REPORT

Dear DTCA ‘Ohana,

“Shaping Lives to Shape the Future” is our school theme and prayer for our keiki, our community, and our world. Each day our teachers are lovingly shaping these little lives and praying for the Lord to shape their hearts. In other words, we are discipling and teaching so that the youth will one day lead with integrity, love others well, hold fast to a Biblical worldview, be a light in this dark world, bring others to the Lord, have great marriages, be loving mommies and daddies, and transform our culture.

“But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our potter; we are all the work of Your hand.” Isaiah 64:8

Our “Shaper” is working in His school and you are about to read through some of the testimonies of what He doing. Bringing glory from grief, transforming minds and lives, bringing historical truth in the islands, taking care of families, igniting growth to reach more youth, and drawing more to saving love and trust in His Son.

Last year was devastating when the wildfires burned. The island will never be the same. Please continue to pray for the families who are still struggling with the losses, the trauma, the hardships and living situations, and ultimately that they will put their hope in Jesus Christ. As a symbol of support and soliderity, you will notice the color pink on every page as well as the lokelani flower on several pages. They are the official color and flower for the island of Maui.

Mahalo for YOUR part in shaping lives for Jesus who will one day shape the future!

SHAPED FOR

Ijust want to start off by saying I never grew up Christian, I had a couple of my friends who did, but I never got any of it.

The fire changed my whole life and directed me somewhere so different, I was scared for that change because I did not know what would happen. My whole life was on the west side. The same day the fire started, me and my friends were in Lahaina, it was the windiest I’ve ever seen it get. There were things flying off buildings, little wind tornadoes, and most of the power was out. So it was pretty chaotic before the fire even started. That morning before my dad left for work he told us “this is to be cautious but pack your bags just in case anything were to happen.” Me thinking it was silly to think there would even be a fire or a chance of it getting to our house, said “ok” but never packed a single thing neither did any of my sisters. That morning would have been my first day of Lahainaluna but it was canceled because of high winds. My mom and little sister were at the house and me and my older sister Juliana got picked up by our friend and went to Kapalua. All of my family were separated and could not contact each other because there was no internet. I think it was 2 hours that went by when we found out there was a fire just near where I lived. Still, I was thinking they would get it out, not worried at all.

I never heard the news till a little while later when I finally was able to contact my mom, but while she was telling me, I still thought that the fire would get out before it reached our house. My mom was frequently checking to make sure the fire wasn’t near, but one of the times she went outside the fire was right there. My mom ran into our house and grabbed my sister and hurried to the car, not taking a single thing because there was no time to. She drove to her friend’s house 10 min away, not thinking the fire would get there, but it did. She then drove all the way up north to where me and my sister were. Until we actually saw her I had no idea if she was ok or if she escaped because there was no way of contact so I was worried for her. At the time, when my mom arrived me, my sister, and our friend were at a lookout that faced Lahaina to see if we saw any smoke. We met this girl who was in Lahaina during the fire and had footage of it. Before we saw this footage I still had hope that our house was still up. Seeing this footage is when I realized how big the fire was, I hadn’t realized it reached the town.

When we walked back from the lookout we finally saw our mom and sister. That night my family stayed at our friend’s house. It was very chaotic In Napili because the Civic Center evacuated to Maui Prep. I’ve never actually felt fear until this night. When I saw Lahaina from Napili at night, our window was facing the Lahaina side, I couldn’t find any way more perfect than describing it as if the sun came down on Lahaina, the whole sky was glowing red, and it was scary because i was thinking the worst possible things like what if the fire came all the way to where we were or what if we had to run for our lives. I never fell asleep that night because I was too scared. After this night it was just our family trying to figure everything out.

At my friend Sarah’s house, we evacuated because of another fire in Kaanapali (went to the beach to relax, and saw a fire rushed to the house). I felt that fear all over again, and I have PTSD whenever it comes to fires so this just made it worse. I did not have any friends at the time because the people who I thought were my friends really showed me what their priorities were, and when I needed them the most they just left. After everything happened, I felt really lost and sad all the time. During all this my thought process was it’s ok to feel sad because of what happened but don’t feel too sad because people lost way more than me. So I guess I was trying to convince myself I was ok, but I wasn’t.

The next few months were just living in hotels and trying to figure out what is gonna happen next. This is just how I viewed it, but the west side was so separated from everything. One thing that was really cool to see was our community helping each other. I’m not too sure how long it was when we figured out we got a house in Paia and got into the school but I honestly was not excited about going here. I did not realize this because I did not have a relationship with God but he had a plan for me. Even though the events that led to it were sad it was worth what I have now and who I have. Fast forward to when I started school here and ended up liking it more than I thought I would. After a few months I realized what having a relationship with God was, and to add a whole new story, a very important part of my journey that made me realize everything was when Maila took me to go to a service, and I worshiped for the first time and it felt so good. And before everything happened I didn’t even know you could have one. I then realized that I wanted a relationship with God. I was encouraged because of a lot of you guys, and I saw Hi’i’s love for God and was like wow I want that. So I decided to work and grow in my faith. And I met a bunch of new people like Mahina who I’m very grateful for and every other person I met.

Our high school has officially joined the Maui Interscholastic League for the first time in the history of the school. This means we can compete in high school sports. What an exciting milestone for the school!

FIRST MCA SPORTS TEAM - SURFING

How fitting that surfing was our first sport since we are located on the North Shore! World champion windsufer, and alumni parent, Dana Anderson, coached our students with the help of Nate Barnes and Caleb Maisonville. Our boy’s & girl’s teams were amazing, and so were our parents who were there at every tourney to cheer them on!

SHAPING MINDS

The DTCA Bible Memory Program has students memorizing a verse each week as well as remembering the learned verses at the end of each month to be sure the students are retaining what they have learned. At the end of the school year, students say all the year’s verses and receive certificates. It is incredible to listen to these kids say their yearly verses! If they can say all of their verses through 8th grade, they receive a massive trophy! Just this last year we received four different notes from alumni and current students about how God’s Word has shaped their minds and hearts.

Thank you for getting us to memorize scripture that is still in my heart/mind today.

“I still have those memory verses from Doris Todd engrained on my heart!”

ANDY DEMICHELLE 2012 DTCA Graduate 2020 Graduate from Moody Bible Institute

One day after school, as I was driving my hanai granddaughters, Lily and Maliē, to their Mom’s work we were reviewing Bible verses. Lily was so delighted to realize that she could remember each one. She said, “See, Nana, I AM hiding God’s Word in my heart!” What a blessing!

“From time to time I reflect on my life. I ask myself what was THE most important thing was that I learned in all of my formal education experiences including college… hands down, no contest, it was the verse memorization at Doris Todd. When I was a student I didn’t understand the need. It was just another hoop to jump through. As an adult, I treasure it. It’s a major way the Lord speaks to me and had I not hidden those words in my heart I would have missed so much of that relationship with Him and His leading. It’s extra special that Dr. Todd listened to my 8th grade yearly verses, and now Mrs. Todd for my daughter.”

SHAPING HEARTS

I am not just teaching subject matter; I am shaping lives. This understanding compels me to teach with intention, knowing that the ultimate goal is not simply to pass on information but to foster a deeper, more holistic understanding of the world through the lens of faith.

What we want is their hearts. When teachers give instructions, admonitions, warnings, corrections, exhortations, and discipline they must all flow from our desire to gain their hearts. When the teachers at our school set the rules, they are after their hearts. When they instruct them in God’s ways they are after their hearts. Ultimately, we want our students to give their hearts to Jesus. Giving their hearts to their parents and teachers is practice for this ultimate giving. Observing and imitating what is being modeled are stepping stones to observing and imitating God’s ways.

SHAPING Culture

It has been a privilege to have Ka’eo DeCoite come and teach at our 3rd5th Christian Hawaiian History week, and in our middle school Hawaiian History class. All ages are captivated and in awe of how Jesus is interwoven in the roots of the islands!

In 1840, Queen Kaahumanu mandated that everyone in the Kingdom of Hawai’i learn to read the Bible. As a result, there was well over 90% literacy in the Kingdom of Hawaii, and well over 90% of Hawaiians became Christians. Hawai’i was the most literate nation and most Christian nation in the world.

The queens valued education and wanted their people to know Jesus. During Hawaiian History class the students went through and corrected the textbook with Ka’eo. Our keiki are getting to hear the true history of Hawai’i. A new generation rising up to shape the culture with Jesus!

Great is my love for the word of God, by which I hope my mind has been enlightened. The word of God is a true word, a good word. Jehovah is a good God I love him, and I love Jesus Christ. I have no desire for the former gods of Hawai’i. They are all false. But I love Jesus Christ. I have given myself to be His.

QUEEN KEOPUOLANI

During Hawaiian Christian History week, Ka’eo brought the original handwritten hymn, “Wake Isles of the South.” It was sung on the wharf, in New Haven CT at the embarkation of the missionaries for the Sandwich Islands (Hawai’i), in 1819. Our beloved missionary, Mrs. Todd played the hymn for our students!

RAISING SPIRITUAL CHAMPIONS

NURTURING YOUR CHILD’S HEART, MIND AND SOUL - Dr. George Barna (Exerpt)

“The bottom line, then, is that if you want your life to make an impact, you must be committed to being a disciple who makes disciples. And the research clearly indicates that the most effective approach to disciple-making is to focus on discipling children. To effectively disciple a child entails developing their worldview to be consistent with the Lord’s teachings. Raising children to be spiritual champions - that is, followers of Jesus Christ-is the only real hope for any nation, family, or individual.”

THE HEART OF OUR MISSION - OUR STUDENTS!

DTCA began in 1956 and high school classes were offered from 1976-1988. In 2014 our high school was born again! Our motivation has been driven by the love, care, and concern for the youth on this island. We want to provide a thriving high school experience for our students so they can continue the quality education they have been receiving, and grow in their faith all the way to becoming adults and leaders in the community. To do this, our first step is to provide amazing classrooms for grades 9-12!

We have also seen the great need to provide a gymnasium on our campus not only for our students and familes, but also for the community. Currently, gyms on island are limited, and students from preschool through high school lack access to a safe, indoor athletic facility for physical education, indoor recess, and extracurricular activities, including sports.

SHAPING ‘OHANAS

Tobi Brooke Hartman and Patrick Charles Fisher first crossed paths in 1976 as third graders at Doris Todd Memorial Christian Day School. Nestled in the scenic town of Paia, on the north shore of Maui, the school became the backdrop for their childhood friendship. They were even “boyfriend/girlfriend” for a short time in 4th grade! Patrick gave Tobi a special Cat’s eye shell necklace that she still has to this day.

Though life took them on different paths in junior high, high school and college they would cross paths from time to time, their shared history and memories keeping them connected. In 1991 nearly two decades after that first meeting, Tobi and Patrick returned back to Maui after college and reconnected while paddling outrigger canoe. They started dating and got married in 1994 and welcomed twins Chaz & Emalia in 1995. The twins would attend Haiku Baptist Preschool, carrying on the family Doris Todd legacy.

As the years passed, the Fisher family grew with the birth of Zach in 2005. Zach would attend Doris Todd K8th grades. Rooted in the love that had begun so many years ago on a small school campus. Through every challenge and triumph, Tobi and Patrick remained the steadfast pillars of their family, their story a testament to friendship, love, and the beauty of growing together. Doris Todd was and always will be an influential and spiritual foundation for their Ohana. The Doris Todd faculty has always supported and uplifted them through every milestone of their lives.

SHAPING LEGACY

TOBITA / RHULAND / ARTATES

Ed and Doris Todd along with Eddie and Barbie arrived on Maui in 1954. They had come to share the Gospel with everyone they met. One Sunday, Ed was asked to preach at Wailuku Baptist Church (now Valley Isle Fellowship). Mrs. Haruko Tobita was in attendance and said she never forgot that sermon. A friendship was begun that grew stronger over the years.

Phil and Nancy Winkler came to Maui in 1993 as Pacific Area Mission’s, Field Director, during a transitional time for our mission. He stepped into the position of pastor of Paipala Church, one of the churches Dr. Todd had started. Phil served on the board of Doris Todd Christian Academy for 28 years. He was a faithful member and contributed in developing a strong statement of faith and board policies, and was a part of both the Financial Aid & Housing Committees.

Mrs. Tobita was a determined, fiesty woman, who worked in the pineapple fields. After attending the church service, she dedicated herself to getting her driver’s license just to bring her family to Pauwela Church (now Haiku Bible Church) all the way from Lahaina ,every Sunday! Later, she served in the church and cooked for the Todd’s summer camp.

For almost 30 years the Winklers served Maui with genuine hearts for God’s people, and prayerful hearts for the people of the world who need Jesus. Pastor Phil and sweet Nancy were dear, kind, and loving. Their marriage was an example to all of us: the way she held him in the highest respect and admiration, the way he protected and loved her, how they served side by side. They were willing to do anything to serve and help so that people would come to saving trust in Jesus. They faced incredible difficulties and darkness in Pa’ia, but they were incredibly faithful. The Winklers were always praying and encouraging others to pray. Nancy often made food for fellowship after church, quilted banners for the auditorium, they held Bible studies, and discipled many.

Lily Tobita, the oldest of the family, was working in Honolulu and attending high school. Her parents wanted her to come back to Maui, so they asked Ed and Doris if Lily could live with them in Haiku and attend Maui High School in Hamakuapoko. While living there, she became close friends with Mabel Sharples (Todd) who arrived on Maui as a missionary during her senior year.

Before Pastor Phil prayed, he would often say, “Let’s go to the throne of grace.” We know they are now at the throne of grace itself, interceding on our behalf.

Lily graduated from Maui High and the Todds took her to Cedarville College. From there, she transfered to Mabel’s alma mater, Miller College of the Bible, but then returned in 1965 when Doris went to heaven unexpectedly. She was a wonderful blessing as she assisted in the Paia Baptist Nursery School and churches. Lily was the Preschool Director for many years and also served as a Board Member.

Later, John Ruhland, from Detroit was stationed on Oahu in the US Coast Guard. He enjoyed coming to Maui to fellowship with the Todds and their friends. John fell in love with Lily, and they were married in 1980. They had a baby girl, Patricia, in 1982. John managed the Todd’s Christian Bookstore for years, and served as an elder in Paipala Church.

Patty attended DTCA where she had teachers who were like family because she had grown up with them. She then met Alaka’i Artates at King Kekaulike High School when she was a freshman. They became high school sweethearts and married in May of 2008.

In 2010, Lily went to be with the Lord. John had a big heart for people and a love for this ministry so he began donating to help provide a student scholarship in her memory. Patty & Alaka’i had their own little Lily, and then Maliē. These two little ones began their part of this long-time family legacy of being a part of DTCA in 2020.

It has been four generations stretching from 1954-2024! A legacy shaped by Jesus through His ministries!

CLASS REUNION 2024

Lord, please bless and keep all of our alumni close to your heart!

This class reunion was extra special. They were our COVID class of 2020 and didn’t get to experience their in-person graduation ceremony. So of course they needed to graduate from 8th grade before they graduated from high school! We held a small graduation ceremony with our strap-on kindergarten caps, 8th grade diplomas and on the spot speeches to hear what their plans were after high school. We prayed together, they left advice for the 8th graders and as always the adults leave and the students stay to hangout long after we’ve gone. We love re-connecting with our kids, and seeing them re-connect with each other.
