GLETA HQ is a mass timber office building, that aspires to create a sense of community through the neighboring local buildings and Riverwalk. It provides visibility to the Detroit Riverfront and connects users from the townhouses, Outdoor Adventure Center, and the harbor as a way of embracing the spirit of the Detroit Riverfront and evoking memories and emotions associated with it. GLETA also creates a sense of place for the building tenants; by providing user comfort, personal choice, and flexibility of program – by adapting to an open floor space. Through the utilization of renewable energy and a sustainable mechanical system, GLETA becomes a friend to the surrounding neighborhood of Rivertown - GLETA becomes a hub for energy production as it aims to be a below net-zero building.

We were to design a museum on Capitol Park, Detroit, for this project. We were given programs and square footage size for each program needed to include on our art museum. While designing, we also thought about the climate, building codes, and materiality. I designed an idea called the “Lost in the Art” concept. This concept was intended to keep the user’s primary focus on the art and the experience of losing track of time because of it- this idea’s primary focus was to make user’s feel immerse. The idea included having rooms inside rooms to circulate in. I was inspired by Tadao Ando’s manipulation of light for atmospheric effect, which also made me design my lighting in which could affect my user’s experience.

For this project I was designing a complex of five townhouses on the sloping site in the Polish Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The housing project had to respond to the context of the site thoughtfully while reconfiguring it to it’s steep topography. The complex units also had to respond to the climate data and solar conditions in building orientation, and relate to the existing buildings designs.

For this semester, I was in the Cine-Studio. Cine-Studio emphasizes on the study of films and how film can challenge our perceptions of architecture, space, time, narrative, and culture. Film is architectural on many levels, the structure, organization, tempo, sense of time, materials, the ways we characters move through space, and the ways spaces reinforce the design and scene. Architecture can inspire and inform how narratives and imagery further engage the viewer.

We read theoretical and cultural articles on film and architecture to begin to think critically & design our developments accordingly. We were to explore film ideas and mediums in a series of Interpretive Pieces, working up to a ‘installation’, which we were encouraged to work on in groups for this installation and our final project. Our projects were very flexible as we could work with either virtual or physical iterations or a combination of both. The final project is a building and site design, culminating the semester’s investigations.

“The architecture and urban landscapes of Inception don’t obey the rules of gravity and tangible reality; they are submitted to another set of norms, subjective and fluid, that concern the world of dreams and unconsciousness.”

The intention for this project is to create dream like reality architecture. To create this playful architecture, I played with the use of color, and form, as well as how the law of gravity, and camera usage. This model with playful gravity orientation could only be accomplish through rendering softwares.

For this installation we created a secluded, disorienting environment/experience by designing a hybrid installation combining both virtual and physical media. We plan to expand on a previous ideas we had used and utilize the following film techniques: close-up shots, pacing, camera rotation, and mise-en-scène in the projected videos. Our inspired film had strategies like focusing on urban details at night and we did this too.

The Architecture of Image:

Existential Space in Cinema; Introduction and from the film Inception

“The architecture of the mind is a space where one’s experiences, thoughts, imagination, dreams, and memories dwell as a result, creating profound experiences and connections with the individual.”

Our intention for this final project was to create a space that is immersive, experiential, and sensorial.Expanding on our Filmic Installation Project to create a secluded, disorienting environment and sensorial experience by designing a hybrid installation combining both virtual and physical media like our installation. Our film precedent again, was Blade Runner, and the incorporating idea of ‘architecture of the mind’ derived from Juhani Pallasmaa’s. We inteded to bring out the night scenery life of Blade Runner, and match
