Woodpeckers are fascinating creatures known for their relentless pecking on trees. While their actions may seem destructive, they serve a purpose in nature. Similarly, in our lives, we often encounter situations that feel like relentless pecks, leaving wounds that seem irreversible. However, just as trees transform woodpecker wounds into beautiful scars, so too can our lives be transformed into testimonies of God’s faithfulness and grace.
Like the woodpecker, life’s challenges can leave us feeling wounded and vulnerable. We may experience loss, rejection, or failure, causing deep emotional pain. In these moments, it’s easy to question God’s plan or feel abandoned by Him.
Yet, just as the tree’s bark gradually heals, God can mend our brokenness. Through His love and power, He can turn our scars into symbols of strength and resilience. Our struggles become part of a greater story—one of redemption, restoration, and hope.
The journey from wounds to scars is not always easy. It requires patience, faith, and surrender to God’s will and not our will. We must allow Him to work in and through us, trusting that He will turn our pain into beauty.
In Romans 8:28, we’re reminded that “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This promise assures us that our suffering is never in vain. God can use every trial to shape us into the person He created us to be.
As we embrace our scars, we can find beauty in the brokenness. They remind us of God’s faithfulness in our darkest moments and serve as a testament to His power to heal and transform. Our scars become symbols of victory, proof that God can turn our woodpecker wounds into something beautiful.
Let us embrace our scars with gratitude, knowing that they are a reminder of God’s love and mercy. May they serve as a beacon of hope to others, showing that through Christ, all things are possible—even turning wounds into beautiful scars.
Jason Schlabach - Director/FounderWe are delighted to have Dorcas Layman join our staff here at DOH! Dorcas was born and raised in southeastern Virginia, in a family of eight children. She graduated from high school in Virginia and then moved with her family to Minnesota in 1976, where she finished a college degree in teaching at Bemidji State University in 1979. After teaching school for three years in Hanover, Pennsylvania, she began 36 years of ministry with Northern Youth Programs in Dryden, Ontario. She enjoyed serving as an administrative assistant for Clair and Clara Schnupp, NYP’s founders, for 27 years. She traveled with them, assisting in workshops in Alaska and northern Canada. As Clair and Clara’s ministry shifted from teaching family life seminars to dealing with heart issues, Dorcas became more aware of areas of her heart that needed healing. As God brought healing through a caring counselor and friends, she opened her heart to listening to other people’s stories.
She completed a Master’s degree in Counseling from Providence Theological Seminary in 2001. Later that year, Clair, Clara, and Dorcas, along with others, began 12 years of ministry in Greenland. Dorcas sat with many women during those years, listening to their stories of pain, abuse, neglect, abandonment, loss, and shame. Last fall, Dorcas heard that Ephrata DOH was praying for a lady counselor to join their team. As she talked with Ray and the Board, she sensed God’s affirmation that counselling at DOH is the next part of her pilgrimage. She has experienced God’s healing in her life and is committed to walking with other women on their journey.
We are so excited to have started a monthly zoom connection with HH alumni!
This is a platform to continue follow up and discipleship.
We all have read the account of God speaking to Moses from the burning bush. Sometimes I envy those encounters Moses had with God. How awesome to see His glory! Recently, the Lord has been showing me that when we say "yes" to Him, He will transform our challenges into "holy ground". In our weakness He becomes strong. Any place where we surrender in obedience He shows up.
So many heroes in the scripture said "yes" to God even when they were facing fear, defeat or death. They didn't know the outcome of their courage! They gave God their "yes" and He showed up with the rest. Moses, Abraham, David, Daniel, and Esther all gave God their "yes" and experienced that "holy ground" where God shows up and turns things around!
At Hannah House, we have experienced God showing up. Even when all we have to bring is a few loaves and fish. God multiples. Lives are changed. Praise Him!
