Pantone Color Institute is the worldwide leader in color forecasting and consulting, and each year they name an annual hue that is reflective of world trends in design, art, fashion, film, travel destinations, and other media influences. For the first time, the Pantone Color Institute has created a totally new color for their catalog, Color of the Year: PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri.

According to Pantone, Very Peri “helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives.” We’ve been emerging from an intense period of isolation into a more hybridized world. This dynamic new color represents overlapping worlds, approachable with the steadiness of blue yet accentuated by an exciting violet-red undertone. In a world with both a growing virtual space (i.e. the metaverse) and more emphasis on the Earth beneath our feet, this new color capitalizes on possibilities and expansion into new ideas and territories.

A clear trend going into 2022 is how we’re embracing a more hybrid world with a new perception of “normal.”

We’re rethinking how we communicate, how we work, and how we socialize after times of intense isolation and uncertainty. With new ways to reach each other and work together in hybrid environments, advances in technology are playing an integral role in keeping contact.

NEW PE The online experience remains strong for both social and business needs. Recently, TikTok became king, dethroning Google as the most visited website and showing the increasing power of social media and content creation. And the growing importance of virtual space is exemplified in the popular concept of a totally connected VR and AR-assisted 3D environment called the metaverse; as tech’s hottest buzzword of 2022 (so far), you’ve probably heard of it. This cultural shift towards online socialization in a true metaverse has increased consumer desire for VR headsets and accessories that improve connectivity and user experience. Of course, with so much of life and business being conducted online, cyber security is a growing concern. And as a necessary antidote to more online time, the idea of unplugging for “intentional intermissions” and more “analog” moments are the key to balance.

Many have returned to offices, while workplaces aim to keep people feeling protected in their shared environments. But many employers have also embraced the hybrid model. Y2K

A trend fitting for uncertain times—Y2K is back!

With underlying anxiety about the Millennium, the early aughts were a time of new invention and expression; it’s no surprise that the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic has created a similar culture in 2022. Characterized by an explosion of bright colors, the early internet and tech revolution, pop-punk attitudes, and denim-on-denim ensembles, the Y2K era was pretty extra… but it’s the next stop on the nostalgia tour we’ve been on over the last few years. As a huge trend in pop culture, food and beverage, and fashion, nostalgia is escapism at its finest. Evolving out of the ‘70s roller skating boom, ‘80s-inspired pop music, and ‘90s fashion fever that we’ve seen the past few years, the Y2K throwback was bound to happen eventually.

Inspired by pop culture events like TV reboots and reunions of shows like Sex and the City or Friends, this deep dive into the past is offering us some nostalgic comfort. It feels familiar, and that’s why it’s working.

On the catwalk and on the streets, designers and influencers are going full throttle with a passion for early aughts fashion: denim and velour, fur and puffer jackets, butterflies and tinted sunglasses, Ed Hardy and trucker hats, polos and tracksuits, belts and bucket hats. Checkerboard print everything brings back that surf-skate-punk-ska “cool factor” that Vans has capitalized on for years. And a new micro-trend of ditching auto-pair wireless earbuds for “retro” wired headphones is a love letter of sorts, as more people show that they’re “committed to the wire” and other tech “relics” of the past. Some of our favorite brands of the ‘00s are showing why they’re still our favorites, twenty years later.
