FUN FACT: Along the Black River you will find the oldest known trees east of Jacksonville

the Rocky Mountains: a stand of 1,700-year-old bald cypress. These ancient trees are easily recognized by their huge buttresses and flat tops that have been blown out by countless storms. In recognition of the fact that the Black River is one of the cleanest, high-quality waterways in North Carolina, the state designated the river an Outstanding Resource Water in 1994. The Black River is a treat to canoe throughout the seasons. You will relish drifting down the slow-moving tea-colored river flanked by stately bald cypress draped with Spanish moss. Swamp roses bloom in the spring and spider lilies grace the water in the summer. Spring is a great time to see migratory songbirds nesting, while the foliage is outstanding in the fall.

Sampson County 406 County Complex Rd., Clinton, NC, 28328, 910-592-6308

Tucked away in the coastal plains of southeastern North Carolina is the rich lands of Sampson County. The county was established in April 1784 by Scotch-Irish settlers who first came to the area in the 1740s searching for fertile farm lands. Among the crops grown locally are tobacco, corn, cotton, wheat, sweet potatoes and soybeans. The area has become a major center for the production of chickens, swine and turkeys. Sampson County and each of its municipalities combine to offer an ideal business environment with a relaxed lifestyle and the warm, caring familiarity of communities where hospitality is a way of life and residents know and care for their neighbors. Today, over 450 miles of the 1,000 mile route are open for use. Partners across North Carolina are helping to plan and build the trail to link communities together and to serve as the backbone of a growing system of land and water trails. When completed, the route will pass through 37 counties containing about 40 percent of the state’s population. The trail is used by people out for an afternoon stroll as well as those planning to hike the trail from one end of the state to the other. MST has the distinction of being the highest elevation, long-distance trail in the eastern United States, where it crosses Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet (2,037 m).
