Annual Impact 2021-2022

Dear DTCA Families, Friends, and Alumni,
You were a part of giving $211,009.02 to the Lord’s school on Maui! We are including the amount down to the cents because we want you to see even then smallest gifts that our own keiki gave to support their school. We are astounded, and again, humbled by your love and stewardship of what our God has given you, to bless His children on this island.
It is our prayer that this year’s Annual Impact Report is an offering of thankfulness and praise to our Provider for our largest annual funds raised to date! There are several quotes from the book, Every Moment Holy, to bring further reflection and worship.
You may know that mahalo means thank you in Hawaiian. If you break down the word: MA - in this case means within, HA - refers to the breath of life or Divine breath of life, and ALO - means in the presence of. The full meaning is Thankful to be in the presence of the Divine breath of life. As Christians we know the Divine Breath is the Holy Spirit and we live on His borrowed breath. You will see terms of thankfulness in Hawaiian throughout these pages as we seek to honor Jesus with every breath and appreciate the culture we are very blessed to be a part of.
Mahalo Ke Akua - Thanks be to God! And Mahalo Nui Loa - Thank you so very much - for your heartfelt support!
Carolyn Moore Mabel Todd HEAD OF SCHOOL SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENTMahalo to each of you and your entire staff! It has been a very long two years during this pandemic, but the school remained open to teach of God and educate our keiki. God’s work is certainly being done there, and it shows in the DTCA staff I have encountered and students.
Mahalo for your kindness, care and love! You are angels on earth! Your steadfast belief in God and the daily prayers you have spoken have made such a difference in my children and myself. There are no words to express how much I have appreciated you in my moments when I have felt so alone in my mothering my 2 children. I thank God for you everyday while I pick up my children in your school parking lot.
Mahalo Nui Loa for your daily prayers for our Ohana during our family’s toughest moments this year.
With Sincerest Gratitude and Aloha, Kate Merriweather
I’m so thankful & grateful for your long history & presence...serving families & children of Maui. Many of my nieces & nephews have been students & myself over the years. Words of praise are: that parents & children are so loved & welcomed, treasured & encouraged in special ways which has meant impact, change, growth & salvation in so many lives. It’s the gospel of Christ made alive!
Thankfulness / To thank, bless, render thanks, congratulate, make acceptable, praise, improve, perfect, correct; grateful, gratified, thankful.
“
Mahalo Nui for giving so that these smiling, silly, happy faces can learn about Jesus every day! They are memo rizing Bible verses, which is transforming their hearts and minds, and laying a foundation for the rest of their lives...and eternity to come. The Lord is using your gifts to spread His Word, change lives, and bring children to saving faith in Jesus.
256Bible verses are memorized each year in over 150 homes.
When I give to meet the needs of others...when I give to the service of your Body & your Kingdom, I give not what is mine, but only what is already yours. - Every Moment Holy
The Tarasenkos are alumni parents of twins who graduated from our 8th grade in 2020. Even though they are not here at the school any longer, they have big hearts for what God is doing at DTCA and in the lives of the students.
Pam is a long time friend of Mrs. Todds. She doesn’t live on Maui, but has chosen to give what the Lord has given her by giving to the children at this school.
Pam $20,000 is Mrs. She live to to this
Pam has been such a faithful, generous sup porter of DTCA for many years. We greatly value her and her heart for the Lord.
Altman ‘Ohana / $20,000
The Altmans have been our largest givers over the past two decades, when their children first started at DTCA. They continue to give and are involved as an entire family.
The Tezaks are parents to two of our alumni. Their old est, Mackenze, is a missionary teacher in Spain. Their youngest, Zoe, just graduated from NYU last May. We are so thankful they continue to invest in Christ-cen tered education for Maui.
Susan is an alumni mother to Micah Hoover and Megan Franks. Her grandchildren have also been at tending DTCA. We are gratful she faithfully gives on a regular basis to the mission of the school.
The Dvoraks have been a part of our school ‘ohana since 2012 when their oldest started in our preschool. They not only love and give from their hearts, but they are highly invested in the future of our school.

Let me give to that which moves your heart
DTCA parent, Henry Tavares, donated his time, his workers, his incredible slides, cotton candy, shave ice, and a lot of hard work to give our kids a day they will never forget. Mahalo!

Elena Dias -$200
Elena is an alumna of DTCA. In the 1993-94 school year she and her friends, Kehau (Cerizo) Deutsch and Patty (Ruh land) Artates learned to play basketball. They continued to play at DTCA until they graduated, and they all attended King Kekaulike where they played on the JV and then varsity teams. When donating Elena told us that “Doris Todd is the reason she played basketball”. She wants to give toward our new gymnasium for many other keiki to have the same opportunity!

Testimony from the 1980’sWhile I was working at a nursing home a friend of mine gave me a mission’s pamphlet that she had received in the mail, and suggested I look it over. It had a listing of several small mission organizations and the needs each had. I prayed a lot ahout it, looked at the possibilities and inquired of about five. I went down the list, saw Hawaii and thought “that would be a great place to go”. But, like I said I inquired with about five, and the Lord closed the door to every one but Ha waii. This was in Oct. 1977 and by the following March I had applied, been accepted, and was here by the following August. My desire for missions was really growing, and it was just so exciting to see the Lord work out so many details. My home church had a Commissioning service for me, and that was the most special day in my life. It was so special to feel their sup port (to this day I’m so blessed), and I feel a great responsibility in representing them here. At first my parents were just happy that I was happy and satisfied in what I was doing, but like I said, the Lord is working. They have come to visit and seen what I’m involved in and they are super-supportive of my work here. Maybe I did get into missions in a round-about way, but it was the Lord taking over and leading that has really caused me to grow in the ten years that I’ve been here. It is so exciting to see our school children come to Christ as well as adults who have been struggling for so long. Sure, He has given me responsibili ties and opportunities here that I wouldn’t have had if I was still back home, and He has taught me so much personally, caused me to stretch and grow, to hurt a whole lot at times. But, how He has used those times to draw me so much closer to Him. I’m more in love with my Lord now than ever before, and I just pray His love will just splash from my life on to those I come in contact with. I will be going home on furlough later this year, and I just pray my parents will just see a real change in me, that Christ is just the most important person to me. I want them to see that. I do have a brother and sister-in-law living close to home who are also believers so that is a real encouragement. I am eager to see friends and family for a time, but I know I will be ready to get back to the task which God has given me, in my service for Him here.
She Does It All With Love - 1988 Yearbook Dedication
A student cuts his finger, another has a fall, no need for us to panic, we know just who to call. She’ll treat the laceration and fix the aching limb. She does it all with love, because she knows she’s serving Him. A class needs transportation, someone must drive the van. There is no cause for worry, because we know who can. She gets the mail, sometimes the snack, and does it all with skill. She does it all with love, because she knows it is His will. She’ll keep the books or teach a class, and does it all with care. No matter what the task may be, Miss Carlson’s always there. We dedicate this book to her, because she means so much. She does it all with love, because she knows the Master’s touch.
$100 / Davin & Tammi-Lyn Hashimoto , $100 / Howard & Alana Hashimoto
Tavin loved his Papa’s farm in Kula. He planned to run it one day. His uncle, Arthur Criste, said, This kid was just amazing and so knowledgeable...He knew where everything was on the farm. He would pick all the berries, he knew all the different fruit trees that we would always stop at. He just had an awesome heart.”
In April, we built a garden for our 2nd grade class and dedicated it to Tavin’s memory. It was such a sweet thyme to remember him with his family, teachers and classmates. / But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever! Amen. 1 Peter 3:18
$20,000 / Gary Urbach
Betty is the mother of our 1st grade teacher, Cindy Urbach. She was a fun, singing, danc ing, theatre directing, teaching, loving, wife and mother. The Urbach farm was sold in 2021 after farming for over 65 years.
HouGrant us, therefore, courage to love well even in time of absence...Therefore we praise you even for our sadness, knowing that the sorrows we steward in this life will in time be redeemed. - Every Moment Holy
$250 / Cross-Country Coach & Father
Hunter loved his kids, Jasmine & Nalu, and he loved coaching cross country at DTCA. Back in 2013 he took it on himself to volunteer and paint our lower buildings. Our faculty, staff, and students continue to miss his smiling, upbeat presence at the school.
$500 / John Kotlar
Valerie taught at DTCA from 1977-1981
She made those awkward middle school years feel normal and fun. She was a great teacher and friend, had a nurturing and car ing sprit, and most of all, loved Jesus with all her heart.
Cindy Hanscam / Alumna
$33,500 / Given for student scholarships over the years.
John was the husband of Lily, one of our original missionary teachers & board members. Their daughter, Patty, is alumna and her two daughters attend DTCA currently. He loved to sing, joke, and eat ice cream. You would often hear him say, “To God be the glory!” John supported our ministry with his whole heart and referred to us as his family. He prayed for us, served with us, loved us, and gave for the keiki to have a Christian education.
Once upon a time at a little school, on an island in the Pacific ocean...John Franks (6th) met Megan Hoover (3rd). They started dating in high school and were together at Baldwin for a year before he graduated high school. John attended UH Manoa on Oahu his first year, then on Maui until Megan graduated high school and they both went to Biola together. They dated 7 years, and got married in January 2007. Ethan arrived a year later and Lexie the year after that…
John & Megan’s oldest son, Ethan, graduated 8th grade from DTCA last May (22). Lexi is currently in 7th grade. John & Me gan are a dynamic design duo and are working on our new website. John also set up our Wi-Fi network and continues to maintain all things I.T. for our school.
