Test Valley Businesses start their Recruitment Pipeline... ...with Secondary School Students Over 58 businesses in Test Valley gave up their time to work with EBP South (Inc. Basingstoke Consortium) to encourage over 350 secondary school students to consider the different careers available to them in their local area at the virtual Get Inspired Test Valley event.

The Get Inspired events run by EBP South provide young people with an interactive way to explore the businesses on their doorstep and the different careers available to them.

Rachel Parker, Project Manager of EBP South said, “There are many different local employers and job roles that students have never heard of and Get Inspired helps to identify these future career opportunities.

The business-led activities highlight the skills employers are looking for and encourage students to aspire to the different job roles they can do within their local area.

Importantly, businesses attending these events are engaging with their future employees from an early age and are able to attract and develop local talent to ensure their industry doesn’t experience skills gaps later on.”

The event is considered an important part of businesses’ recruitment pipeline as research has shown that one-third of 15–16-year-olds career aspirations are in just ten jobs. This event gives businesses the opportunity to showcase job roles to students in a practical way.

David Drew, Councillor at Test Valley Council said, “Helping young people to think about their future careers is so important and I am very grateful to EBP South (Education Business Partnership) and for all of the schools and employers who have made Get Inspired, our first online careers event, such a success. Naturally, I am especially pleased that four Test Valley

schools and 13 Test Valley businesses, including my own borough council, took part.

The world of work is changing fast, and I am keen that Test Valley Borough Council will continue to support this vital connection between our places of learning and our local employers. Onwards and upwards for an exciting event at The Army Flying Museum next time!”

The Get Inspired Test Valley Live event sponsored by Test Valley Borough Council and Simplyhealth took place on Thursday 29th April 2021 and was streamed live into five schools which all took part in one business-led activity followed by a Q&A session with professionals. In total over 20 businesses and 29 professionals supported the live event.

It’s a great opportunity for students to hear directly from employers on a variety of job roles and the skills needed to be successful. Statement Statham Actor Jason Statham on an all-action career that continues to thrive.

Jason Statham returns to our screens in 2021 with one, perhaps two new movies. Spy 2 – the follow-up to the 2015 original – is testament to the actor pursuing a more comedic line of drama as he moves into his fifties, while Wrath of Man delivers a steely, police-driven drama that sees our main man fully back in combat mode.

“This is what I do, and I’m proud of that,” he says. “I keep myself in shape, I deliver in my roles and I move on to the next thing.

“I will always commit fully to a project, which is why I’ve always done my own stunts over the years. I think if you’re going to be that person and that character, then embrace it fully.”

For so long, Statham has been the perfect blend of smouldering, moody, confident and confrontational. He has styled his own persona very much around the types

of characters he plays in Hollywood blockbusters.

Yet whether a gun-toting criminal on the streets of London, a Bond-esque spy circumnavigating the globe, or simply the man who performs wheelspins better than even Vin Diesel, Statham, who is married to model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is constantly striving for the next big one. Yet would he ever stray away from the action genre… could he ever perhaps entertain something as leftfield as, say, a period drama?

“Listen, the guys who put that stuff together make very good films,” he laughs. “I mean, the attention to detail is incredible, and the scriptwriting is on another planet. I just don’t know if they’re going to offer me a part in one of those films!

“That said, I don’t have the refusal wall up for anything, I’m

open to all quality stuff, if somebody wants to send a great romantic comedy my way, I’ll be the first to read it.”

So it seems that Statham the action man will continue for a good while longer. “That’s just the type of actor I am. I would struggle to do the cerebral, emotional stuff – that’s not to say I’m not like that at home, and around the people I love, but it’s true, I do have a certain image on film now and I’m happy with that.”

It’s an image brought about by his father’s incredible encouraging spirit, and harnessed through his attempts to qualify for the Olympics as an expert diver.

“I came third in three Olympic trials, I came close. So close.

Every board qualifies the first two divers so I was just short three times.”

The fact he has excelled in a totally different profession is not just consolation, but testament to Statham’s drive to achieve. Job done.

Councillor’s Column My grateful thanks go to the doctors, nurses, surgery staff and many volunteers who are continuing to work flat out delivering the vaccination programme. At the time of writing over 77% of Test Valley residents have now received their first jab and crucially, over 53% are now fully vaccinated. Whilst there is concern about the Indian variant, the vaccinations are working. There have been no hospital admissions over the last 7-days and no deaths. Actually, according to the government website there hasn’t been a death in Test Valley within 28-days of a positive test since the 7th of March. Again, at time of writing, the decision on implementing the next phase of roadmap to recovery has not yet been made, the key – even if there is a short delay - is to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible. Please do encourage everyone you know who is not yet vaccinated to get the jab when they get the call. At Test Valley’s Annual Council meeting recently, I reiterated our commitment to regenerating our town centres following the adoption of masterplans for both Romsey and Andover town centres last year. In Romsey, we are proceeding apace with the ‘quick wins’ voted by stakeholders to Romsey Future, improving the link between Sterling Walk and Broadwater Road and bringing forward plans for creating a feature of Fishlake Stream. In Andover, it was great to see so many people enjoying the new Riverside Park at Town Mills as I welcomed the Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council, Rob Humby and the Local Enterprise Partnership’s Head of Infrastructure, Kevin Travers to Andover recently to celebrate its completion. By showing them the fruits of our collective labour, I’m sure that the success at Town Mills will add further momentum to our ongoing conversa14

tions about the delivery of the wider project. Further enhancing the river corridor and redeveloping the Chantry Centre. A key element of the masterplan is also the proposed extension to Vigo Rec. Which I want to encourage people to enjoy, perhaps more frequently than they do currently. To that end, we have recently launched a consultation to understand how Vigo Park is being used now and what would attract residents to use it more frequently. Over the next few months, we’ll be engaging with clubs, schools, community groups and disability forums to help gain views ahead of forming a management plan and possible additions to the site. Finally, I’m relieved to have been notified by the Minister recently that the Home Office has formally dropped plans for a temporary immigration centre at Barton Stacey.

Ever since this site was first put forward in November last year, local MP, Caroline Nokes and I have consistently made the case to government that this type of accommodation in this location is completely inappropriate. After initially suggesting a decision would be made in a matter of weeks, the Home Office had to carry out much more detailed work after we raised serious concerns about highway safety and habitats regulations amongst other strong arguments against it. I’m delighted that the Home Office has now concluded what we suggested all along, that this site is not a viable option.

QUIRKY FACTS

Of course with debates about international travel and the stress of where to holiday, might Hampshire, our own beautiful county, be the best place to enjoy some well earned time off and hopefully soak up the sun? Here’s five more interesting facts from around Hampshire which might just provide some staycationing inspiration!

Did you know that the only pony to have competed at Olympic level showjumping is buried in Hampshire? Stroller, a bay gelding, stood at only 14.1 hands high and as such was classified as a pony. Remarkably, Stroller not only competed to this standard but, ridden by jumping star Marion Coakes (later known as - Marion Mould) who won medals in prestigious competitions across the world even past the age of 20!

The pony lived to the grand old age of 36 and is buried at the Barton on Sea golf club which was previously Marion Coakes’ farm.

Perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings, did you know that a certain Hampshire country house was said to have inspired JRR Tolkien to write his masterpiece?

The Vyne at Basingstoke has on display a special golden ring with Latin inscriptions which Tolkien was asked to evaluate in 1929, owing to his expertise in related fields. It is said that it was after this visit to The Vyne and a viewing of its precious ring that Tolkien would later publish The Hobbit in 1937!

In any case, young writing minds may well enjoy an inspirational visit to this historic Hampshire gem!

Originally built to help safeguard the harbour from the ever-looming threat of attack from French ships, its predecessor was a strictly wooden affair until it was recognised that the longstanding stone was a safer option. Even in the early 15th century, the Round Tower cost thousands and reportedly during Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, all the ships that utilised the surrounding waters were required to donate a boatful of stones to help protect the tower from the waters or else risk a fine!

Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common.

If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. BUT should the surviving partner need care in the future, the Local Authority can take everything they own (including their home) to pay for the care fees, leaving just £14,250 to be inherited by children and grandchildren.

There is an alternative.

Nowadays many couples choose to own their home as Tenants in Common where each partner will own 50% of the family home. This provides for many benefits.

Firstly, it allows you to legally leave your share of the property in your Will to whoever you wish.

A properly written Will can ensure that your half of your house will eventually pass to your children even if your widow re-marries.

Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure.

It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care.

This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Complete guide to composting To get your compost really producing the type of nutrient-rich humus that will bring lawns, beds and green areas flourishing back to life, here are a few useful tips.

Carbon vs nitrogen Getting the balance between these two correct will ultimately define just how good your compost is. Carbon matter includes. It is this carbon layer that will give your compost space, lightness and a fluffy consistency.

Nitrogen-heavy matter, on the other hand, includes food waste, manure and kitchen waste, and provides a heavier, protein-rich presence.

For the best compost, aim for one-third carbon (branches, stems, wood, paper bags, coffee filters, egg shells, wood ash and more) versus twothirds nitrogen (food waste, manure and kitchen scraps, which provide a heavier, protein-rich presence).

A few don’ts Don’t put meat, bones or fish scraps in your compost. Not only will they smell, they’ll also attract pests and you’ll soon

find yourself clearing up the remnants of foxes, cats and other night roamers.

Obviously it’s smart to keep weeds or diseased plants away from your mix; while beware banana peels and orange rinds, as these may contain pesticide residues.

Straw law Many believe straw is the secret weapon where composting is concerned. It’s a great way to ensure a good carbon/nitrogen balance, whilst adding oxygen space. You can also cut out some of the labour-heavy turning (see below) if you have a respectably high straw content.

Getting started Find a space on bare earth so that worms and other organisms are able to access and aerate your compost, all the while transferring it into your beds.

Lay twigs or straw down, then begin to build your compost layer by layer, remembering your carbon and nitrogen mix, and ensuring plenty of gaps are left in between levels so that oxygen can work its magic.

Watering the compost can be a good idea, and covering the top with a sheet will help it retain moisture and heat, as well as preventing it from becoming drenched by downpours of rain.

Is the air there?

The big requirement for composting is oxygen, and its ability to find a route through the kitchen and yard waste you are disposing of; therefore aerate using a shovel once a week.

Spreading When you have accessed your compost, spread at thickness of up to one inch before adding a wood mulch layer to lock in all that nutrient-rich goodness.

Your plants, lawns and produce will love the benefits and your garden will be a more beautiful and productive entity because of it.

What an amazing road, lined with beautiful beech trees, all with amazingly shaped, knotted and knarled trunks and branches. An utter feeling of grandeur and decadence but also knowledge, respect and stability.

These trees are steeped in history.

If only they could talk! Daichi passed each tree in excitement and wonder.

He loves historic places of interest.

We parked in the National Trust car park and gazed at the circular clump of trees, chomping cows and rolling hills surrounding us, as we munched our food in the comfort of Daichi’s ‘diner’. What is great about a campervan is that you can park almost anywhere and have a full 360 degree view of your surroundings whether it is raining or sunny. You can have a picnic at a table, you don’t have to wait for one to be free, and you don’t have to ‘lug’ all the heavy bags to where you are going. It is all there for you, in the cupboard, knives, forks, spoons and even plates.

Of course, that is where the Iron Age got its name from, as it is the era of iron. The average life expectancy of these people was just 25! No wonder they seemed to have a spirit of fun and frolic – better make the most of the short life they had, I say. They were also ruled by Warrior

Now, it is purported that there is the ghost of a Warrior King who haunts these hills, but maybe that was visioned after a whisky or two… who knows… Daichi prefers that spirit to the ghostly one!

We could see the Isle of Wight in the far distance, Kingston Lacy House, that once owned the Rings and a Chinook helicopter flew right overhead.

There were birds of prey swooping around and wonderful looking fungi on stumps of trees lying flat on the ground. How amazing to see so many different things all in one place. It is ideal for the young and old alike. Great to run madly around to tire out those youngsters, or wander slowly for us oldies. Badbury Rings is an easy place to get to if you want some space and a bit of an historical atmosphere. There is the poppy field not far away too, at this time of year. Daichi left with a smile on his bonnet. Where will he take us next month I wonder…?

Sun Savvy Your guide to protecting your skin throughout the warmer months.

Preparation If you want to be sun savvy, then preparation is the key.

Just as you wouldn’t leave a new-born in the sun without protection, your own skin is also more vulnerable after a winter spent locked inside, which is why wearing a good SPF is vital.

Fortunately, many makeup and skincare brands now include sunscreen in their moisturisers and foundations, making it far easier to include facial protection in your day-to-day routine - it may seem like a strange concept to wear sun cream throughout the year, but ultraviolet rays are always present and penetrate clouds.

Cost As with most things in life you get what you pay for, and it really is worth investing in some top-notch sun protection.

Firstly, it is important to understand what the SPF factor means. Contrary to popular

belief, a higher SPF doesn’t mean that a factor 50 offers a higher level of protection than say, a factor 15. This is because the SPF number tells you how much longer it will take for your skin to burn than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen at all. So if you’re wearing 50 SPF, it will take 50 times longer for your skin to turn red than if you weren’t wearing it.

Secondly, make sure your sunscreen offers ‘broadspectrum protection’ rather than just SPF which only measures your skin’s ability to block UVB rays – these rays damage the outer layers of your skin and can cause sunburn and even blistering.

Broad spectrum products, however, also protect your skin from UVA rays which are the more insidious of the two as they penetrate your skin at a deeper level and are proven to

contribute to the development of skin cancer.

Be individual Be sure to choose a sunscreen that is tailored to your individual needs. If you have sensitive skin or want to use it on your face, then invest in a product that is sympathetic to those needs.

Or if the sun cream is for your children who are spending the day by the pool, make sure it is waterproof and easy to apply.

Be realistic While sunscreen works wonders, there are areas it cannot protect, such as your scalp and your eyes. If you’re not a hat person you may want to consider a head scarf or bandana, and when it comes to your eyes, well… who doesn’t look cool in a pair of sunglasses?

For really scorching summer days you may want to consider avoiding the sun altogether; and remember, there is no such thing as a safe suntan!

Let’s Get Wild Turn your garden into a veritable paradise for the birds and the bees by creating a wildflower meadow. Simple, environmentally beneficial and stunningly beautiful.

Not only is it easy to create your own little wildflower meadow, it’s also fast, meaning that any patch of land you have bare can be germinated in a matter of months. That means you could be gazing out over a carpet of poppies, cornflowers, daisies, cowslips and bluebells as summer draws to a close.

Perennial flowers will flourish in uncultivated soil, whereas cornfield flowers will do better in richer earth. You can buy ready-mixed seeds which will be tailored to certain variables such as soil containing heavy clay, boggy land by the pond’s edge, or even seeds that are specifically combined to provide the maximum nourishment to bees – such pollinators include Sunflower, Borage, Evening Primrose and Corn Marigold.

Make sure you thoroughly weed the soil before scattering your seeds - you need 1g per square metre of pure wildflower seeds and 5g per square metre of grass and wildflower meadow seeds – and ensure the earth remains consistently moist thereafter.

Hemp Agrimony This noble native perennial looks rather striking when grown amid other more colourful wildflower varieties.

Preferring the shade, it grows tall and untamed and provides a delectable nectar for butterflies.

Ox-eye Daisies Tall and gracious, these white and yellow beauties are easy to grow – they thrive in the sun – though they can also overwhelm a plot if not kept in check.

Cornflowers Cornflowers bring a touch of exotic elegance to your flowerbed. Surprisingly hardy, they flower from late spring into brilliant white flowers with deep purple stamens that bees, unsurprisingly, find irresistible.

Common Knapweed Though some may view it as a pest, this nonetheless brings its own rugged loveliness to your wildflower crop and also will

provide food for birds if seed heads are left over winter.

Honeysuckle With its vibrant white, pink and yellow petals and unusually long tendrils, one might be forgiven for thinking this a flower from another planet, but this fragrant bloom is as British and as iconic as they come.

British Hedgehog

Hedgehogs - Written by Nicky Rowberry Preservation Society Hedgehogs were voted Britain’s Favourite Wild Mammal, but despite that they are in trouble and numbers have been declining. The decline is so bad that they’ve recently been classified as “Vulnerable to Extinction”.

Often referred to as the “gardener’s friend”, most of us are thrilled to spot one in the garden, but it’s becoming an increasingly rare sight.

• Thankfully it’s not all doom and gloom and there are lots of ways to help. Here’s a few ideas: • Create 13cm square gaps in your fence as a ‘hedgehog highway’ and ask your neighbours to do the same.

• Offer meaty cat, dog or hedgehog food, or some cat biscuits alongside a bowl of water at night.

• Make your garden wildlife friendly – don’t use slug pellets or pesticides and leave one corner “a bit wild”.

• Create a log pile in your garden, to provide natural shelter and food – don’t disturb it. Or maybe put out a hedgehog house.

• Check for hedgehogs before strimming or mowing & check compost heaps before sticking a big fork in there too!

• If you’ve got a pond, make sure hedgehogs can get out if they fall in.

Create sloping edges, or failing that provide ramps or steps up.

Why not become a Hedgehog Champion? Hedgehog Street is run by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society in partnership with the People’s Trust for Endangered Species. Just go to www.hedgehogstreet.org and sign up – it’s free and you’ll get access to lots of hedgehog information.

If you see any hedgehogs out during the day looking lethargic, wobbly, injured or covered in flies, they need urgent help. Get them indoors into a big deep box. Keep them somewhere calm and quiet until you can get help.

Put an old towel in the box and ideally a warm wrapped hot water bottle – with enough space so that they have room to get off the hot water bottle if they get too hot. Stockbridge Walk

Start here This is a very low key walk that anyone can do, no need for walking boots or wellies … just a smile! This is a short walk, some people are back at work, as this walk will take about an hour and is about 3 miles.

I parked the car at the ‘White Hart Inn’, because I wanted a sneaky lunch after my walk. I turned left up into the town as I wanted to see what shops there were … well you will be in for a nice surprise, there are selection of food / wine and clothes shops to browse round and very pretty cottage shops.

Carry on along past the little river up to the end of the town, cross over where there are two clothes shops. It’s so lovely to see independent shops.

Hopefully they are fully supported by the locals. Go past the Church and cross over to the gorgeous garden shop, where there is a footpath sign. This is very narrow and the little river, I am sure, will flood if there has been too much rain.

The wonderful views will unfold … absolutely, beautiful, green countryside.

Go over the wooden bridge and take in the spectacular views. The day I did this walk, was very sunny and dry so I just wore trainers however, I am sure that it could become quite boggy in places.

I definitely would feel safe walking by myself, this walk is part of The National Trust and I have to say, that I have seen so many Swans on my walks this year … and now with their signets.

Carry straight on over another wooden bridge, it really is quite spectacular.

Just walking with the River Test beside you is so beautiful. I just had to stop at the little opening of water, which is very shallow and crystal clear. I can imagine dogs going in and having a drink. It’s so, so pretty.

If you look over, you’ll see the large house on your left. I followed the marsh up to the top and started walking back. Half way down, there is a footpath sign and if you follow that it will take you to Timsbury. If you follow that walk, it would be about 7 miles. If you want the shorter walk, carry on down until you reach the gate and turn left.

I always take my hand sanitiser because of Covid. This is a tiny track path, very pretty.

When you reach the end you can look forward to your lunch or dinner and drink at the pub.

I have to say that there are a few lovely restaurants and cafes in Stockbridge, so you can enjoy any of them and I decided after lunch to do a little retail therapy!

I hope that you enjoy this walk as much as I did!

No-Knead Bread Introduction

When Sullivan Street Bakery owner Jim Lahey came up with this recipe for no-knead bread – published in The New York Times in 2009 – it caused quite the stir. Surely something so simple couldn’t yield the kind of flavourful crust and airy middle we expect to buy from an artisan baker?

Well, just give it a try and see for yourself…

Ingredients

Makes one loaf

• 3 cups of all-purpose flour (405g or 14.3oz) • 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt • 1/2 teaspoon of instant yeast • 1 1/2 cups/350ml of room temperature water

Top Tips • If you don’t have a cast-iron pot, you can improvise using a pizza stone and an upturned stainless-steel bowl, as maintaining a high temperature is essential for creating that desirable crust, you will need something to trap warm air around your bread.

• Don’t worry if you need to leave your dough to rise longer than the stated time. Up to 24 hours is fine as it is this waiting time that allows the yeast to ferment and create air bubbles without kneading.

• Don’t be afraid to improvise.

Wait until the bread has cooled before tucking in: this is essential to creating the perfect loaf.

Method 1. In a bowl combine flour, yeast and salt. Add 350ml water and stir until blended; the dough will be shaggy and sticky. Cover the bowl with cling film, then let the dough rest for at least 12 hours, and preferably up to 18, at warm room temperature.

When the dough is ready it will be dotted with bubbles.

2. Lightly flour a surface and fold your dough one or twice before covering and resting once more for 15 minutes.

Using a little flour gently shape it into a ball. Then coat a tea towel with flour and put the dough seam-side down. Cover with another towel and let it
