 By Lebohang Tlaba DOUGLAS: Mr. Gerhard Bruwer from Douglas in the Northern Cape was named the 17th winner of Agri SA's Young Farmer of the Year competition at a glittering event in Kempton Park on Thursday, 18 November. Bruwer farms with wheat, maize, potatoes, and lucerne. The Agri SA and Toyota’s New Harvest Producers of the Year were also announced at the event. Mrs. Beverly Joseph from George in the Western Cape walked away with the New Harvest Producers of the Year title this year. Among other things, Joseph farms with hops and has played a leading role in the development of new hops cultivars in collaboration with

the former South African Brewery (now AB InBev). Bruwer said the support of his community plays a big role in his farming. "I stand here thanks to the people around me who support me. We need to uplift each other. Let us all work together, forget about the politics and build an excellent country," Bruwer said. Joseph said she dedicates her award to all women in Agriculture. "We need to have hair on our teeth to thrive in an industry where men dominate. If an opportunity knocks at your door, be ready to invite it in for tea. I want to invite every woman in agriculture to keep herself ready for the moment when the opportunity comes knocking at her door," Joseph said.

FICKSBURG: This passing weekend it was all about cherries and having fun! Ionia Cherry Farm was blooming with tasty cherry madness! Ionia, situated near the town Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State is a division of Bloukruin Landgoed and consider themselves as job creators, food producers and an entity that enrich people's lives through tourism, but one’s a year right after the annual cherry crop, the Ionia Cherry Farm embark on a weekend of endless celebration. Ionia is most definitely not ‘the newkid-on-the-block’ when it comes to festivals. For several years they have hosted this event filled with sporting events, cherry tours, tasty food, drinks & treats, fun & games for the young ones, hand craft exhibitors and don’t forget about the world class live entertainment. After this weekend, the owners took it to social media and thanked the whole country for their support, writing: “What an amazing weekend! Thank you to all who made this weekend a big success! Thank you for all the support, the laughter and joy.” Visitors flew in as far as Cape Town to take part in what the weekend had to offer. Local accommodation was jam-packed and fully booked with visitors, and locals visited Ionia as part of their annual ritual of entertainment, from ‘sussie & boetie’ and ‘ouma & oupa’ was in the car ready to visit the event of the year.

Local Businessman and restaurant owner Gavin Boy from Ficksburg, treated guests with a scrumptious breakfast run just before they embarked on the festival.

Die jongspan kon die ure omkry op ‘n heerlike speelpark. Hierdié pragtige foto verkyn op IONIA se Facebook bladsy van die speelpark onder die maanlig. Ma en pa, oupa en ouma kon op ‘n opwindende kersie-toer gegaan het en met hulle terugkeer kon hulle houers vol heerlike kersies gekoop het!

TBS BROKERS GOLF DAY 2021

FICKSBURG: As a enthused event to the Cherry celebrations across the Eastern Free State The Ficksburg Golf Club recently had the privilege to, together with the cherry fever host the TBS Brokers Golf Day 2021 on Friday 19 November 2021. The day was a huge success with lots of entries and support. The weather also was exceptionally good for a Golf Day of this calibre. There was tons of prizes that players won for their golfing skills. TBS also offered a chance to win a 2 seat electric golf cart worth R50 000 for a hole in one.

CLOCOLAN: The Eastern Free State was filled with a cherry fever this weekend and the Constantia Cherry Farm was most definitely the place to be… (And it wasn’t just ‘fever’ from the effect of the exclusive cherry mampoer!). The Constantia Cherry Farm, a beautiful cherry farm in the Eastern Free State, between Clocolan and the Koranna mountains owned by the Higgo family, did not disappoint its visitors this year. Talking about the famous mampoer, some zing can be added to any gathering with this special cherry mampoer that is available on the farm – “add the Pienk Verdriet or Rooi Raps cherry liqueur to make it a party!” The event was filled with lots to do, like food stalls, fresh cherries and live entertainment by a barnyard style – concert by famous singer Demi-Lee Moore. Visitors also filled the hunger with a mouthwatering lamb-spit pita. One visitor on Facebook wrote: “Oh definitely... a must stop, lovely friendly staff lots of cherry products and tasters and highly recommend you have a bite to eat and a coffee. Will be back if we ever go that way again.”
