U.K., as well as the Canadian Psychological Association, cite that ‘Nature can generate calmness, creativity, facilitate concentration and reduce depression and anxiety.’ Studies have shown that, in addition to alleviating stress, exposure to our natural environment can be effective in coping with PTSD and ADHD, curbing loneliness, irritability, even road rage, and it helps to improve sleep quality.

The most abundant colour in nature, at least until the quiet blanket of winter falls over us, is green. When we surround ourselves with its lush, 1-888-588-6353

serene, aromatic and tranquil energy, we cannot help but be affected.

Green is the colour of the heart chakra, symbolizing health, prosperity and abundance, a colour closely associated with healing and balance.

In a post from ‘One Spa World’ titled ‘The Impact Of Colour on Your

Mental & Physical Wellness’, they remind us that “colour can dictate more than just a daily mood. It can take on an integral role in healing mental and physical ailments. Colour therapy or chromotherapy, which uses the frequency and vibration of colour to heal, has been an integral part of eastern and western medicine for centuries.”

All this is to say that when you surround yourself with nature, you are filling the void, bringing yourself back to centre, arming yourself against the stresses of life.

Imagine all these benefits just from being outside, taking a walk, breathing the fresh air, noticing the green growth, rocky shores or sandy beaches. Or even just sitting in your backyard having a yarn with the neighbours.

Imagine being able to step outside your door here in our peaceful part of the planet, take a look around and really love your space.

Whether you’re a novice baker or a seasoned pro, everyone likes to pick up a new trick for better or easier ways around the kitchen. Here, appropriately, are a baker’s dozen which we’ve collected over the years from Downhome staff and our Facebook friends.

Measuring Chocolate Chips

Whenever making chocolate chip cookies and the recipe calls for 1 cup of chocolate chips, ignore it. Just chuck that whole bag of chocolate chips in there. Sample a few if you have to, but the more the merrier!

Whip Wiz

When I’m doing whipped cream/Dream Whip, I always run beaters under cold water first. This helps fluff the whip much faster.

DIY Self-Rising Flour

If a recipe calls for “self-rising flour,” make your own by adding to each cup of all-purpose flour 1 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt. Sift/whisk together well before adding to the recipe.

Step One

I made a cake when I was 14, thinking I could bake as good as my younger sister. I put all the ingredients in the cake pan. My sister said to mix all the ingredients together in a bowl first – I didn’t listen. I baked it and ended up with a mess in the cake pan. Mixing all the ingredients in a bowl is a tip I never forgot!

Favourite Substitutions

Replace 1 large egg with 1 mashed medium banana or 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce.

Replace vegetable oil 1:1 for unsweetened applesauce.

Measuring Vanilla

The cap on a vanilla extract bottle is equal to about 1 tsp.

Easy Cut Outs

When baking squares (or making ones that cool or freeze to set), first line the pan with enough parchment paper to extend over the edges by an inch or so. When it’s time to cut them, use the overhanging parchment to lift them right out of the pan whole and lay them on a cutting board. Peel down the parchment from the sides and easily cut the squares.

Cutting Cleanly

To cut the neatest cookie squares, wet your knife blade in warm water, or spray it with non-stick spray, and wipe it clean. Clean the blade between cuts, and repeat the dip/spray and clean every two or three cuts.

Cake Pan Liners

If you have trouble getting a cake to turn out cleanly from older cake pans, cut out a sheet of parchment paper to fit the bottom of the pan.

Grease the pan, lay in the parchment paper and grease that, too.

After you turn out the finished cake, peel the paper off the bottom.

Flour Your Fruit

Coat fruit in a dusting a flour before adding it to cake and muffin batter – it keeps the fruit pieces from clumping together or sinking to the bottom of the batter.

Soak Dried Fruit

Soak raisins and dates in warm water for 15-30 minutes before adding them to make them plumper and juicier in breads, cakes and muffins.

Flour Measuring

Get more accurate flour measurements by scooping the flour into the measuring cup, rather than dragging the cup through the flour, and then using a knife edge to level off the top.

Apple Crumble Coffee Cake 2 tsp unsalted butter 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 3/4 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp fine sea salt

Crumble Mixture 1 1/2 cups finely chopped toasted walnuts 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar 1/3 cup white sugar 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup unsalted butter room temperature 2 large eggs, divided 1 cup plain yogurt 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 2 Honeycrisp apples

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Butter a 9"x12" baking dish. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and sea salt together in a bowl. Set dry ingredients aside. Crumble mixture: Combine walnuts, brown sugar, white sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl until walnuts and sugars are thoroughly coated with butter; set crumble mixture aside. Beat white sugar and butter together in a separate bowl with a spatula until well blended. Whisk in egg until mixture is smooth, two to three minutes. Whisk in the second egg until thoroughly incorporated. Add yogurt and vanilla and whisk together.

Add flour mixture to yogurt mixture; whisk just until flour disappears. Do not overmix. Remove and discard cores from apples. Cut apples into 1/8- to 1/4-inch slices. Stack a few slices. Cut down the centre, lengthwise, then dice, crosswise, into cubes. Fold apples into cake batter with a spatula until just combined. Spread half the batter into the prepared baking dish. Evenly scatter half crumble mixture over top. Dollop remaining half batter on top, spreading carefully to evenly distribute, trying not to disturb the crumbs. Top with remaining crumble mixture; press crumbs into the batter very gently.

Bake in the centre of the preheated oven until a toothpick or bamboo skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Cool to room temperature before slicing and serving, about 30 minutes.

Yields eight servings.

Sticky Toffee Pudding 1 1/2 cups finely chopped, pitted dates 1 1/4 cups hot brewed tea 3/4 cup white sugar 2 tbsp white sugar 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 3 large eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp instant espresso coffee granules

Toffee Sauce 1/2 cup white sugar 1 tbsp white sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 tbsp brown sugar 3/4 cup golden syrup 1 tbsp golden syrup 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1 cup heavy cream 1 tsp vanilla extract

Combine dates and tea in a bowl and set aside to soak for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350° F . Grease an 8" round cake pan and line with parchment paper. Cream 3/4 cups plus 2 tbsp sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Sift in flour and baking powder and fold into the mixture. Add baking soda, vanilla, and espresso granules to the date-tea mixture. Add mixture to the batter and stir to produce a loose, soft, dropping consistency. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean, 1 to 1 1/2 hours. When pudding is almost finished baking, combine 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp sugar, 3/4 cup plus 1 tbsp brown sugar, 3/4 cup plus 1 tbsp golden syrup, and butter for the sauce in a heavy saucepan over low heat until melted. Simmer for five minutes, then remove from heat. Gradually stir in cream and vanilla. Return to the heat and stir until smooth, two to three minutes. Remove pudding from the oven. Spoon a little sauce onto each serving plate. Place a portion of pudding on top, then pour over more sauce. Serve remaining sauce on the side. Yields eight servings.

Lemon Blueberry Bread 1 cup white sugar 1/3 cup melted butter 2 large eggs 3 tbsp lemon juice 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt

1/2 cup milk 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 2 tbsp grated lemon zest

Glaze Topping 1 cup powdered sugar 2 tbsp lemon juice

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease an 8x4inch loaf pan. To make the batter: Beat sugar, butter, eggs, and lemon juice together in a large mixing bowl. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Stir into the egg mixture alternately with milk. Fold in blueberries, nuts, and lemon zest. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the loaf comes out clean, 60 to 70 minutes. Cool bread in the pan for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the glaze topping: Stir powdered sugar and lemon juice together in a small bowl until smooth. Remove blueberry bread from the pan and drizzle with glaze. Continue to cool on a wire rack. Yields 12 servings.

1 (8 oz) package cream cheese 2 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 cup fresh blueberries, or more to taste 1/2 cup sliced strawberries, or more to taste 1/2 cup white or grapes, or more to taste 1/2 cup sliced kiwis, or more to taste

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). To make the cookie crust: Combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl and set aside. Cream together the butter and 3/4 cup sugar until smooth in a large bowl. Add in the egg and beat well. Stir dry ingredients into the creamed mixture until just blended. Press dough into an ungreased pizza pan. Bake in the preheated oven until lightly browned, eight to 10 minutes.

Cool. To make the filling: Beat cream cheese with the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and vanilla in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Spread evenly over the top of the cooled crust. Arrange blueberries, strawberries, grapes and kiwi on top of the filling, and chill. Yields one pizza.

Oatmeal Crust

1 pound pitted dates 2/3 cup light brown sugar 2/3 cup orange juice 1 orange, zested 2 tsp vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups regular rolled oats 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup light brown sugar 3/4 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Heat dates, brown sugar, orange juice, and orange zest in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until dates have softened, absorbed the liquid, and mixture is like a paste, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Stir oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl. Cut in butter with a knife or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Lightly press 2/3 of the crumb mixture into the bottom of a 9x9-inch pan. Spread date mixture evenly over the crumb crust. Sprinkle remaining crumbs evenly over the top of the date mixture. Bake in the preheated oven until top is golden, about 30 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour before slicing into bars. Yields 16 servings.

Portuguese Custard Tarts Cooking spray 1 (11 oz) package pie crust mix 3 tbsp cold butter, cubed 1/3 cup ice cold water 4 egg yolks

1/3 cup white sugar, or to taste 1/3 cup heavy cream 1/3 cup milk 3 drops vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Spray 12 muffin cups with cooking spray. Place the pie crust mix into a bowl, and lightly rub the butter and water into the mix until the mixture holds together well enough to form a ball. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and knead several times to make the dough more elastic. Form into a ball again, and cut the ball in half; cut each half into half again (four pieces). Cut each quarter into thirds to make 12 total pieces. Roll the pieces into balls, and set aside. Beat together the egg yolks, sugar, cream, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until light and foamy, about three minutes. Strain the filling through a fine mesh strainer into a clean bowl. Press a dough ball into the bottom and about 1 1/2 inches up the sides of a prepared muffin cup. Repeat for remaining dough pieces.

Spoon each crust about 80 percent full of the egg yolk mixture. Bake in the preheated oven until the crusts are golden brown, the filling is set, and the tarts are lightly browned, 15 to 20 minutes. Yields 12 tarts.

This Month in History Hurricane Igor, a fierce Category 4 storm, tore into eastern Newfoundland on September 21, 2010, with the force of a banshee. As winds gusting up to 172 km/hr howled, residents of St. Bernard’s–Jacques Fontaine were evacuated by boat, Clarenville declared a state of emergency and downed power lines in Glovertown sparked fires. Torrential rains – over 250 mm in some areas on the Burin and Bonavista peninsulas – caused widespread flooding. Water and sewage systems failed in Sunnyside, and roads, bridges, and even parts of the TCH were washed away. Over 150 communities were temporarily isolated and power was knocked out to roughly 50,000 homes.

With damage described as “colossal” by emergency preparedness minister Tom Hedderson, the Canadian military was called in to aid recovery. The storm left behind an estimated $200 million in damages, making it the costliest hurricane in Newfoundland’s history.

Quilting Bees?

“The bumblebees is some stund.” Harry stood beside a thicket of thistles poking at the bumblebees with a forkeyed stick.

“They is so.” Gnat jabbed bees with a stick of his own.

The thistles, their stalks topped with bushy purple flowers, grew among the rocks of a tumbled down stone wall. At the tips of their leaves, prickly stabbers the size of darning needles threatened to pierce the flesh of anyone foolhardy enough to walk among them.

The late summer sun shone on the thistle tops, encouraging the abundant flowers to spread their paintbrush petals to welcome the sunbeams and the swarm of bees who slurped their nectar like thirsty barflies.

“They’m drunk on the flower juice,” said Harry.

“I ‘low,” said Gnat, as amazed as Harry at the inebriated state of the busy bees.

“They gets like that in the latter part of summer,” Harry explained.

He’d read about bee behaviour in The Great Big Book of Stinging Insects and was thus an expert.

“Let’s try to catch some,” said Gnat, rooting at a bee and causing it to fall to a lower flower where it nuzzled into the blossom as if undisturbed.

“I knows a way to trap them,” said Harry. “We’ll need some empty bottles.”

Tossing their sticks aside, and as intrepidly as ol’ Frank Buck in the Bring ‘em Back Alive stories, they hide-hoed off in search of a couple of 1-888-588-6353

empty jam bottles.

Half an hour later, the boys returned to the bed of thistles, each toting the biggest jam bottle he could find.

Lingering above Brookwater, the sun coaxed the flowers’ nectar to flow and watched expectantly as Harry and Gnat crept towards their prey.

“Mind the stabbers.” Harry edged into the thistle patch, a jam bottle in his left hand, the bottle’s cover in his right.

A few feet away, Gnat inched past the nettles and leaned over a fine fat flower and its besotted bee.

“Easy, easy...” Harry held the open mouth of his bottle slightly below a flower whose unsuspecting, imbibing bee wobbled to and fro like a drunken man. The bottle’s cover in Harry’s right hand hovered above the bee, waiting to pounce.

“Easy, easy...”

Quick as Granny caught the weasel, Harry clapped the cover down on the bumbling bee and flicked it into the jam bottle trap. “Got one!”

“Me too!” Gnat scraped a bee into his bottle.

Happy as pigs in whoopsie, and unconcerned about a scattered scratch or puncture, me buck-oes harvested bees until they each held a bottle three parts filled with boozy bumbles.

Holding their bottles up to the sun, like jewellers assaying diamonds, Harry and Gnat scrutinized the bees blundering around inside the glass.

“What’s you sleevens doing?”

Surprise! Aunt Chook stood by the side of the road holding a bundle of mismatched fabric under her arm.

“We’m just studying bees, Aunt Chook,” said Harry.

“I hope you’re not tormenting them.”

“We idden,” said Gnat.

To change the subject, Harry said, “What’s that you got there, Aunt Chook?”

Patting her bundle of cloth, Aunt Chook said, “That’s my quilt. I’m meeting some other women down in the school. We’re starting a quilting bee.”

Not realizing she’d sown a seed, Aunt Chook dodged on down the road and walked out of sight around the Turn.

Harry shook his bottle of bees.

Their reaction triggered dormant thoughts of devilment.

“I got an idea,” he said.

“I ‘low,” said Gnat.

Simply following Aunt Chook was too easy and not in the least adventurous, so, like Tom Sawyer of storybook fame, Harry entered the woods and followed the sheep’s path that ran more or less parallel to the road.

Like Tom’s buddy Huck, Gnat followed. Their bottles of bees were tucked securely inside their jackets like moonshine jars.

Spriggles tangled in their hair from the tree branches bordering the sheep’s path, Harry and Gnat arrived at the Big Rock and sat down.

Over the road, Aunt Chook waited on the school’s step for the other women to arrive.

Aunt Sissy Hatt, the Brookwater witch, entered the schoolyard toting her quilt in a wicker basket. Grumbling to herself, Aunt Hood passed the Big Rock lugging a wooden contraption as well as a bag of quilt scraps. “My quilting frame,” she told the boys as she passed.

wife reached the school and spoke briefly on the step, the women trooped inside.

After the school door closed, Aunt Mary Ginn, tardy as a lie-abed scholar, scurried past the conniving beekeepers.

Perched on the Big Rock like a brace of bay-boy gargoyles, Harry and Gnat watched the school and waited.

“We’ll give them a spell to get started,” said Harry, the details of his scheme stewing in his noggin.

“We will so,” said Gnat. Wagging

scuttled towards the school.

Leaving the ditch and dashing across the road, Harry and Gnat ducked beneath a school window.

The amplified buzzing of aggravated bees inside the jam jars echoed through the glass. Inside the school, the soft conversation of busy quilters murmured against the windowpanes.

Their noses hooked on the outside window ledge like the once popular illustration of Kilroy, Harry, and Gnat peeped into the schoolroom and watched the women work at their quilts.

He shook the bottle, causing the bees to become as broody as a bunch of drinkers recovering from a bout of inebriation. his arm like a gargoyle’s wing, he took his bottled bees from inside his jacket and inspected the sobering insects.

“They’m starting to liven up.” He shook the bottle, causing the bees to become as broody as a bunch of drinkers recovering from a bout of inebriation. The eyes of one fat bumble loomed inside the glass like eyes magnified by inch-thick spectacles.

Hauling out his jam jar, Harry gave it a jiggle and grinned when the agitated bees bumped against the glass.

“They idden happy. They’m starting to buzz like crazy.”

“Them women is right in the thick of their quilting time this,” said Gnat.

“We better get going.”

Again, because the open road was the easy route, Harry and Gnat jumped into the roadside ditch, hunkered down and, straddling the trickle of muddy water in the bottom, 94

“They’m busy as bees,” Harry said.

“You think?” said Gnat.

Sitting in a circle, the women plied their craft. Aunt Hood’s quilt was pinned to a wooden frame that resembled a caplin skiver. With an oversized needle, she weaved thread like a fisherman mending a net.

Aunt Mary Ginn fiddled with her quilt as if wondering where to add the next patch. Aunt Sissy Hatt held her quilt like a tapestry, the individual swatches of cloth glowing as if magically stitched.

Unaware of bottled bees and a pair of Satan’s imps, the quilters chitted and chatted, snipped and sewed, and created intricate designs that would turn the chops of renowned quilters green with envy.

skins eased open the window and commenced to twist open the caps of their humming jam jars.

“Mind they don’t sting you.” Harry lifted his bottle lid a smidgen, open just enough to allow the imprisoned bees to spy a possible escape route.

“We got to be quick,” said Gnat as he and Harry hoisted their jars towards the gap in the window.

“On the count of three,” said Harry.

Gnat nodded.

One. Two. Three.

Quick as lightning — perhaps even quicker — the boys whipped off the bottle tops and threw them aside.

They reeved the bottles through the open window and dumped their angry contents into the classroom.

And slammed the window shut.

A double swarm of roiled-up bees, their stingers as sharp as prickly thistle thorns, spiralled up to the ceiling, and hovered there long enough to reconnoitre the situation below.

Albeit unfair, they spotted the quilting ladies and, vengeance-driven, dove en masse.

When the first stinger jabbed her neck, Aunt Hood jumped off her chair, knocked over her quilting frame and fell among the wood and ragbag scraps. Aunt Mary Ginn screamed, and engaging her usual defence in the face of fear, fainted flowse-o on the floor. With bees in hot pursuit, several women raced in erratic circles, mindful not to trip over, or tread on, Aunt Mary.

Granny calmly batted bees, her eyes searching for the suspected cause of their wrath. Aunt Sissy glared out the window, and spotted bay-boy boot heels heading for the landwash. She raised an arm, her fingers spread. Likely, she cast a spell.

Mind that quilting bee, Gnat? Aunt Sissy surely conjured up a curse because overnight Harry and Gnat broke out in raw and oozing sores.

Upon hearing the news, not a quilter sympathized.

Labrador West – A number of people in Labrador West are once again into the stock market in a big way, thanks to the Diamond Fields Resources nickel, copper, and cobalt discovery in Voisey Bay, Labrador. With the number of junior mining companies trying to obtain properties in the area, the market is very volatile, and money made one day can be lost the next. Some local residents have decided to try to get into the action of staking claims themselves, to either find their own mineral deposit or make money by selling their claims for shares in these companies.

The provincial government, in conjunction with the soft drink industry, has launched an Adopt-aHighway program. Under the initiative, community groups, service clubs or companies can adopt a section of highway for the purpose of picking up litter.

Elliston – Piper Mark Fletcher, an Ontario resident who spends his summers in Upper Amherst Cove, NL, provided the music that welcomed guests to the Declaration Dinner that officially named Elliston as the ‘World Root Cellar Capital’.

The night of the dinner was cited by Calvin Hayley, of Tourism Elliston, as “in 194 years, this is the biggest night in the history of Elliston.”

Gretna, Louisiana – Karen Williger, a native of St. John’s, was selected ‘State Teacher of the Year’.

She was featured on a full page in National Geographic. Daughter of Rex Stirling of Pasadena, Karen posed with some of her students at John Ehret High School in Gretna, Louisiana.

In sports news, Kris Kirby of Norris Arm won a national karate gold medal. Aside from his martial arts accomplishments, he has great musical talents that include playing classical piano and guitar and performing in his own band. Elsewhere, Carl English of Patrick’s Cove, Placentia Bay, has earned a spot on Canada’s national basketball team.

Newfoundland and Labrador marketing company Bristol Group has won an international award for the manner in which it has promoted the province’s tourism industry. The company was selected by the International Academy of Communications Arts and Sciences in New York for its promotional video Vikings! 1000 Years.

Former Newfoundland Premier Frank Moores passed away at the age of 72 in a hospital in Perth, Ontario, following a year-long cancer battle. Moores was born in Harbour Grace and in 1968 was elected to the House of Commons. In 1972, Moores returned from Ottawa to run provincially and became the first Progressive Conservative premier of Newfoundland when he defeated Liberal leader and Father of Confederation, Joey Smallwood.

The oil spill that occurred at the Terra Nova field 350 km southeast of St. John’s in November 2004 has resulted in charges being laid against PetroCanada by the Canadian-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB).

More than 1,000 barrels (165,000 litres) of oil were spilled from the Terra Nova Floating Production Storage and Offloading Vessel. Dr. Ian Jones, Chair of Seabird Ecology at MUN, says the spill was responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of migratory seabirds.

There’s no telling what you may stumble across on eBay. Recently, a strange item from the province was put up for auction. The former coast guard icebreaker, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, was listed with bidding beginning at U.S. $1 million. The ship’s owner, Dan Burry, is also the owner of Star Line Inc. and operator of the Clarenville dockyard. Although there was some interest expressed in the vessel, including some potential buyers from as far away as Asia, no serious bids were placed.

The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago is returning the remains of 22 Inuit to their homeland in Labrador. The remains were removed, without consent, from an abandoned Moravian church mission in the former Labrador community of Zoar just over 80 years ago during the Rawson-MacMillian sub-Arctic expedition.

Sandbanks Provincial Park in Burgeo Islands in Newfoundland has been named one of the best beaches in Canada. Toronto-based TripAtlas.com, the world’s largest online travel resource, noted the beach for its hiking, kayaking, herds of caribou and sand dunes with beautiful views of the Anniopsquatch Mountains. The site also called the beach “one of Canada’s best-kept secrets.”

Another video game company has set up shop in Newfoundland and Labrador. Bit Trap Studios, a start-up developer of online games based in Alabama, is establishing a studio in the province and developing its game and online portal over a three to four-year period, after which the product will launch commercially. Bit Trap will invest an estimated $1.6 million in the province towards this project, and the provincial government is contributing $300,000 to assist the company in the development phase.

The rubber-clad zodiac

inflatable boat glides over the glass-clear waters of Conception Bay. It’s a somnolent Sunday afternoon near the southwestern edge of Little Bell Island. The distant fog-shrouded plateaus of Kelly’s Island resemble a great pirate ship looming out of the mist of plunder past. A pair of eagles keep watch from a rocky perch high overhead, while gulls drift by at sea level with practiced indifference.

A herd of goats, some 14 members in all sizes and shapes, head along the cusp of the clifftop, pausing to almost pose for a photo before continuing the climb upward towards wherever they go upon the uninhabited island.

I smile and tell Conception Bay South resident and photographer Greg Horner, who is at the tiller, “Well, that’s not something you see every day. If they are heading back up the cliffs, that means the forecast rain showers are probably not going to hit us.”

Sure enough, the fog disappears within minutes, and the sun beats down to reaffirm the supremacy of the caprine weather predictors.

My father, Tony Flynn (age 83 as of this writing), explained that in the 1940s and 50s, goats in groups as large as 100 roamed around Colliers unimpeded. “They had pathways carved like lace patterns on a tablecloth all over the landscape, you could follow for miles as a child,” he’d say.

“Now in those times the summers were very hot, and it could be a gorgeous day with the sun almost splitting the rocks and not a cloud to be seen. But if you suddenly saw the goats coming down en masse off the mountain, you ran and covered up the drying hay or bought in the wash off the clothesline, because you could put money on it that hard rain was coming within a half hour or so.”

This conversation brought back my favourite examples of harbingers of impending bad weather in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Of course, many readers are familiar with the mantra “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight, red sky at the morning, sailors take warning.”

According to an article on meteorological mysteries by the Science Reference Section of the Library of Congress, there are facts to back this: “When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and

The reverse was also true, he said.

Another intriguing phenomenon is the parhelion, more commonly called sundogs or sunhounds. It’s often recognized as “an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot on one or both sides of the sun.

Sundogs are formed by the refraction and scattering of light through specially-shaped ice crystals suspended in the air. While the true origin of the term is unknown and dates back to antiquity, I like the Scandinavian folklore suggesting it is a con-

Crepsular rays, or what folklore refers as “the sun drawing water” has traditionally been a sign of rain in the forecast. stellation of two wolves hunting the sun and the moon, one wolf travelling before and one after. The parhelion in Newfoundland and Labrador folklore is believed to indicate coming cold and storms.

Perhaps the most poetically-named visual is what Tony Flynn and members of an older generation still call “The sun drawing water.”

The technical name is crepuscular rays, but they’re often called God rays. They are essentially sunbeams that originate when the sun is peaking from near a layer of clouds, during the twilight period. The rays resemble slanted parallel railway tracks going from Earth or over the ocean up to the sky. According to old 104

hands, it’s a sign that rain may soon be on the way.

Tracy Lawrence, originally of English Harbour West, mentioned that due to her hometown’s geographic layout and frequent coastal atmospheric changes, rays could often be seen over a graveyard near sunset.

Kind-hearted seniors would say that the souls of recently departed were riding the beams of light up to heaven.

My final favourite offbeat weather item departs from the land of God to the realms of fairies. The enchantress Morgana Le Fay from the legends of King Arthur lent her name to the Italian phrase “Fata Morgana” (or “The Fairy Morgana”). “A Fata Morgana is a complex form of superior 1-888-588-6353

mirage that’s seen in a narrow band right above the horizon,” which “significantly distorts the object or objects on which they are based, often such that the object is completely unrecognizable.”

A Fata Morgana may be seen on land or at sea, in polar regions, or deserts and may involve almost any kind of distant object, including boats, islands, and the coastline.

“The mirage comprises several inverted (upside-down) and upright images stacked on top of one another. Fata Morgana mirages also show alternating compressed and stretched zones.”

In Newfoundland, old fisher people familiar with normal positions and sizes of prominent local landmarks

report seeing Fata Morgana on Conception Bay. This occurs on rare hot winter days when the air temperature is unseasonably high over the much colder ocean, creating the unsettled thermal conditions and air duct needed.

Since they change quickly, the Fata Morgana are notoriously difficult to photograph but amazing to see.

Locals say Fata Morgana is followed a day or so later by unfavourable weather, as if the fairies were having a little joke.

The tragic loss

of three members of one family from Shea Heights, St. John’s, when they went fishing outside the Narrows in September 2016, brought to mind my own frightening experience when I was a boy. It seems that only by a quirk of fate did we not suffer the same outcome.

Our family lived on Mill Bridge Road, which was just below South Side Road West. In those days, Shea Heights was called the Brow. In my story, the main character, Mr. Smith and his family lived on Southside Road West, just below the Brow. The house where the Smiths lived is still there, however, Mill Bridge Road and where our house stood are gone, absorbed by the expansion of the harbour. My story begins in the late summer of 1945. I was ten years old.

Shortly after we had arrived home from Aunt Eliza’s, Mr. Smith came to visit with an unusual request. He and his family were good friends of ours, and they played cards together often. Mr. Smith was a Chief Petty Officer in the Canadian Navy, and he was stationed in St. John’s.

As it was, he arrived at our house one day and asked Mom if I would like to go fishing with him in the harbour outside the Narrows.

Mr. Smith was on leave, and it would be the last chance he had to take his son Ray out fishing before his leave was over. He wondered if I would like to come along, as it would be company for Ray, who was a year younger than I. It was alright with me because I loved to go fishing.

Mom asked him how he was going to go fishing since she knew he did not have a boat. He assured her by saying he had a fisherman friend down in the Battery and had arranged for a loan of a boat and gear from him. So it was arranged that we would go out 108

the following Saturday morning.

When we got to the dock where the fisherman had the boat, I was surprised to see it was not a fishing skiff like my uncle’s, but more like a dory, about twelve feet overall, with one end squared off, on which was mounted a small outboard motor. It looked like a coffin to me. However, I had every confidence in Mr. Smith, he being a sailor and all.

The fisherman friend showed Mr. Smith how to start the motor, and after several tries, finally got it going.

The outboard was not new and had no more than a four-hp motor, and it had a very unhealthy sound.

My confidence factor dropped a little as we left the dock. Mr. Smith was a big man, and when he sat in the stern, by the motor, the bow stuck up in the air. He had me sit at the bow and Ray sat in the middle on the thwart, to balance out the load. Mr. Smith was in a jovial mood as we headed to the Narrows, saying how many fish we would catch.

John’s harbour is naturally landlocked, and inside the Narrows, the water is always calm. Outside the Narrows, it could be blowing a gale with waves up to four feet, but once a boat got inside the Narrows, the winds were abated by the high cliffs of Signal Hill, and the harbour was like a mill pond. Once we got to the mouth of the Narrows and faced the open Atlantic, we could see it was all white caps. It was blowing a small gale, and there was an appreciable drop in the temperature of about ten degrees that you could feel.

We were almost outside the Narrows, about even with the Fort Amherst lighthouse, when the first big wave hit us. The wave hit the bow of the boat and almost knocked me overboard, but I had a good grip on the gunwales and held on. Ray, on the other hand, who was just sitting on the centre seat, was knocked to the bottom of the boat and began

wailing like he was scared to death.

Mr. Smith was no longer jovial and kept a good grip on the tiller to keep the boat pointed into the waves. The boat was bouncing up and down like a cork, and then the worst thing happened: the motor conked out.

The next big wave hit the boat broadside, and there was a note of apprehension in Mr. Smith’s voice as he told us to sit still and not stand up.

This was hardly necessary as Ray was lying flat at the bottom of the boat and was drenched by the cold water as it cascaded over the side.

Mr. Smith was trying desperately to get the motor started. Without any power, the boat was blowing in the wind and waves toward the Fort Townshend side, like a huge grey rock rising out of the ocean.

but each time he pulled the cord it sputtered, but would not start; I said, “Don’t worry Mr. Smith, I can row” and crawled over Ray and put the oars into the pins in the gunwales and pulled on one oar to get the boat into the wind.

When we got back to the dock and faced the boat’s owner, Mr. Smith was fit to be tied. Being a big man and a sailor, he had a few choice words for his fisherman friend, saying something about not giving that motor to his worst enemy, adding a

The effect of the one oar dragging on one side and me pulling the other helped steady the boat somewhat.

The outboard was old and did not have the recoil housed internally with an automatic recoil. Instead, the cord had to be manually wrapped around a large flywheel that was mounted externally on the top of the motor. This was extremely difficult to perform in a small boat that was bouncing up and down in waves up to three feet, with the wind blowing the boat toward the rocks.

Each time he pulled the cord and it did not start, he had to wrap the cord around the flywheel again, and although it was probably less than a minute to do, it seemed like forever.

We were now within a stone’s throw of the Fort Townshend side, and after about six tries, and not a minute too soon, the motor sputtered into life. Mr. Smith gradually turned the boat back into the harbour, and once inside again, it was calm.

“Well, boys,” Mr. Smith said, “I guess it’s a little too rough to go fishing today. We’ll go again another time.”

few swear words about the thing conking out, and how we were almost swamped. These words were not for young ears, but I was old enough to know what they meant, and they were my feelings exactly.

When Mr. Smith dropped me off at my house, Mom asked, “How come you’re back so soon, and why is Ray soaking wet?”

Mr. Smith told her briefly of our adventure and downplayed the danger because he didn’t want to alarm her. In parting, he said that we’d go fishing again when the weather was better, but we never went fishing outside the St. John’s Narrows again.

In retrospect, the quirk of fate was the fact that the motor stalled before reaching the outside of the Narrows.

What seemed like a misfortune at the time was probably what saved us, because had we gone beyond the Narrows completely, our little boat and motor were not made for the three and four-foot waves, and the gale of wind of the Atlantic.

In those days, we had no life jackets or flotation devices of any kind. We would have been swamped for sure.

Colourful Culture

The drawing on the opposite page

is the work of Newfoundland Mi’kmaq artist Marcus Gosse, a member of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band. His grandmother, Alice Maude Gosse (nee Benoit) is a Mi’kmaq Elder from Red Brook (Welbooktoojech) on the Port au Port Peninsula.

Marcus’ work has been exhibited in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax; The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in St. John’s, NL; and the Canada 150 Art Show at the Macaya Gallery in Miami, FL; and his work is in private collections around the world.

He has generously offered a series of colouring pages that run monthly in Downhome. Each image depicts a NL nature scene and teaches us a little about Mi’kmaq culture and language. Each colouring page includes the Mi’kmaq word for the subject, the phonetic pronunciation of the word, and the English translation. And you’ll notice a design that Marcus incorporates into most of his pieces – the eight-point Mi’kmaq Star.

This symbol dates back hundreds of years and is very important in Mi’kmaq culture. Marcus’ Mi’kmaq Stars are often seen painted with four colours: red, black, white and yellow, which together represent unity and harmony between all peoples. Many Mi’kmaq artists use the star, and various Mi’kmaq double curve designs, to decorate their blankets, baskets, drums, clothing and paintings.

Milestones

There’s a home video that’s famous in our household. There

aren’t many of them to go around of me at a young age, but this one certainly stands out: I am five years old. I am dressed for the cool of a September morning.

There’s a frosty morning dew on the grass that’s thawing in the morning light as it crests over the hill. The school bus rounds the corner and parks directly in front of my house – the only house on the street. As the door swings open, the bus driver smiles, inviting my shy, stubborn self to join the rest of the kids who excitedly await their first day of school.

Behind the camera, my parents encourage me to take the first step. You can’t see them, but the light in their voices says they’re smiling widely. Little me turns towards the bus, and parents barely get out their goodbyes before the camera drops and begins to shake as they run to catch me as I bolt down the street.

I’d be lying if I said that every time I see a small kid stepping onto a school bus, I don’t think back on the time in which such a simple act was beyond comprehension for my five-year-old self. It’s funny because if you watch 132

that footage, a school teacher would be the last thing you’d think would be on my career radar. I know, of course, that I’m not the only shy kid to not step onto the bus on that milestone day. My parents weren’t the only ones who had been left embarrassed when they walked back up to the bus driver to say “it’s okay, we’ll just bring him ourselves.”

A few years ago, I stepped back into A. P. Low Primary for the first time in a long time. “The Green School,” as I called it in the days leading up to kindergarten, still had the same smell.

Some of the walls had been painted different colours and some faces had been replaced, but the same stairs where my feet had stepped were still there. The same railings that my little hands had helped smooth down over time still stood, and it was difficult not to reflect on all the memories that were held within its walls.

As I watched teachers guide little students through the halls, I wondered (as I do quite often these days) 1-888-588-6353

what it will be like when my children get to this stage in life. What kind of memories will they make? What crafts will they create in art class? Who will they sit next to on the bus? Will they embarrass me like I embarrassed my parents? (I think the answer is quite obvious: if they’re any ounce like me, there’s no doubt they will).

Though, in part, I do welcome the embarrassment. My parents, from time to time, still tease me about the moment when their stubborn kid bolted away from the bus, but I always remind them that I gave them a memory they’ll never forget, thank you very much. They always laugh, but mostly

I think they’d like to relive it all again.

Funny how those moments, no matter how embarrassing, always make us want to go back. I’m finding that a lot of late. Each day that passes, I realize how quickly those times are coming, no matter how much I want it to slow down.

Someday soon, my boys will be waiting to step onto the school bus for the very first time, and I know for a fact that on that first day of school, if one of them takes off running, I won’t wish for them to stop. Instead, I’d just want the moment to stand still so I could savour every last detail as I chase after them.

Have you ever driven a short bus through the streets of Quidi Vidi? Me neither, thank God, but I can now say I’ve been a party and a passenger in the endeavour. Don your BRIDE sashes and tighten the caps of your hip flasks because we’re tackling bachelor and bachelorette parties.

Just as well, really. As I write in mid-summer, whilst the unerring sun flagrantly pierces the gauzy gray, I’ve no doubt there are young lovebirds around town who are prepping for their pre-wedding extravaganzas. This is Friday, after all, when love and the threat of intoxication hang heaviest in the muggy air. Beer pong is being set up on cleared dining room tables, and maids of honour are buying less-than-honourable drinking straws (but we won’t discuss those).

Last week, my big ol’ buddy Buddha had his bachelor. He’s not the actual religious leader, by the way, that’s just his nickname. My brother in horror, I’ve mentioned Buddha before; Grind Mind’s FX and practical effects man.

The day began at the shooting range, which I really wanted to attend, but the price was simply too handsome to take part, sadly. If I’d been wielding firearms in the past week, I’m sure I’d be writing an entirely different “What Odds” this month. Me and a handgun – now that’s a topic.

Anyway, we met at the Avalon Mall, where we waited in the Winners parking lot for the bus to collect us. If you were around there on the fourth at four PM and you saw a bunch of dudes hanging around like a tailgate party, that was us.

Sorry about that. After half an hour or so, we agreed as a unit that we should’ve just “done this all day”; hang out in the mall parking lot for a few drinks, but we had other fish to fry.

We get on this bus, but no one knows where to direct it. We were like a bunch of kids with a limo, but no prom. Mike suggested we hit the fa1-888-588-6353

mous Inne Of Olde, and before we know it, we’re being whisked away, past the Starbucks and the thrift shops, on our way to our first stop.

As I’m sipping cider and chatting with Buddha’s buddies, I take little notice as we snake our way through the throngs of tourists to our destination.

Eventually, I glance out the window to see the looky-loos less than an arm’s reach away. After our stop at the bar (lovely atmosphere, Screech-ins on tap, be sure to visit), we got back on board. As our brave driver tried to extricate us from the neighbourhood, we encountered an ambulance, lights and sirens going, trying to navigate around us. The pair of plump vehicles had a bit of a standoff amid the revellers as they tried to get around one another like broad people trying to overtake each other on an escalator.

It dawned on me, then, what a job this bus driver had; thirty thirtysomethings in every seat, spilling drinks on themselves, laughing raucously and singing along at the top of their lungs to “Wagon Wheel” while you’re trying to navigate a bus through streets the width of a motorhome’s hallway. When we got off at our next stop, I heard one of Buddha’s buddies say the driver nearly clipped someone’s birdhouse, but could you blame them? What a gauntlet to navigate.

Much like marriage, I suppose. Matrimony has its share of narrow, twisty roads, so there’s probably some metaphor in there if we were to dig for www.downhomelife.com

it. But there’s no time! Our next stop was upon us, which was Stanley’s for karaoke – an admittedly wholesome activity for a bachelor party, given the alternative forms of evening entertainment that tend to be popular on nights such as these.

When Yuk Yuk’s was in its heyday, I’d deal with tables of bachelor and bachelorette parties on a near-weekly basis. Sometimes, a few were happening at once. Performing comedy for several bachelor(ette) parties is like trying to substitute teach a bunch of… well, it’s like trying to do anything with a bunch of drunken friends you don’t know.

Have you ever tried to organize a bunch of drunk friends out on the town? It’s essentially impossible. The best thing to do in such a situation is to compliment the size of their drinking straws, ask the crowd to give the bride or groom a hand, and move on.

And that’s what I’ll do now as I sign off for the evening.

Please raise your teas and beers to Buddha and Amanda. They’ll be married by the time you read this, and all our flasks will be rinsed and put away to await the next happy couple.

remembering the lost by dianna brown

On July 27th, 2025, in Grand Bank,

a beautiful memorial ceremony was held at the Provincial Mariners’ Memorial Garden in remembrance of loved ones whose lives had been taken by the sea. People gathered in the beautiful gardens overlooking a shallow pool with over 300 steel plaques immersed, each carved with a mariner’s name.

When the sun shines, the shadow of the name is cast down on smooth beach rocks. On Widow’s Walk, a life-size bronze statue of a woman stands alone, looking out to the ocean, forever watching and waiting for her husband to return from the sea. This woman is a symbol of strength for the community, especially for the widows, who had to continue raising and supporting their families. The memorial takes place each year, and although there is no relief for the pain, the service brings an element of closure and peace.

I had the pleasure of speaking with one of the last four widows living in Grand Bank, who shared her tragic love story. Mary Lou and Clyde met at a cousin’s wedding. Immediately, Clyde knew Mary Lou was the girl he wanted to marry. They were wed in 1960. “I was proud to call him my husband,” said Mary Lou. In 1961, they had a daughter, and 18 months later, they had a son. “Times were tough, and we might have been poor, but we were so happy.”

On February 19th, 1966, 26-year-old Mary Lou looked out her front window facing the sea. She had a strange feeling as she waited for the Blue Mist’s arrival. “I was up at 6 a.m. hoping and praying to see the boat.”

However, the Blue Mist never arrived—its crew members had perished on that cold night. The support she received from family and friends was immense. In sharing the community’s generosity, she recalls, “People were so kind— I received seventeen boilers of soup at once. And that was only one thing.” Just one year later, Mary Lou had tuberculosis for the second time, leaving her children with no mother or father. For seven and a half months, the children were left in the care of their grandparents. She said the people of Grand Bank helped her through these heart-wrenching periods of her life, and now she feels blessed to have the Memorial Garden made possible by the Grand Bank Heritage Society.

With a love so strong after fifty-six years, Mary Lou shared that she was not able to say Clyde’s name for a long time. Although it still hurts and she still gets emotional, she is thankful that Clyde did leave her something— www.downhomelife.com

her children. He will never be completely lost to Mary Lou, as like a legacy, she sees him coming through in their son and daughter.

“When they laugh, it’s his same laugh. In our children, I feel Clyde’s warmth all around me.”

The story touched songwriter, Arnold Burry, who has been writing lyrics for years. “I enjoy writing lyrics that capture real-life experiences of Newfoundland. A judge in a songwriting contest suggested I put some of my lyrics to music. I followed his advice and have since recorded many songs; some are on Facebook and YouTube. I am deeply inspired by the local stories and the people of my home province, Newfoundland and Labrador. The region is rich in history and stories that I have cherished throughout my life.

would eventually set to music.

As a child, I enjoyed hearing the elders on the wharves and in the fishing stages share stories about politics, lost ships, the seal hunt, and brave men at sea who fought for their lives under harsh conditions – some of whom survived. There were also tales of witches and ghost stories. I can still recall the stories told by the light of oil lamps that hung on the walls during the early years before electricity, telephones, and television arrived in my hometown of Greenspond. Those memories continue to inspire me to this day.

“I knew little about the history of Grand Bank until I read the articles written by Allan Stoodley, a retired CBC reporter. He captured the many stories of Grand Bank in great detail.

It’s difficult to comprehend the tragedies that have affected the people of Grand Bank and the surrounding area. Over the years, 378 men who sailed out of Grand Bank have perished at sea. That’s an astounding number, and I couldn’t help but think of the children, wives, mothers, and loved ones left behind.”

Arnold then contacted Mary Lou, who took him on an incredible journey. “Not only did I learn about the history of Grand Bank, but I also wrote three new songs. “Children of

Lost Sailors” – the story is told from the children’s perspective. “Is it True” – the story is told from the widow’s perspective, and “Daddy’s Shoes” is Mary Lou’s story. I was blessed to have the expertise of Dave Fitz and the beautiful voice of Kim Hamlyn for these songs.”

“Daddy’s Shoes” captures Mary Lou’s heartache of having to tell her then three and four-year-old children that their Dad was never coming home. “For months, our three-year-old son wore his Dad’s boots, which were miles too long, but he insisted on wearing them until his Dad came home.”

After all these years, Mary Lou has found the strength and courage to mention Clyde’s name again, and has given her children something precious – memories of their father. Mary Lou holds close the memories of her husband and reminisces over a picture of them together: “That’s what love is.”

Special Places

The tendency to mark places

where “we’ve been” is as old as the human race. Such inclinations have led explorers to carve their initials on tree trunks or etch them on rock faces in the hope that their discoveries wouldn’t be forgotten. Unfortunately, for many explorers, their markings as well as their accomplishments have faded with the passage of time.

Of a more lasting nature are the stone landmarks constructed by the Inuit and other peoples who inhabited the Arctic regions of North America.

While the original purpose of those landmarks, commonly called Inuksuks, is unknown, one theory is that they were navigational markers that guided those early hunters over the immensity of a bleak and featureless landscape.

Many, very simple in design, are merely a jumble of rocks piled several feet over the bedrock. Others, involving a more careful selection of stones, might have been intended to represent themselves as guardians over their land. In all likelihood, they marked special places which, quite possibly, were the sites of successful caribou

hunts, the location of food caches or other activities essential to their survival. Regardless of the reasons for their construction, their presence remains as the physical manifestation of a culture and of a way of life that has sustained a people over countless generations.

For that reason, their landmarks are often regarded as special places. That, most certainly, isn’t unusual as all cultures profess to have their own special places. Unlike the simple Inuksuks, their monuments to serve as markers are often magnificent in scale and design; places such as shrines and temples where pilgrims gather for physical or mental healing.

On a far lesser scale, most folks have their unique places which exist, more

or less, as signposts as they age through the years. Such places, both spiritual and physical, are areas where they can return when they need to relax or put things in perspective.

Even for those who left ‘Old Harbours’ such as Tilting, never to return, special places often remain vivid in their memory. Then, far from home, they may wander over yesterday’s trails to their favourite trout ponds and to berry-picking barrens where a family outing made a tedious task an enjoyable experience.

Many, most likely, can recall the cool refreshment of spring water bubbling to the surface on the Cape Trail where, in the summer heat, their thirst was quenched on a tree-shaded hillside that beckoned weary travellers to take a rest.

Special places are often shared with others; from the places we played as children, to where old fishermen gather to spin yarns and keep a watch

over the sea. Capelin rolling ashore on rocky beaches, the cry of a loon over still waters and the casual trot of a fox as he crosses the meadow are reminders that nature constantly offers up something special.

Not all special places are meant to be shared. Rattles in a brook, below which, shaded by alders, are steadies where, unfailingly, big trout rise, tempted by fly or a lure. Such places, of tranquillity and solitude, anglers are inclined to keep secret, and are extremely disappointed when they see others in their vicinity.

Fortunately, our island has a multitude of special places, so much so that a walk on a wood’s path or along a seashore trail, which would normally take an hour, often turns into a much longer outing. That isn’t surprising as, along the way, hikers often linger to erect their Inuksuks. One thing is certain: there will be plenty of special places to choose from.
