Water and Sanitation on water storage in Northern Cape

NORTHERN CAPE | MARLITA CLAASSENS

The weekly Reservoir Status Report from the Department of Water and Sanitation indicates a week-over-week decline in water storage in the Northern Cape. This is to be expected, says Department of Water and Sanitation spokesman Mr. Sputnik Ratau. The Department of Water and Sanitation is closely monitoring water levels and what we are seeing now that we are entering the driest winter season is that the weekly storage capacity of the dams continues to decrease, although not significantly. The Department of Water and Sanitation urges all citizens, industry, municipalities and all water service authorities to implement efficient methods in the use of water”. indicates that the Northern Cape’s Full Capacity Supply (FSC) is this week at 107.4% of capacity. The Vanderkloof Dam, which borders the Free State and the Northern Cape, is at 100.2%, while the Orange River system is averaging 99.9%. The other dams are as follows: Vaalharts is 80.6%, Spitskop on the Harts River is 102.6%, Douglas Storage Weir is 116.8%, Boegoeberg is 184%, and Karee Dam, which is the only storage dam in the Northern Cape, is a meager 9.9%. Note that Karee Dam is the only storage dam in the Northern Cape, the others are waterbalancing dams designed to act as multi-use facilities. Typically, these surge dams or storage dams serve as distribution points from which water is diverted to pipelines, canals, or power-

generating turbines or pumping stations. These are the height meters at some of the gauging stations in the North Cape: Marksdrift is at a height of 1,464 meters, Katlani, which is just below the confluence of the Vaal and Orange rivers, is at 2,543 meters. At the Prieska gauging station, the Orange River system is at an elevation of 2,147 meters. Blouputs just below the Augrabies Falls is currently at 1,722 meters. Water levels in the Vaal and Orange River systems will vary depending on the width and depth of the particular river. media@veldbrandmediasa.co.za

Medical equipment handed over to Siyancuma Local Municipality healthcare facilities

LOCAL | SIYANCUMA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY In support of primary healthcare in the Siyancuma Local Municipality, a number of healthcare facilities received much needed medical equipment. The handover of the equipment took place recently, with the Department of Health local office and Provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS) office officials in attendance. In partnership with the Department of Health, Boikanyo Solar funded the equipment as part of their Healthcare Support Programme, which has a keen focus on supporting the needs of primary healthcare facilities that service the beneficiary communities. These facilities include: Breipaal Healthcare Clinic, Bongani Healthcare Clinic as well as the Hester Malan Hospital and the EMS. Due to a shortage of medical equipment, healthcare facilities had to refer patients to the hospital as it was the only facility with an ECG machine. As a result, patients would have to travel far and wait a long time to receive medical care, causing a backlog at the hospital. “The healthcare facilities were in desperate need of assistance as the equipment available was either

outdated or faulty. With this donation, we are confident that this medical equipment will allow the department to better serve the community and foster a healthy environment for all,” said Pamela Matyeka, Community Liaison Officer for Boikanyo Solar. Among the equipment provided was an ECG recorder, two vital signs monitors, numerous fingertip pulse oximeters, Hilbro laryngoscope sets, as well as an EMS team tool kit. The availability of this equipment will enable healthcare facilities to provide better treatment plans in a more efficient manner. “The equipment issued to EMS team will be in good use in case of emergency. When the ambulance is delayed and the EMS team is activated about the emergency, having a fully equipped jumper bag can help in stabilising a patient until the ambulance arrives,” concluded one of the Douglas EMS managers. media@veldbrandmediasa.co.za

Lekker man lekker, "no dull moment"! (Kol. 4:6) Ek wens net daar kan 'n rooi lig by my aangaan as ek self die dwaas is. ~ Willem Botha

Youth Day 2022

Add the spaghetti. Cook over medium heat, stirring regularly to prevent sticking, for 15 minutes or until the pasta is cooked, adding extra hot water to the saucepan if necessary. Season to taste. 6. Just before serving, sprinkle with parmesan cheese.

Youth Day commemorates the Soweto youth uprising of 16 June 1976. In 1975 protests started in African schools after a directive from the then Bantu Education Department that Afrikaans had to be used on an equal basis with English as a language of instruction in secondary schools. The June 16, 1976, Uprising that began in Soweto and spread countrywide profoundly changed the socio-political landscape in South Africa. Events that triggered the uprising can be traced back to policies of the Apartheid government that resulted in the introduction of the Bantu Education Act in 1953. The rise of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) and the formation of South African Students Organisation (SASO) raised the political consciousness of many students while others joined the wave of antiApartheid sentiment within the student community. When the language of Afrikaans alongside English was made compulsory as a medium of instruction in schools in 1974, black students began mobilizing themselves. On 16 June 1976 between 3000 and 10 000 students mobilized by the South African Students Movement's Action Committee supported by the BCM marched peacefully to demonstrate and protest against the government’s directive. The march was meant to culminate at a rally in Orlando Stadium. On their pathway, they were met by heavily armed police who fired teargas and later live ammunition on demonstrating students. This resulted in a widespread revolt that turned into an uprising against the government. While the uprising began in Soweto, it spread across the country and carried on until the following year. The aftermath of the events of June 16, 1976, had dire consequences for the Apartheid government. Images of the police firing on peacefully demonstrating students led an international revulsion against South Africa as its brutality was exposed. The 2022 call to action continue to encourage the youth and media to follow Youth Month conversations and engage in all platforms.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR BOSTON STUDENTS! Ari Katz of Boston City Campus provides insights as to the benefits of adding international qualifications to your CV. “Modern-day companies and industries have become quite flat structures to enable more opportunities for more people, on a global scale. As part of the fourth industrial revolution, employers and employees have to embrace new ideas, concepts, and strategies. Organisations aim to remain competitive and relevant by operating on a broad platform, liaising with international businesses, exchanging goods and services; and implementing these new ideas and services in their own corporate structure. To remain competitive and relevant, employees and business owners will need to be armed with international skills and equivalencies so that they can operate on a global scale”.

Boston City Campus (Boston) is recognised and awarded accreditation as an Independent Higher Education institution with the British Accreditation Council (BAC). The BAC is recognised globally as an influential voice on standards and quality for the education sector. The BAC currently accredits more than 230 institutions in 19 countries. “We believe strongly in the importance of being locally accredited as well as globally,” says Katz. “The world is a small operating system and work borders fall away when you hold globally recognised qualifications.” “We are thrilled to bring these benefits to our graduates,” says Katz. “In essence graduates can easily gain international qualifications using their Boston diploma or degree as a starting point”. Today, anyone aspiring for a career in the management domain needs to have a global mindset to get a career break in the current business industry. 'International' is a serious concept and buzzword in today’s marketplace. It is a highly valued aspect of ones CV. “An international degree helps you create a robust bridge between you and your future career, through which you can achieve a greater exposure to attain the opportunities in the first place”, says an international jobs consultant. Katz continues that “topping up your local qualification with an accredited international qualification makes you a global player. Moreover, even when you operate locally, it makes you that much more attractive to your local employers.” Alida Hattingh of Boston Welkom adds that Boston has made the journey for students and graduates a lot smoother. “We have learned from experience in higher education over the more than 31 years that we need to add a lot of value to make the transition from higher education to the workplace smooth, and to ensure our grads add value to the employer” says Hattingh. We offer Full Time and Part Time Study Options for students who may already be in the workplace. You can choose to study from home, work or at Boston Welkom! With our methodology your Lectures are online and you will never miss a class, in addition you will have personalized monitoring and mentoring. Your support centre is there to support you every step of the way – your journey at Boston will not be alone. With over 99 careers and programmes to choose from, Boston can ensure you meet the demands of a corporate opportunity!

We know that students can stress when starting higher education and we try to eliminate as much of the stress as we can. So we have included all textbooks are included in our Tuition Fees – there is no need to buy additional Textbooks. No extra costs and no rushing to source books. We also give our Higher Education students access to a complete online Library to assist them with research. Even the application process is simple, online and free. And you will get a response in a few working days. (Applications can be done online at www.boston.ac.za and remember to select your support center). Applications are based on your endorsement, you don’t need to stress about APS scores. (Some degrees may have additional requirements, chat to your training advisor.) And if you wish to make sure you are matching yourself to the correct career, complete our free Career Assessment value R599. Higher Education fees can also be stressful, so we have made plans to offer various monthly payment options to suit different needs. “Boston offers a range of qualifications. Prospective students should use the opportunity to reflect on higher education as a means to secure employment, and to ensure professional career advancement, by completing a Boston programme that is locally and internationally recognised.” says Alida.” We like the concept of making our grads global citizens, so Boston is now also a candidate for accreditation of specific programmers by the ACBSP – the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (United States of America). Consider why these international accreditations and recoginition are significant for Boston as an institution, and outlines some benefits for the student. According to CEO Katz, higher education institutions increasingly have to locate themselves within the global context of an ever-changing educational landscape. “At the same time, there is a strong drive to show how contextual realities shape educational theory and practices. In other words – higher education institutions such as Boston must stay in touch with the needs and skills demands of business to remain relevant.”

The Interpreter eMovies Extra on WEDNESDAY at 08:00 PM The Interpreter is a 2005 political thriller film directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn, Catherine Keener, and Jesper Christensen. It is notable for being the first film shot inside the United Nations Headquarters, as well as the final feature film directed by Pollack before his death in 2008. The plot is as follows - In the Southern African country of Matobo, rebel leader Ajene Xola drives two men, Simon Broome and Philippe, to the abandoned Centennial Football Stadium. They discuss how President Edmond

Zuwanie's regime has ruthlessly exterminated most of the population and intimidated the survivors into silence. Upon their arrival at the stadium, they discover that the informants are schoolboys, who point Ajene and Simon in the direction of corpses left by Zuwanie's security apparatus, while Philippe stays in the car. Shouting lures Ajene and Simon back to the field, where they are promptly executed by the boys, who are revealed to be willing accomplices of Zuwanie's secret police. Upon hearing the gunshots, Philippe

clambers out of the car and hides, taking pictures of a car arriving carrying Matoban officials, and then escapes the vicinity. Meanwhile, Simon's sister Silvia Broome is working as an interpreter for the United Nations in New York City. A white African born in the United States to a British mother and white Matoban father, she spent most of her life in Matobo and is a dual citizen of both Matobo and the United States. Her diverse background leads to UN Security Chief Lee Wu wryly describing her as "being the UN".
