Sports Day Reception Drop-In Session End of Summer Half Term 1 Nurseries: Bring a Special Person

June Dear Parents, It has been another action packed week at Dolphin School Trust, with plenty to celebrate! Our year 6 pupils have worked incredibly hard to ready their orders in time for sports day - tie-dye t-shirts, popcorn and the all important Classy Café which has been open every day before school. The keyrings are in production and will be ready very soon.

A small group from Year 6 also found time to spend with the nursery children at West Side on Wednesday, thoroughly enjoying meeting new friends. All the children are really rising to the experience: forging new relationships with their older or younger peers.

Our main highlight was the Dolphin School sports day, held at Wimbledon Stadium. It was a roaring success - literally when it comes to the house war cries! I was really proud to see the Dolphin pupils compete against each other with such focus, ambition and importantly, humility. After several years of experiencing no sports days, it was fantastic to hear that children who were previously in pushchairs were now running the 100 meters!

Thank you to all who supported the event and helped to ensure it ran smoothly.

Parent Prayers All parents are warmly invited to join Parents' Prayers on Friday at 08:55 - 09:25. Please arrive in Reception to be signed in and meet Miss Clark who will accompany you to the music room.

Drop-in Session: Reception Class There will be a drop-in session for Reception tomorrow, Friday 27 May, from 8.30 - 8.45

Parent Choir The Parents' Choir is back! During the fundraising concert, the Choir will be performing a selection of pieces. It is lots of fun, with wine on hand to lubricate the vocal chords. Come and join us! Rehearsals are on Tuesdays at 19.00, resuming after half term for 3 weeks.

Early Bird Club & After School Care Dolphin School Early Bird Club is in place for parents who need to be early at work and need an earlier drop-off at school. The complimentary facility starts at 08.00 each morning and parents should continue to register interest/update cancellations with Mrs Saunders in the school office. If you are late for the start of the club, please could you wait until the doors open at 08.30 to drop off your child/ren.

If you have one child in an after school club and another in after school care, please could you collect them separately instead of them both at 17.00. We appreciate that the times do not coincide, and are reviewing this in time for the Autumn Term. The after school care staff plan their activities in advance and therefore need to have the correct numbers.

After School Care Pupils making use of the After School Care programme have had a busy week. They have been planting sunflower seeds in the school garden, watering plants, building towers and baking in the kitchen! Scones were made to celebrate the Jubilee - jam or cream first? Our after school care is fantastic - homework is always done first, before settling down to guided and purposeful activities which support and compliment the school curriculum at all ages.

Reception As it was a bit too wet in the garden (even for our hardy kids), we decided to design our own. We discussed what we would expect to see in a garden and then decided it should be beautiful, have a quiet area to sit and a place to have fun.

Different sections in the garden included a zip line, a fountain, a trampoline, a flowerbed, a chessboard, a hammock and a treehouse amongst others.

There were some fantastic ideas and great discussions about what makes a good garden!

Year 2 Sapphires Year 2 Sapphires were visited by Jan - a volunteer from the RNLI. Our theme in Relationship Time at the moment is 'being safe', and we have already discussed how to call the emergency services. Jan's workshop included action packed videos, flags and dressing up! She helped to inform us how to be safe around water and reminded us never to jump in the River Thames after your dog! Remember if you need the RNLI, telephone 999 and ask for the coast guard.

Year 3 Rubies On Thursday, the Year 3 Rubies brought their rainforest topic to life (quite literally!) with a group of very unusual visitors - creatures of all different shapes and sizes, some of which we were able to touch, and others that we preferred not to! Among our interesting guests was a dangerous scorpion who glowed blue under an ultraviolet light, and a giant snail with more than 10,000 teeth! We were able to stroke a cockroach (though this did not appeal to everyone) and heard that they have the amazing ability to come back to life after being frozen and can survive without their head for up to a week!

The sense of anticipation went up a notch when a huge, hairy tarantula was brought out of its box, and we watched with bated breath as it crawled over its handler’s hands. We were able to have a closer look but, to the relief of almost all in the room, we did not have to pick it up ourselves! After an encounter with a very relaxed gecko, we met a beautiful snake and, as we gently stroked his scaly skin, we were astonished by how smooth and cool it felt under our fingers.

Our workshop also focussed on the environmental and atmospheric changes our planet has experienced over the past 150 years, along with a sobering prediction of what might happen by the year 2100 should humanity continue to destroy rainforests and increase carbon emissions and other pollutants. It filled us with even more passion to play our part in preservation of our beautiful world. It was a thrilling afternoon where our heads were stuffed to bursting with fascinating facts about the exciting critters of the rainforest and gave us a fresh reminder of how there is no time waste in making changes so that we can continue to enjoy God’s extraordinary creation, preserving the delicate balance of nature for future generations.

Year 4 Emeralds

What does one do when you have only six boys in the class? One takes them tottering out in the elements, laden with water bottles, notebooks and blazers to explore change in their locality, in real time.

After making some interesting speculations about the structures on the roof, the eager Emeralds got closer to research the past, present and hopeful future for the Arding and Hobbs building. What a fantastic excursion it turned out to be, Ms Rogers was impressed by the impeccable Dolphin behaviour and the inventiveness displayed to hold onto water bottles!

We also had a very special guest pop in to share her passion for researching local history. Mrs Adekanmbi grew up in Battersea and kindly shared some of its historical secrets with us, as well as some super tips for clever research - what a wealth of knowledge. And to our surprise, she relayed stories from her youthful past of shopping in the Arding and Hobbs department store!
