FAIRWAYS THROUGH TIME: THE HISTORY OF A LOCAL GOLF COURSE
Mel Graham, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, took the first steps toward this dream by purchasing land adjacent to his father's modest farm. Over time, he amassed more than 1,000 acres, laying the foundation for what would become a premier destination for golf enthusiasts and their families.
In 2001, Graham's vision materialized with the creation of The Club at Longview. He sought to craft the region's finest golf course and entrusted this monumental task to none other than Jack Nicklaus. The course is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, a distinction that signifies the legendary golfer’s hands-on involvement in every aspect of its design. Two years of meticulous planning and development culminated in the grand opening of the golf course on October 20, 2003, marking a new chapter in Charlotte's golfing history.

The club's involvement in charity work exemplifies its commitment to the community. Longview has hosted several fundraisers for Turning Point, the only organization in Union County providing emergency and lifesaving resources for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. This support underscores the club's dedication to making a positive impact beyond its gates.
The Club at Longview stands as a testament to Mel Graham's vision, offering its members a blend of luxury, community, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Whether enjoying a quiet dinner while the kids are at the Youth Lodge or participating in a charity event, members are part of a legacy that values both leisure and giving back.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR A MILITARY
HEROES
WALL OF HONOR IN WAXHAW

PATRIOTISM IN WAXHAW
Waxhaw remembers and honors those who have served our nation in the military and public services.
Each year, locals and visitors gather at the Military Wall of Honor to take part in Memorial Day, Patriot Day, Veterans Day and Wreaths Across America ceremonies that tribute local heroes and show appreciation for sacrifices made by so few, for so many. Our Local Waxhaw-Weddington Rotary Club plays a big part in keeping the honor and service of those that are currently serving or those that have passed. We appreciate you!
We keep a strong partnership between the Town of Waxhaw, The American Legion and local business leaders. All are welcome to attend and learn about unique military customs such as the POW/MIA Table, and gain perspective from historical facts. We like to pass on a legacy of patriotism to our children. As a community, we honor those who gave some and some that gave all.

AND WAYS TO CONNECT

Ready for a history lesson? Don’t worry, there will not be a quiz. Indian Land, South Carolina, is close to the North Carolina border. It lies east of Fort Mill, and just south of Ballantyne in southern Charlotte, and west of the villages of Marvin and Waxhaw in North Carolina. It has a rich history. You might have already guessed that the name was derived from the fact it was inhabited predominately by Native Americans of the Catawba and Waxhaw tribes. The Catawba and other Siouan people were friendly towards the European settlers as they moved into the area between the Rum Creek and Twelve Mile Creek in the 1750s. The majority of the new settlers were ScotsIrish migrating from Pennsylvania, as well as other Scots-Irish from the backcountry of North Carolina and Virginia.
Early settlers migrated to South Carolina from Lancaster, Lancashire, naming their county for the House of Lancaster. The struggles between the House of Lancaster and the House of York in 1455-85 was known as the War of the Roses. The House of Lancaster chose the red rose as their emblem while their neighbor, York
County, boasts the white rose. (Remember this by red symbolizing love which starts with an L, the same as Lancaster.)
The second South Carolina colony, located on Hanging Rock Creek (check it out, and you will know how it got this name) in lower Lancaster County, settled in 1752. Soon after, other settlers came along the Lynches Creek, Little Lynches Creek, Flat Creek, Beaver Creek, and lower Camp Creek. They followed old Indian paths that widened and eventually became roads.
During the American Revolutionary War, Colonel Abraham Buford and his forces fled from Tarleton along the Rocky River Road. He was overtaken a few miles south of the North Carolina state line, where the Patriot forces were defeated in the Battle of Waxhaws or rather Buford’s Massacre.

THE AREA HAS MANY LANDMARKS OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE. MAKE IT A FAMILY EVENT TO VISIT THESE THIS MONTH.
• Buford’s Massacre Site, the site of Colonel Buford’s 1780 defeat by the British after the fall of Charles Town, with memorials to those who died in the Revolutionary War. Battle of Buford Monument is on the National Landmark Register.
• Kilburnie, the oldest standing Lancaster residence. Built in the 1820s, the house has been moved to Craig Farm Road and is now a bed and breakfast inn. (This would be a fun staycation.)
• Old Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, the first brick church in the region. Built in 1862, it features Gothic revival architecture and is currently the home of the Lancaster County Society for Historical Preservation and is on the National Landmark Register.
• Lancaster County Courthouse was designed by Robert Mills in 1825-1828.
• The Old Lancaster County Jail, used from 1823-1979 as the county jail, is also a national landmark. It was designed by Robert Mills.
