CHUCKLE The teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees, and minutes, the teacher asked, "Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, four minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude?" After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, "I guess you'd be eating alone."

Farmers on high alert as flood risks increase

Explosives found near Orania

PRIESKA | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK

For the second year in a row, South Africa is experiencing its wettest summer. Farmers in the Lower Orange River region are on stand-by as the risk of flooding increases. The Gariep Dam reached maximum capacity on December 17, overflowing, with the Vanderkloof Dam further north following two days later. Last week, the river’s flow past Prieska here in the Northern Cape was measured at 2,490 m3 per second, 300 m3/sec less than this time last year, when the Orange was at its highest level in recent times. The Vaal River, which runs into the Orange west of Douglas, is expected to cause a much higher level than usual running past Prieska towards the north-west regions of the Northern Cape.

ORANIA | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK

The SAPS have praised officials working in the Hopetown district here in the Northern Cape after they discovered a trove of illicit ammunition and explosives at a plot near Orania. A 48-year-old man was swiftly arrested recently. A court appearance beckons for the offender, as law enforcement officials try to uncover why the male suspect had such a large collection of illegal goods. Dozens of rounds of shotgun ammunition, more than 60 blanks, and even a trip flare were amongst the items found at the plot. The police were tipped off by a concerned member of the public, which led to the operation being carried out. It didn’t take the search team long to find what they were looking for. The SAPS confirmed all the major details in a recently released press statement. The suspect,

Pictures: SAPS

apprehended at the plot near Orania, has been charged with the illegal possession of ammunition and unauthorised explosives: “Lt Col Jooste and his members operationalised the information which led them to a plot near Orania. After searching the identified premises, Hopetown SAPS assisted by members of the De Aar Explosives unit discovered a trip flair, 41 rounds of shotgun ammunition, 61 blank rounds, and six rounds of .22 ammunition. A 48-year-old male was arrested and charged with illegal possession of ammunition and unauthorised explosives appeared in the Hopetown Magistrates’ court. SAPS will continue unabatedly to tighten the grip on crime. The police are urging the public to continue to provide information regarding any criminal activities.”

The upgrade to the Philipstown water supply applauded by authorities PHILIPSTOWN | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK Recently, the Renosterberg Municipality expressed their gratitude to the Longyuan Mulilo De Aar Wind Projects for their contributions and funding towards the Philipstown Water Supply Upgrade Project. This project was the first of three phases in the Philipstown Water Supply Upgrade Project undertaken by the Renosterberg Municipality. The Renosterberg Municipality approached Longyuan Mulilo to provide the funds to upgrade five existing boreholes as part of the first phase. The Water Upgrade Project commenced in September 2020, and all parties overcame the challenges and impact of COVID 19 to make the project successful and commissioned it in October 2021. After completion, the total groundwater abstraction in Philipstown has increased from 6.7 l/sec to 14.3 l/sec, an 113% increase in the original yield. Currently, the water demand for Philipstown is at 1 130 Kl per day. Before this upgrade, they could

only extract about 580 Kl per day, which did not meet the water demand in the community. Now with all five new pumps running, the total groundwater abstraction amounts to 1 236 Kl per day, meeting the daily water demand of the community adequately. Another significant advantage of this upgrade project is that the power consumption from the boreholes pumps has been reduced quite significantly by supplying the pumps with renewable solar energy during the day, thereby saving operational costs. Besides funding the upgrading of the five boreholes, Longyuan Mulilo also provided funds for the security fences around all borehole sites, installed new borehole monitoring equipment, made provision for a three-year maintenance program and created more than 20 temporary jobs as part of the mechanical and civil works undertaken. As the entire community of Philipstown receives water from these five

boreholes, all community members of Philipstown, Philipsvale, Lukhanyisweni and Rietfontein benefited as a result of these upgrades. The Renosterberg Municipality once again approached Longyuan Mulilo for additional contributions towards the second phase of their Water Supply Upgrade Project. Longyuan Mulilo agreed to fund the training of municipal staff and to provide remote monitoring equipment for the existing boreholes and reservoirs. “We see ourselves as part of the Renosterberg Municipality and are pleased to see the impact and value of our funding towards community projects, benefiting the local people of Renosterberg and surroundings. It is our obligation and responsibility to contribute and add more value towards the upliftment of the local community where we operate from", said Longyuan Mulilo management.

Els aangestel as Hoof van Nuus by Rekord CLOCOLAN | CORNé VAN NOORDWYK

EFF heads to court after its Mayor in Thembelihle was voted out NORHERN CAPE | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK

HEUNINGDRUPPELS | WILLEM BOTHA Omtrent so 10 of 12 jaar gelede was ons betrokke in ’n gewapende roof in ons huis. (Ps. 34:4-5)

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) here in the Northern Cape is heading to court after its Mayor at the Thembelihle Municipality was voted out by the African National Congress (ANC) and the Freedom Front Plus recently. The party says it views the move as illegal and wants the court to declare the sitting which appointed a new mayor null and void. The EFF mayor Leonard Makena was sworn in in November following the local government elections last year. EFF Provincial Chairperson Aubrey Baartman says they filed an urgent court interdict. “It is very clear that we will never accept this illegal and disruptive behaviour. We will take this matter on review and bring an urgent court interdict of making sure that this illegal meeting is declared null and void but also make sure that the municipality will function fully and deliver services to the community.”

Breakout of brown locusts to persist until May 2022 COLESBERG | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK Although good rainfall is associated with the natural breakout of brown locusts here in the semi- Karoo region, recent above-normal rainfall has exacerbated this common pest. Putting crops at risk as to the country braces for more summer rainfall in the coming weeks and months, AgriSA risk and disaster unit manager Andrea Campher said locusts only die out naturally when the first frosts set in around May. Various videos have emerged on social media of locust swarms spanning

kilometres spattering on the windscreens of drivers. The largest swarms are currently here in the south-eastern parts of the Northern Cape and at the border of the Eastern Cape and Free State provinces. Camper said the swarms of locusts have been flying here from the Northern Cape towards the Eastern Cape, reaching areas as far as Molteno. Colesberg, Middelburg, Graaff Reinet and Vensterstad seem to be bearing the brunt of the swarms.

‘Afrikaner’ town makes a call for skilled workers ORANIA | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK Love it or hate it, Orania is a community that refuses to budge. The all-whites Afrikaner enclave in the middle of the Northern Cape is no stranger to controversy – but that hasn’t stopped the town from flourishing. The population is growing here, as more jobs and homes continue to spring up in Orania. However, the CEO of the town isn’t ready to rest on any laurels just yet. Joost Strydom has published a message this week, which assesses what 2022 will look like for Orania. He has praised the deep-seated religious culture amongst the residents while lauding Otown’s low crime rates. However, there’s room for improvement, according to Strydom. As Orania expands, it will need to keep up with the rest of South Africa as it emerges from its pandemic slumber. That means there will soon be a need for more skilled workers here. Plumbers, engineers, and even legal experts will be required not just to accelerate Orania’s growth, but to ensure its survival too. Young Afrikaners – both inside and outside of the

town’s borders – are being urged to develop key skills. But character matters too, and Strydom has made it clear that anyone wanting to work and build a future for themselves in Orania must ‘excel in work ethic and discipline’. The future of Orania depends on COMPETENCE, its CEO insists… “Orania needs skilled workers and must compete with the rest of the country’s businesses and industries in terms of skills, work ethic, and thoroughness. Orania’s labour principle as a sustainable solution for Afrikaners can in no other way be ‘sold’ and explained to Afrikaners. This can only happen through performance.” “We want to establish a free Afrikaner home for our children’s children, we must develop the skill levels that can withstand the test of time. Young Afrikaners must study masonry, law, plumbing, engineering, arithmetic, science, the arts and much more. However, they must also excel in work ethic, discipline, and thoroughness.”

Progress being made to worldleading telescope near Carnarvon

Onnie word geluk gewens met nuwe aanstelling

Picture: Creamer Media

CARNARVON | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK The South African black-owned construction group Concor has reported on its progress in building the foundations and infrastructure for the MeerKAT extension project, which it is undertaking in conjunction with OptiPower. MeerKAT is South Africa’s world-leading radio telescope array (and also a precursor to the international Square Kilometer Array radio telescope programme), and the extension project involves the erection of 20 more dish antennas. The MeerKAT site is located here in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape province, some 90 km from our town of Carnarvon. The construction company started work on the site in September (2021). In addition to the foundations for the dishes, the project includes the construction of roads and other infrastructure. “With the piling rig on site, October saw our first piles drilled and concrete poured,” reported Concor contracts manager Stephan Venter. “Soft soil and sandy conditions require that the 20 foundations will be based on piles with a concrete cap; each of these foundations has eight piles of 750 mm diameter and between seven and eleven meters deep.” The MeerKAT is an extremely precise instrument. Consequently, the dishes,

including their foundations, have to be positioned with great accuracy. In particular, structures called ‘bolt cages’, to which the dish antenna pedestals are secured, have to be sited with an accuracy measured in fractions of a millimeter. (Each bolt cage is galvanised, with a height of 1.7 m and is constructed locally to specification.) “In addition to the accuracy, the foundations must ensure that the antennas can resist the force of winds, especially as the dish is a wide surface area,” he highlighted. “There is also no room for any vibration of the dish.” The construction crews must achieve all this while emitting the absolute minimum radio frequency interference (RFI). This is because RFI would not only disrupt the operation of the current MeerKAT array but could even damage its equipment, which is designed to detect extremely weak radio signals from deep in the universe. RFI can be generated by cell phones, electronics on vehicles and many other pieces of equipment and tools. “We have tested and modified all our on-site equipment to comply with the RFI limitations,” he assured. “This includes excavators, trucks, graders, compactors, telehandlers, water bowsers, TLBs and our specialised concrete batching truck.”

seisoen stoot 'n knop in jou keel. 6. In jou opinie kan die reuke van Dior, Chanel, of enige Franse parfuum, nie kersvashou by die reuk van die eerste somerreën óf 'n vars, omgeploegde land nie. 7. 8. Jy dra 'n Leatherman in jou handsak.

18. Jy weet jou man se "etensuur" is enigiets tussen 10:00 en 16:00. 20.

figure in Afrikaanse geledere. Terug by Zani wie se tong diep in Venter se keelgat wegraak. The head is darker with a crest on the top of the head. A bright yellow vent is visible. The eyes are dark, bill, legs and feet are black. A conspicuous orange to red eye ring surrounds the eye. This is a smallish bird at 20 cm, with males being slightly larger than females. Easily distinguished from the darkcapped bulbul by the red eye ring. AFRICAN RED-EYED BULBUL BREEDING African red-eyed bulbuls are monogamous. The female builds a cup nest, always well concealed in foliage, using dry grass and twigs. The two to 3 eggs are incubated for around 15 days. The Jacobin robin brood parasite the African red-eyed bulbul. CURRIE CUP 2022 ALL FIXTURES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE; VENUES AND KICK-OFF TIMES TO BE CONFIRMED

2021 CARLING CUP CHAMPIONS THE VODACOM BLUE BULLS

19 JANUARY

Carling Currie Cup kicks off this weekend

The Carling Currie Cup will kick off on the 14th January with a seven-team Premier Division, following an online meeting of the General Council of the South African Rugby Union. The Council rejected a proposal from Eastern Province that they be incorporated into the topflight immediately. However, Council approved a motion that the top South African team in the First

Division be automatically promoted to the Premier Division at the end of the 2022 Carling Currie Cup season, creating an eightteam Premier Division. In addition, the promoted team will be entrenched for two seasons (until the end of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup season) when the bottom team in the Premier Division will be automatically relegated in favour of the top South

African team in the First Division, which will also be entrenched for two seasons before promotion/relegation at the end of the 2026 season. The 2022 competition will kick off on the weekend of 14/15 January. The unusual kick off has been prompted by the realignment of the South African domestic rugby calendar to dovetail with the northern hemisphere season

Toyota Hilux GR Sport Revealed

Toyota is always keen to point out its Dakar successes with the Hilux and this tough offroad race serves as the inspiration for the all-new Toyota Hilux GR Sport. The popular bakkie has never been slack in the offroad department, but the Toyota Hilux GR Sport is more capable. There’s an upgraded suspension system featuring monotube shock absorbers, new front springs, automatic limited-slip differential and active traction control. There are also upgrades to the vibration and noise countermeasures.

Toyota Europe has confirmed the launch of the new Hilux GR Sport. With inspiration straight from Toyota Gazoo Racing, this looks to be the sportiest Hilux to date. Toyota claims these upgrades ‘ deliver significant improvements in handling characteristics, including steering effort and steering angle response, straight-line performance, a flat ride and reassuring roll and rear grip feel.’ As far as visual changes go, the Toyota Hilux GR Sport features a black front grille with G-pattern mesh and a classic-looking Toyota emblem. There are new larger front fog light surrounds, 17-inch alloy wheels which are

black and machined and wrapped in all-terrain tyres. There is black detailing on the door mirror casings, side steps, tailgate handle and over-fenders. The shocks and springs are finished in red and there are subtle GR Sport badges. It’s more subtle than the Thai-built wild Revo Hilux shown in 2021. Inside, the cabin gains sports seats finished in black leather and synthetic suede with red perforations and contrast stitching. There’s GR Sport

branding on the seats, carpets, starter button and dashboard graphics. There are also aluminium pedals, carbon fibre-style trim and a red insert across the dashboard. Now if you’re expecting an engine upgrade, remember this is a GR Sport model, not a pure GR so the focus here is on a sportier drive and look. The current 2.8 engine offers plenty of go in any case with 150 kW and 500 Nm, paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. – Source: cars.co.za
