RELOCATION BANNER ELK: Banner Elk is a charming town with cobblestone streets located in the heart of Avery County. Banner Elk lies between Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain, both known as the ski capitol of the south. Activities include skiing, golf, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, rafting, fishing and more. Home to the Woolly Worm festival, Banner Elk offers fine lodging, world-class dining and unique shops. Lees-McRae, an accredited four-year college, is located in downtown Banner Elk with a program tailored for every student.

Accommodations ELK PARK: Once a bustling range from cabins and lodges to junction, Elk Park was one of the most populated areas of Avery County campgrounds. Linville Falls is a great place for fishing, too. in the 1940s, but was left almost CROSSNORE: Named after its original settler, George Crossnore, the town of Crossnore is home to a prominent school and its cottage industries. In 1911, Drs. E.H. and Mary Martin Sloop established Crossnore School. Today, there is a weaving room, art gallery and resale store on the campus to raise money for the school. Preservation efforts have resulted in a new walking path.

NEWLAND: This small municipality has been the county seat of Avery County since Newland was incorporated in 1913 and has the distinction of being the highest county seat east of the Mississippi. The recently remodeled classical courthouse overlooks a traditional town square bordered by shops and churches, complete with a memorial to Avery County veterans. Newland is home to several annual festivals, and a beautiful Riverwalk.

PLUMTREE: More than just the site of the movie “Winter People,” Plumtree on Highway 19E in southwest Avery County is a breathtaking synthesis of history and beauty. The Toe River rushes vigorously through the center of the tiny community offering superb trout fishing and relaxation opportunities. Plumtree is also home to Fraser Fir Christmas trees, mica museum, brewery, camping, and Toe River Lodge.

PINEOLA: Pineola is an unincorporated community that spans approximately three miles of Christmas tree farms. Pineola is the site of several businesses, including a general store and a small hotel. The Linville River flows through the area and is impounded by a dam into a small lake for Linville Land Harbor, a resort community. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes through the southeast portion of the area. During the early 1900s, it was the site of a large logging operation and sawmill. The East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (Tweetsie) operated in the community until 1939.

SEVEN DEVILS: Established as a resort in the 1960s, Seven Devils was incorporated in 1979. The Town is sheltered by the mile-high Hanging Rock Mountain and Dunveagan Peak, and is home to Hawksnest’s Tubing and Zip Line, one of the longest snow tubing and zip line facilities on the East Coast.

SUGAR MOUNTAIN: With its 1,200-foot vertical, Sugar Mountain Resort is the largest ski area in North Carolina, and one of few resorts breaking a 1,000-foot vertical south of New England. But Sugar Mountain isn’t just a winter destination. In the spring, summer and fall the resort offers hiking, biking, lift rides and its popular Sugar Mountain Oktoberfest.
