WORLD CHAMPION BOER GOAT RAM SOLD FOR R500 000 The world champion boer goat ram, ‘Maserati’, sold for a record price of R500 000.  Courtesy of Farmer’s Weekly GRIEKWASTAD: The World Champion Boer goat ram, ‘Maserati’, bred by the Lukas Burger Boer Goat stud in Griekwastad, was recently sold for a record price of R500 000 to Salmon van Huyssteen Boer Goats and the Joubert Horn Boer Goat Stud. Burger said it was not the highest price ever paid for a Boer goat, as he had since heard about Boer goats selling for more than US$46 000 (over R681 000) in the US. It nevertheless broke the previous South African private sale record of R450 000, which Burger set about four years ago with a ram called ‘Tolla’. Burger also holds the record for the highest auction price paid for a Boer goat ram, which he achieved when he sold ‘Klein Booster’ for R375 000 to Boeram Venter of Kirkwood at the stud’s 22nd production sale last year. At the farm’s recent production auction, the highest bid was R290 000 for a ram, while the average price was R36 900 for rams and R31 500 for ewes. Burger said prices of Boer goats had been growing steadily over the past four years, primarily because of growing international recognition of the exceptional quality of their meat. Burger said, “South Africa is not exporting any meat as we are struggling to supply enough goat’s meat to stock local shops. Most of the meat is sold to the informal market [in] KwaZulu-Natal. Nevertheless,

live goats and genetic material are exported to various countries. The markets in Namibia and Botswana have been closed due to [South Africa’s] foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, but India and Thailand are still open.” Burger added that many farmers were building stock levels thanks to improved climatic conditions, and some game farmers, who had been negatively affected by COVID19 lockdown measures, were switching to goat production, as they already had good fencing, which was a prerequisite for goat farming. Joubert Horn, who co-bought ‘Maserati’, said prices of goodquality Boer goat ewes and rams had increased greatly over the past few years due to growing international demand for Boer goat genetics. “The fact that Van Huyssteen and I bought the ram together, will help to ease the cost while being a great investment in the future for both our studs and presenting great learning and marketing opportunities for both of us,” said Horn. Twenty “matings” by ‘Maserati’ will be auctioned off at the Xtreme Genetics auction, which Horn will host in November in collaboration with Huyssteen, Stafford Collen and Albie Horn. “Farmers will be able to choose whether they want to bring their ewes to the farm for mating, [or buy] straws for artificial insemination,” Horn concluded.

(Matt. 14:14) Mag Hy dit vir jou ook doen.

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you.

– Matthew 6:14

TWO MEN APPEARED IN COURT FOR RAPING A MINOR

ARCHIVE - Breipaal community members vowed to kill rape suspect if he gets bail, 19 June 2019. Picture: Norma Wildenboer

Two men were arrested for allegedly raping an 8-year-old girl.  By Lebohang Tlaba DOUGLAS: A 29-year-old man and his accomplice recently appeared in the Douglas Magistrates' Court following the rape of an eightyear-old girl. It is understood the little girl was playing with her friends near a dumping site in the Breipaal area, here in Douglas on Tuesday, 21 September. The two men in question allegedly chased the little girl while playing with her friends and grabbed her. It is reported that the suspects allegedly raped the 8-year-old girl after grabbing her. The little girl’s friends managed to run away in search of help. The police subsequently traced and arrested both suspects. The South African Police (SAPS) Spokesperson, Olebogeng Tawana said, “The victim's friends managed to run away and report the incident to their parents. The suspect was subsequently traced and apprehended.” The Magistrate Court has postponed the case. "Their

case has been postponed to the 18th of October for a formal bail application," said Mojalefa Senokoatsane, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). The suspects will remain in custody until their next court date. The investigation remains underway. In an unrelated incident, the SAPS Provincial Organised Crime Detectives arrested a 30-yearold male for the murder of Klaas Small (27). On 27 January 2021, the body of the deceased was discovered by a passer-by in a didge in Breipaal, Douglas. The police followed up on information on Wednesday, 29 September 2021, at about 13:30 and arrested a male suspect at his house in Breipaal, Douglas. It is alleged that the murder could be connected to insurance fraud and more arrests could follow. The suspect is expected to appear in the Douglas Magistrates' Court soon. The investigation continues.

Wake up, get up…and do something today! One of my African friends, aged in his late 20’s, posted this on his Facebook Timeline. It touched me and got me very motivated, so I thought I will share it with our readers: “Some of our parents got their job at the age of 40, some enrolled at university at the age of 30, some learned how to drive and even bought their first car at the age of 50, some of our aunts got married in their early 40's, others started building their dream house at the age of 50.Our former president Nelson Mandela became the president at the age of 75...and You are only 19-38 years old and You think You have failed in life? Huh! Get up and chase that dream. Get that certificate, diploma or degree. Keep on sending those CV's and business proposals. Keep on hustling. It always seems impossible until it's done. Stop counting on other people's achievements and start working on your own. Never mind what people say because they'll always have something negative to say no matter what You do. My brothers and sisters...Go get your ticket to a brighter future. God Bless You.”

Blom waar jy geplant is. Dimakatso en haar man bly by Koppies se ashoop. Wegsmytgoed is hul skatte. My ma bewonder hul nederige herwinde skuiling. Eintlik 'n pondok. Dimakatso bly lekker. Dis my ma wat omgee. Smell the roses.

FEELING A LITTLE LUMP IN YOUR THROAT? FAST EASY FACTS ABOUT THYROID CANCER Shaped like a butterfly, an average of 4 cm wide and sits just below the Adam’s apple. Nodules or growths on the thyroid are quite common and most are benign (not harmful). It’s a small gland at the back of a neck that produces hormones that regulate one’s mood, temperature, body metabolisms and other important processes. According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), only 7-15% of thyroid nodules are malignant and about 50% of people over the age of 40 have a thyroid nodule. It is still very much more common in women than in men, considered also sometimes to be hereditary and thyroid cancer most commonly manifests between the ages of 35 and 65. (SANOFI, 2021) It is treatable, even curable… There are a variety of different treatments for thyroid cancer, however, it is all dependent on the tumour size and how far it has spread. If detected early and treated in due time, thyroid cancer patients have a longterm survival rate. The estimated burden of thyroid cancer for South Africa for 2018 according to Globocan estimates (sanofi.co.za) are as follows. - the annual number of thyroid cancer cases is 2408, whereas - the annual number of deaths is 157. These treatments which include surgery, radioiodine therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy are usually successful. The recovery rate is considered to be very high. It’s non-fatal and almost isn’t ever diagnosed because of its least checked common body area – the neck. (Healthline, 2021) “I didn’t know it was there!” Although signs and symptoms aren’t always common, it is always a good idea to feel around your neck. A general check-up with your doctor is due if you experience any of the following: A lump in your neck, hoarse voice, difficulty in breathing/swallowing or just a typical pain in your throat. Other symptoms may include neck pain that may radiate up to your ears or a persistent cough not caused by illness. Risk factors include stress, pregnancy, and smoking. The most common way for diagnosis is through CT scans, neck ultrasounds and blood tests. An easy DIY neck examination in the comfort of your home is explained in the video below: (ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivor's Association, Inc., 2013).

■ CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS 2021 – WHY VOTE? Municipal Elections will take place on 1 November 2021, but what’s in it for you, and why is it so important that you vote – even during a pandemic!

A voting station in South Africa. (Photo: GovernmentZA)

THERE ARE A FEW VERY IMPORTANT REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE: 1) It’s your Constitutional responsibility: While South Africa doesn’t have compulsory voting like some other countries, our Constitution gives citizens’ rights along with responsibilities. Chapter 1, Section 3 of the Constitution says that all citizens are equally entitled to the rights, privileges and benefits of citizenship and equally subjected to the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. A crucial responsibility given to all citizens over 18 years old is to participate in our democracy! 2) Vote to have a say who is elected public representative in your city, town and area. If you don’t vote you won’t have a say in who is elected to lead your city or town: Elections are a chance for ordinary citizens to come together to determine democratically who is elected as their representative on the municipal council – and what key issues they are going to promote for the next five years. If you don’t participate, others are going to choose for you! 3) Democracy and democratic political rights were hardearned rights the world over, but in South Africa, it was the liberation struggles that achieved equality for all. People died so you can vote: Until just 27 years ago, the majority of South African citizens were denied the right to vote and have any say in how the country was run. Many thousands of people died, were beaten, tortured and jailed for demanding the right to vote – a right you enjoy today! Have more questions? ■ MARTHA NOEBEL

WHAT’S YOUR RETIREMENT PLAN?

So, just quietly … let me ask you, what do you have planned for the rest of your life? Most of us don’t really know how long we have left on this earth. So what do you want to do, to achieve? How do you want to live out your final years, days? They’re interesting questions, aren’t they? For the most part, people end up planning a retirement, hopefully stashing away enough to be comfortable. Of course, that’s not an option for everyone. Others worry about being destitute, hoping to rely on their family for support. But the desire for security is pretty much a universal one. And in many cultures, my own included, that morphs very quickly and very easily into a desire to be comfortable, which of course means a desire to be rich. One of the things you notice about many a retiree is that their world has become very narrow. I hadn’t noticed that until a financial planner with many older clients pointed it out to me. But there’s a lot of truth in that observation, and it’s not pretty. Can that really be what God has planned for the rest of your days? Or is there perhaps an alternative? 2 Corinthians 8:9 You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. You know that he gave up his heavenly riches for you. He gave up everything so that you could be richly blessed. Jesus turns our tendency towards selfish comfort and security completely on its head. He gave up everything so that we could be richly blessed. And again, by observation, I can tell you that those older folk who continue to live with the aim of serving others, blessing others, sacrificing for others, tend to lead a much richer life than those who focus on themselves. So let me ask you again … what do you have planned for the rest of your life? That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
