DOROTHY STRINGER MINIBUS FUNDRAISER

We need your help to provide our students at Dorothy Stringer School in Brighton, with the key to exciting opportunities and unforgettable experiences – a brand-new minibus. Our goal is to raise £33,000, and your support will make a tremendous difference.

At Dorothy Stringer School, we believe in enriching our students' lives beyond the classroom. This new minibus will be the gateway to a world of possibilities. It will allow us to take our students on expeditions to our outdoor activity centre, Dolawen, in Wales, transport them to sporting fixtures, and provide essential access to career and work experience opportunities. These experiences are not just about fun; they play a crucial role in our students' development and help us teach our core values of creativity, resilience and respect.

Outdoor expeditions: Outdoor activities teach teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving. They help build character and confidence while connecting students with nature.

Sports fixtures: Participation in sports fosters discipline, health, and teamwork. It instills the values of sportsmanship and fair play.

Career and work experience: Exposure to workplaces helps students explore career paths, develop skills, and build the foundation for future success.

Curriculum-enriching activities: Experiencing trips such as theatre, opera, gallery and museum visits helps students develop their creative skills.

The benefits a new minibus would bring to our school community

1. Nurture well-rounded individuals with a strong sense of community

Our minibuses allow us to strengthen our ties to the local community, getting our students out and about to local parks and natural sites such as the Seven Sisters Country Park

A recent four-year research study involving children in 125 schools in the south of England, found that 92% of pupils enjoyed their lessons more when outdoors, with 90% feeling happier and healthier as a result.

An additional minibus will enable us to increase these opportunities to promote positive mental health and raise well-rounded students with a deeper appreciation for our local environment

Our minibuses have also enabled us to run our own charity collections including our 2022 Foodbank appeal which saw an enormous amount of donations from our whole school community. Our minibuses allowed us to transport our donations and our students got first-hand experience of the community support that takes place in our city

2. Equip students with essential life skills and experiences

Having access to our own minibuses allows us to offer our Enrichment Week activities to all of our 900+ Key Stage 3 students, getting them out of the classroom and encouraging them to try something new

It also allows us to offer every single Year 7 student the opportunity to visit our activity centre, Dolawen. For many students this is their first time away from home and is an opportunity to try a number of exciting activities Along the way, they make new friends and develop practical and social skills that will help them to thrive throughout their time with us and far beyond

If you’d like to see more about Dolawen, take a look at our video here.

3. Broaden students’ horizons and open doors to future career opportunities

Our minibuses also support our Careers and Post-16 programme, allowing students to experience a taste of life after Stringer and take part in events at University of Sussex, the University of Oxford and local colleges

We also run a week-long work experience programme which sees every single Year 10 student spend a week with a local employer. In many cases this has led to our students being offered jobs and has strengthened our relationship with local businesses, while also giving our students a greater awareness of the opportunities available to them when they leave school

4. Foster a culture of curiosity, exploration, and ambition

At Dorothy Stringer, we’re proud to provide inclusive extra-curricular activities, particularly in our PE department Our PE and Dance extra-curricular clubs are attended by around 700 students week in, week out

A new minibus would allow more of these students to compete locally and nationally, fostering a culture of sporting participation and inspiring our city’s future sporting stars.
