Lessons for Driving Sustainable Growth Baarah Poultry Farm AdduMeedhoo Cooperative Society

Baarah Poultry Farm Location: Baarah, Haa Alif Atoll Technical Partners: The Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture and UNDP Local Partners: Baarah Cooperative Society (BCS) with Local Community support

Initially established in 2009 to support integrated farming in vulnerable communities in the Maldives, the project partnered UNDP and the Ministry with Baarah Rehendhi Movement (BRM); a local NGO. Largely due to networking sessions at the P4D Forum 2010 BRM formed a business relationship with The Beach House at Iruveli – a one year contract to provide a regular supply of fresh eggs to the resort. Additionally, through contacts established within the forum, BRM was also able to sell chicken meat to J Resort Alidhoo. In 2011 Baarah Cooperative Society (BCS) was established, with the support of UNDP and the Ministry’s Projects Implementation Unit (PIU), with a view to strengthen poultry as a business while also increasing sustainability. Following this

transition BCS have managed this project for a full cycle; having managed to fund the second production cycle through revenue generated from the first. In an effort to address a shortage in supply, due to a three months gap in egg laying cycles, UNDP is currently funding a rearing house in addition to the existing laying house - construction is currently ongoing and expected to be completed by the end of the year. This will ensure a constant supply of eggs throughout the year. Additionally, under the Fisheries and Agriculture Diversification Program (FADiP), the Ministry has agreed to fund the expansion of the project - adding two laying houses to the facility.

Although the initial connections were facilitated by the Ministry and UNDP, BCS has now found a new client in Seagull through efforts of their own. BCS, since their production capacity does not yet allow them to supply to more than two clients, chose not to renew the first contract and to move ahead with Seagull Group Pvt. Ltd. The eggs supplied by BCS have met Seagull’s quality requirements and the company is pleased to do business with the cooperative even if it means supplementing the company’s quantity requirements by buying from other sources until BCS can expand further.

Key Benchmarks: — Produces premium quality eggs – fresh and straight out from the farm — Larger size and weight of eggs –eggs produced weight more compared to imported white egg — Pricing remains highly competitive – considering the quality of eggs — Environmentally friendly production

AdduMeedhoo Cooperative Society Location: Meedhoo, Seenu Atoll Technical Partners: The Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture and International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) Local Partners: Addu Meedhoo Cooperative Society (AMCS)

Formed out of the necessity to market the produce of Meedhoo farmers, AMCS was the Maldives’ first Marketing and Distribution Cooperative. In its initial setup the Ministry’s Project Implementation Unit (PIU) provided technical assistance to AMCS – this was funded through IFAD’s Post-Tsunami Agriculture and Fisheries Rehabilitation Programme. AMCS has developed a good relationship with all the farmers on the island – the majority of what is produced in the island, including melons from the autopot project, is bought by the cooperative and supplied to Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort and Spa. With PIU’s support, AMCS has been able to build a strong working relationship with Shangri-la Resort, supplying on a

consistent basis – this was formalised into a contractual agreement which was recently renewed for another three years. AMCS and Shangri-la have now reached a point where there is a relationship of mutual trust built between two partners. It should be highlighted that significant efforts were made by Shangri-la in fostering and guiding the cooperative; allowing time for them to grow as a business. Shangrila has supported the natural evolution of AMCS – adjusting to their growth and supply capacity. Working as partners, AMCS and Shangri-la developed an eco/agro tour in Meedhoo – AMCS arranges a tour for guests, including visits to the farms, as a cultural event accompanied by refreshments. This is in turn being supported by the Cheynu NGO.

Key Benchmarks: — Acts as an agent between the farmers and potential buyers — Identifies the needs of the market and guides farmers accordingly – per the demands and needs of the buyers — Trains farmers in modern methodologies and good agricultural practices to increase the quantity and improve the quality of their produce — Provides technical, as well as financial, incentives to farmers — Works with stakeholders, like the City Council, to assist farmers in overcoming the issue – such as farming land ownership — Currently over 320 shareholders – with around 990 shares — Supplies over six types of fruits and 19 different types of herbs and vegetables
