Hello Bournemouth! I am now really sure that the water “shortage” should be well handled. Bring back the sun! We have a couple of celebrity interviews this month that should make interesting reading. Hear from Christine Bleakley on her new workout regime and Sir Richard Branson on his secrets to success. I am looking for local people’s celebrations so that we can wish you Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary or drool over the photo of your new baby. It will be a new feature in our forthcoming issues and could be a great way to wish someone a Happy Day! Also if you have a group or club you would like everyone to know more about please email your data to us. There may be many people who would love to know about you or can give some help. If you have done something good or really worth while I can also promote that for you too. We all like to hear good news! If you have any suggestions or ideas for these pages then please let me know. In the meantime do keep our advertisers busy. They like that. Many are very happy with all the calls they get from you. The Bournemouth Directory is definitely a great way to link local people and trades people together. Wishing you a great month of July… and may the sun shine! Best Wishes,

Debbie

Interview with Sire Richard Branson

8

www.facebook.com/BournemouthDirectory

If I Were a Rich Man Sir Richard Branson is back with another peek into the world of the UK’s most celebrated business brain. For one of the richest men in the country, Richard Branson is about as normal a bloke as you could ever wish to meet. The chairman of the Virgin Group may have built up a personal fortune of $1.4billion over four decades - in doing so making him one of the most recognisable figures in the UK. But speaking to the 61-year-old is not how you would imagine conversing with one of the world’s most famous businessmen. “I believe in living life to the full, making the most of every single day,” Branson says in his unfailingly positive tone. “I just live for the moment, which is a cliché but it is true. I have a great life. I would be a bit sad if I didn’t make the most of it, wouldn’t I?” Branson is not wrong when he says he has a great life - you just have to look at his 74-acre Necker Island home that he shares with wife Joan to recognise that this is a man who goes by the maxim ‘work hard/play hard’. “It is my favourite place in the entire world. It was love at first sight as soon as I saw it all those years ago. It’s like being on holiday when I’m there because it is

BD July 2012 page 8

Sir Richard Branson such a wonderful setting and there are always parties going on. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.” Of course, the luxury has been hardearned – the rewards of positive thinking and decisive decision-making; both outstanding trademarks of Branson’s extraordinary career. From humble beginnings – Branson left school at 15 with no qualifications – he has built up a worldwide conglomerate that now has over 400 companies. Having enjoyed huge successes with products rangin g from airlin es to trainlines, mobile phones to the internet, Branson is considered the oracle on all things business. And happily for budding entrepreneurs, he has revealed his secrets in a new book Like a Virgin:

Find us online at www.thebournemouthdirectory.co.uk Secrets They Won’t Teach you at Business School. “I get sent so many questions from people – via text, via email, via tweet – that it is impossible for me to get back to everyone, so I thought I would answer everybody’s questions in one go by writing the book. And I’ve enjoyed it.” So what are Branson’s key pieces of advice? “I always think that for something to be successful, it has to be an obvious labour of love for those involved. I am passionate about all my projects because if I’m not passionate about something, why should anyone else be? “But the idea must be a great one. If you have a great idea that will improve people’s lives, then you can’t go wrong. You have to have products that people can see will make their lives better.” But it isn’t just his inspirational ideas that have marked Branson out as a visionary, it is the quality of service too, and his message is simple – go the extra mile. “You will only be a success if you are offering your customer the best they can find,” he says with certainty. “It is absolutely vital. If it’s an airline, it has to be the best. If it’s a trainline, it has to be the best. If it’s the internet, it has to be the best. And if you’re offering the best, you will earn people’s trust.” Such an incredibly diverse business roadmap may seem unlikely nowadays for the next generation of entrepreneur to follow, but Branson says that business school and qualifications are not the be all and end all for aspiring businessmen. “I learned to survive by doing it, making

BD July 2012 page 9

9

mistakes as I went along, and that can happen today. Anybody can make themselves a success – you just need the idea. And perseverance. I have had my share of failures but I’ve never let any of them put me off trying something else. You can succeed even if you’ve failed.” So what of the future? As you might expect, Branson isn’t ready for the pipe and slippers just yet. “I want to carry on, definitely,” he says merrily. “I feel fit and healthy and there is no reason for me to stop. There is still so much to achieve. Who knows what tomorrow might bring?”

Sir Richard Branson’s new book, ‘Like A Virgin: Secrets They Won’t Tell you at Business School’, published by Virgin Books, is out now.

“There’s nothing more distressing after losing a parent than finding out that their savings did not need to be spent on their care home fees. The system has let many people down very badly indeed.” This is the view of Jonathan Anderson, an experienced Will and Trust Specialist and founder of www.Recovernursinghomefees.com. Jonathan is currently progressing dozens of compensation assessments in the south of England where the lack of standardised criteria used in assessing who pays Nursing Home fees has potentially left families tens of thousands of pounds worse off. “Unfortunately differences in assessment between different UK Health Authorities has created a postcode lottery in whether the Primary Care Trust (PCT) or individuals have had to pay for care” Jonathan explained. “The Government has acknowledged that this has been unfair and have set aside a billion pounds in compensation.“ Compensation claims are open to anyone who was/is paying for residential care from April 2004 but there are deadlines to register cases, the earliest of which is September 2012.

BD July 2012 page 18

“If you think that the fee assessment was not properly handled then it’s imperative to start the ball rolling now” Jonathan told us. “Our no win no fee policy means there is absolutely no barrier to anyone starting the process.” Once a case is accepted, a home visit prepares all the paperwork and all cases are submitted with an expert medical report produced by Senior Medical Practioners with experience of elderly care. “Compensation is not going to bring back a relative who has sadly passed away but helping to recover a financial legacy that was lost due to poor PCT practices is very important for the families left behind.”

Jonathan Anderson

Interview with Christine Cleakley

20

www.facebook.com/BournemouthDirectory

Workouts & Weddings TV presenter Christine Bleakley opens up about a big few months ahead. With rock hard abs and a red carpetworthy body that most of us would kill for, it’s no wonder that Christine Bleakley has been named Reebok Ambassador alongside the super fit Jack Osbourne. Thames-side, with London’s iconic Tower Bridge stood behind them, the pair went head to head at the launch of the much talked about fitness initiative, pulling out burpees and squats and working with dumbbells to push their bodies to the limit. Yet after an intense workout, Christine barely breaks into a sweat. “The first time I did Crossfit, I could only do 10 burpees (that’s ‘squat thrusts’ to you and I) I couldn’t breathe afterwards!” she says. “But now I’ll be able to do maybe 25 and that’s a massive difference. You can easily set goals to quickly increase your levels of fitness.” Essentially, the idea behind CrossFit is that a series of varied functional movements performed at high intensity helps to achieve overall physical fitness – so one minute you’re doing push-ups, the next you’re lunging into squats and doing stomach crunches. “It’s very much back to basics,” says Christine.

BD July 2012 page 20

Christine Bleakley “There are no big scary machines that you don’t know how to use and it never gets boring because you spend 20 seconds doing one thing before moving on to something else. If you don’t have time to go to the gym, you can do this in short, sharp bursts and you can get it done in half an hour. “That said, working out with others who also want to push themselves gives the sport a real sense of community. You’re competing with the other team, but more importantly you’re always competing with yourself.”

Friday, July 06, 2012 03:55 Black Magenta Yellow Cyan

Find us online at www.thebournemouthdirectory.co.uk Engaged to Chelsea footballer, Frank Lampard, Christine says living with a sportsman has its advantages. “We’re very supportive of each other and sometimes we work out together,” she says. “We enjoy our fitness and being relatively healthy, but we’re only healthy so that we can allow ourselves the odd treat. Nothing stops me pigging out!” Looking at Christine’s petite size 10 frame, you’d struggle to believe the TV personality was such a foodie. “Maintaining a healthy diet is everything for me,” she says. “I love food and I love cooking, because I enjoy it so much. And if I know I’m going out for dinner in the evening, I’ll do a workout that morning. It makes me feel less guilty about the pigging out bit! It all b alan ces its elf ou t as far as I’m concerned.” It’s refreshing to learn that Christine is neither diet- nor fitness-obsessed. Like most of us, she struggles to fit in a workout every day and aims for two good sessions a week. “We’re in an age where people are conscious of the way they look, but for me, more than anything, I like to exercise to clear my head,” she says. “I love emptying everything. I get very lethargic if I go a whole week without doing anything. Working out makes me feel good.” Desp ite h er imp ressi ve p h y siqu e, Christine admits there isn’t a part of her body she particularly loves. “I have bits that I potentially don’t mind on show as

BD July 2012 page 21

21

opposed to bits that I know I will always cover,” she says. “There’s never a part of my body I look at and think, ‘Yes, you’re looking good today.’” It’s reassuring to know that even the super fit have body hang-ups and, for Christine, it’s her bottom. “I need to get back into doing lots of squats over the summer,” she says. “I want to have a pert bottom by the end of August!” So has she always been so fit? An active career in the media, Christine argues, has kept her on the ball. “Before TV presenting I was a floor manager on dramas so I was constantly on the go. Lots of times I’d keep fit from running around at work, never mind doing anything else outside of it. I never considered an office job sat at a desk all day - it’s difficult when you do that because that means you need to work that little bit extra outside of work. I’ve always been very lucky in that respect.” General fitness ambitions aside, it’s no secret that Christine is in the midst of planning a wedding – so is she ready for an all-over bridal body blitz? “I’ll get the summer over with first,” she says. “I know when the big day looms, you start thinking you’ve got to fit into the dress. Panic hasn’t set in yet, undoubtedly it will, but I’m not thinking about it right now. When we get round to planning, I know Frank will be involved, so that makes the whole thing a little less daunting, I suppose!”

What to do in your Garden in July Now that we have reached July the garden should really be taking off. That also means, unfortunately that weeds will be doing the same and this is A Ladybird on a stem of grass something that must be kept must be kept on top of, and unless you use chemical pesticides in your garden the only way to keep them in check is good old fashioned weeding by hand. While you are at this task keep an eye out for pests, pick them off and dispose of them in the bin not the compost heap. Don’t mistake Ladybirds (for a pest as they are beneficial to the garden as they eat aphids. This wont work if you use chemical bug sprays. To encourage them plant some of the following: Angelica, Caraway, Cilantro, scented Geraniums, Tansies and Yarrow. Jobs to be done in the garden this month include the following: • Prune Spring flowering shrubs such as Weigela, Kolkwitzia and Wisteria, reduce their size by a third. You can also prune Apricot, Cherry and Plum trees at this time to help prevent Silver Leaf Disease. • Clip Box, Euonymus and Privet hedges. • Dead head perennials, summer bedding flowers and hanging baskets to keep them looking fresh and encourage further blooming. • Keep your eye out for Clematis wilt which shows in wilting leaves and black discolouration of the stems and leaves. If you spot this cut out and safely dispose of the infected part. • Continue to tie up the new shoots on Climbers to encourage them to go where you want them to, not where they might wander.

When you have done all this one additional thing you might consider, even if your garden is “fully stocked”, and that is have a wander around various Garden Centres. Keep a notebook and pen with you and note down any varieties that would make a good addition to your garden in the future. If you are wise you will choose a place that has a Café in it so that after a good go round you can nip in, sit down with a latte or a cup of tea and a sticky bun and contemplate all the changes you could make to improve your garden even more. “Oh the calories” do I hear you cry? But you’ve already weeded and walked Beautiful Cosmos those off.

Simple Sudoku Perfect for your coffee break! The one rule: Fill in all blank cells making sure that each row, each column and each 3 by 3 box contains the numbers 1 to 9.

Plant Folklore Throughout history, plants have appeared in folktales, acquiring sacred meanings and being associated with mystical powers; fairies and witches; divine spirits and demons. Fewer people nowadays are as superstitious as our ancestors, but old tales still circulate and plants still maintain symbolic value. Ragwort, a poisonous weed severely toxic to animals, is commonly linked to fairies in f o l k l o r e . Tr ad i t i o n a l l e ge n d s f ro m Scotland speak of how fairies can ride from one island to another using the stems. Fairies will also use the ragwort’s leaves to shelter from the rain on stormy nights. Even more magical is the Irish myth that horse spirits rise from the remains of ragwort which has been trodden on after sunset. Parsley has dark associations in folklore, perhaps on account of the Greeks, who used it as a funeral flower. In Hampshire, giving away the root of this herb is supposed to cause bad luck. Similarly, folk in Devon have said that moving parsley will offend the guardians of these plants; the transplanter will be punished within a year. In other regions, folk used to say that the roots of parsley reach down to hell and the devil; this was used to explain why crops refused to grow in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire in the 1800s. The yew is one of the world’s most ancient trees. Each tree can last thousands of years and drooping branches will take root in the ground and sprout new trunks. It consequently reappears in folklore as a symbol of death, rebirth and immortality: it was an important

symbol in Celtic culture and later in the Christian era, when it was planted in churchyards with the deceased. Hundreds of churchyards in England contain yew trees which are older than the building itself - it is estimated that some yews may be up to 4000 years old but others have been planted beside churches to maintain the old tradition. Pull the other one‌ Strawberries, which by now should be well in season, are unripened on the damp ground. Already many growers are getting covered in grey mould. The other famous Christian hymn "Hark the herald angels sing" was originally written "Hark, how all the author, John Byron, who lived in 1745, had a favourite daughter, Dolly. Before the war 35% of working women were single. Now its the other way round - 65% are married. A big change in women's lives. By examining a salmons scales under a microscope, the scientists can determine its age by counting rings on tree trunks. The other day I discovered a way to clean your oven if it has burned spots in it. Put ammonia and water in a bowl and sit in the oven.
