STRINGER PRESS SUMMER TERM 2021 Dear Parents, Carers, Staff, Students and Governors, Welcome to our summer term Stringer Press. This time last year I wrote about a very different summer term and this whole year has certainly been a challenge, however students and staff have adapted and managed to make sure Stringer continues to offer a rich and valuable education. These past two academic years will certainly go down in history, however in that time we have all developed new ways of working and no doubt the Oxford dictionary will add new words which were not in our vocabulary eighteen months ago. We are extremely grateful for your continued support over the last year, especially with the blended learning, the Teams lessons and the ever changing guidance. We now have the summer break to re-charge, and prepare for a new academic year and I look forward to seeing those in current Years 7-10 back in school in September. The end of an academic year is a time to celebrate the successes of Year 11 and all that has happened over the Year. Year 11 were absolutely fantastic with the dedication to their assessments and their sheer resilience over the last two years. They developed new ways of working and I have no doubt they will use these skills as they move onto college. It has been a pleasure seeing them mature over the final twelve months in school and I will miss seeing them congregate by D tree and we all hope they will keep in touch. They were very well supported by our pastoral team of Mr Holtom and Mrs Danahar and I know the students were grateful for all their care and attention over their formative years. Often I am able to talk about the national sporting successes and trips and productions which have occurred. This year we have been unable to participate in national competitions or trips abroad. Students have still managed to be involved with our wide extra-curricular programme and of course some of our events went virtual. We had the amazing virtual Open Houses showcasing the creative talents of our students, as well as the Dance Show streamed through YouTube. In addition there were productions from Year 11 in the school grounds and the music concerts which cheered us up. Two of our Year 11 students have excelled in sport with Emily representing Great Britain and Tom now full-time at Huddersfield. Thank you to all our dedicated staff who are here early, or late to support our students in unlocking their potential. As we reach the final week we have some staff who are moving onto new pastures and we thank them for supporting the students here and being part of the Stringer community. We wish them well and look forward to hearing about their next adventures. I hope you all have an enjoyable and restful summer holiday. I look forward to welcoming you back in September. Year 11 v Staff Football

Emily - Team GB Emily in Year 11 was selected for the Euro championships to represent Team GB in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Group Event. This is an amazing acheivment, well done Emily!

Tom - Huddersfield Town FC We have some fantastic sporting news. Tom Iorpenda in Year 11 has spent the last nine years playing football with Brighton and Hove Albion Academy. This term he signed a 2-year scholarship with Huddersfield Town Football Club. This is a huge achievement and testament to his hard work, dedication and resilience. Tom’s ambition is to play football professionally and it will offer him the opportunity of a full-time programme of football, education and a sporting excellence and performance course. We are all really pleased for Tom and we look forward to watching his progress over the coming years. 4

Idha - National Youth Track Final Idha in 9GTT is following in her brother Dylan’s footsteps and has been competing in regional and national circuit races. Idha is a member of Preston Park Youth Cycling Club and has also been competing in the regional qualifying rounds for the National Youth Track Omnium Final. The omnium is a multi discipline event covering the scratch, sprint, elimination and points races on fixed gear track cycles and raced on indoor and outdoor velodromes. It is the event in which Laura Kenny won Olympic gold for GB in both London 2012 and Rio 2016. Following strong performances in the regional rounds in London, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Brighton, Idha has qualified for the under 14 girls national final, which took place at the Lee Valley Velodrome in London on Sunday 17th July. Well done Idha what an amazing achievment, we look foward to hearing much more about her in the future.

Anya - Youth World Championships Congratulations to Anya Hmaimou in Year 9 who has been selected to take part in the Youth World Championships in lead, boulder and speed climbing. What an amazing achievement. Anya was one of only 3 GB team members in her age category to be selected for each discipline. The championships will be held in Russia at the end of August. We wish Anya the best of luck in the championships and look foward to hearing how she gets on.

Award Ceremony This year we held a virtual awards ceremony to celebrate the work, achievement and resilience of Dorothy Stringer students over the past year. We are delighted to share with the Stringer community the award ceremony speeches. In the video below you will hear from our Headteacher, Matt Hillier, our Head Students Ben and Ava and a special message from our guest speaker Rihanna Dhillon. Rihanna is a BBC Film & TV critic and an ex Stringer student. We were so excited to invite her back to school to record her speech. Parents and carers of our award winners have been emailed with a specific link to view the recording of their child receiving their award. Well done to all the students involved and thank you to all of our speakers. We look forward to being able to welcome parents/carers back into school next year for the 2022 Award Ceremony. Artists Open House Dorothy Stringer School Art Department joined the 2021 Fiveways Artists Group Trail online this year. Even though the school has been in lock down for various stages of their last year our GCSE Art, Graphics, Photography and Textiles students continued to create some amazing work. We are extremely proud of our students’ creativity and dedication in the face of such difficult times and are proud to show you what all our year groups have been doing both in school and at home. Dance Show Due to restrictions and time limitations, we were unable to offer our usual Dance spectacular at Brighton Dome. However, this year we have done our best to bring you some of the GCSE work that has been created by the students, year group class pieces, G&T group ‘On Pointe’ Dance Company, and some small year group dance club pieces. On Friday 25 June we premiered our first ever Virtual Dance show, we had over 1000 streams so thank you to those who tuned in, we hop you enjoyed it. A big well done to all the dancers involved. Blue Remembered Hills

This term, over 60 Year 11 Drama students performed extracts of Dennis Potter's 'Blue Remembered Hills' as their final assessed Drama piece.Their performances were creative and innovative and demonstrated a real understanding of character, narrative and style. Despite two extended periods of remote learning, they all responded to the limited preparation time with positivity and focus, engaging the audience with both comic and emotive performances. We had initially chosen this play because it is set in a wood, enabling the students to rehearse and perform outside without masks but, after 3 weeks of sun, the assessment days were a real challenge for site-specific performances with wind and heavy rain. Again, the Year 11's were resilient and carried on, staying for two evenings to complete the performances and support each other in these, their final performances at Stringer. We are proud of their accomplishments and their kindness in supporting one another. The Drama Department will miss them all and wish them luck at college next year.

Safer Schools App Earlier in the term we launched our new ‘Safer Schools App’ which is provided by our insurance provider Zurich Municipal. We would like to take this oppertunity to remind parents, carers, students and staff to make sure they have the app downloaded. The online world can be a bit overwhelming at times, but it is important we understand what our children are doing online so we can help make them safer. The Safer Schools App aims to help with this by providing you and your child with up to date advice and support around the online world. The App is designed to support and protect children by educating and empowering them at school and at home. Once students have downloaded the App they will get access to information that is relevant to them and you will receive tips and advice on how to keep them safer online. If you missed the launch you can find attached below instructions for downloading the App; the App is role specific to each group within our school community (Teachers, Parents/Carers and students) and to access relevant information to your role you’ll need to use the correct 4 digit access, this was emailed at the time of the launch. Virtual Work Experience On Friday 2 July, the vast majority of our Year 10 students participated in a Virtual Work Experience day. Following the recent lockdowns many companies were unable to offer week-long student placements; however, many national companies opened up their virtual doors and created virtual work experiences. The day started off with some introductory activities, an interactive video, a careers quiz and some research. Students then had the opportunity to sign up for some real work experience opportunities with some actual companies.Some of these opportunities were three hours long, others require a longer term commitment and lasts 30 hours! Our PSHE teachers are looking forward to hearing all about the opportunities our students have signed up for. Mrs Lloyd | Assistant Headteacher, Careers Lead

Dare to Dream A selection of Year 9 students were fortunate enough to have three visits from local radio DJ Jack ‘the lad’ during the summer term. These sessions were used to help promote key employability skills, such as resilience and confidence. The students really enjoyed the talks with Jack, who made the sessions informative but also funny and engaging. We were also paired up with local accountancy firm, Kreston Reeves, who gave the opportunity for a handful of students to have some 1-1 mentoring time talking about future aspirations and goals. As we move towards KS4, lots of focus turns to careers and future aspirations, so this was a fantastic programme to kickstart our LifeAfterStringer push.

sports week

Well what can we say… Sports Week has been a huge success! Over 1500 students have taken part in over 60 events and sporting activities throughout the week. From Athletics to Tchouckball our wonderful students and staff have fully embraced the week and been keen to participate in as many activities as possible. The range of activities has also meant that we have had some highly competitive competitions. The plan is to continue this festival of sport again next year culminating in the Withdean Athletics on the penultimate day of school. The results include events that have happened throughout the year. So all points from inter-house sports, sports week and sports day at Withdean have been accumulated to award the Addis Shield, in memory of Sue Addis a great friend and supporter of the PE department.

Fantastic Home Learning In Year 7 English students were given the task of researching a Shakespeare play of their choice, and producing a piece of Art inspired by it: a creative writing piece; a painting; a sculpture, or whatever they were inspired to create. Stringer Alumni: Where are they now? Finn Joughin - published in Sussex Bylines. Ex-student Finn Joughin (2020) who some of you may remember from plauong the pigeon loving Ronald in ‘The Wooden Frock’ wrote the article below which was published in Sussex Bylines. https://sussexbylines.co.uk/lockdown-in-manchester-how-not-to-run-a-university/ Finn said of the experience, ‘Indeed it is me. I never thought I’d be a published author but they were very keen on getting younger writers and it actually turned out to be pretty fun.’ Finn Joughin is currently studying for his A-levels at BHASVIC college in Brighton. Ex student Caitlin Rothery recently won The National Flash Fiction Youth Competition 2021. The annual National Flash Fiction Youth Competition, founded in 2013, is organized by the Department of English and the International Flash Fiction Association (IFFA). You can read Caitlin’s short story ‘Company’ on the opposite page. The prize was £100 of National Book Tokens and publication on this website and in the April issue of Flash: The International Short-Short Story Magazine. We are really proud of Caitlin who (with Rebecca Tilley) wrote our lower school play ‘Affliction’ in 2017, when she was in year 9! The two of them were part of the audition process and attended every rehearsal, co-directing with Ms Butler and working with the cast in the transference of their script from page to stage. Caitlin is currently studying at BHASVIC, It’s great to see her creative spark continuing to glow.

COMPANY - Caitlin Rothery When the guests had gone, they served themselves without pretension, with spoons sticking from metal pans on the hob, and carried a bowl each to the table where five places were set. Warm light from the overhead struck shadows on their brows, a stripe across their eyes when they bowed their heads. It made green the walls, a turquoise which seemed to grow in the gloam, go back and back for miles, giving the impression, thought Cathy, of their being at the bottom of the sea. The driving rain on the windows only added to this sense, its muffled din subduing the party whom it drenched in its sound. The conversation was reassuringly slack, the high energy dissipated, effortlessly tepid. The soup, which had been sitting too long, was lukewarm. Plastic beads at her sister’s neck clacked as she pulled them absently and, with her right hand, drew an apathetic spoon to her lips, opened them slightly, ate the soup. Cathy watched the window, black now, and her own reflection, face on, a defiant imitation, moving very little. The glass was imperfect; it distorted and betrayed its own mimicry. Now her forehead stretched up and up, illimited, now it compressed and the cheeks elongated, elastic features. The dark outside hollowed her eyes and struck a chiaroscuro effect, a picture of a yellow, skull-like form out of focus. When she changed her gaze, sought the night, the panes rippled, opaque and impenetrable. A fox’s yelp rang on the glass, the strange music of the agitated night troubling the walls, which sealed them in. The five of them, unified in their lack of pretence, were at once relieved and lost. The absence was absolute: in the empty chairs around the table, leggy and brittle; manifest in the dull passivity of Cathy’s father’s stare. The stray sock on the radiator seemed vividly red, he thought, eyes glazing. Alice, Jason, the four children, and Halle and Paul, all packed up and all gone and this red sock on the radiator, only small enough for little Alfie, all they had left with their absence. He thought, but for that, they were never here.

SMARTER UNIFORMS A reminder that Dorothy Stringer School has partnered with Smarter Uniform, Brighton & Hove's innovative school-uniform reuse project. Smarter Uniform collects uniform students have outgrown or no longer need when they move on from Stringer. The uniform is then sorted, washed and resold back to parents. Computing & Business News BAFTA Young Game Designers 2021 During Lockdown several students worked on their entries to this year’s BAFTA Young Game Designer competition. Students were tasked with creating either an original game idea or making an original game. Connor M-G created an amazing game for his entry into the Game Making Award, and Mylo and Callum developed storyboard concepts to enter the Game Concept Award.

Oxford University Computing Challenge This term we received the results of the Oxford University Computing Challenge. Congratulations to the following students who were all awarded a Merit in their respective age categories: JG and Sydney in Year 7; Stephane, Miles and Joe in Year 9. A special mention to Zac and Max, also in Year 9 who were both awarded a Distinction in the Intermediate category, which is a fantastic achievement.

10X Challenge 2021

Our GCSE Y10 Business students competed in this year’s UK wide 10X Challenge (previously known as the Tenner Challenge). The Challenge is run by Young Enterprise www.10Xchallenge.org.uk the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity, helping young people to develop the skills they need for life and work. Taking part in 10X Challenge helps our students to develop crucial employability skills and experience, as well as giving an important insight into how core curriculum learning will serve them well in this fast-changing world of work. Students were pledged £10 from the School 10X Challenge Fund and used this start-up capital to get their enterprise off the ground. Our students came up with a wide variety of products this year including ice lollies from Legendary Lollies, Seed Bombs from N&P, Gemstones from Jewel and Personalised Jewellery from NeoJewel. All enterprises competed during a five day trading period at the beginning of May, with all students gaining first-hand experience of what it is like to be an entrepreneur. Zine Project - Little Green Pig Dorothy Stringer School Library officially have a 'Zine Library' created by students from Year 7, 8 and 9 in collaboration with Little Green Pig https://www.littlegreenpig.org.uk/ Students attended workshops in the library, working with artists, Stringer students were encouraged to independently choose a theme, then create, publish and display their final zine. Chosen topics were wide ranging from fashion, space, musical theatre to mental health and sexism. The final Zines are all on display in the library. Drama Mock Exams

Since returning to school in March, Year 10 Drama students have been working collaboratively to create, rehearse and perform a non-naturalistic Devised performance piece exploring what it means to be a teenager in 2021. The performances we have managed to see have been creative, innovative, and engaging. The drama department are incredibly proud of the resilience and hard work shown by all of our Drama students. Art Mock Exams This term Year 10 Art, Textiles and Graphics students completed their Mock exams. Studnets completed some fantastic work. Art and Textile students have been experimenting with 3D materials to develop and create their final outcomes for the theme of 'Protection.' Over the two day period, students have used, wire, clay, papier mache and fabric to create a wide range of exciting outcomes. Graphics students have been using photography, stencilling and Photoshop skills to create eye catching packaging for a new fruit drink and album cover. In the Photography exam students have been using digital and handmade editing to manipulate and develop their portrait photography. Ms Mager & Ms French | Head of Art

Big Summer Read

It is time for Stringers BIG SUMMER READ 2021 This year’s books are inspirational reads and we want you to keep reading over the summer! Students have been given staff recommendations and encouraged to go along to the school library, borrow a book and gain achievement points! Why is reading important? Reading books for pleasure for just 10 minutes a day increases literacy skills, this is proven to help you gain higher results in all your lessons, reading can help you understand your own and others' identities and help improve levels of self-esteem. We look forward to hearing about some of the books students have been reading over the summer, and hope they enjoy the staff suggestions, we have included some of them below. Happy reading! Ms Morden | Librarian *Ms Grout* Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo. It’s an exceptional book that interweaves stories of womanhood, race, identity and modern British life. It’s a must read for all with its ambitious feminist narrative, full of relatable characters who are navigating their way through often difficult times in life. I related to many of the characters, and found their resilience and strong female narratives to be really inspiring. *Mr Imrie* Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada An incredible, inspired by real life story, of an ordinary German couple who start a resistance movement against the Nazi state during WWII. Whilst doomed to failure, it is a story of individuals fighting for some sort of justice, people believing in doing what is right with no hope of success and of love.

*Mr Laker* The Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson. The first book is called ‘The Final Empire’. It is a fantasy novel set in a world that lost to evil 1000 years ago and is ruled by a dark lord. A lot of themes about hope and never giving up. *Ms Lamal* Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah.The story is told through the eyes of a 14 year old boy abandoned in England by his father because his life would be better in UK than in his country of origin.

*Mr Charlesworth* Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. It is a wonderful, autobiographical graphic novel that describes what the author’s childhood was like growing up in Iran. It blew me away with how different and interesting her childhood had been in a completely different culture and place.

*Ms Moss* Touching the Void by Joe Simpson.A book about a mountaineering accident. It is described so vividly. I think it is such a clear description of how determined, strong ( mentally and physically) Joe Simpson was and I have always found this very powerful. Never give up! Also.. it was the book that made me never want to climb a mountain!

Staff Retirement Libby Danahar is having a well earned retirement with her husband Dan who left at Easter. Not only was Libby a caring and supportive Head of Year, she was also a first rate English teacher. We know we’ll see Libby back from time to time, however we hope they enjoy their time together exploring butterflies around the world.
