is a humanist typeface born in the need for type family that bridge seamlessly, between coding and web interfaces. With its warmth, ubiquitous and flexibility, Cerium sees that everyone: designers & non-designers, developers & non-developers could easily integrate beautiful typography into every part of their life.

Why Cerium?

Monospaced typefaces for coding environment are widely available, even freely as open-sourced fonts online and many of them are well built. However, a lot of them were designed solely for coding environment. Although there also superfamily of typefaces that also includes both proportional and fixed-width style, a lot of them are usually designed by large type foundries and quite expensive thus less widely available. These circumstances inspired the creation of Cerium, typeface family that bridge between coding environment and web interfaces that is more easily accessible, ubiquitous, and flexible. Cerium is inspired with the ubiquity of many default fonts, such as Microsoft’s Consolas & Corbel and the technical shape of IBM’s Plex Sans.

Cerium adopts the openness of humanist sans-serif typefaces to aid legibility in small sizes and to reduce ambiguity in letterforms. Cerium letterforms are inspired by squircle shape and position itself in between coding typefaces (that are usually horizontal and vertical stroke optimized) and curved text typeface (that usually have rounded letterforms like geometric and neo grotesque sans-serif). Squircle allows the letterforms to look rounded and friendly while also keeping the verticality and horizontality of the stems.

Initial Development

The first main obstacle for the development of Cerium is the fact that high quality open-sourced monospaced typefaces are easily acquired online and thus the demand for a brand-new typeface for coding environment is quite low. So, I compared many different popular coding typefaces like Consolas, Input Mono, Fira Sans, & Operator and try to find a gap in between those selections. At this point is when the idea of squircle shape appear.

Openness of the characters are visualized with open aperture. Although the final letterform does not differ a lot from the initial sketch, few trials and errors has been done to optimize the letterforms on how it appears on screen as it was intended; for example, the character s’s early and end beak, was modified to be flatter than the original drawing. Some research on the topic of legibility were read and reviewed to optimize the letterform for legibility onscreen. The letter g is initially designed with open loop, but finally closed because it creates visual distraction compared to other characters from the set. Harmonization between every style was considered in the development, like how much compression may affect the stem width of the characters and the distance between each style in an axis.

Harmonizing Type Family

Regarding the harmonization between styles in weight axis, Cerium must have distinct distance between weights to accommodate different text hierarchy level: from thread-like thin, to bold. I look at similar typeface and make the distance between regular and bold a little further.

During the early stage of testing between weight axis, I found out that Cerium Bold looks smaller than Cerium Regular with the same x-height. Then, I optically raised the x-height for the bolder style slightly, and vice versa with the lighter styles.

Cerium’s proportional and fixed-width version were developed together to ensure their clear connection. Cerium’s proportional version gain distinctive features from differentiation inspired by its monospaced counterpart. The monospaced version on the other hand learns how to not to let its constrained proportional stretch or squeeze the letterforms too much. Cerium’s width axis (Compressed to Regular) was created to help the user for more-space efficient circumstances like texts in mobile displays. I started by designing the extreme compression I want while keeping some level of legibility in small size. Then, I reduced the stem weight in comparison with the regular version.

The idea of differentiation also used to inspire the design the italic version. Cerium’s Italic was designed to be look more flowing and handwritten compared to the upright counterpart; that is why the design of the italic characters was designed with alternative shapes while keeping some design element from upright version. Despite that, I saw that its not enough to differentiate it with the upright; I experimented with different slope angle to find balance between differentiation and harmony. Finally, 12° was the chosen slope angle.

Harmonizing Script

When harmonizing Cerium's Greek and Latin script, I started by finding characters that share the same letterforms. While doing so, I also look at some resources about designing Greek type from my professor Gerry Leonidas and a few similar typefaces that support Greek characters like Bliss Pro, Consolas, Corbel, Input Mono, and Source Sans. I understood that Greek characters are more handwritten form and I use that to frame the design of Cerium's Greek type. But, because there is also an italic version, I balanced the handwritten forms between the roman and incorporate them more to the italic version. Greek characters generally have more strokes compared to Latin, and when I experimented with bold master, the Greek look darker, especially on the monospaced version. So, I compared the Latin and Greek side by side and balance the stroke weight of the characters slightly until they look optically similar. For designing the Cyrillic type, I also use the similar method on finding shared characters and look at similar typeface as reference. I also see a few resources regarding Cyrillic type from Victor Gaultney, and then compare them to the Latin counterpart.
