By Philip Mohr, executive director Des Plaines History Center
TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO, POTAWATOMI PEOPLE INHABITED THE DES PLAINES RIVER VALLEY. THEY WERE REMOVED BY TREATY IN 1834, SHORTLY AFTER THE BLACK HAWK WAR. THIS REGION THEN WAS THE “AMERICAN FRONTIER.” FARMERS FROM NEW ENGLAND STRUCK OUT AND LAID CLAIM TO PATCHES OF FEDERAL LAND FOR THEMSELVES.

After federal surveyors mapped Maine Township in 1841, more farmers as well as land speculators. The prairie provided fertile farming soil, the timberland provided wood to build structures, and the river provided water and transportation.
When the railroad crossed the Des Plaines River in 1854, our town was born in earnest. Roads, businesses, and neighborhoods expanded out from that point. In fact, downtown Des Plaines is still oriented according to the railroad tracks rather than compass directions.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, waves of transplants from back east and immigrants from Germany grew the population. Des Plaines incorporated as a town in 1869 and reincorporated as a village in 1872 and a city in 1925, adding the Fire Department in 1892 and the Police Department in 1899. The Des Plaines Women’s Club partnered with the village government to receive a Carnegie grant to start the Des Plaines Public Library in 1907. The citizens decided by referendum to establish the Des Plaines Park District in 1919.
Over the twentieth century, we saw the transition from farming hub to industrial suburb with the addition of more railroads, the growth of Orchard Airfield into O’Hare International Airport, and the development of the Interstate system. Since World War II, the farms gave way to suburban neighborhoods and modern commerce. Des Plaines has become a large community, diverse in its population, commerce, industry, and public services.

Leaning Tower of Niles is, naturally, a replica of Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is roughly half-sized, 94 feet vs. the authentic’s 177 feet, and leans about 7’4” off plum (vs. Pisa’s 13 foot tilt). America’s Leaning Tower was built in 1934 (600 years after the original) by businessman Bob Ilg, who anchored it in concrete so that its lean would stay consistent. A plaque at its base says it was built to honor the outstanding scientist Galileo Galilei, who dropped various objects from the top of the Pisa tower to prove his theory of gravity. The plaza around the tower was renovated in the late 1990s, adding a fountain and reflecting pool. Niles’ sister city? Pisa, of course.
